Auburn adds another commitment ... sort of

TUESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,029

Daphne High quarterback Robert Cooper has committed himself to the Tigers' program, but won't make the roster until January 2010 ... at the earliest. We know this because our friends at AuburnSports.com tell us it is so.

Cooper will be grayshirting. He will sign a Letter of Intent on Wednesday, but will not enroll as a full-time student until January. That will preclude him from participating in football activities this fall because those endeavors are limited to full-time undergrads or graduates engaged in post-baccalaureate studies. When he joins the team in January 2010, he'll have five years to play four.

Cooper can play a variety of positions. Time will tell.

Auburn's last successful grayshirt: LB Chris Evans.

  1. Bowl Game Highlights

Repost from the last thread. The big on the Sugar Bowl is worth it.

  2. 10 Year Anniversary (when The Onion was funnier)

    "Oh The Humanity"

    ReplyDelete
  3. "Funnier" in my personal opinion that is...

    ReplyDelete
  4. The Sugar Bowl headline was not from the Onion. That was real.

  5. Jay G, is there a time when kids can just try out to walk on the team, or do they have to have that lined up before the get to campus? i guess i mean, does Auburn ever have open try outs or anything like that?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I wonder where they see Cooper playing. He is a dual threat QB, but seems a bit slow from what I have seen and read. He does have good size.

    ReplyDelete
  7. PM has a list of players who were former Auburn commitments. He lists ten, and a lot of them look to be good recruits. Somehow I didn't realize how many we have lost.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Auburn holds open tryouts, yes.

They also invited selected players to walk on during the fall.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hotties ...

Having known GaTiger for the better part of 28 years, let me assure you his new avatar is beyond apropos.

And "Oh, the Humanity" still makes me cry everytime I read that.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jay..do you know anything on the Burgess kid (Rick's son of the Rick and Bubba show...) I heard Rick talking this AM that he had committed to AU.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Brian, I've heard he has been invited as a walk-on.

    ReplyDelete
  12. SeanZ ... I have heard same ... invited walk-on. Who knows? He may be fighting Dellenbach and Knipper for the snapping job.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Cool..thanks SeanZ.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Jay G, what do you think the mark of success will be for Chizik's recruiting for this year. I mean if he gets one person to change he mind, is that a success. Just trying to get an idea of what the standard is. I realize that this will probably not be the norm for years to come, this seems to be more of a thing that he did to make a splash and to try to catch up.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Also, for everyone interested, an invited walk-on reports at the begining of camp with all the scholarship playeres, whereas the "tryouts" occur closer to september, after fall camp has been underway for about 3-4 weeks if not longer.

    ReplyDelete
  16. What is with the chatter on rivals about Lutz? Did some whacko predict him to switch over to bammer or something? Surely there's nothing legit to that....... Right?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Denny- I believe this group of coaches can recruit big time, and I really believe given time, they will pull in some big time players. As far as success this year, I believe it is measured by how we have been able to get into the picture of so many big time players in such a short time bolds well for the future. Tuberville was an area based recruiting strategy, whereas I believe that these coaches are going to go after the best players using any relationship means they are privy to.

Denny..good to see you back, we missed your wisdom. You have been in my prayers.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Miller, I've seen absolutely nothing to that on the scout boards. Also over at PMarsh's site the headline is Lutz w/ "Happy to be an Auburn Tiger" and his contact at UAT was Lance Thompson, this just seems like wishful thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jet - thanks (or maybe not???), glad I'm not the only one who finds something like that funny.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Eddie ... Hallelujah and amen.

There's no doubt in my mind that we have to re-establish ourselves in the state, but we're in a Global Village ... so let's go global, perhaps even intergalactic.

    ReplyDelete
  22. But the Klingons would keep getting penalized for unnecessary roughness.

    ReplyDelete
  23. James T. Kirk ***** QB. He's been referred to has the quintessential QB, a man among men and a hero for the ages.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Eddie, is there a place to find out when the open try outs are for uninvited walk ons? you think it is on the AU website?

    ReplyDelete
  25. All this Lutz mess on Rivals is a hoax my some poster. Don't buy into it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. AUNugget- All anyone has to do is go to the complex and let them know you want to walk on and they will direct you to whoever is in charge of it now. I don't know who would be in charge anymore, but that will get you sent in the right direction. You should also do it well before the fall if possible.

    ReplyDelete
  27. SeanZ ... what about this Spock guy ... he's just a 3 star, but I hear Vulcans and JUCO guys can only get 3 stars from Rivals and Scout.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Awesome. Thanks Eddie.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jet, I've heard even though he's only a 3 Star it's only, logical, that he be signed.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hooray 7 quarterbacks!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. As for how this staff has done recruiting wise, I think they have held their own. We lost a lot of talent, but they have also brought some talent in.

