Late Tuesday update

Hey everyone. Nothing to report from today's late action.

Tuberville has left the building. Jacobs has been meeting with his top assistants, but that apparently included a standard first-of-the-month agenda.

No decision made about the football team.

I'll be back tomorrow morning for ... more of this.

  1. It appears to me this means that Tuberville will be staying. I can't see multi-day discussions required to say your fired.

  2. So in essence your saying that Elvis has left the building. I take it he isn't leaving like CTF did with all of his stuff.

  3. that sucks JGT, see you on the I-85 in a few then

  4. Steve,

Unless, of course, 7 figure buyouts are being discussed or the future of his assistant coaches and he is trying to fight for them up to falling on the sword. My guess is that once it is over one way or the other, NO ONE will have any idea what really happened unless they were there. The information that will be put out will be scripted and not worth the time of Jay G writing it down.

  5. Steve, I also don't see why it would take multi-day discussions to say we're keeping Tubs. I think it could still go either way. I lean toward longer delay meaning they are negotiating terms of his departure.

  6. Jay thanks for the entertainment today.

  7. My inside source says that they are holding a seance, trying to divine the wishes of Shug. For whatever reason, Heisman keeps chiming in and his information is dated. Check the local walmarts to see if anyone is buying quija boards. I saw a ford truck with mont. plates outside of the newest walmart.

Yeah if they were keeping him but discussing some changes then why would they not go ahead and say just that "He will be our coach in 09". I would think the longer it takes the more you would have to lean towards buyout.

  9. I think the "delay" here, is to give Auburn time to see what type of feedback they get from any feelers they have put out regarding a new head coach.

This delay could also be designed to give CTT time to make a decision about the future of his assistants. I can't help but think that he has been told if he wants to stay, then some or all of them must go. CTT is known to be loyal to a fault and may be having a hard time figuring out what to do with such an ultimatum.

I guess it could be some combination of both - TPTB say "Tommy, your new OC needs to name his own staff. If you aren't agreeable to that then there's the door. You have 48 or 72 hours to let us know."

Hell, maybe it's none of the above. I'm just trying to make some sense out of it all I guess.

  10. More time equals not good for CTT. If he stays concessions and control will be given up. THe other reason is that negotiation on his BYE BYE package will be going on. I tend to think if he stays, things that he thought he had won in years past, autonomy and protection, have evaporated just like the last 5 years of gains in the stock market.

  11. Will ... Just checking to see if you were a Will I know, but he's 6'8" so I guess not.

Scottie B, can you confirm whether you received the fax for my T-Shirt order yesterday?

  15. Scottie B.

I am sending my order request out this week via snail mail.

    Cordially yours,

What Jay is saying is that he doesn't know anything. But some closer to the scene do. There's no announcement because they're not sure they are keeping Tubs.

  17. Man, it must be like this morning when I had to decide between grape and strawberry jelly. I don't envy them, tough decisions are hard to make. That is why I didn't have anything for lunch today. I just decided not to make a decision. It's like Rush says, "If you choose not to decide, YOU STILL HAVE MADE A CHOICE!" Pretty heavy, huh?

If they are going to keep CTT, why would they not come out and definitively say so?

How does this state of limbo benefit the football program?

I agree that they have someone (or more) in mind and they are waiting to see if anyone shows interest. I don't think the buyout is an issue at all.

  19. Trey, i got it. it's in the mail as we speak.

    thanks denny.

  20. Food for thought for those who did not catch the Max Rountable today. Apparently, there is a "no shopping" clause in the current contract. If either party "shops" then the contract is null and void.

  21. If you haven't ordered your HABOTN tshirt you're missing out. They look HOT and feel yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Is that before or after you put the shirt on?

    ReplyDelete
  23. i missed that part about the contract today phreddie. thanks. and btw, you sounded quite 'delightful' on the air. nice.

thanks monica. they feel yummy? i bet mr. monica likes that! ha!

  24. Look hot and feel yummy. Sounds like code for girl kissing to me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So how does one prove someone has been shopping? Sounds like something that would messily be done in court, and i have a hard time believing either side would pursue it unless it was egregious.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, Scot(perv)tie, Greg is happy with the shirts too. ;-)

  27. You're exactly right, Michael.

way too late for that, Scottie

I hope they script the information that is put out. It would be irresponsible to do otherwise.

    Should "unscripted" be expected?

  31. This reminds me of my last season at Uof L. More time translated into a graceful departure and a nice 7 million dollar golden parachute for me after a very contentious end of season collapse.

Maybe since Tommy is known as the Riverboat Gambler he can come out to Vegas with me.

