Dooley drops out

You know a decision is coming when candidates begin dropping out of the competition...

This is from Louisiana Tech:
RUSTON -- In light of the continued speculation, Louisiana Tech head coach Derek Dooley confirmed Saturday that he has removed his name as a potential candidate for the Auburn head coaching position.

“As I have said on many occasions, we are very happy in Ruston and are excited about the continued investments that our administration is committed to making into our athletic program,” Dooley said. “Our team will begin bowl preparation on Sunday and any further speculation about my future would be an unfair and distracting element.”

  1. Dooley Out means he wasn't getting the job. He can sit there and say he is happy in boondocks Lousianna till he is blue in the face, but he would be crazy to stay at, what school is it again????, oh, LA Tech.

When will this coaching search end?

    2008 or 2009?

  2. this is not looking good based on what we heard this morning.

  3. I am ready for this to come to an end. I just want to have a coach in place, so that we can move onto more important things, like how are we going to get to Atlanta next year. I understand that this is being very optimistic but I am just wishing for a coach with fire and determination to be number one.

  4. Turner Gill needs to get this job if it's really down to Gill and Gene Chizik.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I agree Jay, what is the delay??

Look, I know someone on Chizik's staff, and I DON'T WANT CHIZIK. The guy pretty much had to re-organize his staff just to keep his job?? Have we not already seen this dance before? Think back to 2001.

Turner Gill has always been the best choice for Auburn. Can they finally pull that dadgum trigger?

    ReplyDelete
  6. If Chizik is hired... there will be a very large number of TUF's that will not be renewed.
What on earth makes Chizik even an intriguing hire?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh, by the way, if they did hire Chizik over Gill, you cannot tell me race wasn't issue. I will be very disappointed in Auburn and the people that claim to believe in the "Auburn Creed."

Sorry guys, this crap is getting old and I don't get it. I HATE how our university is structured. I can't wait till there are no more Lowders or Rane's on the board.

  8. Folks, just settle down. I have this all figured out. Since Muschamp fell through, they went after the closest thing. Look at it like this. The only difference between Chizik and Muschamp are that Chizik left Texas to take a head coaching position. Both had short coaching stints at Auburn that were very successful. Both left Auburn for Texas. Chizik is Muschamps twin, except Chizik has more head coaching experience. It all makes perfectly good sense now.

By the way, I say we roll Jacob's yard. Who's with me?

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's a good question D Miller.

    ReplyDelete
  10. MrsFrontRim, as for how we get to Atlanta next season, I would say take I-20 or I-85, depending on where you are located.

  12. Well there is a grass roots movement afloat on ITAT to email the PTB like crazy and try to kill any chance Chizik has of getting the job.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would not think race would be the biggest issue if Chizik is picked over Gill. I would look more at the SEC experience and his success at Texas. That said, Chizik over Gill seems absolutely crazy to me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They've been so attentive to the casual fans in the past ...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Eddie, what would make you think race had anything to do with it? I seriously doubt it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've been saying Gill since the moment TT resigned. Why won't they listen to me? Could it be I'm not right?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bigcat- Chizik's is not even meeting ISU's standards right now. Does anyone realize that he came close to getting fired this year?

Sorry, but Chizik isn't the recruiter that Muschamp was. Not even close.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hire Rodney Garner as the recruiting coordinator, and we are good to go.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Steve- Call it gut feeling. Put Turner Gill's resume and Chizik's side by side. Who's the most impressive? Whether we want to admit it or not, if Chizik is chosen over Gill, I will think that, if it was truely down to those 2 candidates.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Eddie..believe me I am NOT for Chizik AT ALL for all the reasons you have mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  21. G Chizik as HC will be the end of Jay Jacobs at AU. I would prefer Gill or Rodney Garner over Chizik. This program is flat-lined, people are divided and we need an enthusiastic HC who can bring in talent and create excitement. To me it is about more than just being a good X's and O's coach. Does anyone really see Chizik sitting in someone's living room after Saban or Richt have been there convivcing them to come to AU? I may have to change my name to very depressed AUfan.

    ReplyDelete
  22. FSJ. Done. Gouge got my email. But I already know he likes Gill. May not matter.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Guys...

I'll take the job. I'm enthusiastic, relentless, & very persuasive...

And I guarantee you we will run the blankety blank ball.....

    ReplyDelete
  24. FSJ, you would never win that last regular season game. You're not hired.

