Auburn def. Alabama, 85-71

We're getting ready for a BIG HALF of college basketball at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.

HABOTN PLAYER OF THE GAME®
Vot Barber -- 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks

AUB 10-20 50.0%
ALA 2-11 18.2%

FT Shooting
AUB 15-21 71.4%
ALA 23-28 82.1%

Rebounding
AUB 31 (12o 19d)
ALA 29 (7o, 22d)

  • FINAL
    Auburn wins, 85-71.

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:33
Auburn leads, 79-64. Auburn seemingly has lost interest in this game. Alabama has not. Probably not enough time remaining for the Tide to truly threaten, but they have been the better team for the past seven minutes or so.

  • THIRD TO @ 7:52
Auburn leads, 75-56. There have been a lot of hard fouls in this game. Waller was going for a dunk moments ago when he was knocked to the ground by a defender. It wasn't anything worth fighting abount or anything, but the Tide clearly isn't afraid to get physical.

  • AUBURN CALLS TO @ 11:22
Auburn leads, 67-50. Getting sloppy again, the home team is.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:57
Auburn leads, 67-45. Highlight of that last period was Robertson making a behind-the-back pass to Barber (in traffic) that led to a lay-up. Really nice play. Auburn is in complete command of the game right now.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:30
Auburn leads, 60-39. Auburn has scored on each of its first eight possessions of the second half. The energy is high. Alabama was called for traveling at 16:01. Automatic media timeout is at 16:00. Can't get the freebie to break the run. Gottfried thought about calling another timeout. He didn't -- Reed rolls down the court and scores on an easy lay-up. It's a landslide right now.

  • ALABAMA CALLS TO @ 18:16
Auburn leads, 49-37. Auburn was getting really hot there, tipping passes and getting scores in transition. Barber took one of those steals, rolled down the lane and posterized someone with a two-handed slam.

  • HALFTIME
    Auburn leads, 42-35.

  3. doesn't sound like it- least we take lead to half time

    ReplyDelete
  4. Joe Ciampi? Kinda like him doing the games.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Maybe that got all the "falling apart" out of the way prior to halftime

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'd listen to Joe Ciampi.

    The man knows basketball.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hope we play a better 2nd than we did in Columbia last Sat.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Rod hasn't been this excited since he got his Frodo doll for Christmas.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh wow. Vot with a massive two-handed dunk.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Absolutely ... Jay G ... he could teach anyone a thing or two about the game .. particularly on D.

    ReplyDelete
  11. This team can play some defense.

They've been doing that all year.

    ReplyDelete
  12. To bad we didn't have a celebration at halftime like the last 6 years.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm sure someone hit this on the first half thread, but I assume it was pretty low not getting the Foy-ODK trophy at half-time for the first time in 7 years.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Alabama is getting werked right now.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Getting blown out of the gym, Alabama is.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Finally have something to give my bammer wife hell about!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jay G,
are you going to give us a recruiting update tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  27. A bammer friend of mine is hoping AU runs bama out of the gym by 50, so they'll fire Gottfried. I told him, I hope AU would get sloppy and only win by 10 so UAT would keep him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm planning to do recruiting coverage tomorrow, absolutely.

The problem remains: Recruits leave from two different locations. I can only cover one. I'll miss some guys.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Bama fans think things are going to get better if they fire Gottfried, but they aren't. They will suck no matter what, it's just natural for them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jay,
You do a bang up job everyday. Dont stress. Maybe Tim Gayle will come help. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  31. You and Goldberg should team up... you could cover 1 exit, he could get the other... then you share notes...

    ReplyDelete
  32. just stick him on the back exit, so you get to talk to the largest number of recruits yourself... you were asking more interesting questions last time...

    ReplyDelete
  33. No i have an idea for ya jay...call L.C. Johnson. Maybe he will do some free lance work with ya.

    ReplyDelete
  34. But Goldberg is my competition!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gottfried on a stick, anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  36. feed him bogus info...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Miller, that's good.

    ReplyDelete
  38. tell him none came by you, and make him feel bad for missing so many...

    Tubby Smith..come on down....

    ReplyDelete
  40. HA Tubby Smith wouldn't come to Bama.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous3:00 PM

Have you been to Minnesota in winter?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Faker,
Have you been in Tuscaloosa anytime? why would he want to come to Bama?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'd rather live in the Gump for the rest of my life than have to live in Tuscaloosa for any amount of time...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Auburn has beaten Alabama in Basketball 4 of the last 5 times!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I lived in Tuscaloser and it was turrible. Montgomery sucks too though.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anonymous3:06 PM

Spent undergrad and grad school there...so yes I am familiar with Tuscaloosa.

