JAY JACOBS OPENS:
- "He impressed upon us his blueprint to move Auburn football in the future."
- "He was on the path at Iowa State to turn that program around."
GENE CHIZIK SPEAKS
- "This is a very special day in my life. Jay, let me assure you: You hired the right guy."
- "It was amazing how on the same page we were."
- He's complimenting all the new stuff Auburn has built since he left in early 2005.
- "There are so many things that indicate Auburn has a vision."
- "The Auburn people? The Auburn way? I get it. I've been to some great places and not one matches the passion, enery and excitement of Auburn and these Auburn people."
- "It's not just about championships. It's about the whole thing."
- "Shortly after this is over, (recruiting) is where you'll see me. Today. We're going to recruit tirelessly, 24/7. We're going to work."
- "I've made many great, great relationships with high-school coaches in this state. We're going to start in this great state of Alabama where football is very important."
- "We have no secrets here. We'll have an open door for high-school coaches ... and particularly in this state."
- "I want the Auburn football players ... to feel like they're back into an Auburn family. Some may feel it. Some may not. I don't know what's out there. I want all those guys to come back."
- "We're going to move this thing in the right direction."
- On the staff: "I have one goal: To make sure we bring in the best football coach/person/recruiter out there. That's my commitment."
- On his offensive style: "It's 200 years old. On offense right now, you've got to run the football. That doesn't mean we're not going to throw the football. It means that you have to be physical. That doesn't pigeonhole me into any one offense. So many offenses are not one-dimensional anymore."
- On his troubles at ISU: "When I took that job, I was ready to be a head coach. I had done everything I could do as an assistant coach. I was ready. It's not like I walked into that thing and didn't think it was a challenge. I had a blueprint in place. I put it in effect. I never deviated from that one bit."
- How can he win over the fans?: "That answer is really easy. You have to win. There's going to be skepticism no matter who you hire. At the end of the day, what I do know is that this was the right hire for Auburn. I understand this place. I understand these people. I understand how to recruit it."
- Why leave four years ago?: "My desire was to be a head coach. University of Texas had a great track record of moving guys on to jobs. I made the move. If I hadn't made that move, maybe I wouldn't be standing here today."
- Staff revisited: "I've got a plan in place. I've got a really good sense of where I'm going. Some of (the candidates) are still coaching."
- Initial reaction to being hired: "My initial reaction was `War Eagle.' It happened fast."
- Joe Whitt Sr. is recruiting now. Phillip Lolley and Jimmy Perry as well.
- "I love recruiting. I can't wait."
- On Tuberville: "I have not talked to Tommy. I had a great three years here. I was very appreciative of Tommy letting me do my job. There's a fine line between coaching and meddling. I don't plan on micromanaging coordinators. That's why they were hired. I'm going to be out there and I'm going to be coaching."
- "The expectations of the people aren't any higher than mine. My expectations are very high."
- "Last season was a situation I hadn't experienced. We played with 11 true freshmen. We kept persevering. We learned a lot. I learned a lot."
- Head coaches are big recruiters now: "That's who I have to be. When this is over, I'm hitting the road. I'm out of here. I'll spear-head that effort."
- Last night's meeting: "We had a great meeting last night. I let them understand their leader is someone who loves Auburn. I love this place. You need to love the game. We'll hit this thing together."
- Why are you the right guy for the job?: "I love Auburn. I know the importance of football at Auburn. I know the importance of football in Alabama. I get that. The coaches that know me in this state and the coaches who know me out of this state -- they know about my Auburn ties."
JAY JACOBS UP AGAIN
- Surprised by negative reaction?: "I know the Auburn people are going to come together and know that Gene is the right man for Auburn.
- Didn't acknowledge any other candidates.
- "We didn't necessarily have a pecking order. We had a list of candidates we wanted to get to and he was on it."
- "He'll re-energize Auburn with his physical, smash-mouth brand of football. All Auburn people will come together."
