If it seems like this story repeats itself, well, that's not an illusion. Auburn has ranked in the bottom half of the NCAA in free-throw shooting for six consecutive seasons.
- Auburn (hitting 59.2% from the line) currently is ranked 324 out of 330 D-I teams.
- SEC average is 68.9%.
- Auburn has only three players above the SEC average ... and they're not the guys who draw fouls.
- Tay Waller 28-35 (80%)
- Rasheem Barrett 14-19 (73.7%)
- Frankie Sullivan 21-29 (72.4%)
- Tay Waller 28-35 (80%)
- Those three guys together have taken only a few more free throws than Korvotney Barber, who is 34-of-77 (44.2%) this season. Add in Tez Robertson's 37-of-63 (58.7%) performance ... and you can see why the Tigers are a mess overall.
- Still, Barber is not the SEC's weakest free-throw shooter. Among players who have attempted at least 20 free throws, Florida's Kenny Kadji (10-23, 43.5%) and Georgia guard Zac Swansey (9-24, 37.5%) are performing at an even lower level.
Might one of these numbers be... 1?
ReplyDeleteI just saw that Jon Gruden was fired in Tampa. I wonder if Tennessee was ever really interested in him for head coach.

ReplyDeleteAh, Auburn free-throw shooting woes; I've just come to accept that Auburn will never be even a consistently average free-throw shooting team. Going back at least ten years, I feel Auburn's terrible free throw-shooting has cost them at least 3-5 games a season. We'll just never be good from the charity stripe.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or is Mr. Jay Gee Tate taking quite awhile uncovering these statistics? They must be covered quite well.
ReplyDeleteUp now.
ReplyDeleteIs there something in the air or water or grass at Auburn that makes activities requiring precision projectile tossing, such as passing a football accurately or making a free throw, nearly impossible? If so, why hasn't someone distributed the antidote that negates this effect? Clearly, visiting teams have already gotten their hands on it.
ReplyDeleteThis is, without a doubt, the weirdest Auburn trend ever.
ReplyDeleteDifferent coaches, different players, same awful FT shooting. I don't get it. Can't get it. Can't be gotten.
Well, at least there is always the football team. Wait... awww crap.
ReplyDeleteLebo can probably out-shoot every player on his team. That has to drive him crazy on the free-throws.
ReplyDelete10 Rodney Crayton James Joseph Tommy Traylor
ReplyDeletesomebody please verify
depressedAU-
ReplyDeletenow I'm definitely going to join your club. you took my "10" ;-)
too bad we can't have a student FT shooter like Texas Tech had an extra point kicker.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that TarHeel. No way to treat the newest member of the depressed family.
ReplyDeleteI am going to lobby for the "designated free throw shooter" at the next NCAA rules committee meeting.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great idea, Phred.
ReplyDeleteCap the designated FT shooter at 10 per game. That way it's fair.
Yea, that's it. 10 "free throw substitions" per game. When super sucky gets fouled, insert the DFTS.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe we could make it like coach pitch little league baseball. When you get fouled, the coach shoots it for you.
ReplyDeleteFrom reading the recruiting info on Rivals, it would appear to me that there is a fine line between aggressive recruiting and desperate crys for help.
ReplyDeletePhred-
ReplyDeletewould it be safe to assume we've crossed that line?
I think maybe so.
ReplyDeleteIs Auburn kinda like Napoleon Dynamite asking out that popular chick? I mean, bravo, that took guts, but what an idiot. The mom felt sorry so the chick had to go with Napoleon. Maybe a parent of a 5 star recruit will feel sorry for Auburn and make the kid go there.
ReplyDelete(how is that for a current reference?_
I think we should break down and just start paying people.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's desperate cries for help. I think it's aggressive. I'd rather have a no or even a no show than not ask at all.
ReplyDeleteI am all for that. I got about 30 bucks in my wallet. What do you got?
ReplyDeleteI'm in for 50. What about you Mrs. Positve Spin?
ReplyDeleteI SAID ... there is a fine line between the two.
ReplyDeleteThere is also a fine line between paying a recruit 30 dollars and 31 dollars, and I don't plan on crossing it. Well, I guess it is relatively fine, but there aare numerous options between 30 and 31 depending on whatever my loose change situation might be. But you know.
ReplyDeleteGeez you're awfully testy lately.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little jumpy. I'll admit it. It's jumpy season.
ReplyDeleteNo sudden moves or loud noises around Phred tonight. The man is jumpy, and I don't blame him.
