Ted Roof speaks

We'll be starting momentarily.
  • "I'm excited about the opportunity Coach Chizik has afforded me."

  • Which position will you coach?: "(Chizik) has not made a decision about that."

  • Philosophy: "You've still got to stop the run to win football games. What you got to do is try to get people off kilter with going after folks and being aggressive and try to make teams one-dimensional so you can get creative on defense. It's not the schemes that win and lose for you; it's the players that you recruit and that you develop. At the same time, you're only going to be as good as your base defense and your fundamentals allow you to be. Because when you get in that thunderstorm, you've got to have a place you call home. Your base defense and playing fundamental football, just throwing blocks and getting off blocks and tackling and pursuit angles, all the things that seem so elementary to some people but are really the differences between winning and losing."

  • Any coaches in particular shape your ideas?: ``I've been around a lot of good football coaches. I've learned from everybody I've been around. To say it's one person, that would not be accurate. It's a culmination of being around a bunch of people."

  • "It was huge for our defense that Antonio Coleman is coming back. He has a national reputation."

  • "I don't know Paul (Rhoads)."

  • Timetable of hire: Chizik called Minnesota coach Tim Brewster for permission to speak. Flew into Atlanta on Sunday. Drove to Auburn on Monday. Finalized it then."

  • Minnesota improvements: "We knew we had to do a good job with creating takeaways. We did that. I saw a lot of good things happening."

  • Recruiting: "I'm detailed and thorough. It's built on relationships. In the end, the relationships get you over the hump. I love it -- and I love having a great product to sell like Auburn University."

  • What do you remember about Auburn?: "I made this comment to Coach Dye, when you got done playing Auburn it felt like somebody had taken a rubber hose and just beat you with. Back when they ran the bone and kept pounding you. As a football player you always respect the physical teams, the teams that hit you in the mouth."

(Roof played at Georgia Tech from 82-85.)

  • He doesn't know the other Auburn coaches.

  • Other defensive coaches: "Coach Chizik is the head coach and those will be his decisions."

  • He'll start work on Thursday.

  • "Coach Chizik is the head coach and he has the right to involve himself and be involved in every aspect of the program, which most head coaches do and I'm sure he will as well. I look at it as a real plus to have a guy with a defensive background that Gene has and all his expertise that he brings to his staff and to the table."

  1. I don't know what that means, but it sure makes WJOX look stupid!

    ReplyDelete
  2. My hate for WJOX rivals that of my hate for the ATL Falcons.

Bill King + Rivals Radio = Win.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The word gauche is not used enough. It perfectly describes everything about WJOX. I stopped listening to them about 7 months ago for many reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I am getting really tired of seeing a naked asian beside the word "uno" in every dang thread.

    ReplyDelete
  5. PF - The least he could do is use Korean for "one"

    ReplyDelete
  6. PF....

Totally Agree... not that we are being Asianist! (that's racist with an asian twist!)

    ReplyDelete
  7. grumpy peter in the house

    ReplyDelete
  8. PF,

Don't hate on DL... he's just a little quicker to the post!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. How about a naked Ethiopian? Would that be acceptable?

    ReplyDelete
  10. DL is quick on the draw....

    ReplyDelete
  11. Welcome to HABOTN, Robusto!

    ReplyDelete
  12. i'd prefer not to see any naked dudes at all. you can call me sexist if you want. no naked DUDES!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Scottie, that just begs the question as to whether naked chicks would be acceptable to you? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I hadn't heard of Ted Roof before yesterday. Pretty boring name, no z's, no Trooper. I'm guessing he will actually be an assistant DC to Chiz.

Did anyone hear Tim Brando on Finebaum yesterday? What a loser!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm right there with you Scottie...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was under the impression 2 more defensive guys would be hired. DL and DB, so Roof would not have to focus on any position.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Kristina, I'm glad to see we're on the same page. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Guru, that's entirely possible.

Roof was pretty evasive when asked which position he would coach ...

    ReplyDelete
  19. So I can tell everyone is really interested in what Roof had to say...

    ReplyDelete
  20. It sounds like Roof either really wanted to coach at Auburn, or really wanted out of Minnesota.
    Maybe both.
What position will you coach? "Don't know"
    Who's your assistants? "Don't know"
Why'd you take the job? "It's 20 below right now in minnetonka! I was freezin my rump off!"

    ReplyDelete
  21. For your information I am wearing a towel.

    것 - translate that!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Kristina....

    Kristina....

    Kristina....

    ReplyDelete
  23. Other defensive coaches: "Coach Chizik is the head coach and those will be his decisions."

shouldn't the coordinators have some kind of input on who 'their' guys are? is this a foreign concept?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Is it done then Jay? Or is JOX trying to figure everything out? I really want to read more of his coach-speak.

