Fallout from Tuscaloosa

Hey everyone. Here are some things I heard after the game:

  • Tuberville said he's expecting to return next season: "I'm committed to getting this thing going again. In this conference and in college football, you're going to have up and down years. I have total confidence that I can get this thing turned around. It was my fault that we got it this way in terms of our offense. We just never very consistent on offense but I'm committed to getting it done. We'll start immediately in recruiting and working in that direction."

  • Here is Tuberville two-pronged plan to fix the Tigers' ills:

    • a. Offensive strategy: "We've got to figure out where we want to be, what we want to do, who's going to do it. I've got a lot of guys in mind, lot of interest.

    • b. Recruiting: "We've got to recruit some guys that can make big plays. We don't have that. We've got to get a few more offensive linemen, we've got to get back to being more physical; we weren't a very physical football team this year and after taking us out of being physical in spring practice and the first three or four games, it's hard to recover that during the season. So, we've got to get a playmaker."

  • On assessing his assistants: "We'll go out and recruit, starting the recruiting this week. I think official visits and contacts start tomorrow. Guys can go into homes and I'm not going to make any quick decisions; there's no reason to, we're not playing in a bowl game. I'll sit down and evaluate. I've got to go out and do recruiting and also get on the road and start interviewing people" (for the OC job).

  • Jason Bosley is not happy with the speculation rolling around: "I think it’s ridiculous, absolutely. For what Coach Tuberville has accomplished since he’s been here -- to go through a season like we’ve had this year with the adversity -- for there to be any discussion about his job security, I think is absolutely ridiculous. It’s absurd. If you’re going to do that to a man who’s done what he’s done for Auburn University, that’s ridiculous. That’s stupid. I don’t know where it comes from. When you have adversity, the cream of the crop rises to the top. So do the turds. That’s the way it is. People start pointing fingers real quick and it’s easy to point fingers at the head coach. But that shouldn’t even be a topic of discussion, in my opinion."

  • Tuberville said Chris Slaughter is still on the team. He missed the game because of a family health situation.

  1. Yada yada yada. Tubs gets paid handsomely to coach, and if he didn't want the speculation, he shouldn't have requested to paid this much. He gets exactly what he asks for.

My vote for quote of the day-- Bosley- "When you have adversity, the cream of the crop rises to the top. So do the turds. That’s the way it is."

  3. Eddie we deserve a refund. I have watched a lot of football today and I saw emotion on every staff except ours. All I saw with us was CTT chewing on his headset.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Thanks, eddie. Turds love company. Bosley gave his all to AU, but the adversity he talked about was caused by the HC's decision.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I can understand and respect Bosley's loyalty. I believe most Alabama players felt the same way about Shula.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Anonymous9:26 PM

Yep, the cream of the crop does rise during adversity. Too bad we didn't have any of that cream of the crop Bosley was referring to, because no one (including Bosley) rose to the occasion during this year of adversity. WDE anyway though!

  7. Eddie, you are right. Jason is loyal, and that's OK.

Sorry for the NASCAR analogy (I'm not even a fan) but we didn't change the oil in the car, and we've blown our engine. Changing the pit crew isn't the answer ... it's the crew chief.

Perception drives the train, and our train is off the tracks.

Actually, only turds with a high fat content rise to the top, the classic floater if you will

    ReplyDelete
  9. that's funny because as stuff has been getting tough I have seen more and more of Jason Bosley...turds really do rise to the top!

  10. I set aside my disappointment in TT for this game, and hadn't said anything all week (at least that I can remember), but I'm not going to hide it now.

I like him. I just don't see how he turns it around.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Super very true in what you say.. What AU has built in the last 4 years has been tossed out the window. Just listening to the announcers we have been relegated to the Miss St status. How can a team in one year be overmatched in a game with a team coming off probation.

    ReplyDelete
  12. We don't do a very good job of developing players, IMO.

A very unfair part of life today is that you have to change certain things and people often to keep people's attention focused.

My guess is that Coach Yox's act has worn thin. Doesn't mean he's not a good coach, but we don't seemed to be as well conditioned in the past.