- "We have agreed to terms in principle."
- Said Jay Gogue couldn't make this meeting due to a schedule conflict.
- "We didn't compromise our integrity during this search. I went through the front door. We're not going to through agents and all that stuff."
- Discussing Carr & Associates.
- How many interviews?: Won't say who and how many. "Gene was the only one I introduced the president to."
- "There were certain people who declined to interview. Maybe that just weeded out some of the faint-hearted."
- "We wanted someone who was a relentless recruiter, a guy with unbelievable character and integrity, someone who has been in the SEC and had been successful, somebody who has a passion for football -- Auburn football -- and his family."
- Is money no object for assistant coaches?: "No object. Auburn people expect nothing less."
THAT'S A WRAP
Jay you are the man!
ReplyDeleteI do what I can.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Fake Steve here, Conference calls suck, I'm going to miss the entire thing. Jay, thanks for taking notes.
ReplyDeletehttp://all-access.cbssports.com/player.html?code=aub&media=96072
ReplyDeleteYou can watch it here.... Just read lips
Jay you should walk up to the mic and go HELLO CLEVELAND!!!!
ReplyDeleteRiskman, I was thinking something out of Family Guy, but i don't think it's appropriate.
ReplyDeleteOk, I just showered (it was a really long night) and I've got my In Auburn We Believe shirt on so let's get this show on the road
ReplyDeletep.s. I was going to wear my Auburn boxers but I think the elastic got fried in the dryer. Is that TMI?
Hey Peter.... haha great show
ReplyDeleteHas the Auburn media relations team released Aubie's comments on the situation yet?
ReplyDeleteWho is everyone taking a picture of Jay? Auburntigers.com just put the camera on some guy 2 times...
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that's Carlos Rogers and Antarrious Williams?
ReplyDeleteI can't watch the stream right now.
Aubie:
ReplyDelete(Repeated head nodding and wagging)
(Hold up one finger)
(Pull tail between legs, play like guitar)
(Hold up sign that says: Chizzle Is My Hizzle!)
That makes since thanks Jay.
ReplyDeleteBret Eddins in the house as well.
ReplyDeletePat Dye.
I hope that someone gets pictures of those guys being there! That might help recruiting.....
ReplyDeleteis he trying to call me for my input?
ReplyDeletePat Dye, there, nah...HE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT :).
ReplyDeleteCHIZIKS WIFE IS WEARING RED!!! WTF! JAY ASK HER WHY SHE IS WEARING RED!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't need to watch it. Jay G. Tate will tell us everything we need to know!
ReplyDeleteMaybe she got rid of all her Orange and Blue attire...
ReplyDeleteriskman-
ReplyDeletemy wife is a HUGE AU fan, but she once put a purple shirt on our son (he was only 6 but knew right away it was a mistake) on the morning we were going to AU-LSU game.
Women are just oblivious to those sorts of things, no matter how big a fan.
She could of run to Kinnucans this morning
ReplyDeleteis anybody else about to fall asleep
ReplyDeleteI'll give him this, he's been good in his opening statements. Let's see what he does when Jay skewers him though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link, Riskman.
ReplyDeleteLasik, Coach. You can afford it now ... otherwise, he's doing OK.
ReplyDeleteTarheel - Do you know all women?
ReplyDelete"I want the Auburn football players ... to feel like they're back into an Auburn family. Some may feel it. Some may not. I don't know what's out there. I want all those guys to come back."
ReplyDeleteI knew this was up. This is the anti Tubs march. And I'm not sure I don't like it. In fact, this may be a positive.
Great answer ... "I don't want 1/3."
ReplyDeleteHe's referring to the graduated players and coaches that some feel have been kept out of town and involved.
ReplyDeleteHere's a quick video of the presser for those who aren't watching it live.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Al. This whole anti-Tubs movement and rallying around the greater Auburn MAY be good. It's certainly something that at least most people can buy into.
