Malzahn not leaving Tulsa immediately

Here are a few items discussed in the comments section that probably need front-page status:
  • Gus Malzahn, hired Sunday as the Tigers' new offensive coordinator, will stick with his current employer (University of Tulsa) until the conclusion of its Jan. 6 bowl game.

  • Malzahn will be in Auburn on Monday. He'll be meeting with Chizik and The Peeps. He'll also huddle with the media at some point.

  • Malzahn will coach quarterbacks. There was some confusion here because he coached receivers at Tulsa. Auburn still is in the market for a receivers coach.

  • Tulsa head coach Todd Graham had this to say about Malzahn's situation:
“We wish Gus much success at Auburn and it is with mixed emotions that we send him off,” Graham said. “He has done an outstanding job for us. I know it was a tough decision for him to leave Tulsa, but we wish him nothing but the best in his new position.” (Tulsa World)

Bet it wasn't that tough to turn down the SEC. Auburn, even a mediocre one, is a quicker step to a a respectable HC job than Tulsa.

Not sure on his timetable, but he's probably got one. The only place you see career coordinators is in the NFL for the most part.

  11. The New York Yankees should pay close attention to what is going on with the Dallas Cowboys right now.

You can put all the talent on the world on one team, if the chemistry isn't there, you got nothin.

I'll just keep laughing at them as they dish out billions of dollars to miss the playoffs.

Dallas does have stars but no chemistry as others have noted.

They also lack leadership in the HC and GM/Football Ops. positions.

Dallas is a lot closer to being the Raiders than the Patriots.

  23. This game Cowboys showing against the Eagles was the worst showing I can ever remember of team playing with something on the line. I think that this should go down as one on the biggest choke jobs all times

  25. It will be something they can tell their grandkids about...

Wonder if they will get together each year to toast one another after the last winless team manages to win a game that season?

  26. From Charles Goldberg's blog: Georgia d-line coach Rodney Garner - "The only thing we're focusing on is Michigan St" when asked if he is talking to AU about an assistant position. I like that answer. I only hope Jet has made it to the Garner front yard to start his sit-in protest/stalking to bring him back to AU.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jay-G,

It takes some work to be 0-16. Oddly enough they didn't look THAT bad every game. It's like little league baseball, when one team really sucks every other coach capitalizes on it and they beat the mess out of them.
The only difference is these guys are getting paid big $$.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If Malzahn didn't have Mustain as his high school QB he probably would still be coaching high school football right now.

    Does that bother anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Maybe TO should have focused less on his bromance and jealousy issues with Romo & Co. I could be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Is this years Detroit Lions team the worst professional franchise ever fielded?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Has Jet gone a Garner sit-in protest?? Like that guy in Wetumpka who climbed his radio tower to protest his association fees. I think it was $150 annually.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It does worry me a bit Barkley, however the fact that the year he was at ARKY his offense led their team to the SEC-CG makes me feel better.

    ReplyDelete
  33. depressed, that's actually from the AJC.

  34. Has anyone heard about this Charter/Fox thing in Montgomery? Someone was telling me today that Fox (WCOV) will no longer be carried in Montgomery after the first on Charter cable. If so this sucks because American Idol is about to get started again. Not to mention a little thing called the BCS.

    ReplyDelete
  35. that doesn't bother me. apparently it doesn't bother the NCAA statisticians either.

    ReplyDelete
  36. that was to barkley

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sorry, Jay. I read it it on Goldberg's blog.Do you want me to change it?

  39. JD,
all contract negotiations. They will work it out!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Barkley - He's already been a successful college coach so that is not even a moot point, it's a moot speculation.

    Moot = Monica not bothered

    ReplyDelete
  41. you think mdaniel...

    ReplyDelete
  42. mdaniel- yes, jet will be the man flying Bama heads out his windows instead of AU flags. You can't miss him on the way to Athens.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Tony Franklin had been successful as a college coach too...