That is a matter of effort. When you're rocking along, the CEO approach can work. When you're chasing, it's a recipe for disaster. And we seem content to double the recipe.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So much for the basketball redemption: Men lost to Northern Iowa today.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Also, CTT has done a lot for Auburn. But AU has also made CTT a VERY wealthy man, so it has hardly been charity work he has contributed. I once heard a coach's wife comment "we pull for whoever puts groceries on our table." It is a business for everyone except the fans but fan interest is what keeps the dough rolling in.

  17. Thanks Jay for all the hard work.

Phillip Marshall says Tubs to come back again. I can't wait. Who isn't going to be excited about Tubs returning next year. I love the enthusiasm. Geez louise.

I think we need change at the AD spot and both the basketball and football coaching spots.

the only positive i can see from a loss this season is that we can now save the cash we would have had to pay for 2009 property taxes in T Town. i would also like to say that SayBear showed class tonight by not trying to run up the score at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  27. not tryin' to change subject. but one good thing that we did today is atleast when getting our butts kicked we didn't lose it and start royal rumbling it on the turf like notre dame is currently

did Tubs' comment about the search for a new OC mean that we might have some new assts' on offense??? maybe it was the multiple adult beverages, but i heard in the post game that however comes in is bringing their own assts.

  30. Losing to Dayton, ok. Losing to Northern Iowa, well it just proves what I say about having better basketball players who know fundementals and make extra passes, hit the open man, play good man to man, you get the picture.

"We've got to recruit some guys that can make big plays. We don't have that.

Whose fault is that? And when you DO have playmakers, why is it that they sit on the bench? (See Fannin vserus Georgia. See Chris Slaughter. See Tristan Davis. For that matter, see the first half of the season with Chris Todd and Kodi Burns. Clueless. Just clueless.)

Tuberville said Chris Slaughter is still on the team. He missed the game because of a family health situation.

    R..I..G..H..T!

Tuberville is FOS. Give it a few days and the lie he tells here (or just the utter cluelessness...take your pick) will become apparent.

Fire this man. FIRE HIM NOW!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I get depressed when I see football teams with offense. I have forgot what that looks like. Anonymous do not forget that we are not physical because spring took physical out of our offense. That quote blew my mind. Who's fault was that. Did CTT just show up on Saturdays?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am with Bosley and it appears that many have now been classified as turds.

Tuberville needs the chance to correct his mistake. I am not sure he will get it, but my gut says he gets next year, but his career at Auburn will be decided by his choice of OC this time. Unless we win 8 games next season, he will likely be gone. Heck, it might take 9.

This is truly the first bad season we have had under Tuberville. Everyone deserves at least one Mulligan every now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous10:39 PM

Well, as an alumnus, I'm relieved. Tuberville has a plan: (1) Figure out a strategy; and (2) recruit playmakers.

    Wow. That's simple.

    I'm a believer.

You know what would be nice? To have a ruthless S.O.B. for a coach who wants to grind his enemies into dust.

Saban's a prick, but he laid it out on the sidelines to his players when they were up 22-0. Tracy Wolfson heard him say to them, "Don't you know how much I hate these ****ing guys?"

I want one of those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous10:42 PM

    Steve:

Think about what Tuberville's pissed away since '04. We've gotten steadily worse.

He was way too happy to be coy last year, duck hunting while Sexton was pimping his name for every available job. He got lazy and got his ass handed to him in recruiting. Saban signed the top class in the country, and now we're getting commits from guys who pick us over Southern Miss and Memphis and East Carolina.

He's pissed away so much, and has run the program into the ground.

I'm afraid he'll be back. I just hope he's forced to fire Nall, Knox and Gran. They commit larceny every time they cash a paycheck.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Question for all that are still up. What do you want to see happpen?

    ReplyDelete
  43. bowies freaky space jumper, from what I heard Tuberville will let the OC choose his assistants, so it is basically up to the OC if there are more changes to the offensive staff.

Anonymous, what information do you have about Slaughter to justify you calling Tuberville a liar? Do you have some inside info?

Jet Ain't No Sunshine Till He's Go, the CEO approach is exactly what I expect from a head coach. If he is having to tell the OC or DC how to coach, he picked the wrong coordinators and needs to wise up. Some coaches like Spurrier may mirco-manage the offense, but in general it is a bad idea.