ReplyDeleteESPN News also will show it for those beyond Auburn at 2:15 EST.
ReplyDeleteHow old is Dye?
ReplyDeleteFSJ ... he's 69, I think.
ReplyDeleteLooks 79.
If he's 69 he looks about as bad as Coach Bryant did at 69. Of course Byrant was still coaching.
ReplyDeleteSo basically I was just on WSFA! I'm FAMOUS!!!
ReplyDeleteBut what we're really wondering: boxers or briefs?
ReplyDeleteTAKE OFF THE GLASSES!!!!
ReplyDeleteI asked that question earlier, Faker. How healthy is he?
ReplyDeletePAT DYE IS RUNNING THIS PROGRAM INTO THE GROUND!
ReplyDeleteWhat did Mark Murphy ask that Chizik responded "I can't answer that"?
ReplyDeleteask the question, jay. what about willis?
ReplyDeleteWell, he does not lack confidence.
ReplyDeleteRK, Mark asked him if he knew he was going to be hired after the first interview.
ReplyDeleteriskman-
ReplyDeleteAs Monica has pointed out, I obviously meant SOME women
We're gonna throw it around!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
Make it rain, Geno!
ok, somebody ask him that famous question, "How long is it going to take to beat Alabama?"
ReplyDeleteHey Jay
ReplyDeleteAsk him if he really thought that jacket matched that tie when he was dressing himself in the dark.
Grey is the new power color. Just ask saban.
ReplyDeleteHe has answered the assistants question three times.
ReplyDeleteWillis?
MobileBay-
ReplyDeletelet's give him a break. He's a man, how's he supposed to know what tie/coat matches.
p.s. Mon- no, I don't know all men
I will say that he is better in the PC than I expected.
ReplyDeleteI'm listening when I can.
Better than Shula was in his first one..
Umhh uhhhh, cough, ummmm, uhhh...
Mon - I know all men and his wife is not Kiffin Hot.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know WHY they played 11 true freshmen at ISU.
ReplyDeleteYou can tell from his brief comments about tubs that the two didn't get along very well.
ReplyDeleteLack of talent?
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't lack confidence that is for sure.
ReplyDeleteJay,
ReplyDeleteyou need to get someone to take your pictures so you can have proof "you were there when"....
Bingo relationships!
ReplyDeleteI get the impression that he feels he's the best hire Auburn could have made. I think he said that 4 or 5 times.
ReplyDeleteHigh school recruits all around the state are still wondering who the hell this guy is.
ReplyDeleteJJ - "Gene, how do you think you're team would have done next year if you stay at ISU?"
ReplyDeleteGC - "I'll be honest, probably 4-8, with a win over Colorado."
JJ - "You're hired."
Chizik's done well; Jacobs is a buffoon. Telling that he hasn't spoken to Tommy, but Dye - who looks awful - is in the front row.
ReplyDeletehahhahaah he was real quick to answer that pat dye question. WHAT A LIAR
ReplyDeleteJay - What was the question that got the response "weeded out some of the faint hearted"?
ReplyDeleteLowder is included in the chain of command.
ReplyDeleteWow what an admission.
Wait, there are two Brad's on here now? Crap...One of us has to change. I call heads.
ReplyDeleteWill the real Brad please stand up.
ReplyDeleteStanding, as you can see in my avatar. With Jack in hand. At the AU / WV game.
ReplyDeleteStanding.
ReplyDeleteMon -- asking if all candidates were OK with Jacobs' "front door" approach.
ReplyDeleteHe said Lowder was in the chain of command?
ReplyDeleteThen I go with the standing Brad because I also was in Morgantown.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jay
ReplyDeleteAU1 -
ReplyDeleteI owe you a beer for your support. Vote standing Brad for "Real Brad '08"
Pat Dye talking with Chizik's wife...hahahahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteDye had nothing to do Chizik's hiring...hahahahahahahahahahaha
Him repeatedly saying that Auburn made the right hire was kind of weird. What would you expect him to say? Jacobs, you just screwed the pooch on this one?