    ReplyDelete
  25. "A remarkably gauche move".....nice!

  26. Faker, Faker, Faker...

  27. D.Miller -

Luper will visit Bryce brown, #1 RB in country,in-school Thursday

  29. Help us mitigate a Beat Writer Dispute®:

Has anyone ever see a hose pipe?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Skip out on the Finebaum yo, your rational thinking will thank you.

I used to dig the AM690 D&B show, but then I got Sirius, and I've never looked back.

As much as I love me some AU Football, all local stations are 24/7 AU/UA talk no matter the time of year.

I need some variety in my sports diet.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So... In the interest of redirecting the conversation away from naked...

Not only did the WJOX move make them look stupid, it tends to reinforce the impression that they're just a bunch of bammers at heart.

I do actually care what Teddy has to say, but it sunds like there are still more unanswered questions than answered ones. The thing that struck me is that he hit hard on recruiting and relationships, which is obviously a theme for this staff.

    ReplyDelete
  32. a 'hash pipe' yes, a 'hose pipe' no. :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jay..

If you are from Gadsden, AL you have seen a hose pipe....

    ReplyDelete
  34. A hose pipe is like a garden hose, but can be thicker.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Jay G. Tate - Fbaum is quoting your blog ONCE AGAIN getting his Roof info from you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Finebaum is reading your blog JGT for his information.

    ReplyDelete
  37. and now Fbaum is saying don't blame WJOX for carrying the press conference live because they aren't LOL

    ReplyDelete
  38. i was introduced some of my favorite curse words when my pops found the dog chewing on said hose pipe

think it's a southern synonym for garden hose :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. A hose pipe is what I use to get my gasoline every night.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Looks like Fbaum is trolling the HABOTN and quoting JT's work!

    ReplyDelete
  41. and he's loving your Chiz update - the one in red

so basically Fbaum is now getting all his Auburn news from Jay G

    ReplyDelete
  42. I hope Super Luper took a copy of the GMAC and tells the recruits this is a must see tv production.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I've never heard of a "hose pipe," but I'll man up and admit that Charles Goldberg isn't delusional.

    Hose pipes exist, Goldberg.

    I'll admit it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jay G.
A hose pipe is a short piece of Garden Hose (2'+/-) that been cut of and used to beat somebody with!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hose pipes are used in areas were the girls are named Lisir, not Lisa...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Dear Lead - They are WAY at the top of my wish list. Man oh man would that be a huge get.

The OSU folks are aren't happy about it either.

    ReplyDelete
  52. oops that would be "cut off"

    ReplyDelete
  54. we pulled carnell and ronnie late (if my memory serves me right)..

    ReplyDelete
  55. Monica,

OSU had better be nice or we will come back and take their OL coach..

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think I heard my father-in-law use "hose pipe" once, but I don't know if he picked it up during his time in Gadsden or Akron. Where's Roof from originally?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I took that WJOX thing down.

It's moot now. The teleconference is over ...

    ReplyDelete
  58. I never heard hose pipe, but the coke thing was true for me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I grew up in San Diego and Tulsa.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Mr. A hose pipe is what your child is outside chewing on right now.
JGT- do u need to see the evidence?

    ReplyDelete
  61. HAHAHAHA Cowboy. Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hey Jay,,,

We grew up in different places together....

    ReplyDelete
  63. jhz...

Your father in law work at Goodyear?

    ReplyDelete
  64. FSJ - nope, but his dad did. Good call.

Ok, I'm on a plane now, so I'll bow out for a while to comply with FAA regulations. Later Hotties.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Slang terms are not just Southern. I mean we could go to the Ba in the ca? Right

    ReplyDelete
  66. "you give us a product, we'll cheer for it" so says the bamer

now THAT is a sidewalk fan and it had nothing to do with being an alum or not

    ReplyDelete
  67. Dear leader, I figured you were reared in Pyongyang.

    ReplyDelete
  68. yes,

    different places....

    ReplyDelete
  69. Very cunning ... as advertised by fellow North Koreans.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  74. Damages is stupid.

What do you guys think of the BC coaching situation?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Anonymous4:13 PM

Why did I let my curiosity regarding DL's avatar cause me to view it full size?....my eyes....my eyes....

    ReplyDelete
  76. lol Hoopie good bet

Just looking our for my fellas, Scottie.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Michael - This is what we do to one of my friends does that. We go over and rub her back and say, "You're the prettiest girl in the whole wide world and we're all jealous of you."

When you need love just ask for it, darlin.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hoopie,
Dammit man did we not tell you not to turn around or you would turn to salt!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think I'm gonna like this Luper dude!