    ReplyDelete
  25. eddie, you do have a point. The HC record isn't what I see as the biggest difference though. Gill is just much more prominent as a recruiter. A couple of years of head coaching experience doesn't prove a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bigcat- I'm not responding personally to you, i'm just ranting out loud so to speak. I know how Auburn has operated in the past by having their successors already named, this time, I don't believe that to be the case. I think this is a cluster (insert bad word).

    ReplyDelete
  27. Gill was voted the #1 recruiter in the country a couple times.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Exactly Steve and Muschamp. Gill is like a freakin' no brainer. On top of being the best candidate for position, he will be a media darling and get a lot of positive exposure for Auburn to get his tenure started with a bang.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The issue I see here has nothing to do with who is the best recruiter or has the best coaching record. It is something even more important for a HC, and that is how the coach is perceived. If I am a highschool kid, trying to pick an SEC West school, I look at the coaches in the west and rank them in terms of their perceived ability. There would be 5 head coaches I would perceive better than Chizik. There would be 4 head coaches I would perceive as better than Gil.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Muschamp...for enough money, my loyalties can be changed... :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I wouldn't have my email address available if I were any of the "PTB" and I'd be surprised if any addy that is floating around actually makes it to the intended recipient. I'm probably wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Money is not going to change Muschamp's mind, and it is because of what Jay G mentioned earlier. There is a backlash coming from the way Auburn has dealt with coaches in the past.

Earlier this season, we got Franklined. Now we are being Tubervilled and he didn't buy us dinner first.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Come on Steve, Gill would be better than Miles.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tuberville is moving his kicker curse to our our coaching search.

    ReplyDelete
  35. IF the whole "they were really in Texas to meet Muschamp" is true and
IF it was all done improperly, without permission, etc. and
IF Muschamp actually did want to take the job...

What would have to happen to make it OK for Muschamp to say, "Yes! I'll take it" without getting in trouble?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Eddie - Are you back from Disney?

I just watched the video wherein the ESPN guys gushed all over Gill after the MACCg win. Yup..we would be media darlings.

I'm normally just focus on X's-O's/fundamentals type guy, but Gill just has a very good feel to it. He fits AU in a lot of the right ways and I think he will be able to attract a lot of talent that is viable to go to AU. CTG will be able to sell AU, whether in Foley, AL, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl or metro Atl.

  38. Nope Monica, Girls are taking a nap. Last day in the parks today, we drive back tomorrow. I'm wearing my HABOTN t-shirt today. Hope to get some picture in front of the castle.

Getting ready to head out in a couple of minutes to catch a parade.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Very cool pic idea, Eddie! Have fun.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Steve I dont think we have interviewed a coach that would rank higher than 4th on a list of SEC-West coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Turner Gill I suppose, just not Chizik...I give up.

    ReplyDelete
  42. AUBigCat, you are correct. Unless Spurrier, Johnson, or Davis were interviewed, all the coaches we have talked with would be ranked in the bottom two of the SEC West.

Mike Leach would have a bigger splash than anyone we have on our list at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Please, please, please don't hire Chizik. I never thought anything, anything would make me discouraged to watch my Auburn Tigers... the 12 Saturdays in the fall are my favorite in the entire year... and if we bring in ANYONE besides Gill or Muschamp, I just dont see how I could possibly be excited for the next 9 months waiting for my Tigers to take the field.

It would definitely be the end of my season tickets...

I'm going to go say a prayer...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am almost ready to say bring Pat Sullivan in. His health may still be an issue and he likely couldn't do a lot of heavy recruiting, but he might be able to bring in a good staff, which is the first thing a new coach needs to do. Bring a lot of Auburn coaches home, such as Garner and Chizik as DC. Even consider hiring Borges as the OC. Get some stability going on here.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It ain't Chizik anymore than it's me. BTW, I am interviewing @ 4 in the lobby of the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Don't tell my wife. She thinks I'm getting coFfee.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow morning I woke up and saw where Lou Holtz is now the leading candidate for the Auburn head coaching position.

This coaching search is starting to resemble the Abbott & Costello routine "Who's on first", but nobody is laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I probably haven't cried in over 15 years, but I swear fo' gawd, if we hire Chizik I will break my streak.

Where's the line for the Hire Gill bandwagon?

    ReplyDelete
  48. could somebody pose as Jay Jacobs, call Gill and offer the job to him?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anonymous1:41 PM

Phred.....If you can hear this from the Big Easy. ......woooo..wooooo...that's the whistle of the Gill Train pulling back into station to pick up more AU fans.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hey ft worth, I saw earlier where you mentioned some news form this morning. I have been out Christmas shopping, what went down this AM?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Chizik was apparently a big name up and coming coach until Iowa State.