ReplyDeleteHe was asked point blank about a booster, and JJ said that we have a process and a chain of command to make decisions. He did not actually say Lowder was in the chain.
ReplyDeleteDon't you need to be able to tell a recruit who your OC/DC is while you're talking to the kid?
ReplyDeleteAs usual with Finebaum's M.O., he says they Chizik threw out several shots at Tuberville. Statements like "I'm the right man", "I know what the Auburn people want" and some others. Anyone else take these as shots at Tubs.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the usual Coaches press conference hackneyed statements to me.
Fbomb - They have no chance to beat Alabama....homer.
ReplyDeleteMonica, when you don't have an OC or DC, how would you tell them who they are?
ReplyDeleteI think he made it plain that some of the coaches he will hire are currently coaching, meaning bowl teams or possibly NFL.
is Chizik out recruiting yet?
ReplyDeleteAren't we in a dead period for recruiting?
ReplyDeleteFinebaum said that Turner Gill could have at least stood his ground with Saban.
ReplyDeleteHuh!!?? Finebaum kills me.
Thank you Steve for making my point.
ReplyDeleteFSJ,
ReplyDeleteDead period Dec 22 Jan 1
I am convinced that Jacobs directed this search and the BOT is not involved. This has been the theme since Gogue arrived. It goes right along with the going through the front door thing. Gogue has layed down the law in terms of how things will work.
ReplyDeleteI wonder who (recruit) he'll visit first? JGT got any ideas?
ReplyDeleteFbomb Auburn Chain of Command
ReplyDeleteLowder
Dye=AU Football Advisor for Lowder
Gogue
Jacobs
Chizik
anybody know if there is any "leniency" in the NCAA rules re: visiting recruits after a coaching change? i.e. can new staff go visit a recruit if old staff already used up the allowable visit(s) for that recruit?
ReplyDeleteTarheel, he needs to call Bobby or Pat and ask him which is more important.
ReplyDeleteon leniency. No, I do not believe so. They are also not very lenient on letting current players transfer after a coach has been fired. Kind of a crappy rule.
ReplyDeleteAU1N04, that is likely the pecking order. I am also pretty sure Dye got his suggestions in indirectly, possibly through Q.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tarheel I knew it was coming up soon.
ReplyDeleteSteveFC,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you; I really think the perception is not the reality.
Jacobs played for Dye, so it doesn't surprise me that he's there.
I am shocked, SHOCKED(!) that you believe that, Steve.
ReplyDeleteThe shots at Tubs were (and I had to cut out) ... Coaches/people/recruiters ... not 1/3, but the whole deal and welcoming the former players.
ReplyDeleteso what did we all get out of that???
ReplyDeleteSo on a scale of 1-10 how did he do during the press conference?
ReplyDelete7.5
Lies, lies, and damn lies PDWT
ReplyDeleteBama fans are trying to say that Auburn is racist now because we hired a white coach instead of a black coach. My question to them is where is there black coach!!!! If that was so important to them why didn't they hire Croom!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am sure Dye wants to have influence and does to some extent. He was obviously going to be there because he knows all the people involved, including the Chiziks.
ReplyDelete*Institutional staff members may have contact with a prospective
ReplyDeletestudent-athlete who has been admitted for midyear enrollment,
provided the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent or
other offer of admission and/or financial aid to attend the
institution and is required to be on campus to attend institutional
orientation sessions for all students.
Totally unimportant note- I went by Byrons BBQ at lunch before the press conference and Tubs and E Gran were in the back corner eating lunch. Some people went over to talk but they seemed to be mostly left alone. Kind of strange to see a big press conference about to start and the former big guy munching on BBQ. Chizik was not my choice, but I like his enthusiasm and hope he turns things around.