Why would he want to coach at Alabama? If he did it would be to stick it to Kentucky I am sure.

Not saying it will happen, but I betcha Alabama is gauging his interest level.

    ReplyDelete
  47. They should hire Eddie Sutton.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Gottfried very down after that loss. Wow. Someone buy that guy a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  49. If he meets me at that new Number 16 place in Hampstead, ill buy him two shots Jay.

Btw, my friend hung with mark one time in Dallas while he was recruiting and he said mark could probably outdrink Sam Elliot. Said dude had like 12 shots in about 45 minutes. He has the pictures to prove them too. He put them on his refrigerator. Its pretty funny.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Gottfried: "I am so down ... man ... I've got to keep this up for another six weeks, then I'll get a million to go away. Bummer. Why couldn't I have had a Tuberville deal?"

    ReplyDelete
  51. Anonymous3:39 PM

He should be down. I expect that the PTB will end the misery in short order. IMO, that is why Dave Hart was hired....to get rid of Gottfried. Mr. Hart played for C.M. Newton at Alabama too, so he knows something about basketball. I'm sure Mal will lean on him heavily.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hee hee. Saw a Bama fan after the game carrying a "Get rid of Mark" sign.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anonymous3:46 PM

    Alan...

Here's a weird story along the same lines as yours... An Auburn friend of mine (with the last name of Simpson) was in South Beach a few years ago during the summer and ran into O.J. Simpson in a bar. The Juice was obliterated. Well this guy got his picture made with him and had the good sense to not mention it to anybody.

Well come Christmas we all started getting Christmas cards with a picture of my friend and a drunken OJ. The caption was "Merry Christmas..from the Simpsons."

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous3:47 PM

    It was me, Zoo Keeper.

    ReplyDelete
  55. FSJ,
That's a classic story right there.

Wouldve loved to see those cards!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm just hatin a little today:

I really hate to do anything that will benefit bama but we really did them a favor. Gottfried must really be aweful.

FSJ I hate to admit this but T-Town is one of my favorite cities in Alabama. My good friend worked at the OTHER mental institute there for 3 years and I always had a blast when I would visit him. I rarely hung with the college kids but the native folk were pretty cool people.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Wow, Bama's basketball team must really give a whole new meaning to the word stink.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Jay do the college coaches let the recruits go to events like the UA/AU bball game during these weekends? I remember seeing recruits at parties when I was in school but that was late evening activities. Do you know much about how their daytime schedules are arranged?

    ReplyDelete
  59. The recruits were probably taking a math aptitude test to see what math class they should be placed in. That sounds like a good weekend activity for a recruit.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I read there were several recruits and coaches at the game.

    ReplyDelete
  61. my dad called from auburn after the game very proud of his au tigers. pretty good effort from auburn. nit here we come! my sister went to law school in tuscaloosa, i always had a good time when i visited her. nice enough place, but a bit too much crimson for my taste.

    ReplyDelete
  62. NCAA president Myles Brand is being treated for pancreatic cancer, and he says the long-term prognosis is "not good."

    ReplyDelete
  63. Football recruits were at the game. They sit way up, though, and I can't leave the game to see who all is there.

The pay sites are multi-reporter endeavors now, so they can be in more than one place.

The HABOTN is limited in that way; unlimited in others.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well, technically speaking, everyone's long-term prognosis is not good.

I'm sorry to hear about Brand.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Kat/Jay thanks for the info. maybe seeing us beat bama in roundball will help sway Brandon Moore. I would love to have him and Farms on our OL.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jay sometimes when I read your comments and look at that pic you do seem like hard core KGB. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anonymous4:55 PM

Fun game to see. (Thanks to AU Wade for the invite and good seats.) These guys really play hard even if they make some bad passes and are a little slow at times. It also looked like they were having fun. Alabama has talent but is very poorly coached. UofAL's idea of a press is pitiful.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Jay my intervew wishlist for tomorrow if you know in advance which exit these guys leave from:

Dequinta Jones, B. Moore, and Emory Blake. I would like to know what Tana is thinking but he has been really tight lip the whole process so that would probably be an exercise in futility.