"Chizik won the Frank Broyles Award, honoring the nation's top assistant coach and was named on many lists as the nation's top future coach and top defensive coordinator.

In a sense, Chizik's white-hot coaching status a few years ago was a little like current Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Many observers were surprised when he jumped at the Iowa State job to start his head coaching career. Unlike Muschamp, who parlayed his recent success into a head coach designate position at Texas, Chizik opted for the challenges of starting his career at Iowa State."

    ReplyDelete
  52. honestly, i don't remember, but probably the stuff about Chizik.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jet - I was hoping at least you could answer my question with all the IF's in it. I take it that nobody knows.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Muschamp had a few more years in the SEC with Auburn and LSU. Chizik only 2. I can't imagine how Chizik will help recruiting, which is where the season starts.

    ReplyDelete
  55. We made need Saban to come give us the Pearl Harbor/9.11 speech in a few days.

  57. Rivals is reporting Chizik has been hired.

I think I'm about to be sick....

Jay G... Tell me some good news. Tell me it isn't true. Please?

    ReplyDelete
  58. If we hire Chizik there won't be anyone to read Jay's column.

Mon...I don't there is a real answer that makes it OK for Boom. He is now in a position like CTT @ OM or CNS @ Miami. Just say it was the best decision for the family and take the lickin'.

I would hope that if AU is "stealin'" a HC from another team, it would be a blueblood. Not sure it is worth the bad press to do that with an unproven guy.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Thanks for the answer, Hoopie. I wasn't sure if there was some contractual penalty.

    ReplyDelete
  61. This is just pure stupidity. We will be the media's punching bag until this guy gets fired.

    ReplyDelete
  62. is it time to panic yet?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Someone hurry up and tell me Rivals is wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous2:02 PM

Mon....I have no idea regarding the contract. That answer probably depends on whether Boom has signed the HCIW contract yet and if it has penalties/buyouts etc. My guess is that the original DC contract was not a dealbreaker.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Maybe we should all go protest the President's house. I can not believe they would pick Chizik over Gill if that is our two finalist. I can not believe I'm using Chizik and finalist in the same sentence. I'm sick to my stomach now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Seriously, Monica. I agree.

Do not tell me all this happened for Chizik.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Jay, if you don't come one here and tell us Rivals is worse than FOX 10 in Mobile, there may be a mass suicide attempt.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I hope its not Chizik

    ReplyDelete
  69. I had this total response to all this bitterness typed out..then I proof read it and started over..calm down AU nation..I want cheap tickets but not at the expense this kind of divide..so please chill..we gonna be alright. Those of you blessed enough to be season ticket holders, alumni, and well off enough to support AU continue to do so. Without you we'd be nothing..WAR EAGLE

    ReplyDelete
  70. Kathy, in terms of recruiting, the most important thing will be the staff that the new HC gets in. The HC sees fewer recruits compared with the coaching staff. The HC is more of the closer. The assistants identify the talent and get them interested.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Why not just name Lowder the head coach and let's stop this farce?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Exactly, Kristina. I'm sure I'm not the only who notices there is no source named for Tom Dienhart's piece on Rivals.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh, you won't have to worry about cheap tickets if he's hired. They'll be passing them out on the sidewalk.

    ReplyDelete
  74. No NO a THOUSAND TIMES NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jay G Tate hasn't said it, so it can't be true!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Well, according to those Mobile coaches, Saban was all over the place down there recruiting. And we know the players are interested in who our new coach is going to be. Gill would definitely be more exciting than Chizik.

    ReplyDelete
  76. tick tock tick tock
    I have to exhale eventually!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Folks, don't get too down on Chizik. The other coaches on our list aren't that much different. A HC is only part of the equation of winning.

I hate comparing with Bama, but there is a good example here. Once Saban through out the apple sauce and get the right OC, everything changed.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Jay's silence makes me think something is up. He must be busy trying to track down the truth. I'm not sure I can handle the truth!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Phillip Marshall is reporting it as well.

    Unbelieveable.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I did not waste the entire last week of my life for GENE CHIZIK!

    ReplyDelete
  81. new Jay GT post/thread, everyone head on over

    ReplyDelete
  82. Gill would definitely bring more excitement, although that doesn't mean he would be the better coach. I wish I had a better knowledge of what has went on at Iowa State and at Buffalo. There is more to winning than just who the head coach is.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Jay Jacobs is just asking to be fired.

    ReplyDelete
