Assessing the situation

Hey everyone. Hope you had a swell Thursday. I snagged a Blu-Ray player, which was a nice surprise. Also snagged Discovery Channel/BBC's "Planet Earth" on Blu-Ray DVD. I'm in good shape.

What about the Auburn Tigers?

STILL NO STAFF:
Gene Chizik, your new football coach, hasn't yet announced even a single hire. His coaching staff is barren. I'm 100% sure he already has come to terms with at least a few guys. Timing is the thing. I'd start looking for announcements next week, though I don't expect that staff to be filled out and working together until the first week of January.

STILL NO MAJOR RECRUITING CHANGES: Auburn has "lost" some recruits, though that's bound to happen with a regime change. Some kids loved the former staff and wanted to play only for them. The current head coach perhaps isn't enamored with some of the current or former commitments. This will take time to sort out. The new and obviously aggressive approach Chizik is using will yield some short-term gains. This kind of stuff always does. Parlaying that initial interest into a long-term advantage will be the key to Chizik's long-term employment prospects.

CHIZIK ASSERTS HIMSELF LOCALLY: Chizik rolled into the houses of several top recruits -- including star Gadsden cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick -- and at least set a tone for The New Auburn. Will it work? A lot of people are impressed with Chizik's gumption.

  1. Jay, any hope of my Christmas list of Malzahn, Searels and Garner? Congrats on the blu-ray player. The Planet Earth series is probably the best HD programming I have seen.

  2. CGC is working hard right now, that's really all we can ask for.

    Jay,
Who do you think the OC will be? NFL guy?

  3. Also, have you heard anything about Trooper Taylor joining the staff?

  6. Scott, I'd love to have that ... could transfer my American Top 40 LPs to AAC. Yummy.

    No idea on Trooper Taylor.

  8. Jan. 15th is another big day for us. Its the last day to declare for the NFL Draft. I saw where Coleman has set a press conference for the first of the year to announce his decision.

I think Sen"derrick will go pro. Its a weak year for DT's and he has been projected in the 1st round in almost all of the draft boards.

Coleman is not a true DE, alot like Quinton Groves was last year. He will play Linbebacker in the pro's. This is a draft loaded with true linebackers. I say Coleman should stay, he would be a lock first rounder in 2010.

But what do I know, these kids get agents, runners and family members in their ear and they dont listen to reason.

  9. We need a key!
wasn't there a movie a while ago about Breaking into Fort Knox.

  10. Here is a good basketball draft story. Down here in Mobile, there was a kid named Kennedy Winston he played for Bama, he had a draft party at WIngs with like 200 people, (by the way he came out early). The draft kept going and going and going. 1st, 2nd, nothing. Didnt get drafted, the kid was speechless, it got so bad the crowd turned on his agent, and tried to beat him up. Now the kid is in Turkey, welcome to your NBA dream Mr. Winston. Ha, another sad story.

PDWT, i remember that.... that wanted to whip his _ ss! that was some crazy sh$@!

  12. There are hundreds like that, kids signing then getting cut. Or using their signing bonus on a $80,000.00 truck then being broked and having to come home and find a job, while trying out for the arena league, which wont be around in 2009, nor will the European league. I guess this year its the NFL, Canada or the real world....lol.

  13. Who started this press conference thing anyway. I am sure some agent was behind first junior press conference. Just think some of these kids act like they are #1 pick and if they stay it will save University.

  14. I almost worked for a sports agent out og college, i interned, i wont say the name, but its a dirty, dirty business, anyone remember Chris Porter and the Money for his mothers house. The agents used runners to get to the kids and fill their ears with crap. Tell them things instead of being real with them. Its sad, that is why an education is always a fail safe, not everyone can make it pro.

  15. Pat like the commercial says everyone will go pro at something.

  16. PDWT:

Your most interesting post reminds me of why I think that all high schools and/or colleges should teach folks about money management. It is another thing that is not being taught at home today. It's amazing to me how many folks don't understand how money and budgeting works.

  17. Haha to all you losers who are working to day! Ha!

Remember Adam Harrington leaving after his junior year at AU? Whatever happened to him?

  18. Add in to all of this ... particularly in hoops ... colleges offering scholarships 8th graders, who are committing.

Then there are the psycho fans, who spend their time on boards and blogs -- wait a minute.

    Forget what I said.

  19. Hey, Michael ... consider me a quadruple loser.

I worked Dec. 24, am working today, will work Dec. 31 and Jan. 2.

  20. Jet, you are such a job addict. Except for when you keep checking HABOTN at work. Don't work yourself to death.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Correction: "worked" should have been rendered "at the office," and "am working" should have appeared as "will be at the office."

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jay G., did you get the BBC's "Blue Planet" as well as "Planet Earth"?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I too will be working Dec 31 and Jan. 2nd. Sick people never take off days. jerks.

  24. I knew my man harrison never stops working.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's right Jet. Hard working guys like me and you are practically heroes

    ReplyDelete
  27. I worked today too. Took that blasted tree down late last night and got it in the attic today. Now to tackle those wreaths.

    ReplyDelete
  28. To Jet and Harrison:

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,

  33. 33

David Conner, DB from Mississippi, is in the process of re-changing his mind and undecommitting.

    Oh, to be 18 again.

"I'm committed unless I change my mind again. But if I don't change my mind, then I'm definitely going to Auburn."

I made that quote up ... but it sounds legit doesn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Michael deflected my post so I was 34 instead of 33. Now I'm 35.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Phredderico ...

Michael is the original post blocker.

    Your scenario is entirely plausible.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That's a seriously solid rap there, Jetarsky.

  42. Good stuff posted by the hotties while we were having family Christmas today; youngest daughter had to work yesterday.
Must give special recognition to the rap by Jet - excellent!
And FSJ, agree 100% on the need to teach money mgt in school. Some of us have tried to get it implemented; most egg heads in control are against it.

A continuing Merry Christmas season to all.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm not crying, Monica.

I just don't consider hip-hop to be music.

  44. Jay G., So James Willis is remaining on the staff?

  50. Great news about Willis,
Curious question: Why wasn't he 'retained' earlier in order to continue a good recruiting front?

  53. Jay in your opinion is Willis a better recruiter or coach. I say recruiter. Personally LB underachieved. When 39 was top back-up something wrong and not just injuries. Bynes had to play to many snaps.

    ReplyDelete