ReplyDeleteI give him an 8 out of 10...would have liked more specifics on the plan.
ReplyDeleteThis PC was very Shulaesque in its entirety. How many times does he need to say I love Auburn and I am the right guy for Auburn?
ReplyDeleteI absolutely freakin love it when they asked about offense and all he could say was I'll tell them the rb will run the ball, the receiver will catch it and the qb will throw it. Brilliant!
They just played the guy booing Jacobs on College Football Live.
ReplyDeleteriskman108, I value the opinion of Bama fans just about as much as the last piece of toilet paper I wiped with.
ReplyDeleteNICE!!
ReplyDeleteWe are all over ESPN with the one guy yelling about the crappy hire.
Screaming 5-19!!
Well, I'll say this for Chizik. He doesn't sound like a retard.
ReplyDeleteJacobs, however, is a total retard and totally out of his depth.
Great to see Charles Barkley throwing Auburn under the bus, too. Wonderful to accuse your alma mater of racism.
barkley, that guy booing Jacobs should be real proud. The video will be used for years to make Auburn look bad. Billy Joe Bob, way to go!!!
ReplyDeleteduller than I expected. I don't know, maybe I expected him to lead us in a big bodda getta
ReplyDeleteexactly. I haven't heard any bama fans accuse AU of racism; but, good 'ol Charles says it on national TV.
ReplyDeleteJ. Kev, piss on Barkley. I have no use for him.
ReplyDeleteJay, Gogue not being there seems a bit odd. That's not normal, right? I have hard time buying the scheduling conflict.
ReplyDeleteDr. Gogue not being there doesn't bother me a bit. In fact, if he had been there I would have wondered if he didn't have something more important he should be doing.
ReplyDeleteBarkley ... Chuckster, not HABOTN's preferred gubernatorial candidate ... is a provacateur. Nothing more.
ReplyDeleteHe's a microphone seeker like his enabler ... the radio version of P.T. Barnum in Birmingham.
Chiz gets 7-8 in my book for his performance. I want the coach to say he's the right guy. Never heard specifics at one of these before. Didn't expect to hear them today.
Ultimately, it's about performance ... first test in February, then on the field.
I've definitely settled into the "Chizik's the guy, and as such I'll be behind him 100%" phase. I'm still skeptical and will likely be until the staff comes together.
ReplyDeleteAny chance that Garner moves for an Asst HC / Recruiting Coord gig? I'm not sure he's the right DC candidate, but I guess that depends on how much Chizik will be involved on that side of the ball.
I think Gogue not being there is proper. The school president shouldn't appear too tied in with the athletic program.
ReplyDeleteSure, I could understand the hands-off approach, but it seems that the President could be there to help introduce the new coach. That's a big representative of the university, if not the biggest. It would seem that you would want to support that person if you were the President.
ReplyDeleteWade, I thought it was very interesting that Gooouuuuuggge wasn't there either. Something seems weird about that.
ReplyDeleteA major university just made an extremely important hire, and the pres is absent? Hmmmm.
A point on Gill that I heard on Rivals Radio today from a sr sports writer in upstate NY.
ReplyDeleteSyracuse did not bring him on board because he did not show the passion as Marrrone did. Like he didn't want the job. What if Chizik wanted the job more than Gill? Could explain things more than the white wife.
So Turner Gill expressed his concern that race was an issue to Charles Barkley. It's not just Barkely's opinion.
ReplyDeleteChizik has a white wife.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard Charles say anything that wasn't true, he just forgot to point out who was to blame. He acted like it was the Auburn family who would have been upset with Gill, when it was actually Dye and Lowder.
ReplyDeleteBut perception is reality, and if a prominent alumnus goes on national TV and talks about racism at his alma mater, no one will care about whether or not the candidate in question was enthusiastic.