Let's see, if I remember correctly CTT wanted his buyout reduced as a condition of his contact extension and he was hardballed out of it, so why should he agree to less now? I wouldn't.

Just imagine..you are an SEC coach that has been working for a BOT that is completely dysfunctional, including one member that hates you and still wields the most influence and a puppet AD. Some fans still support you, but the success at AU and the internet have bred a very vocal group of AU "expectors" that are disrespectful on a personal level equa to Ark or Bama fans. The "expectors" have raised such a ruckus, it affects your ability to hire an OC or attract recruits. Your remaining supporters are tired of holding off the cynicism. Why negotiate?...take the $$$ and the job at MSU and then write a book. It will be a best seller. The rest of the nation loves to laff at SEC fans.

  33. Still here monitoring the situation.

  34. If I didn't think better of it, I would surmise that in the past two years the two groups at Auburn (CTT and the PTB) who are supposed to care the most about the program and the university have really been going out of their way to royally screw both. Last year's drawn out hunting trip was at least partly to blame for us being able to steal recruits away from football powerhouses like Duke University. With the shoe now firmly on the other foot, the PTB seem dead set on ensuring that last year's recruiting success will continue. Seriously and not that he needed the help, but how easy was it for Saban (or any other coach) to call kids that were considering Auburn and paint us for what we are: a dysfunctional family? Now, and at the very least, the PTB by taking so much time to decide what the hell they are going to do have made Tubbs a lame-duck coach in the event that they decide he should be given more time. They almost have to let him go now. He has never really been hard to recruit against anyway and this ridiculous delay in deciding his fate has only made it easier. I'm sick of this crap.

  35. On the bright side, turmoil on the Plains = job security for Jay G = more stuff for us to talk about.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The way I see CTT is under contract right now. Why would yhe jays come out and say he is still under contract. Looks like the only reason to say anything would be to say he has been fired.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jay,

Did you receive back channel information that something was up? Last I heard you were out and heading back to the crib for the night. How are you doing as the number 2 bama writer? I recall you said something about doing that to help. Or did the sports editor leaving give you a reprieve?

Political situations and contract negotiations are complex. Regardless of what happens it is better for all sides to slowly and carefully work out the details, especially before going public. Surely out of all of the folks that were posting on here instead of working today, a few have actually been in political or contractual situations and could explain to the rest.

It is obvious that there is a large group of proudful sports anaylst wannabes waiting to jump with cynical breath on any type mistake that can be "speculated into apparent truth".

Blame the BOT and CTT? OK. Blame the cynicism also. Cynicism breeds negative attention within that causes negative impressions from others.

Finebaum lives off of this stuff... are we living off AU by doing this?

  40. Ok gang this is not my work but it was too funny not to share. I hope I'm not breaking any rules.

Notes from the CTT meeting today:

    AD: Good morning coach.

    CTT: War Eagle.

Pres: What the hell happened saturday?

AD: calm down, let's not start there.

Pres: From what I saw, we never got started.

CTT: We still got em 7 out of the last 10.

AD: Tommy, we don't want to start there either.

    Pres: We looked like crap.

    CTT: The weather was bad.

Pres: Sure didn't slow down Saban.

CTT: He had a good team. Looked like one of our old teams.

AD: Ok, that's enough of the Alabama game, we all know why we are here this morning.

CTT: Is this "the" meeting, cause I was sort of confused yesterday.

Pres: 36-0 (mumbles under his breath)

AD: Tommy, are you sure you can turn this thing around?

    CTT: (holds up 1 finger)

Pres: What the hell does that mean?

    CTT: (smiles)

AD: I'm confused too. Does that mean 1 year to turn things in the right direction?

CTT: (laughing) Nope, that's what I'm going to do, when I beat Saban next year.

Pres: (climbing over desk towards CTT), You... #@&%^$#

CTT: Wo Wo, you better watch your boy Jay.

AD: Coach, I would hope you would take this meeting more seriously.

CTT: Jay, I do have a plan, which involves staff changes to go along with the hiring of a solid OC.

    AD: Good, let's hear it.

CTT: First, I'm going to Arkansas to do some duck huntin (laughing). Seriously, I'm looking at the coach that replaced Franklin at Troy (laughing again). Ok, Ok... I'll stop.

Pres: (whispering in AD's ear) Let's fire him now.

AD: Coach, we really need to hear your plan, everyone is waiting.

CTT: Any chance we can extend my buyout?

    AD: (blinking)

    CTT: I didn't think so.

Pres: Can we finish this after lunch, I think I'm gonna be sick.

CTT: Always leave on a high note boys (darting out the office). See you fellas after lunch, I'm going to eat some Bar-B-Que.