I can't believe there are fans that would criticize Bosley. He was an overachiever in terms of his Auburn career.

I see no issues with the AD, but I am curious what problems people have with Jacobs. He seems to be getting the facility improvements made, so I do get the concern.

Jet Ain't No Sunshine Till He's Go, the conditioning changed for the glorious spread. As for developing players, the most glaring issue has been the development of receivers and the QB to some degree. They do not look prepared.

As far as Chris Todd, he played well early and we won a couple we may have not without him. He was no long term solution and I think Franklin did a poor job of bringing Kodi along. After about the 4th game it was clear that Todd's arm wasn't going to last. At the point Kodi had not been given enough playing time and couldn't run the offense. Todd had the knowledge and Kodi had the athletic ability. That is purely Franklin's fault. Kodi should have been brought along quicker. I appreciate what Todd did for Auburn, but unless he gets to where he can zip the ball, he shouldn't be the starter. We have too many other talented players at QB.

Yes, the Iron Bowl and the season stunk. I can't remember ever having a season with no impressive wins. We didn't beat anyone I would consider a good team.

Tuberville says he can fix it. Now, show me.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous10:58 PM

Tubs says "this is our first bad year, we have been really good for a long period of time."

If you keep saying it, eventually they will believe it . Those of you on here that actually do buy into that (Steve from Columbia being one) are suckers.

    ReplyDelete
  45. J. Kev, this has been the first bad season since 2004. Jetgate does have something to do with the quality of this graduating class. We had very good teams in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 we had 11 wins. It seems ridiculous to call that a decline. 9 wins in 2007 wasn't great but it was good, although the offense stunk. This is the first truly bad season under Tuberville.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tim, all you have to do is look at the record to know it is the truth. So, I would rather be a sucker than illiterate.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If we are still paying for jetgate then next year we will pay for SACS.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Steve,

Are you freakin' kidding me with the Chris Todd played good in the beginning of the year again. When? The LAMO game when Kodi outplayed him but got hurt. The MSU game when we scored 3 points. The LSU game with the moonballs for INT's.
He was awful. We are awful. CTT can't fix this crap. Unfortunately, he will get a third chance.

Oh yeah, he already had his bad year. It was in 2003.

    ReplyDelete
  49. KJtiger, as for what I want to see happen, I want to see Tuberville bring in a proven OC that isn't a young guy that will be gone after one or two years.

Even more importantly, I want to see Tuberville develop loyal coordinators that stick with him. Is Rhoads one of them? Maybe.

The biggest knock I have on Tuberville has been instability of coordinators. He needs to find good coordinators that are in their 50s and not looking to be HCs.

As for next season, I consider an 8 win season a must. If he can't do that, we need to find another coach.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anonymous11:03 PM

Our SEC record has declined every single year since '04.

If we'd shown up against Arky or UGA in '06, we'd have won the west.

One SEC championship in 10 years.

    Two trips to Atlanta.

Tuberville wins a big game now and then, but he lays an awful lot of eggs. He's an underachiever.

This season was a culmination of a trend, not an anomaly.

He should be fired, but he won't be, because way too many Auburn people think 8-4 is a good year.

We're the second worst team in the SEC. It's pitiful. And it's not gonna change.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If you can't get up for your biggest rival with a chance to make something out of a lost season and two weeks to prepare, then somethings gotta give.

    ReplyDelete
  52. jim in scranton, look at the stats. The issues early on were not the QB. The stats prove that.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anonymous11:06 PM

We were well prepared to play. They were the best team we have played so far this year. We are getting better.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous11:09 PM

CTT is the biggest Con Man around. He has got so many fans into beleiving that 8-4 is good. Steve happens to be one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  55. J. Kev, we are the third winningest team in the SEC this decade, or at least we were before this season. We were the second winningest in the east. To say that we don't go 13-0 every season is ridiculous. That sounds like Bambi logic.
We have not had an 8 win season since 2004 until this year. 2003 was not a bad season. Look at who we played. The GT game was a disappointment, but we played a lot of good teams. People that base the quality of a season on the number of wins are simply ignorant. Utah should play Boise State for the NC if that were the case.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Steve I thought that is what borges was. He was a OC that was not going to be a HC. We all know what happened there. Im not sure CTT can develope coordinators. All the good ones leaveand the rest we fire. That in itself should be a red flag. Prety soon the head honcho must pay the piper.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anonymous11:10 PM

    Steve = CTT press secretary

    ReplyDelete
  58. Tim, you are a blatant liar. Where did I say 8 wins is a good season. That is a blatant lie. I said the number of wins doesn't define how good a season is.