ReplyDeleteBodda-getta, Bodda-getta, Bodda-getta-bod
ReplyDeleteRah Rah Rah! NO BOOM, Bah!
Izzle, Izzle, War Damn Chizzle!
Kick 'Em in the Butt, Big Blue!
Hey!
jhc, I don't blame anyone for being skeptical. We all have our concerns. We just need to wait and see the decisions he makes.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the decision to get rid of Willis, but the obvious question is who will replace him.
I am also encouraged that they talked about his blueprint for Auburn. That is how coaches are hired. All prospective head coaches keep lists of staff candidates and have an idea of what they would do. It is that idea that is evaluated when picking the guy.
If he can recruit Garner to AU, then that will settle my nerves to a large degree.
ReplyDeleteAnybody believe Chizik when he talks about AU being his dream job? I want to, and I also want to believe he'll be at AU for a long time (if he wins).
barkley for governor, where did you get your informatoin about Lowder and Dye being against Gill?
ReplyDeleteIf omeone else with a little more credibility toward sober commentary, it would be a major issue.
ReplyDeleteBarkley? Just not seeing the man who claims he was misquoted in his autobiography as a voice that carries a lot of weight in the world -- even if it is a loud one.
I've been under a rock since Friday...did I miss anything?
ReplyDeleteGouge should have been at that presser. Period. The biggest, most public hire the university has made in 10 years. Gouge should have been there.
ReplyDeleteI think Auburn being his dream job is the truth and probably what separated him from some other candidates, such as Gill.
ReplyDeleteBarkley demonstrating his racist philosophy won't change that.
so are other SEC coaches doing negative recruiting against AU by saying to someone on ESPN that Gill wouldn't be hired bec. of his white wife?
ReplyDeleteAnd F-bum is going to run it into the ground.
Steve, one day you're going to have Jay change the name of this blog to The Sunniest Auburn Blog on The Net.
ReplyDeleteMon-
ReplyDeletewhere did you hear that Gill spoke to Sir Charles?
My university will be stuck in this incestuous, embarrassing cycle until the Dye, Lowder, Rane & Co. Mafia is gone.
ReplyDeleteespn
ReplyDeleteBammers calling us racist is a joke. They've never had a black QB start for a whole season much less a black HC.
ReplyDeletenot sunniest, barkley, delusional
ReplyDeleteMonica, you are right about Lowder, Rane, and Dye, but it isn't because of what they are doing now. It is because of the perception, and that isn't likely to ever change.
ReplyDeleteBarkley for governor, where did you get your information on Lowder and Dye being against Gill?
Might be the Prez's way of protesting the hire as well.
ReplyDeleteI never really viewed Charles Barkley as a racist until today. Has anyone actually heard exactly what he said? Is that information accurate?
ReplyDeleteA better way to protest it would be to quit. I'm not going to be pres of a place where the bot dictates the hiring of my staff. That's just me.
ReplyDeleteAUant, the president met with Chizik in Memphis. Any time Auburn is committing to a multi-million dollar salary, I would expect the president to be involved.
ReplyDeleteshow me one other PC where the President did not appear when the head football coach of an SEC has been announced. 1.
ReplyDeleteSeriously.
They probably had to call him and tell him that Lowder had hired someone.
Monica, where did you learn about the BOT dictating the hirings?
ReplyDeleteextremely accurate. Barkely is truly worried that His Auburn is racist.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, instead of going through channels to voice his displeasure, he uses ESPN.
Mark, Gogue met with Chizik in Memphis. That would appear to mean he was aware of the hire.
ReplyDeletehmmm I think I liked Dan Mullen's introduction better, it was more exciting for sure.
ReplyDeleteMark, Barkley has always been kind of politically incorrect. The problem is, I haven't seen anything to indicate why he would think this had something to do with race other than a black coach didn't get hired.
ReplyDeletesarcasm is a funny word. So is it's application.