    ReplyDelete
  44. OK, just curious, why would anyone on this sight name themselves BFG.
After all Mr. Barkley has has to say about the racist tactics at AU I don't get it.
If I'm missing something please let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I just read on the ESPN bottom line that Favre was called in front of the team and grilled for making bad throws. It also said he did not like playing for Mangini. Anyone else see that?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Barkley - You find as many reasons to be bothered as you like. I'm not.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anyone else notice Jimmy Sexton in Jerry Jones box tonight? Wonder what that's about?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I didn't see that, but I did she Favre turn in an awful performance. Chad had a lovely reunion with the Jets.

    ReplyDelete
  49. mdaniel, my HABOTN handle has been barkley for governor long before he made any "racist statements." The reason for that is because I like Charles Barkley, not that I would actually vote for him if he ran for governor.

Although I don't always agree with what he says, I like the fact that he's real about it and he speaks his mind.

I could really care less whether you approve or not.

Just for your info, I don't recall saying whether I approved or Not. I simply asked a question.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Mon, I'm not bothered, I was just asking if it bothered anyone else.

I really wasn't going to be excited or disappointed with the hire, because I got excited over Franklin and learned my lesson. I'm just ready to see how it plays out, I hope he is a good recruiter.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I totally agree, Barkley. I just want to win and not get arrested. :-)

  59. As a part of our new program where every staff member must have a Z in their name, linebackers coach James Willis is now known as James Williz.

However, Rodney Garner has been given an accomodation. He will not have to have a Z in his name, but will in his title .... Azzistant Head Coach and Defenzive Coordinator.

Monnie, i was hoping THE CHIZ would snag somebody from one of those Oklahoma schools. one of my best buds is a huge OU fan so i keep an eye on them too. they just score so many points in that state. OSU does too. something is working out there. we needed to get in on that.

  69. From Charles Goldberg, Birmingham News: Reporters' Notebooks
    03:19 PM ET 12.28

Get The Picture: Just how bad did Gene Chizik want the Auburn job? He reportedly told Jay Jacobs that if he needed more money to help pay for assistant coaches, the athletic director could take $400,000 from the head coach's salary.

    ReplyDelete
  85. JD, my inside source just told me that the WCOV rumor is not a done deal. From what I understand, though, Charter is trying to be a bully, so it is a possibility that Charter subscribers won't have a fox affiliate come the first of the year (unless you subscribe to the HD package.they're keeping WCOV's HD signal. Knowledgy (or however you spell the other cable provider in the Gump) will have WCOV Fox 20 regardless of what Charter does, so you should probably switch providers if you want to see 24, American Idol, and the BCS, if Charter can't get their act together in the next day or so (an announcement is due for Tuesday). Otherwise, you can still get the HD or analog signal's via the air antenna....

    ReplyDelete
  86. McL,
Just read the article. Man, as much as I loved that guy I always thought he was too small for the NFL. I would bet his mindset is to tough it out and come back next year. The sad part is that his pro career if most likely over.

    ReplyDelete
  87. As a friend of mine says,"Holey Crap Batman".
Here I am sitting in the land of the mouse, Disney World, and I get the word on the OC. Wow his stats are great and I am pumped. Now if we can get a strong guy like Gardner.

  88. Cadillac got tackled from behind on a 28yd run and had to be helped from the field. He pounded the ground in frustration and pain. After his injury the entire bench appeared to have lost focus. Cadillac had about 17 touches for 115yds for the day. They are saying torn Petella tendon on the left knee. This is the same injury he had on the right knee last year. It will be very tuff to come back from.
"The patellar tendon connects the kneecap (the patella) to the shin bone. This is part of the 'extensor mechanism' of the knee, and together with the quadriceps muscle and the quadriceps tendon, these structures allow your knee to straighten out, and provide strength for this motion. The patellar tendon, like other tendons, is made of tough string-like bands. These bands are surrounded by a vascular tissue lining that provides nutrition to the tendon."