ReplyDeleteAnd I wouldn't classify the recruiting top prospects as a cry for help. It is either aggressive and forward thinking or it is delusional and a waste of time that will keep us from getting recruits we could actually land. Time will tell. But I like it, might as well.
I am JWTiger.
ReplyDeleteJay,
Is it possible to figure how many games Auburn could have won over the last six seasons had they been able to convert... say 15% more free throws?
I honestly do not follow AU Basketball for one reason...AUBURN CAN NOT MAKE F...ING FREE THROWS. I do not understand how Lebo can allow this simple discipline to go so bad.
I have supported Lebo.He seems like a good coach, but pleeeeeeeeze... the foul shoting is comical!
I was all giddy when they went after those big names. However, reality seems to have been re-established and I just don't see us getting the "5*" until AU proves it is once again an elite program (i.e. 2004; Dye 80s)
ReplyDeleteI've got $6, but ain't no recruit gonna get a penny of it.
Shooting for the stars is a success ... even when you hit 10%.
ReplyDeleteI said from the beginning that Chizik will land two guys he shouldn't get.
I'm standing by that.
Did anybody get my point except for me?
ReplyDeleteTarHeel, that is the catch-22 in a nutshell. To be an elite program, you have to have top recruits. To get top recruits, you have to be an elite program. I hope Chizik and Co. can show enough promise on the field in '09 to convince recruits this can be an elite program. I think it is a tough sell this year, coming in as late as they did. Next year is what I will be watching to see if this staff can stop the recent downward trend in AU recruiting. They have to turn recruiting around to turn the program around on the field. Or I could be totally wrong.
ReplyDeleteJGT - agreed, I think the new guys will definitely get someone no one expects them to get. If they don't even try, they'll fail 100% with the current state of the program. If they do try maybe they only get 20%, but I'll take those numbers in this scenario.
ReplyDeleteJay GT-
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you're right. I'm just not sure I see where they are coming from. Unless by "shouldn't get" you mean a couple of 1* or 2* that he shouldn't have even offered.
there was a point?
ReplyDelete39 - I can't think of anyone; I need a little help
ReplyDeleteI am SO slow.
ReplyDeleteI felt ya phred. You know, fine line and stuff.
ReplyDeletePhred ...
ReplyDeleteWhen I read your posts tonight, I think of the scene in Airplane! where the woman freaks out and someone slaps her, then Dr. Rumack shakes her and slaps, then everyone on board the plane is lined up with guns, sticks, and knives.
Shake yourself out of it, man!
I can't say I'm a sunshiny kind a guy, but we can get this done.
Yes pointy head, there was a point. But, apparently no one picked it up and assumed that I am being negative.
ReplyDeleteI was just saying that there is a fine line between aggressive recruiting and desperate recruiting. I hope that we are smooth enough, to manipulate the media enough, to make sure that it appears aggressive and not desperate. This is important.
Let the record show that I never called Phred negative and actively tried to help him pay off recruits.
ReplyDeleteSo how about the BC situation?
ReplyDeleteWhat's the pot up to now?
ReplyDeleteSee you boys and girls. I'm outie for the weekend. It's time for puzzles, thomas, books, crayons, wagons, tricycles, and little footballs.
BC! I love that strip.
ReplyDeleteIt's so cold here I'm snuggling with a heating pad.
ReplyDeleteBC? that's ACC; irrelevant unless we're talking b-ball. They're looking for an ass't or two just like us.
ReplyDeleteTar - I think you've overdosed on chocolate syrup or something. You're a grumpy gus, too. Snap out of it!
ReplyDeleteI'm down for a contribution to the following funds:
ReplyDeleteThe Obomanu-Aromashodu Chair in the School of Wide Receivery.
College of Hole Opening, Passer Protection and Snaps (CHOPPS)
I wish I could have been in SLC for the big Utes parade today. It would have been nice to thank those players in person for the woodshed beating they gave UA-T
ReplyDeleteJet, I like CHOPPS. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteSchool of Wide Receivery? Isn't that in the College of Veterinary Medicine?
ReplyDeleteMonica- I'm happy as a clam. Just not feeling optimistic about recruiting or the 2009 season. (I'm hoping my reverse psychology will pay huge dividends)
ReplyDeleteTar - Are Monk and Natalie going to hook up????????
ReplyDeleteHey guys I am sorry. I have been out of it for a while. We have has a major family illness and it has preoccupied much of my time so I haven't had much time to post or call 740. I had a friend tell me at dinner tonight that Jay was going to host a show on WMSP with Rick Hendrick. Is there any truth to this?
ReplyDeleteBiscuitator ...