ReplyDeleteSorry all...but I believe Charles is right!!!
ReplyDeleteAUant, what makes you believe it had something to do with race?
ReplyDeleteWhat a freakin PR nightmare. Not to mention just the wrong coaching hire. Sad and disgusting.
ReplyDeleteHere's the barkley quote:
ReplyDelete"I think race was the No. 1 factor," said Barkley, who played basketball for three seasons at Auburn during the early 1980s. "You can say it's not about race, but you can't compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume."
Here's the link to the article on ESPN.com.
I don't think this was a racist hire. I think Charles does. That is why he should have voiced his concerns to the President, instead of announcing it on ESPN.
ReplyDeleteHe may well be right; but, there are better ways to treat your University.
Monica, what is making you think it is the wrong coaching hire?
ReplyDeleteIs anybody else listening to f-bum? the fallout is BAD, BAD, BAD.
ReplyDeleteBarkley is right, AUant. I'm probably the only one here to agree with you, but that doesn't make us wrong.
ReplyDeleteWell PR disaster aside, if we end up winning some games next year, I'll be a happy guy. I'd rather have that than have a media darling come in here and stink it up. Let's go get some coaches and some players and get ready to play some football, I'm stoked!
ReplyDeleteThe better question is...What makes you believe it is not? I'm not saying Turner Gill was the best coach out there..however, of the ones that more or less would have accepted the job..based on what has been done on the field as a head coach you can't tell me that Chizik was more accomplished as a head coach.
ReplyDeleteI think 80% of the fanbase either believes it is the wrong hire or has serious doubts. 30% of the 80% probably are in wait and see mode; but, they still have serious doubts.
ReplyDeleteI would say 10% believe it is good.
9% would support Auburn no matter what.
1% loves Auburn football and is sure he is the right guy. Oh, make that 1 person, not one percent.
Can someone do some homework and find out what meeting Gouge had to be at today?
ReplyDeleteWhat if Gill was a bad interview? And Chizik was a better interview?
ReplyDeleteI am certain it had ZERO to do about race and I am extremely disappointed that Barkley chooses to embarrass himself and Auburn with his comments.
ReplyDeleteI won't know for a year whether or not Chizik was the "right guy." If he wasn't, it would be because of very poor judgement and incompetence, not race.
What did Charles say that wasn't true?
ReplyDeleteGuys and gals I fully believe all the negative press we are getting on this hire is going to have a probation like effect on Auburn.
ReplyDeleteNegative Press....negative press, you wanna talk about negative press...I just want to win a game!
ReplyDeleteI am deeply disappointed to learn that Charles Barkley is such a racist. I really never knew.
ReplyDeleteHe even points out in the article why it wasn't a racist hire, namely because he felt Chizik's resume was the worst of all. That is truly sad.
It is people like Charles Barkley that continually damage the reputation of black head coachs by suggesting they should be hired based upon their skin color. How sad.
Here's the fact, neither Gill nor Chizik has coached a game at Auburn yet. Relax. Charles is a windbag, but because he can play basketball and he's loud, he's almost always jumped at by the national media as the "Auburn spokesman". I would rather know what Bo has to say, because he actually PLAYED FOOTBALL at AU.
ReplyDeletebarkley for gov.-
ReplyDeletehow about this:
"I think race was the No. 1 factor," said Barkley,
I think he is wrong. I wanted Turner Gill more than Barkley.
Gonna be hard to win games when you have a hard time recruiting guys to play for you because of all the negative press.
ReplyDeleteKlaus - Unless the alleged meeting was life or death he should have been at the presser. Period.
ReplyDeleteYou do not think that fbaum was going to give AU a fair shake do you?