  91. Jet update ... I knocked on Rodney's hotel room, and he answered wearing a T-shirt that says "Guns don't kill people. Linemen do." He asked me nicely to leave.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Tendons don't like to be stretched beyond their limits. Unlike a rubber band, they don't like to snap back into place.

Re-creating that elasticity is tough business -- for surgeons and patients.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Jet, Did Rodney tell you it's either him or Searls, but not both. Heard they don't get along?

  101. Did anyone read the interview earlier this season w/ our new OC. He says he is a run first to set up the pass kind of guy. I'm good w/ that.

Anyone watching La Tech tonight. That porter kid, rb for La Tech, looks kinda of like the player I envision Onterio McCaleb (hopefully, a new signee for AU) to be. He's not a big guy, but now a midget either. Got some real speed I understand.

  108. Just got in and caught up on all the posts. Don't know if I am happy about Malzahn or not. I remember Al Borges said that he was not the "sexiest" hire Tubs could have made when he hired him, but he was the best. I wasn't sure what was sexy about any OC they could have picked, but I think I know what Big Al meant.

So I guess Malzahn, in this case, was the sexiest hire that Chizik could have made. Since Chizik sure as heck wasn't very sexy himself, maybe it was what he needed to do. This post is starting to sound pornographic.

The big question is whether or not his offense will work at AU. Mr. S seems to have his doubts; I've got no idea. But I don't see any reason that it shouldn't. In case nobody here has noticed, the sec just wasn't very good this year. I think the bowl results will prove that. The spread works in other conferences with teams that regularly beat sec teams, so I can't see why it won't work at an sec school.

It doesn't bother me that Malzahn would still be coaching HS if not for Mustain. The country is full of HS coaches who could be better than anybody coaching in college today; they just never got the chance to move up. A whole lot of our success in life in any area comes from simply being in the right place at the right time. Malzahn got his chance and has taken advantage of it - congrats to him for that. I already liked him - liked the way that he wouldn't put up with Nutt and left him, and liked the success he's had at Tulsa. Here's hoping he does a great job for AU.

    What a shame about Caddy.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Forgot to say - Good job of reporting, Jay. That summary is excellent and tells a lot about the Malzahn offense that I didn't know.

Jokingly says he's on the Clinton Durst program ... he's never played football, but wants to try out to kick (just kidding).

He's actually going to tryout for the drum line in the band.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Jet, I have been chasing beavers since I was 11 years old and it didn't take a youtube video to inspire it.

As for Malzahn, I am on board. I do hope Chizik will do the smart thing and give Malzahn control over the offensive staff. Any position coach that isn't on board with the plan, please clear out your office.

It is time for Auburn to catch some Zs. Now, throw some bucks Rodney Garner's way and I will be pretty happy. Offer him around $400k to be the DC.

As for Stacy Searles, offer him about $325k to coach the O-Line and dare him to turn it down.

Malzahn, it is time for you to go Cotton picking.

    ReplyDelete
  118. jet-that is a great plan. When I see a band member take Saban out on the sideline I'll know he made it.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Zteve ... love the new name.

My statement was a literary device, I assure you. I agree with you wholeheartedly regarding Rodney and Stacy and the offensive staff.

As for Cotton, I'll leave that to the Z Team's judgment. If he's the guy, go get him. If not, find us a winner.

    ReplyDelete
  120. When you see a drum stick impaled in Saban's forehead, there will be no need for a lengthy investigation.

    ReplyDelete
  121. People seem to feel we don't have any talent. In both 2006 and 2007 we had top 10 recruiting classes. Yea, 2008 was an off year, although I think there were some hidden gems in that class.

So far, this class is looking pretty bad. If Chizik can get guys like Cotton and Scott back in line and pick up a couple of other 4 star players, it wouldn't be too bad.

We just need to wait and see, but there is still the possibility of this being a good recruiting class, but we need some last minute recruits to fill out this class.

I am very encourage by Malzahn being hired. This past season we would have likely won at least 9 games if we had a mediocre offense. Unfortunately, mediocre wasn't even close. It would have taken light 10 years to get from mediocre to where our offense was. If Malzahn can get us to mediocre, we will be very competitive and be in the running for the SEC West.