ReplyDeleteThe Jay G portion of that would be awesome ... Rick, not so sure.
Oh CRAP!!! I forgot I was missing Monk because I'm at ()*^&*(^) work.
ReplyDeleteNatalie certainly cares a lot for him, but it never has seemed to be in an amorous way. They'd really have to do some creative writing to pull that off. I'll be pissed if they don't let Monk solve his wife's murder when they end the series. Once he does that, maybe he can fall in love.
Ha. Has there been any discussion on the HABOTN regarding this?
ReplyDeletegive jgt the afternoon slot. get that bald birmingham butthead off of my airwaves. well, not airwaves exactly since i'm streaming the show, but you know what i mean.
ReplyDeletejgt is perfect for the radio. at least from what he's exhibited so far, he's been a natural.
Thank goodness they replay Monk at midnight. I'll be home by then unless disaster strikes. I can watch it while eating a bowl of cereal and a bowl of ice cream while propped up in bed with Molly staring at the bowl. (She always wants some of mine even though she gets her own bowl of ice cream).
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the "official visitors" aren't watching Monk right now. WOnder if any of them have had a positive Auburn epiphany.
ReplyDeleteGatiger ... I agree ... but I would presume we are the minority opinion of such.
ReplyDeleteTar - Is Monk ending soon?
ReplyDeleteI want to see "Taken".
ReplyDeleteThere hasn't been anything official discussed between me and WMSP. They have some contractual obligations to ESPN (ie air a certain amount of ESPN programming) that probably would make a local, late-morning show impossible.
ReplyDeleteAs for ESPN, I have no comment.
Jay G. nothing official? Does that mean some stuff off the record?
ReplyDeletejgt would probably have a struggle building an audience outside of the members of this group. i'd think he'd be pegged an au homer even more than that bald birmingham butthead is a uat homer. i'm just sayin' is all.
ReplyDeletei mean this is all purely hypothetical anyway since jgt quickly dispels any such rumor mongering with his pointed comments on the topic.
JD ... nothing going on there at all, mane.
ReplyDeleteWow! I slip out for an evening with the Mrs and I miss a LOT on the HABOTN! It just took me almost an hour to get caught up.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if I remember it all.
Congrats to E-Gran! He's a great person and I wish him and his family all the best at UTk.
Sucks about Benton, I was really hoping we had a chance... once again, shot down cold.
How does one explain to the court that the defense of a racial slur has caused a rift in their sex life? Did she enjoy being called a dirty, nappy headed ho ($1 to Don Imus) and now AK refuses to say it, because it could be misconstrued as racially charged?
There is no excuse for a team (a WHOLE DANG TEAM) shooting less than 70% from the charity stripe. The SEC avg may be 68.9%, but it is AU that brings that avg down. Pathetic, and Lebo should lose his job on this stat alone.
So... what else did I miss?
Maybe I misunderstood the rumor and it was actually that JGT and RH would be taking over Colin Cowherd's show on the national level...
ReplyDeleteIs that your "pine box" comment, JGTuberville?
ReplyDeleteMonica-
ReplyDeleteUSA has renewed the series for an eighth season of 16 episodes but those will end the series. With the show’s viewership still growing, why finish it now? The decision to end the series is said to be a mutual one between all parties invloved. Though they maintain that they want to end Monk while the show is still on top creatively, the reason for the cancellation comes down to dollars and cents. As the seasons have progressed, production costs have increased and the network likely finds it hard to justify episodes’ high pricetags.
USA’s Executive VP of Original Programming, Jeff Wachtel, assures that viewers won’t be disappointed by the final episodes. In a statement, he said, “Our fans have been extremely dedicated, and season eight should prove to be a very satisfying reward.” It’s rumored that the final episodes will bring the character full circle, centering around the killer of Monk’s beloved wife.
Season seven episodes will continue in January 2009. Monk’s last 16 episodes are scheduled to begin airing sometime next summer.
I'd love to be on the radio and all, but it'd have to be in another market. WMSP isn't hiring.
ReplyDeleteThat does it. Monk and Natalie are hooking up. I can't help, but imagine what that will mean for his OCD and clean wipes.
ReplyDeleteMaybe his Natalie love will cure his OCD.
jgt - bring it on over here to the atl. local sports talk here stinks on ice.
ReplyDeleteHotties,
ReplyDeleteyou can relax. no more Monk talk from me tonight. Gotta buckle down and get a crapload of work done so I can skeedaddle by 11:30.
Cheers.
I would like everyone to know that I will be introducing Northern New York state to the HABOTN this weekend through multiple mediums.