ReplyDeleteGill did not get the job because:
1. No ties to the southeast. you don't give a guy 3 years to build relationships with HS coaches at a major program.
2. His ties to Nebraska. If he was successful and they wanted him he would have been gone. (i would not blame him)
Believe him or not Chizzle seems like he wants to be in AU. BTW I think Willis has a white wife (not that that matters)
Just my opinion, but I think it's WAY too early to think that it will result in "probation like effect". A solid staff with good credentials and an ability to recruit in the SEC will fix that. Did anyone expect fbum, or anyone else for that matter, to have nice things to say about ANY hire we made?
ReplyDeleteAnd no, Gouge should not have been at the presser. He's the president of an ACADEMIC INSTITUTION. Jacobs has a job, and that is to run athletics. Let him do his job, even though he's bad at it.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter if we win the NC next year. The fact remains the Mafia needs to go.
ReplyDeleteHe said he THINKS race is the No. 1 factor. That's his opinion, and he certainly isn't alone.
ReplyDeleteSo the bottom line is that Auburn should have hired Gill---regardless, because it would have been good PR?
ReplyDeleteJust Win AU, I agree. Something similar happened to Auburn around 1970 that set the stage for Bryant to be successful.
ReplyDeleteAuburn had the first black football players on a major sports team in Alabama. Around 1970 coach Jordan told them they had to cut their hair and shave or they were off the team.
Somehow that got transformed into a racist action and Auburn recruiting suffered for years because of it.
This could end up having the same effect. The truth doesn't matter when public opinion comes into play, as evidenced by all the people on here making statements about what Lowder and Dye did with respect to this hire with no facts to back it up. Truth doesn't matter. Just perceptions.
Well, JustWin, we'll have to hope they don't listen to the negative press...
ReplyDeleteyes, some of our former coaches had white wives, some had black wives. Going forward, it's obviously best if we hire coaches who aren't married.
ReplyDeleteIf Gill had bolted to Nebraska, then that to me would mean that he was doing a "GREAT" job at Auburn. That is unless they have Ath Dir that goes out and hires a guy with a losing record.
ReplyDeleteGouge most certainly should have been at the presser. For many reasons. The CEO must be at first, and most public presentation of the biggest hire made by the company in 10 years.
ReplyDeleteThat's like trying to find a doctor with good penmanship, TarHeel
ReplyDeleteBottom line, no one knows why Gill didnt get the job except for the few clowns running the search. Everything else is speculation. It's not good for PR, but we are only 1 of 115 D-1 schools without a black HC. I dont think a recruit will think we are any more racist than any other school in the SEC.
ReplyDeleteOh well. Damage done. More years of trying to defend the indefensible.
ReplyDeleteKJtiger, very well put. I believe that is exactly why Gill didn't get the job. If he had been very successful he wouldn't have been the right hire because he would have bolted to Nebraska. If he wasn't successful, then it is the same thing. It was a no win situation.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I don't think Chizik was the first choice. My guess is that Muschamp was.
Methinks you might be right, Steve
ReplyDeleteI think UT, MSU, Syracuse, Washington etc are all racist too. MSU is double racist.
ReplyDeleteSee how easy that was?
ReplyDeleteI havent really been following the Gill situation since Saturday.
ReplyDeleteHas he said publicly that he was not offered the job? Are we sure he wasnt offered the job and then turned it down?
Just heard that 680 in ATL is reporting that Garner is resigning from UGA...don't know if it's true at all, but I sure hope so, if that means he's coming back to AU.

ReplyDeleteNot trying to get into an argument here, but Auburn is not a company. It's a university. If he was at a meeting that could get us a research grant, that's more important for him to be at because it helps the education at the college, and thus all of our degrees become that much more valuable. Unfortunately, as much as I hate to say it, football success doesn't matter when it comes to getting a job in the real world. Your education does.
good point. Gill possibly being hired away would have been confirmation, that he was the best hire. That, or like Vince before him, he could have told his alma mater that he had a new home.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Standing Brad. Auburn is an Institution of Higher Learning that has a football team. Not a football team who built some buildings to educate athletes only.