    ReplyDelete
  122. ZteveFC, I know my depression in the state of the AU football program has been a concern to you. My dream hires were Malzahn, Searels and Garner. IF all three come to AU(and I can figure out how to do it) my new handle will be optimisticaufan. If you are a Shawshank fan, you are Andy to my Red and I now believe hope is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Depressed ... Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies.

Bad things die ... like Warden Norton.

"I'd like to that the last thing that went through Saban's mind ... other than the drum stick ... was to wonder how in the hell Auburn got the best of him."

    ReplyDelete
  124. jet- I love it. The next Daniel Moore print "Drum stick at Jordan-Hare."

    ReplyDelete
  125. Saban doesn't concern me. We beat him at LSU. We have beat him at Bama. We will beat him in the future. No matter how hard he tries, Saban will always come up a little short.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Good night, War EAgle.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Hello, Hotties!

It seems that the doom and gloom days in Auburn are brightening once again. I really wanted an offensive minded HC this time around and was a little disappointed on the Chizik decision for that reason. However, let's be honest for a second...a HC is only as good as the coaches/assistants in which surrounds himself. I believe that this was main downfall of the TT era. Now is the time when AU can re-establish themselves and bring a new and improved energy to the program. So far, it seems that Coach Chizik has been on the right track to make that happen, but time will only tell if Coach & Co. can get it done.

I hope you all had a great Christmas. Happy New Year and WDE!

    ReplyDelete
  128. we will beat them on the beaches. we will beat them with drumsticks. we will beat them with the latest in laser technologly. we will beat them with the tired, yet devoted, spirits of our great grand parents. we will beat them. wde.

  129. OK, so its been a weird day. I spent it with my pops at a hockey game, then went and watched my beloved Broncos get kicked in the teeth, then come home to find out that Auburn did something so competent and logical that I nearly lost all control of my bowels. Just an amazing cornicopia of feelings today.

Anyway, if you can't tell, I love the hire. I've seen Tulsa play a few times this year, and they are explosive. It can work in the SEC (see Troy constantly putting up huge numbers on SEC defenses for proof). I'm officially giddy. If we get Garner, I'll make naked snow angels when I get back up North in a few days.

As for now, its bedtime with thoughts of AU basketball tomorrow night in my head. Can't wait to get back on campus for an evening!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Brad-
Where you succeeded in maintaining control of bodily functions, I have failed. But I believe it was a side effect of the medicine I'm taking rather than giddiness over the Malzahn hire. After this past year's disaster, I am adhering to a strict NO PDG (public display of giddiness) policy.

  131. Good morning Hotties!
Time to rise and shine. I'll be stuck at a work site today which blocks access to HABOTN :-( so I'll see y'all this evening.

    WAR EAGLE!!!!

  132. With GUS and The Spread this will answer the question that has been in the back of many minds.

Was it the Spread (franklin) or was it the Assistants (BBQ Boys) that caused the demise of our O....

    Time will tell the tale...

  135. Jet, as a former member of the AU drumline, I wish nothing but the best for Turbo Prop. And let him know there will be plenty of opportunities to take his Sabanness out when lining up for pregame. Less security around, too.

    ReplyDelete
  136. There was an earlier comment about finding out whether Franklin couldn't coach or teach his system, or if the problem was with the Q crew. I want to be optimistic about all this, and it feels like a step in the right direction, but I was giddy like Tarheel last year, so I'll be cautiously optimistic. I think if Jay's vids of practice next summer show the guys at full speed, with the quarterbacks throwing and not doing that little steppy thing, I'll start to feel better.

  137. Nice. Flippin. Hire. This may help recruiting on both sides of the ball. Hopefully we'll get Garner on board, Tracy Rocker would be cool too, he was at livingston for a stint while i was there and shot the bull with him a bit working with the AD and SID, nice fella. WAR EAGLE!