    ReplyDelete
  59. And surprise surprise, anonymous is a liar too. How cute.

    ReplyDelete
  60. KJtiger, you make a very good point about Borges. That is a red flag because I do believe Borges is a good OC. I also believe getting rid of him was a mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anonymous11:14 PM

Wins without a championship equate to not much. How do you define a successful season Steve? Blackmon getting his degree?

    ReplyDelete
  62. No need to look up the stats on Chris Todd. All I know is that we scored 10 offensive TD's in 8 SEC games. Bama scored 5 against us today. How can anyone see how this improves just with the hiring of an OC next year and no change at the top.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Steve I think he was a scape goat for a poor recruiting effort. Someone had o go and we were going down hill on offense. The problem I have is that we have not had that recruiting effort since carnell, and ronnie. Where is the bring everyone to the house mentality. If you look at TT tenure at AU besides 04 and 05 our offense has been average at best. Football is changing and offense needs to produce not just eat the clock. Defense and kicking game just is not cutting it anymore. It seems we are always young, hurt, or the competition is great. When is it our time to shine?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous11:18 PM

I've got to give Tubs some credit, he parlayed that 04' season into a truckload of money. Otherwise, in 7 of his 10 years at Auburn he's lost 4 or more games. That is the definition of average.

    ReplyDelete
  65. What does Blackmon getting his degree have to do with a successful season?

    ReplyDelete
  66. kmo171, the definition of average or mediocre is winning half your games. Being the 3rd winningest program in the SEC this decade cannot be considered average.

What do I want to see happen? I want to see you bunch of bloggers who know so much about football but who work in some other field turn your computers off! That's the best thing that could happen at the moment. You guys think you know so much. I'd love to see you on the job Monday morning and get news that the sales you missed over the last quarter are going to cost you your job. Or your department didn't meet the deadline on the project that you led and you will be released. Oh, I know you all will have something to say about this post but you all know you'd be begging for mercy if it was your job on the line. You should all be judged in your profession by the same standard and your job performance inspected with the same amount of scrutiny that you're using against Coach Tuberville.

Hey, we're bummed about to the game today. We're bummed about the season, too. Project 7 years into the future and answer the question would you like to have another streak of 6 wins and 1 loss against Bama - you'd take the 6 and 1 any day!

One more thing - if you're world revolves around a college football season, then you're all a bunch of losers yourself. Where is your sense of purpose? Wrapped up with trying to answer the question whether or not the head coach at Auburn should be allowed to stay or be fired? Funny, but none of you are in a position to even have your voice heard! That should tell you plenty!

Well, go ahead and have fun with this response. I'm sure you will, but in the meantime, why don't you seriously consider changing sides - Bama needs folks like you to jump on their bandwagon. I think I'll take stock, too - First question for me is "Why do I even bother reading the comments on these stupid blogs made by a bunch of whiners?" I can sure spend my time more productively if I stay away!

    Steve:

One SEC championship in a decade.

    One.

Two trips to Atlanta in a decade. That's as many as Houston Nutt had in Arkansas in the same time period. As of last year, Nutt's SEC record was 42-38.

What that tells me is that Tuberville chokes. A lot.

He and his staff quit on this team this season. Having Mario Fannin on the sidelines at the end of the UGA game was disgusting, and Tuberville should be punched in the face for it, as well as his little sycophant, the worthless Eddie Gran.

The team quit today. But I don't blame them. Their coaches quit a long time ago.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Jim, the head coach doesn't coach the offense, so your post doesn't make much sense in terms of scoring more points.

    ReplyDelete
  70. J. Kev, your post is ridiculous. Nobody should be punched in the face over a questionable coaching decision. If you would do that, you belong in jail.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Winning half of your games isn't average, come on people.