If you get to Blake can form a question that plays on our past struggles at WR and his chances to really turn that position around his freshman year with Malzahn? That should give him something to think about on the way home. Do that with Moore too!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I read Kodi was with Emory Blake the entire time and he is supposedly having a FANTASTIC time.

    ReplyDelete
  70. War Eagle! Nice win.

Way to get the "one" MrsFrontRim!

Did that Benton kid really visit bama today?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Did anyone see this quote from Lane Kiffin:

"With the staff now complete, not only do we have the best recruiters in the SEC but some of the best in the country," Kiffin said. "To be able to take South Carolina's recruiting coordinator, Mississippi State's recruiting coordinator, Alabama's best recruiter and Auburn's best recruiter over the past 10 years was a great accomplishment for us."

    ReplyDelete
  72. Come on Kodi bring him in!!! Thanks again Kat

Whoa Monica if he did that, UA should be investigated immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  73. BigCat - I read that Kiffin quote to Greg and said, "Well, there ya go. They're the winners. Tell 'em to cancel the SECCG next year."

BigCat - Correction on the Bento to Bama for visit question: Greg just said it was Reuben Randall - not Benton. He claims I heard him wrong. I claim he said Benton. We're going to arm wrestle over it.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Jay --

You heard any thing about TB? Rumor is it might not be a done deal with the CFL after all...

    ReplyDelete
  75. Anonymous5:14 PM

It does start with recruiting, then goes to player development, coaching and then team chemistry/leadershship. A coach really doesn't have a lot of control on the latter. Team chemistry will get you several wins a year. AU didn't have team chemistry this past season. The 2004 team did. They got it after the 2003 embarrassment season.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm hearing a rumor about Blackmon coming back next year. Anyone else heard this?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Monica i think you can take Greg. My wife beats me despite the fact that i have her by over a foot and 150lbs.

Red I should have seen your post.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Anonymous5:22 PM

Michael Crabtree was a 2 star recruit in 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Did we have anyone play in the Shriners game today?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Lane Kiffin's mouth will eventually get him into trouble. An example, during his introductory press conference at Tennessee he gets up there and bad mouths the raiders. Dude be a grown and just talk about how your glad to be at Tennessee.

And as far as his staff goes, seems like a whole lot of chiefs and not enough indians to me.

    ReplyDelete
  81. BigCat, No Auburn players. One Alabama player.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Anonymous5:35 PM

    Agree 100% Ron...

The comment about taking Auburn's top recruiter is laughable since he was out of work anyway.

And he didn't take Alabama's best recruiter either. That is Nick Saban.

    ReplyDelete
  83. i forget who posted it, but someone intimated that tubervillee is laying low, waiting on the tamu job to open up. my question is; what will tuberville's stock look like if chizick has a pretty good year with tuberville's players?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous6:28 PM

Actually Scott...I believe I was the one that posted about Tuberville and A&M.

It was really just a guess on my part.

As to whether Chizik doing better next year would negatively impact perception of Tuberville in the coaching world...I don't think so. Tuberville has a record of achievement over a number of years. Last year doesn't diminish that any more than Dye's last two years diminishes his accomplishments.

And for the record, I think Auburn will be better next year. They have to be on offense at least.

    ReplyDelete
  85. FSJ,

We all said the same thing about our offense last year and we managed to be worse. If i'm not mistaken there are still a couple of teams below us in the offensive statistical category. That comment won't be coming out of my mouth this season.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I think tubs would do good at Texas A&M. They would probably be the only team in the big 12 that played defense.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I am not certain Tuberville will coach again, but there is no doubt he will be able to land a spot at a name school if he chooses. Being one of the top coaches in the SEC for 10 years looks good on a resume.

I am just hoping Chizik can get close to where we were under Tuberville. It ain't likely, but I can hope.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Come on now Zteve...we gotta "Keep hope alive!"

    ReplyDelete
  89. I think it's entirely possible that Chizik can be as good as Tuberville.

If he recruits 25% better than Tuberville, he'll be well on his way right there.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Or better than Tuberville, I might add.

    ReplyDelete
  91. For the record, classifying Eddie Gran as Auburn's top recruiter is plausible.

I think James Willis is as good or better, but skill hasn't match production with him yet. Gran brought in tons of good recruits from south Florida. Willis still is learning his way in Alabama.

    ReplyDelete
  92. This isn't Auburn related, and I am so glad they spanked Alabama, but I am especially fired up that U of L beat #1 Pittsburgh. That makes it 5 in a row, with 3 of the 5 being ranked.