ReplyDelete1) Discuss it ad nausium with people who could care less about Auburn Athletics
2)Expose people to the power of the HABOTN by laughing as I lurk on and they read over my shoulder the great posts by all hotties.
3) Rock the official HABOTN t-shirt over all outerwear so that i look like a really really phat hottie.
How about in the Tampa market?
ReplyDeleteThe JGs
Jay G. and J.G. (Jon Gruden)
are the Vols building a monster or what?!
ReplyDeleteWay to rep the hotties, JD
ReplyDeleteJay,
ReplyDeleteI am sure if you ask really nicely Sensi will allow you to pick up one of the time slots he has available on his show in Tallassee.
Also, I know that Pike Road was looking to start their own radio station in an effort to give all residents the ability to have no connection to the city of montgomery although technically they are in montgomery.
Monster ... you mean a monster payroll expense?
ReplyDeletePike Road radio. Sweet.
ReplyDeleteexpensive and talented..has anything like this ever been done before?..a mixture of NFL minds..great recruiters..and yes very very expensive...
ReplyDeleteI'm going to roll out the grenade ...
ReplyDeleteEddie Gran doesn't impress me. Nor scare me.
He seemed like a nice guy with a compelling story, who had a lot of talented guys play for him and a lot of talented guys stand on the sideline with him for reasons that didn't make much sense to me.
Jay,
ReplyDeleteI am afraid if you take over the Pike Road radio station you will be forced to discuss stuff like Jacking up F350s even though you live in the city, how many stickers you can put on the back of your suv, and basketball games played at Macon East Montgomery
gran..orgeron...thompson..monte..it's crazy...
ReplyDeleteEddie Gran lost me when he agreed that Brandon Jacobs should be a Linebacker.
ReplyDeletejust sayin...Look out for the vols..very proud of what CGC is doing so far..
ReplyDeletedon't forget traffic updates - "there's a cow roaming around on old wallahatchie road so be careful out there folks we here at pike road radio don't want to lose both of our listeners."
ReplyDeleteSome on needs to call Longshore out on the radio for Satan losing 4 assistant coaches in 2 years. He sure loved the Tuberville stat about losing 6 coordinators in 10 years.
ReplyDeleteDon't hate on Mayor Stoner's -- I mean, Mayor Stone's -- little burg.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to hear JGT on the radio more... He'd do quite well in the 2-4 slot in the afternoons on 740.
ReplyDeleteI nominate you to make the call biscuitator
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't bother me if we had a local show with Jay on in the afternoon. I am certainally not a big PF fan. However, I think the guy gets pretty good ratings.
ReplyDelete100!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, Mr. Jay G Tate certainly has a face for radio. I was prouder than a bammer with a new baby girl named Saban when Mr. Tate worked minutiae and consigliere into conversation on the show yesterday. Half of the Montgomery market probably scratched their head (or something) and said WTF?
ReplyDeleteAs for a new market, come up to the megastation 1410 AM in Prattville. You're good to go as long as you want to work for free or at least never try to cash your rubber paycheck.
if possible, pf (previously mentioned bald birmingham butthead) & his show have actually gotten worse recently.
ReplyDeleteUT's staff doesn't scare me. Kiffin's done nothing. His dad is old and won't know how to work with college kids. Coach O is nuts. Big whoop.
ReplyDeleteAmen, Michael.
ReplyDeletebtw omnica, that was a joke.
ReplyDeletei know
ReplyDeletephew
ReplyDeletejz ... is "a face for radio" supposed to be a compliment or a denigration?
ReplyDeleteI can't figure that one out.
Any chance the rumor about Lebo bringing in Shaq to teach free throw shooting is true?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't dream of questioning your interpretation Mr. Jay G Tate.
ReplyDeleteHasta La Bye Bye to you all.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Gran Turino
ReplyDeleteWE WANT GRUDEN!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletegood morning hotties. it's 8 degrees and for the past hour i've been outside diggin up some shrubs. why? because mrs. THT asked me to. the ground is frozen
ReplyDeleteLOL
ReplyDeleteGood morning all ....THT...sometimes you gotta just say no.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Monica-
ReplyDeleteI did get to watch the midnight Monk replay. A crew of workers arrived at 7:30 this morning to move a tool shed (I call it our 2nd home) and I had to dig up a row of boxwoods before they got here so they could get their truck in the back. The cold felt invigorating, except to my toes which couldn't feel anything.
Hoopie- Mrs THT spoils me rotten all the time. Every once in a while I have to help out a wee bit.
ReplyDeleteThat makes more sense now, Tar. If it makes you feel any better (and there's no reason it should) it's Zero here right now.