    ReplyDelete
  72. KJtiger, you made some good points. I am out of here, but the best point was that Tuberville likely made a mistake getting rid of Borges. I do believe part of the offensive problems are with the receivers coach, Knox. Out of the offensive staff, he is the one I wonder about.

I'm afraid without new blood coming in that will bring some excitement to this program, the streak that started today might last for awhile.

    Steve:

I might give some credence to what you say if you hadn't made this remark:

"People that base the quality of a season on the number of wins are simply ignorant."

That may be the dumbest thing I've ever read on Jay G's little Blog of Hate.

What do you base the quality of a season on, if not wins?

You shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.

    ReplyDelete
  76. So who told Mario Fannin he could shake and bake? If it was a coach, he should be gone. More than likely it was a friend. Anyway, the thing that made him good was hitting the hole hard no questions asked. He looked horrible today.

Let's see, Kodi Burns looked horrible too. Can he really be the guy? I thought he had made some strides, but I am really not sure.

Then Auburn gets blasted to finish the week off. What a Saturday.

Also, some people talk football not because their opinion will change anything, but because it is fun to talk football. If we only discussed things we had control over then we would talk about little else than what we will eat for dinner and how much toilet paper we use to wipe the cream of the crop off our butts.

Steve, I guess it's a matter of opinion, but in college football I wouldn't call a .500 winning percentage average. Regardless, it's not just a matter of wins and losses. Tubs has what, one SEC title, and 1 BCS win in five years? Thats not deserving of his salary. Just to compare that four loss stat with some other SEC Coaches, and their records at their SEC schools:

Fulmer had seven four loss season in 17 seasons with four of them coming in the last four years. Spurrier has six in 16 SEC seasons with four coming the last four years at SC. Saban has three in seven seasons with two coming at his first year at LSU and Bama, and that goes without mentioning his two BCS wins. Richt has two four loss seasons in eight seasons. Meyer has one in four and has already the same number of BCS wins as Tubs. Les Miles even just has one four loss season in four SEC seasons.

  91. kmo171, by definition average is 50%. If you want proof, you can do so by counting up the number of times an SEC team beat another SEC team this season. Then count up the number of times an SEC team lost to another SEC team. To get the percentage of time that an SEC team beat another SEC team, divide the number of wins divided by twice the total number of games play, since there were 2 SEC teams in each game. Do the same for losses. Divide the number of losses by twice the number of games. Stranglely enough, you will come up with 50% if you multiply those numbers by 100.

  92. Anonymous, again you cannot read. I never said 2003 was a good season. I just wasn't bad and recently we haven't been loosing 5 games a season.

And for you not to be able to understand why the number of wins is not what determines a good season is incomprehensible to me. Would a loss to ULM be just as bad as a loss to Bama, the number one team in the nation. Your logic seems flawed.

  95. If you are average at what you do, you don't lose your job. I don't know too many coaches that can go 6-6 every year and keep their job.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Here you go Barkley. Most any dictionary has the definition.

  97. barkley for governor, the coach at Vanderbilt can, but I don't see your point. I never said average coaches don't loose their jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Who was hotter - Merriam or Webster? I say Webster.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Average isn't defined as 50%, it doesn't matter though. I hope you really don't consider 6-6 an average season just because the dictionary tells you it is.

    ReplyDelete
  100. A more realistic way to judge Tuberville's performance is to compare his winning percentage against other Auburn coaches. Give that a shot and see if he is above or below the average winning percentage. Actually, there is an easier way to do it. Just look up Auburn's all time stats and compute the winning percentage. If Tubervilles winning percentage is close to that number, I would consider him average. How do you define close? Well, then you would have to calculate the standard deviation. If he is within + or - the standard deviation from the average, I would consider him average, although technically he wouldn't be.

    ReplyDelete
  101. barkley, since every football game ends with one looser and one winner or two teams that tied, by definition average is 50% for football games. If we can figure out a way for two teams to loose or win a game, then you have a point.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I don't like being technical. 6-6 sucks. 5-7 sucks worse.

  104. Anonymous12:40 AM

I'm well aware of what an average is, thank you tough. I specified that in my opinion I don't believe a football team that finishes with a .500 record is "average." That being the adjective form, per dictionary.com "typical; common; ordinary." I don't want to argue semantics over the web, but I wasn't referring to a mathematic number, maybe it would've been better for me to use a different word instead. Anyways, point being, Tuberville has a lot higher percentage of four loss seasons than any of the other top tier SEC coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Anonymous12:41 AM

I think that AU ought to perform on the field in a manner consistent with the amount of money we pay our coaching staff.