So far, the strategy of this staff has been similar to Tuberville's in that we focus on a wider are, but that could change next season. If this staff continues to raid the Texas/Oklahoma area and continues to recruit the traditional states Auburn has pursued in the southeast, it could bode very well for Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  32. gatiger,
I just read the link. Laughed so hard I peed my pants. Good thing I wear Depends at work so I never have to leave the HABOTN.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hope there are some 6-5 300 pound students walking around with nothing to do on fall Saturdays. I want to personally ask Grif to request some O-linemen to go with our new o-line coach.

    ReplyDelete
  34. yeah, 7 QBs, 6 RBs, and one Mario Fannin who is/ can be both. sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Undercover is apparently also listing Quan Fletcher (LB, Dr. Krop HS Miami) as an AU prospect. First I've heard of him, and he doesn't list AU as one of his schools on any of the major services. . .

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't think we make much of a move this year (read: tomorrow on signing day). Honestly, in the year of a coaching change, if we are top 15 that is unbelievable. If we are top 15 after the kids arrive, that is even more impressive. Something tells me we will be top20-25 after admissions and then pick up several of these kids a year or two down the road after prep or juco.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Am I the only one having "Refresh" issues here?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't think Cooper is being brought in with any aspirations for the QB spot. I see him more in the mold of Will Herring (high school QB, brought in and made into a hybrid S/LB). Cooper will probably be a LB (if his speed is close to what is reported - 4.5/4.6)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Probably the scariest thing about this recruiting season is the amount of talent we lost to Ole Miss. Ole Miss was very impressive this past season and should be just as good or better next season. The SEC West is going to be very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Mon, I saw on the university's official website that tryouts start on Thurs. Do you have your bags packed? We could come out and cheer for you and make signs like American Idol.

    ReplyDelete
  41. DMiller,

I agree, The Will Herring project, everydown here near Daphne, said he is a great athlete, can play anywhere and any sport, very big but agile, so I am glad he wont go to waste.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What position Mon?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have many funny walk on stories...many dont last the ones that do man o man, they are men.

Jimmy Ranes son walked on, I know him and let me tell you he was terrible in high school. He did it for daddy.

Another big booster, from my hometown, Downs, his son walked on Watson Downs, same thing. Its a daddy make me proud moment.

I had a friend who walked on at Florida State. He quit right after tackling drills he was laid out by Derrick Brooks, my friend was like 5'11 165.

    ReplyDelete
  44. There are some for real walk ons, like the kid from Prattville, that should have played somewhere, but most are just living the dream to see if they can make it and see how much of a difference there is from local town football to the SEC. Im sure its a crazy experience. Guys you grown up watching and then getting laid out by them.

  48. That's so sweet, Will.

What position? I'll have to think and think and think about that.

I have a friend who walked on at Florida. He made it, started, but was injured. Mostly he was hawt.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm on my way to buy the new MON auburn jersey as we speak!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Can Cooper Punt??

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hey Scottie - I'll have to watch that when I get home, but thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Jay G - Someone else was supposed to be in that seat on the plane, but gave it to Buddy and rode with someone instead. Who was it?

    ReplyDelete
  53. AUant - You know my number, right?

  54. Interesting that on al.com they have a ranking of recruiting classes from 2004 to 2008. Auburn ended up ranked 12th. Not bad.

  59. Best Walk-on I ever saw was Alex Lincoln. The guy has the best attitude and I was thrilled that Tubs rewarded him with a scholarship and all the great things that happened for him at Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Quan Fletcher is an interesting recruit...the sites speak well of him, but he was between two of the top LB's in this years class...so he was either looked over, or looked better because of the talent around him...
The only big schools after him are Purdue and Tenn

    ReplyDelete
  61. There seems to always be a few walkons that make it. Usually they are guys like Jeremy Cox that have shown the talent but got injured and their stock dropped.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Welcome to the HABOTN Bow9den

    ReplyDelete
  63. Kevin Greene is the best ever Auburn Walk-on....he did not even make the team his first tryout

    ReplyDelete
  64. Welcome to the wide wide world of HABOTN, bow9den.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Emmett, Kevin Greene is a great example. He had a successful pro career and also dabbled in raslin I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I thought we were dead in the water with Greg King, but Jeff at AuburnSports.com has him at 50% for Auburn. Hmmm

Also, Farms didn't want to talk to Jay G. and gave him the cursory "was good" = knew he was a goner.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Phred, was it Waylon Jennings?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Rod Smith was a walk on, and we are lucky he did.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I don't blame Farms for heading to UNC. Chapel Hill is a beautiful place. It is a fairly big town with a small town atmosphere. I worked there for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  70. None of that matters, Steve.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well Z, how could he not rassle...he and Hulk Hogan and the same Skullet...it was a quick bond

    ReplyDelete
  72. I had heard the Richardson had some second thoughts. If he heads to Rocky Top, watch for Bambies jumping off bridges.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Kevin Greene- I heard from the equipment manager at the time, that when he first walked on that he weighed like 150 lbs and then the second time he walked on, he came in at at like 230 lbs and all the weight gain was pure muscle. He was always rumored to be on roids, but back then, a lot of the team was rumored to be using roids.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thanks Everyone,I feel welcomed here. Also, no bammers in sight.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Poor Oku sounds way overwhelmed. Maybe he doesn't have the nerves of steel and all that he needs to get it done with me and the boys on the Plains. Hmmmmm, I say again.