  141. I along with most Auburn fans love this hire. My only question is was last years receivers not very good talent wise or were they not coached very well. If it was coaching that can be fixed, if it is talent that will take a year or two. Are we in the running for any big time receivers.

  142. My "Operation Rodney" is working well ... went to character breakfast this morning with the Garner family disguised as Goofy.

Hope the offense doesn't take another Zzzzzz this season.

  144. Anonymous8:57 AM

Maybe the defense will once again blitzzzzzzz

    ReplyDelete
  145. I am pretty pumped with the hire. I think this is a huge move. The question still is the talent level at WR. If they are so bad then we should now be able to recruit top freshman receivers into this class. With the promise of immediate playing time should draw some top receivers. Thinks are looking up.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Our WR have talent. Slaughter, Hawthorne, and Billings were all four star recruits out of high school if my memory is correct. They obviously have SOME talent.

It appears to be poor coaching.

    ReplyDelete
  147. tigerfan44, if I am not mistaken AU currently has 3 WR commitments, but honestly, they were not being offered by most of the top SEC teams. Whether that means anything or not, I don't really know. Poor QB play has also not allowed our current WR's the opportunity to truly show what thay can or can't do. The combination of poor QB play and Knoxs reportedly poor coaching really makes it hard to tell where the problem really is. One thing is for sure- AU needs to step up recruiting in offensive skill positions, and good QB and WR coaching are desperately needed.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I guess what I am saying is that if we recruit a top tier receiver it might wake these guys up. They didn't just get bad overnight. Sometimes up got to shake things up a little to get the guys woke up.

    ReplyDelete
  149. jet= dog the bounty hunter. His next move is to have "I love Rodney" tatoos branded on the whole jet family.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Did Malzahn coach Matt Jonez when he was at Arkanzas? I'm not sure that I'm impressed with Mustain at the college level. Actually I haven't really heard much of him since he transferred to USC.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Disciplined route running will will help immensely. We quite possibly had the worse route technique in the SEZZZZZZZZZZZZ. I am lookin forward to more blitzzzzzzzzzz.

    ReplyDelete
  152. depressed if receivers that are on team now have a good year we will know it was coaching. You made good point about QB not giving them a chance to shine.

    ReplyDelete
  153. TB, that's correct, they didnt get bad overnight. They had talent in high school, and for whatever reason they have never been able to harness it at Auburn. One would think it is either coaching or a HUGE coincidence that every year for the last four years our WR have underwhelmed.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I can agree on the coaching issue, but they didn't get dumb overnight. If they were talented in high school there talent should still be there. If you bring in a hot shot receiver that would stir things up.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Well. I am impressed by the hire.

But then again...I like Tony Franklin also.

This should be interesting at least, especially with a coaching staff that is bought into running this offense.

By the way, it sucks to be at work again, but I'm very thankful for the job.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Route running is repition and discipline. Poor coaching effects the two. From watching our wr's they've had little of both for quite a while. How bout some blocking downfield, too?

    ReplyDelete
  157. Later guys. I'm goin to State College for my marriage license and a lil partay for the next day or two. Hopefully i'll have some access from Mexico to check out the other hires, if not i'll be seein yall round jan 10th take care.

  161. Gee Mustain looking to leave SC. Can't imagine that he really thought he could walk in and start getting playing time.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Mustain is a RS Sophomore at this time. If he transferred...again, it would be with one year left to play. What is Sanchez right now?

Also, is Jay trying to hint of a move from USC to Auburn?

    Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Morning Hot Onez!

Another beautiful day here on the Plainz! This coaching hire is pretty exciting. Hopefully it will help us sign Pat Patterson at WR. He is set to visit either this weekend or next.

Az for our WRz, they have talent but need some strong coaching. They were getting open more towardz the end of the season thou. QB play will be the key. If Kodi can continue to make strides we should be ok. It would be great to get Cotton back. He has alot of talent and he seems like a natural leader. Beaver is more accurate but either would be fine imo.