I think any time you lose 3 or more games to teams that aren't good enough to be ranked in the final AP Top 25, it's a bad season.

We have 4 such losses this season, including defeats at the hands of a 7-loss team, a 6-loss team and a 5-loss team.

I submit to you that, given the athletic talent we had on the 2003 team, that losing 5 games was a bad season, despite the tough schedule. Losing 5 games in 2001 was also bad, as our schedule was considerably weaker than in '03.

I could also make the same argument as you, that the number of wins doesn't determine whether a season is good or bad, and say that our 11-2 mark in 2006 was still a bad season, because the two games we lost (both at home, both to teams with true FR QBs) were games we should have won.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Barkley, I agree. This hasn't been a bad season. It has been a horrible season. This gets back to what I was saying about quality of opponents mattering, not just number of wins and losses. This is one of the worst seasons I can remember since I have been following Auburn football. It is right up there and just as bad as the 3-8 season of Bowden.

I have been following Auburn football since around 1970. I don't recall off the top of my head a season where we had fewer wins over quality opponents. To me, wins over UTM and ULM don't even count. They aren't in our league. Southern Miss is almost as bad, but they do have a history of upsetting SEC quality teams. The wins over MSU and UT felt like losses and we could have easily lost both of those.

And there is something else. How many games have we played that I felt we played a good game. We haven't played a complete game all season. Southern Miss was our big win this season. MSU and UT were caca.

Yes, I do believe this ranks up with the worst seasons at Auburn in the last 38 years. Geeze, I am getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  107. kmo171, until this season Auburn was the 3rd winningest team in the SEC this decade, so facts say different.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I don't agree with all of SteveFC's points, but I am with the gist of it. Keep Tubs, etc. This is probably because he is a fellow engineer (anyone diggin the standard deviation talk?) who sees things more mathematically without involving as much emotion. Anyway, yeah, Tubs screwed up and certainly deserves to be fired. In my opinion, though, we have a better chance of being good the next few years if we keep Tubs and bring in new offensive personnel..

That is just my opinion. I don't feel like an idiot, so I am probably not one. No one is wrong around here because no one knows the future, so people around here should stop acting like everyone who doesn't think like them is an idiot. That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Anonymous, I agree with a lot in your last post, although in 2003, we didn't loose to a bad football team. Ole Miss had one of their best teams. GT was the worst team we lost to and we simply played horribly in that game. The other losses were to top notch teams including the two national champs.

As for 2001, that was while we were still in the building phase of the program. Tuberville was still buidling our program. Bowden left a mess. It wasn't a great season, but it was good in comparisons to where we were.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Anonymous12:56 AM

Actually, there is an easier way to do it. Just look up Auburn's all time stats and compute the winning percentage. If Tubervilles winning percentage is close to that number, I would consider him average.

Well, that's a dicey proposition, as anyone familiar with the AU program knows that the administration deliberately 'de-emphasized' the sport for 30 years beginning in 1923, with predictable results. How about we go with the 48 years prior to Tuberville's hiring, as that coincided with the hiring of Shug Jordan?

    AU win %age 1951-1998: .675
    AU win %age 1999-2008: .680

    AU SEC win %age 1951-1998: .595
    AU SEC win %age 1999-2008: .634

I'll let you compute the standard devs on those, but offhand I'd say Tubs looks pretty close to our historical average since we started taking football seriously again in '51.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Michael, excellent post. And as for you not agreeing with everything I type. That is okay, I don't agree with everything I type either.

"In my opinion, though, we have a better chance of being good the next few years if we keep Tubs and bring in new offensive personnel.."

That is why I say Tuberville should stay another season. It isn't out of some misguided loyalty. When you start playing head coach roulette, it can set the team back for decades.

If I felt there was a coach we could get that could step in and do a significantly better job than Tuberville, I would be all for it. I don't think anyone, including Butch Davis, would do any better over the long haul.

