Will Muschamp has been named coach-in-waiting (the new gig in college football) at University of Texas. I'd say that jump from Auburn to Texas worked out well for him.
Perfect deal for him. He can learn how to manage stuff beyond defense while learning under Mack Brown.
How long does mack have left? 5 years?

This scenario allows him to handle many aspects of the head coach's job without the pressures of the head coach's job. That's exactly what he needs.

He left because he didn't get along with Bockrath. The situation certainly wasn't ideal.
I still don't think he will be any less green 2 or 3 years from now. What, will his official title become "Head Coach Intern" instead of defensive coordinator now that he knows he is getting the job?
ReplyDeleteI am of the opinion that nothing he experiences during the next couple of years will more prepare him to be "the guy." He will have to learn as he goes, just like all first time head coaches. He would have done that in his first year at Tennessee or Texas or wherever he would end up. And like other head coaches, he might be successful. Could be wildly successful like Petrino or Stoops or other coordinator to head coaching hires. He could be a disaster. I think he will be pretty good, but definitely didn't think he was a sure enough thing to get rid of Tubs like some people think.

ReplyDeleteI think, depending on the terms of the agreement, it's more like a dog marking his territory. If you're OK with being...marked...it's a good deal. Time will tell how these kinds of "we're-not-ready-for-him-but-you-can't-have-him" deals work out.

FWIW, I expect Tubs to be back next year with a new OC, OL coach, and a new WR coach. I don't see Auburn's options out there.
I've kind of changed my tune on Tubs' recent attitude. I mean, what is his character supposed to be? He's totally under a microscope. He's snake bitten and nothing he can say will ease anybody's pain.
That brings me to another sub topic. Who really cares what a coach says after a win or a loss? What does it matter? What's on the field matters. Saban delivers that message all the time and his crimson cronies can't read it. They worship him. He won't stay there.
Jay G - I was reading some of Tubs comments in other places and I have started wondering. Have you ever felt like Tubs doesn't like Fannin for some reason?
ReplyDeletet's hard to imagine there being much of a down side if you're the one offered one of those deals. You're promosied a plum job in the future and in the meantime you get a substantial raise and ease your way into the new gig. If, for some reason, the head job doesn't open up quickly enough for you, there's always the possibility of another school buying you out of that deal and making you their hc.

Douglass linebacker Jonathan Atchison, who committed to Auburn, has scheduled an official visit to archrival Alabama.
he will make a a recruiting trip to No. 1 Alabama on Jan. 17. His visit to Auburn is scheduled for Jan. 10. Atchinson is also hearing from Florida, which has shown strong interest but has not offered.
Atchison narrowly committed to Auburn over Alabama, which made the Crimson Tide intensify their efforts to lure him. Atchison said he remains committed to Auburn, but is simply “hearing out other schools.”

This year he had a banged up shoulder and they didn't want him reinjuring it, and last year he had a bit of a fumbling problem. With a compotent OC him and tate are going to be pretty good next year. I know your feelings on tate, but he has run pretty hard the last three games.
And atleast we got McKenzie back at tight end where he belongs. Hopefully he will be there all next year.

ReplyDeleteIt has taken Leach a number of years to "build" TT into a team that can score against the big boyz. Many SEC fans that post on the blogs won't wait that long. Give him the right DC and 5-7 years and he may build a winner.

OK, here's what I don't understand. Tubs is the CEO of his company-AU football. By his admission(he fired both of them) he has made mistakes hiring OC's. Now he is saying I know what it takes to fix the problem I need to replace the OC AND hire new assistants to replace the ones I have kept around for 10 years so they can draw retirement for the state, but now I will cut them loose for the good of the program. And TPTB are saying patience is needed. Am I misreading this situation, or does this sound like a reasonable argument against letting CTT pass the buck again on assistants being the issue?

ReplyDeleteBorges was not a mistake hire. He was not retained due to a lack of continued development and stagnation. I think that as he had chlidren, maybe Borges lost some of the ambition requisite for continued success - such as all the legwork and extra effort that is necessary for effective recruiting. That is not Tubs' fault. To Tubs credit, he made a difficult decision to change last year, when it would have been much easier to maintain status quo.
ReplyDeleteIn ten years, he has brought in two coordinators that did not work out and could be considered bad hires (D Gibbs and Franklin), and both were quickly rectified.
Franklin could have been a good hire, but there was a personality conflict that proved fatal. I think Tubs has learned that lesson, which will be evident when the new coordinator has input regarding retention of current offensive assistants. The BBQ is about to become a pot-luck.
Jay all this CWM talk got me curious about Texas and their facilities so I go check out their website. I noticed where they give free tours to the general public (not on game days), I was wondering does Auburn offer anything like the tours Texas offers. By the way easy to see why they get the recruits they do.

Went to the AU-Texas game in Austin in 91(?) as a guest. The Texas folks, who expected to win were great hosts, even when AU won.

Sounds like a good deal for Muschamp. I kinda thought he might start as a head coach at a bit lower tier school. This is a pretty big gamble for Texas, or a desperate attempt to keep him as DC. Either way, he gets rich.

28 turnovers, goodness sakes. I happened to watch this one. NC applied pressure, but not alot. It was not a bad beatdown, but North Carolina may have paid a price though injury wise. No love lost here for Roy Williams or NC.

Jay, I was thinking about the ethernet shut down at the pressbox Saturday. Do you think it was the AU facility guy doing his version of turning on the sprinkler?

Well, I have finally heard John Longshore and he pretty much makes me want to stick a fork in my eye.
ReplyDeleteMonica-I quite listening to him in January also along with Finebaum. Now I just catch about 30 miuntes of the lunch bunch show. Not sure of the goofs on it, but I think one is J Moon.

ReplyDeleteI mention them becaue you mentioned Rick Burgess's son a couple of days ago. and they are funny a lot of the times.
I think they shut down the ethernet Saturday because it was the last home game of the year. To an IT guy who knows nothing about how sporting events work, it makes sense to shut things down after the game.

dnatl, a few thoughts after reading your comments on CTT and coordinators. The "Nallsminger" has to be one of the all-time disasters of OC even though neither was technically "the guy." Petrino was a good hire, but left after one season for HC job(no blame to Tubs for that one). But while Petrino was here, he had one of the most talented offensive teams in AU history. His offense here, while much improved from Mazonne(sp?)was nowhere near the level he has shown consistently at numerous other jobs. Add that in with Franklin's comments about the hiring process and the way he was treated by CTT and staff and I just don't see the faith in CTT making a good OC and assistant coach hire. If he stays I will hope for the best and be proud if it does work, but I think the record is iffy of that happening.