    ReplyDelete
  93. The commented mentioned that Gran was AU's best recruiter over the past 10 years. Over the past 10 years, it has been mostly true. Williz may be able to catch up his recruiting skill or may be currently at that level, but he has not sustained that over that period of time.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Ho Hum 4 out of 5 in basketball, 6 out of 7 in football. Win win win.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I was surprised when Gran wasn't retained. What happened to our Dillard's pileline?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Lanes Daddy should advise him on media relations.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Looks like RB Ladarius Perkins has decommitted and is heading to MSU.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Anyone here a subscriber to Potential Players dot com?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Bryce Brown has a link to Potential Players.Com posted in his Facebook status and I'd be so interested to know the content. The teaser reads:

  101. Miller - Run right over there and pay them $10. Then copy and paste the story to us. I'll sit here and wait.

    ReplyDelete
  102. It seems the Perkins thing was a two-way street.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Here's a great site for those who don't know about it. Right now you can see the remnants of the Bama win celebration.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Sorry Mon, I would if I had $10... But, that's a LOT of money and I just don't have it. I'm about $9.95 shy.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Anybody ever put down bamboo flooring? Curious as to what you think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Kiffen didn't TAKE s**t -- Eddie Gran wasn't retained.

He hired a guy w/o a job. I think CEG is a great man and I wish him the best.

But Kiffen's on borrowed time and will dump Rocky Top and their fans as soon as a NFL gig comes callin.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I am actually pretty impressed with the staff Kiffin has put together. It will be interesting, but being a head coach is a lot more than assembling a good staff.

I do wish we kept Gran and Price. They were both good recruiters and coaches, but we have to look to the future.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Ken Stabler's house in Mobile is in foreclosure. Demon Rum claims another victim. He should drink and eat like a real man - wine coolers and bear claws.

Tray Blackman coming back would be awesome. By my count(without Tray), we only have 4 schollied LBs coming back. If that's the case, some true freshmen will get substantial playing time.

    ReplyDelete

Totally OT...Anybody seen the buzz over the newly announced Palm Pre' smartphone?

If it ever comes to AT&T that might cause me to drop the iPhone. It looks nice.

Yes, I am letting my inner geek out...

    ReplyDelete
  111. I'd like to see what Blackmon could do with a full spring training and an injury-free season.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Anonymous10:17 PM

Steve...My guess is that the PTB/Dye were on a mission to try to get former AU folks on board. That is the propaganda that was "leaked" anyway.

Dumping Price made room for Rocker. Doing so was not a coaching upgrade but appeased the chronic naysayers and created energy. Luper for Gran was arguably not an upgrade, but created energy and appeased the folks that actually thought they knew enough to second guess which RB should be in on each play.

Price is now at Ole Miss.....We essentially swapped DL coaches with Ole Miss.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Petrino hired John L. Smith to Arky?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Anonymous10:23 PM

Mon...I'm lazy and ignorant. Who is John L. Smith? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  115. John L. Smith was at Mich State and then went to Louisville. I think it was when he was at Louisville that he slapped himself in the face. He's a little nutty.

Stabler is an embarassment. It seems that most everyone from LA has a first-hand Stabler story....and they all have the same theme.....drinkin' and cheatin'.

  117. Nope, it was when he was at Mich State. Here's the YouTube of it.

  120. After much thought about this today, I believe I've come up with a suitable activity for Mr. Jay G Tate during his forced sabbatical. The world is crying out for a Dokken tribute band.

    No thanks necessary.

  121. Apeaking of Kenny the Shakes Stabler -- anyone know about the story where The Shakes set up a member of the media, maybe a guiy from the west coast who had written something derogotory about him?

Finebaum had a caller or two ask him about it and he said it eluded it was true.

Something about placing some narcotics in his car or something and calling one of his drinking biuddies in the Mobile police department.

Class act that belongs on the Criminal Tahd's airwaves.

    Damn Ole Miss.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Joe whitt recruited better in 3 years than
    Gran did in 10.

If you don't think Rocker is better than Price, then you are nuts and have zero clue about football.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I don't think LaDarius Perkins is a guy Auburn will miss.

He's a 5-9 tailback/scatback. I think Auburn has much better options emerging in McCalebb and ... someone they sign.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Anonymous8:07 AM

"Nuts and know nothing aout fooball".....If you are going to accuse someone of that, you really outta back up your Rocker/Price Argument with stats and details.....I'm ready to counter you argument.