So, instead of waisting $6 Million to get rid of a good coach, use the cash to get a great OC. That much money will pay a lot of years of OC salary.

As for Tuberville coaching, being the head coach is being a CEO. I know some people have the view that CEO's don't do anything, but that is far from the truth. The truth is that a head coach is more involved with things such as recruiting, the impression of the program, discipline, and acting as a manager than he is being a coach. A head coach in college football often resembles an NFL manager in terms of getting the talent and maintaining the team.

    ReplyDelete
  112. FearlessFreep, the period you chose is when Auburn had its 3 winningest coaches, so that would make Tuberville above average.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Another way would be to compare Tuberville with the greatest Auburn coaches, namely Dye and Jordan. He compares favorably.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Dye leads 4-1 in SEC championships vs Tub.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Anonymous1:53 AM

The period I chose to compare was the nearly 5 decades of football we played at AU prior to his arrival in '99. A period which included all 5 of our NCAA probations, plus the entire SEC careers of Paul Bryant and Vince Dooley, and the peak years of Steve Spurrier and Johnnie Vaught, collectively the 4 winningest SEC HCs in the modern post WWII era.

We are performing about as well under Tuberville as we have under any other HC in our recent history. No better, no worse.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Dye played in a different era before the championship game. Compare with Shug Jordan too.

Choosing the beginning of Jordan's run is misleading because Jordan and Dye were the winningest coaches in Auburn history. To compare modern football seems reasonable, but then you should compare Tuberville's winning percentage against other head coaches. The only others outside of Jordan and Dye over that period were Barfield and Bowden. Tuberville compares favorably with Jordan and Dye.

  117. Goooood Morning HABOTN Hotties!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I guess we all approach this individually with our own biases, experiences, etc.

If you are a 30-year-old engineer, you'll look at it mathematically and through the prism of one who's basically enjoyed AU success throughout their life.

If you are 45 and sketchy with math, then you think more with feel, perception and momentum, you have another viewpoint.

No one around here is a liar, or an awful person -- as far as I know.

I will tell you I'm hard core. I will say the thing that bothered me about JetGate in 2003 was that they didn't finish the deal because I didn't think Tommy "got it."

But he survived and thrived for three years, but we've been slipping for two years while the world around us is steamrolling into the future.

In today's economy, your stock can tank on one bad report ... our stock has been dropping for two years ... the Franklin firing at midseason has turned out to be a huge mistake because all it bought us was a win over UT-Martin. What it did was unveil to the world our total dysfunction.

I don't take people's livelihoods lightly, but no CEO would survive this, and this one shouldn't. He would get a golden parachute. As for the staff, the ones that want to continue to coach will get an opportunity elsewhere. Plus, they got vested as we all remember.

So what happens if we make a change and go 20-28 over the next four years? My argument is that we're set up to do that with the staff we have right now because our momentum is shot.

I say be bold. Make the change.

  122. Jet, that sums up my thoughts very nicely. I've yet to hear a good argument on letting a coach who botched the last hire so badly make another move. Did any of the CTT supporters hear Franklin in his interview? Hardly any communication between he and the HC before and after his hire. Unbelievable.

We're Auburn. We're bigger than one lousy game and/or one heinous season. We'll be back.

BOZ was definitely talking about the whining fans. A player's dad mentioned to me how some of the players can't believe how negative the internet fans are. I hope more players speak out. Let's just go ahead and really get our dysfunction out for all of the world to see. Maybe after all of that, folks will gain some reasonable perspective.

The national sportscasters are once again shaking their heads at the neurotic fan behavior. It's almost as if some folks love that attention and aren't even embarrased.

The SEC has parity similar to pro ball and eats coaches. Most any good coach is now going to want $3mil/year to come into this circus. So if every team pays $3 mil/year and "expects" 10 win minimum seasons, then the coaching carosel will continue and never get satisfied. Nice example of loyalty to send to the kids..huh?

Go ahead and continue the typical SEC-fan rants and "expectations"...sorry for the interruption.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Anonymous10:15 AM

    Hoopie,

    I'm going to disagree somewhat...

Looking at it from the outside, I don't think it is unreasonable at all for Auburn fans to EXPECT a better performance against their biggest rival....especially with two weeks to prepare.