If he can deliver those guys the way he delivered on Troop, then I'll be sold!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Anonymous4:16 PM

Michael...I think that you should interview for the currently available BC HC job. Of course, you must be willing to lose your present job just for interviewing

    ReplyDelete
  81. D - I will simply be beside myself if he gets any of those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Why has no one ever told me I'm the prettiest girl in the world? I wish I had friends like you. Maybe it's my hat that is the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Anonymous4:17 PM

Gamorra is righteous.....compared to DL's avatar.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I thought a hose and a pipe were essentially the same. Hoses are thinner and flexible while pipes are thicker and more sturdy.
So is a "hose pipe" a flexible pipe? Or a sturdy hose?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hi Dear Leader-
    Unfortunately, proxify.com and anonymouse.org don't work in prison :-(
But I thank you for those suggestions.

    Hello Hotties!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Anonymous4:20 PM

In fact, Jay/Mon's word of the day...gauche.........never mind.. worse.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Anonymous4:21 PM

Sorry, I'm 90+ behind. What's the story on JOX? What was said?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I've been beaten with a hose pipe, drunk from a hose pipe, siphoned gas with a hose pipe, rolled up a hose pipe and once dated a girl who could...I'll shut up now.

    ReplyDelete
  89. BigMike - you drive about 1 mile from my house when you come through WV.

    ReplyDelete
  90. JOX created a mess on the Roof teleconference by leaving their feed on the call. So rather than being able to her Ted Roof discuss Ted Roof, we were hearing the latest updates from ESPN ... via JOX.

It was gauche, but it's over now.

    ReplyDelete
  91. j-z- I think i know that girl

    ReplyDelete
  92. haven't gotten all the way through the posts, this may have already been answered...
    것 =

  95. Anonymous4:26 PM

    Thanks, Jay G.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anonymous4:28 PM

    J-Z....once found out.....everyone dates that girl...for a while.

In fact, Barkley was seeking her the other night.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I never quite got to her, the cop was a cock-blocker.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Anonymous4:30 PM

    104

    ReplyDelete
  99. J-z I've had the exact same hose pipe experiences. My youthful summertimes spent in South GA we "drank wooda ottda hose pipe".

    ReplyDelete
  100. BigCat = That's a "spicket"

    ReplyDelete
  101. BFG....

Careful... i smell a Bamhammer event coming!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Brice Brown would be an absolute possessed demonic freakish beastly freak of nature specimen with the Gus Malzahn offense

    ReplyDelete
  103. Ok...I have to know who the O line coach is going to be. This is messing with me and Pat's carefully orchestrated timetable for ressurecting the AU Football program.

We need Kicker on A Stick now people. To the tune of Shaft of course. Or we could mix in a little of this...

    Superfly

    ReplyDelete
  104. tar heel

I am humbles and honored that you have been so dilligent in your studies...

tommorrow we will work on our ringlish.

    ReplyDelete
  105. nahhhh Mon..

you turn on the spicket and drank from the hose!!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. oops that would be the "hydrant"

    ReplyDelete
  107. I'm just saying - If we get Bryce Brown - I don't know - I'm going to have to come up with something.

    ReplyDelete
  108. DL

    "ringlish"

Bahahahahahaha I spit up my afternoon "hottie tottie"

    ReplyDelete
  109. turn on the spicket and drank from the hose...

    got it

    ReplyDelete
  110. Monica which staffer do you think brings in the 1st big recruit and who do you think it will be??

I'll go Luper - Byrce Brown

    Should be an easy sell:
Tulsa O + Great RB coach + RB U + early playing time = Bryce Brown to AU!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Who are Bryce Brown's top choices?

    ReplyDelete
  112. I was warned, but I looked anyway. WTF? Who uses a naked Kim Jong Il as an avatar? Somebody hold me....My therapist is out of town.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I say Luper and either Bryce or Reuben.

If either of those things happen y'all will hear me "hollerin'" all the way from West By Gawd Virginia.

    ReplyDelete
  114. am i really late on this but i just heard Knowshown and Stafford declared?

    ReplyDelete
  115. j-z,

ok let me try to talk you down!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  116. HAHAHAHAHA @ "somebody hold me"

    SNORT!

    ReplyDelete
  117. No No No Mobilz...you drank from the hose, you PLAY in the 'hydrant'!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I just need to be held. My eyes...oh dear God my eyes...they burn so bad. Make it stop...dear lord, please just make it stop.

    ReplyDelete
  119. spigot or faucet

    ReplyDelete
  120. I know... i searched all around but I could not find a naked asian on a metal folding chair in the middle of a cold damp concrete basement.

so I settled for this self portrait. I getting up, beer anyone..