ReplyDeleteGood morning to you, Hoopie.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteGRIDIRON BREAKDOWN is on Saturday at 9:30 am CST.
ReplyDeleteHope you can join in the fun!
good morning Mr. Sensi- After I replant the boxwoods, I'll be on the road to Charlottesville, VA. I don't suppose Gridiron Breakdown will be on XM radio?
ReplyDeleteTHT...that's admirable. I drove 5 hours Thursday nite over and back from our lake cabin b/c my lovely wife didn't leave it in "winter" condition on her last girls trip over there.
ReplyDeleteThis prolonged wet/cold has affected soil compaction on our construction projects. Our comitted delivery dates are in jeopardy. The schedules were prepared based on the recent warmer weather patterns.
Mon..we've jumped to 19 degrees already.
Sensi...I look forward it. I'm sure it will be mostly NFL talk.
ReplyDeleteYour time slot usually doesn't work for me on Sat am.
Hoopie- yep, it's so admirable I had to brag about it HABOTN. 99% of the time I just take up space. BTW, did I fail to mention that Mrs THT was out there digging with me?
ReplyDeleteTHT...Wifey has Horticulture and Landscape Architect degrees. She says don't plant in frozen soil(fwiw).
ReplyDeleteGood morning all. Checking in at a balmy 3 degrees this am.
ReplyDeleteMonica has Art and Counseling degrees and she says don't plant in frozen ground too lol.
ReplyDeleteIt's supposed to get up to 30 today so things are looking up!
Hoopie- it was either dig em up or let em get run over by a huge truck. I try not to plant no matter what the temperature.
ReplyDeleteI saw that someone bagged out this weekend. Why wouldn't they announce that before not showing up?
ReplyDeleteI'm about to head out to replant them. I'll pour boiling water in the holes before I put the shrubs back in. Will that help?
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm kidding.
You're funny, Tar.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you asked, AU1. It gives me an opportunity to use my word again. I believe we have been Jimmy Sextoned. Players who believe their offers are swagalicious enough PRETEND they are taking visits at other schools to get their original school to sweeten the deal. Benton knew LSU wouldn't let him go.
Disclaimer: That's just my theory. It has no factual basis. I am not asserting this as fact. If this HAD been factual...well, I would have said it the same way.
I did see you make a comment previous that mentioned your concern of us being used. I guess if this is a common theme, is there a way to stop using us as cannon fodder. My phrase of the day!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if there is.
Mon....I married well. I struggle with artistic accumen and...she completes me.
ReplyDeleteCTT's method generally kept us from getting used(camps and hav ing a realrelaationship with the recruits), but drew complaints from many recruiting junkies. It seems to me that all schools that chase the "top recruits" get used from time to time. Hopefully the new coaches will have better results in 2010 after having an entire year to build relationships and reduce the "used" factor.
ReplyDeleteOh Yeah...please allow me to plagerize Mon's disclaimer here.
Thanks for the support.
ReplyDeleteTime slot may be changing soon.
Today we will talk some NFL, we will talk about players leaving for draft early as well as a fun guest.
Morning Hot Ones! Jay can we change the opening thread? Thes bball FT stats are just too depressing to be the first thing we see today.
ReplyDeleteIn non sports related news: Did we talk about Tim Cook, acting CEO of Apple, being an Auburn Grad?
sunny and warm with a high in the upper 70s here. gannet is going to sell (doubtful) or close the Tucson Citizen by March. That paer has been around since 1870, i think.
ReplyDeleteMorning everyone!!!
ReplyDelete34 degrees here, but poor Mr. is out on the golf course.
THT, you are a good man to be out gardening in this weather, your wife must have gotten a great guy as well.
Morning everyone, 29 and cloudy. Hope we land a surprise or two this weekend.
ReplyDeleteAnybody object to having a little hate session roundball style today?
ReplyDeleteHATE!!!!
is the "little green man" that lebo talks about the character from the flintstones? if so, maybe he should go all bambam on them.
ReplyDeleteWhy haven't we offered John Sullen? Auburn HS, Ht: 6-5.5 Wt: 325, OT, GPA: 3.5, ACT: 28
ReplyDeleteI'm always available for some BAMA HATE!!!
ReplyDeleteRound the Bowl
Down the Hole ...
HATIN' BAMA HOOPS, UAT STYLE
UAT visits
Make your dang free throws Tigers
Hate Bama, Win Game
How long until football season? I need it now!!!
ReplyDeleteAccording to Woodberry, Ramsey is going to talk with coach Gus.
ReplyDelete