DC becomes a huge deal now. It's great to be able to score but we gotta stop the other guys from scoring. Chiz seems to be on the right track.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Jay will you be at the A&M game tonight?

    Is Malzahn in Auburn already?

    ReplyDelete
  165. Malzahn is in Auburn as we speak.

I will be at Beard-Eaves. My football work may preclude me from live blogging the game.

    I'm guessing you'd prefer Malzahn/Chizik chatter ...

    ReplyDelete
  166. That's why we consider you a mangenius Gilligan.

    Anyone else watching ESPN Classic?

80 Rose Bowl with NBC coverage. Interesting that its Emberg, that HoF DE guy who played for the Rams and did those Flower commercials and OJ -- yep, Oj Simpson.

Kind of cool to see the offenses played in those days compared to what AU will put on the field this year.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Jay actually I'm down for either but yea Chizik/Malzahn chatter would be more entertaining. I was thinking about going to the bball game. I'll look for you if I do.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Damn, Art Schleester has a cannon!

What ever became of this fine young man from Columbus?

    ReplyDelete
  169. Merlin Olsen -- that got rid of a gray cell or two

  170. Jay G (or anyone)-

whats the story with Clint Moseley? Are we pursuing him hard? why aren't other big programs out there looking at him? He is Mr Football in AL, smart, good build and has proven that he is winner.

is it b/c he comes from a small school? just wondering. if i was CGC i would make sure he is committed today!

    ReplyDelete
  171. Why would Mrs. Coach Malzahn and his two daughters be at a USC football game wearing USC Trojans gear?

    ReplyDelete
  172. Clint Moseley currently does not have an offer from us but there have been some talks between him and The Chiz. I assume that will be a decision left up to Malzahn. Cotton and Beaver would surely be higher on our board though.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Monica's not one to spread rumorz

    ReplyDelete
  174. ya, i understand that Cotton is higher up there but it wouldn't hurt to go after him hard, would it?

    ReplyDelete
  175. Monz,
I bet that restraining order has been filed and in tact in anticipation of the press conference today!

    Viva Le Malzahn!

    ReplyDelete
  176. Chizik was seen wearing Iowa State gear this year. Some king of Auburn Man, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  177. I haven't seen the details for the press conference, but I assume it's coming up shortly (unless I already missed it). Today is my one day in the office, so I'm actually trying to get a little work done.

I do like the comments posted at Tulsa World, except for the 6th comment, which looks to be posted by a bammer (or other sour-grapes inclined individual).

I'm also glad to see Coach Williz back in the fold (along with Lolleyz and Yoxzall).

    ReplyDelete
  178. I don't think there will be a restraining order.

Anyway, there is a photo of her and her two gorgeous daughters wearing USC gear. It was taken 11/8/2008.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Doug - When you get your knickers twisted like you just did with Josh your voice goes up like Jack's on "Will and Grace".

Sorry, the bama bowl game is a lamer. Not hatin', just statin'.

Any other hot D coordinators out there?

    ReplyDelete
  181. Jay,

Is there going to be a press conference or something today?

I'd like to hear Malz and Chiz field some questions from the media.

    ReplyDelete
  182. OK, the photo is of the USC/Cal game and there is one taken inside the stadium during the game. So, I'm just curious why Mrs. Malzahn and family was at the USC/Cal game decked out in USC gear. Was in in support of Mustain? I have no idea. I'm just asking the hotties.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Monica ... Kristi assures me that they are complete Auburn fanZ now.

Also hearing about a significant problem for UAT vs. Utah. Hmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Anonymous12:39 PM

    what kind of problem, Jet?

    ReplyDelete
  185. I know she's very excited about coming to Auburn. I'm just curious about the USC thing.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Monica- My guess would be in support of Mitch Mustain and Damain Williams, whom he was their High School coach and with both of them their first year at Arkansas.

    That is the logical reason.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Yeah, that's a long way to go to support your former player. Hmmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  188. Michael ... Rodney is available. I just bought his kids the Mickey Mouse ears-shaped Eskimo Pies. Operation Rodney continues.