    ReplyDelete
  121. Bigcat,
    Sorry you are so correct!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  122. If that pic is of a naked Kim jong Il I will be highly disappointed in Dear Leader and may lead a charge to have his HABOTN rights suspended

    ReplyDelete
  123. Bryce was a soft commitment to Miami, but he's opened his options back up.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I am wearing a towel.

    ReplyDelete
  125. DL

Hell No! Dont get up!don't stand, don't do anything... stay right where you are....

I'll get the damn beer myself!!!

    ReplyDelete
  126. You guys are killing me today! :D

    ReplyDelete
  127. Monica,

if you have time take a look at the Bryce videos on scout or Rivals... if we land this guy (a big if still) he can be a ledgend on the plains.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Anyone missing a golf ball?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Monna,

Do you think we really have a chance with Bryce or Reuben?

    ReplyDelete
  130. My Dear, Dear Leader - I have looked at those videos and wept. He moves me. I want him to be an Auburn Tiger sumpin fierce!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Ahh, his brother is the big linebacker that committed to Miami last year. I knew he looked familiar. I haven't seen any articles on him related to
Auburn. Have we been talking to him?

    ReplyDelete
  132. all my little won tonis calling me to dinner so I must go...

We will step back in to the High Roller Room a later

    ReplyDelete
  138. Anonymous4:59 PM

Mon - Send the cold air so we get snow instead of rain. Killing me.

    ReplyDelete
  139. i think the bc thing was because they had a certain bickamn, jr. waiting in the wings--ibelieve he is the son of the coach who coached flutie.

    ReplyDelete
  140. It's good to see the new coaches going after the blue chip recruits once again, especially on offense. It's probably a little too late to land any off them, but it's worth a shot to gauge interest.

And if those are the kids luper has been going after, I'd be interested to hear what trooper taylor is up to.

    ReplyDelete
  141. After reading Jay's blog, I am convinced that Chizik is the DC, and it sounds like many of your are also. I am not sure if I like this hire, but the OC was much more important anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Anonymous7:00 PM

Ron - I agree about that. It seemed that previously we said we couldn't get 'em so why waste time.

    ReplyDelete
  143. AU1 - I've ordered the cold weather in your direction. It should be arriving soon.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Anonymous7:32 PM

    Thank ya!

    ReplyDelete
  145. Omnica...If you're saying that you found my golf ball...Well, I just may feel a case of the vapors coming on. (Swoon)

    ReplyDelete
  146. Have I mentioned I don't like being back at work.

Does anyone have any ideas on who our OL coach is going to be.
My 2 cents on Malzahn offense great ball faking camera man was lost on several occasions. To me that is a big difference in Franklin's spread and Malzhan offense.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Anonymous7:51 PM

    Why is it slow?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Why is what slow?

    ReplyDelete
  149. Anonymous7:53 PM

    This blog....no one is here.

    ReplyDelete
  150. no football, no Penguins hockey, no juicy recruiting updates or new ass't coaches = slow

    ReplyDelete
  151. I just realized my Facebook profile indicated I was "interested in" women which explains some of the advertisements that have been showing up for me.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Anonymous7:56 PM

Let me rephrase. There are usually more than just you and I...and by the way....I did get a new friend who was a bit soaked yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Anonymous7:57 PM

    Go girl!! GKG!!

    ReplyDelete
  154. glad you got that fixed Monnie. yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I saw that, AU1. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  156. Well, it was no biggie. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Scottie - You got your Damages face on???? 1 Hour countdown!

    ReplyDelete
  159. Has anyone seen something about Gus being in Gadsden tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  160. nope, and i didn't see him at the Apple store tonight, either

    ReplyDelete
  161. I just found it! Gus and Willis are in-home visiting Kendall Kelly tonight. Kenall has one spot for a visit left and we hope it's to Auburn on Jan 30.

Then he zipped over to Maryland to visit Cotton.

    ReplyDelete
  162. I am here. All is well.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Kendall Kelly is the 4 star WR from Gadsden - has offers from bama, clemson,FSU, LSU,Oregon,USC, Texas,CO.

    ReplyDelete
  169. TarHeel, have you ever heard of a little show called 'Damages'? it starts in 40 minutes on FX. i highly, highly recommend it.

    ReplyDelete
  170. From Jeff Lee at Rivals

In a text message to AuburnSports.com Wednesday, Lutzenkirchen wrote, "...nothing has changed...still want to go to Auburn but looking around to be safe...Wde."

  171. DAMAGES RAWKS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  172. Scottie do y'all watch Mad Men?

    ReplyDelete
  173. History has Armageddon week. Right now they're talking about the dinosaur extinction.

    ReplyDelete
  174. nope. never seen it. the wife doesn't care for my FX shows so i generally watch them alone. she can stomach Prison Break but that's it.

    ReplyDelete