    That offensive performance was Shulaesque.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Good post Reynolds. We are Auburn and we will be back. This fiasco of a season is behind us. Things will be different next year with or without Tubs. And I will be sending in my TUF donation and purchasing my season tickets and flying my AU flag in my front yard and purchasing my AU tag and wearing my orange and blue until I'm six-feet under! WDE!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Same time frame in the 1st 10 years...

Dye 4 SEC championships Tub 1

    Dye 9+ win seasons (6) Tub 9 + win seasons (6)

    Dye 10 + win seasons (4) Tub 10 + win seasons (2)

Dye top 10 finishes (5) Tub top 10 finishes (2)

When Dye coached, it was 12 games per year including the bowl. Tub has had at least one more game 7 times in 10 years thus a chance to get an extra win.

Tub has been good, maybe even comparable at times to the Dye era, but also like the Dye era (90-92) the decline has came fast and out of nowhere.

There is no reason at all for this to have been a 5-7 seasons, much like there was no reason for us to lose 4 games last year.

    ReplyDelete
  130. agree with reynolds and hoopie. for my 2 cents worth, with the exception of vandy, ole miss, bama and florida, every team in the sec had a disappointing season (and vandy only becasue they are bowl eligible--the 2nd half of their season was disappointing). It happens to every school now and again.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Parity is one thing. However getting crushed 36-0 by your biggest rival isn't parity, nor is it an unreal expectation to expect more than 0 points and 170 yards.

Beating Vandy, Ole Miss & Arkansas when you have better and sometimes far better talent than them at almost every position aren't unreal expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Faker - Have any leftovers?

    Yay, Reynolds!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Its going to be a long offseason for the team with a lot of soul searching with everyone on the roster, top to bottom. Bottom line is that tubs will have to clean house on the offensive side of the ball or he will be gone. Absolutely no reason for it to be that bad yesterday, CTT said the talent level is similar (which I don’t believe) but that comment itself puts more of a bull’s-eye on his back. Granted the QB's were awful this year but the RB's are in steep decline as well. The fumbles and going the wrong way on a play is unacceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Bowie ... I had to delete that one. I don't think you were talking about the wind blowing.

Were you surprised at the Croom announcement yesterday?

I figured he would get one more year.

What about this possibility.....Fulmer to MSU?

    ReplyDelete
  138. There was no leadership on this team. Someone has to step up.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Kodi Burns made progress in the 2nd half vs Ole Miss and played decent vs UGA. However the "performance anxiety" that Jay talked about came back big time yesterday.

Down 16-0 and 22-0 he was still just throwing 4 yard passes. I'm sure he had reads downfield and could have taken a chance or two, but he seemed to play scared of making a mistake again. If that's the case we need to get a different QB in for next year.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Anonymous10:44 AM

    Regarding Kodi's performance yesterday:

In his defense, I would imagine that Alabama gave him more different looks than in any game he has been in this year.

I'm no coach, but it looked like Alabama was dialing up some "stuff" especially after they got up by 10

    ReplyDelete
  141. I'm sure they did they have a great D, but it's still no excuse for throwing the same 4 yard crossing route almost every time he drops back.

If his nerves cause him that much difficulty when they kick in, maybe a starting QB in the SEC isn't the place for him.

    ReplyDelete
  142. We looked 2 steps slower than normal on offense yesterday . One thing I will not do next year is listen to hype from coach's. IE.. fannin is a play maker, slaughter best hands on team (but never plays)Defense built for speed (our lbs are very average). I will support Auburn no matter what but will not listen to coach hype any more.

  146. tigerfan, agree totally. No more buying into the hype. I will believe it when I see it. First game against WV. We better be ready.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Guys, I made a comment during the game about the defense and how I thought they played with pride but were just worn down.

They deserve better and THIS offense and its coaches suck. Tommy Tuberville fired a guy who played winning offensive football and half-assed the interview process when replacing him.

HE DESERVES TO BE JUDGED ON THAT as well as his record over-all. But, DIRECTION of the program should also be evaulated.

We all know the offense stinks but what can be done?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Some people were worried that if we make a change that it would take years to get things back on track.

Why does it have to be that way? If you make the right hire, then it shouldn't take years.

The question really is, do we trust Jacobs and others to make the right hire?