    ReplyDelete
  76. depressedAUfan wins the cookie.

    ReplyDelete
  77. but yeah 15yrs pro... 5 ProBowls... the sack record for an LB ...2008 Fall of Fame semifinalist...
    and the biggest thing...
That hit he had on Brett Farve where Farve had to leave the game because he was coughing up blood

    ReplyDelete
  78. Emmett said...Can Cooper Punt??
Cooper runs a 4.5, and has a big frame. Reminds me of Will Herring!

    ReplyDelete
  79. bow9den, FSJ is a Bambi who will be around, but he is pretty cool. As long as the dicussion doesn't get to the point of mentioning 12 all the time, I am good with it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sorry, Bow9den, we do have a bamer and he even posts. There are others, but they lurk mostly.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Bow9den - The Bammers stop by, but they never stay... something about using logic and fact confuses them

    ReplyDelete
  82. Faker lives here!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Kevin Greene was a 130 lb punter. Then he discovered... um... muscle building milk shakes, and became a BEAST!!

I think they served those milk shakes at KAZ.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Well, Bambies do have their purpose. There have been a few that provided targets for the banhammer. Fortunately this place has remained informative and the discussions tend to be either fun or genuine without personal attacks.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I tend to think of Faker as someone we recruited from the dark side.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Emmett - I think many of them are also frightened away by the first few opening posts. Where we Hotties jump out there showin' off all our knowledge of countin' and stuff. That just intimidates them since numbers and Math in general are a problem for them.

    6 does not = 12.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Bow9den - I was joking about him punting...I think he will be a Safety or perhaps the TE/WR hybrid Malzahn used at Tulsa

    ReplyDelete
  88. 6 does not = 12.
    Beautiful.
That should be on the next HABOTN t-shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  89. at 6-4 204 he would have only needed to gain 10 pounds and he would be big enough to play line for Coach Franklin

    ReplyDelete
  90. Does anyone think we will offer Taikwon Paige ? Also, this HABOTN isn't full of bammers like AL.com.

    ReplyDelete
  94. AL.Com can be a sore subject around here...there are some folks who down them big time....
I just hate anything to do with Finebaum....

I have gotten the feeling T.P. is a wait and see guy...he wants to come, but we may not have a offer if some of the big names say yes

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think Faker came out of the closet some time ago. So to speak...

    ReplyDelete
  99. Michael - But she was in Brewton...Small Towns are 75% Bamma

    ReplyDelete
  100. Bow9den - Very True...I think he would be a great add...we can always use DB's

    ReplyDelete
  101. I think Monica is the sage on proper Facebook etiquette (among other things).

My guess is she frowns on wall posts asking Tyrik Rollison whether he'll qualify. Undoubtedly bad form by a few young Tigers!!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Thank you, Hotties, for your help fighting this attempt at defamation.

A pox on your home, Michael.
    You will pay.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Please tell me that isn't happening comm'r?!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Miller - There were people making cracks to Clint Moseley after Tyrik committed. Punk comes in all forms and school affiliations.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I was just reading more about Kevin Greene...the same year he did not make the team, he was starting his Army career....he went through boot camp and became a Paratrooper before he made the team the second time...that might explain some of his size

    ReplyDelete
  108. Commish - I say anyone doing something like that ought to be wearin' an erhinch jumpsuit for bein' guilty of cap'tal ignunce.

  127. Phred -

Richardson had developed a case of the flu during the tour and asked one of Holly's bandmates, Waylon Jennings, for his seat on the plane; Jennings agreed to give up the seat. When Holly learned that Jennings wasn't going to fly, he said, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes." This exchange of words, though made in jest at the time, haunted Jennings for the rest of his life.

    ReplyDelete
  128. ehyoutiger,
That reminds me of a night at the Supper Club. My buddy gave me a ride to the Club, but picked up a girl. He told me that he hoped I would have fun riding the drunk bus home. I told him I hoped he got crabs.
It has haunted me my entire life.

Karlos Dansby just wore Finebaum out on Jox!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Oh, please give details Sensi...

    ReplyDelete
  137. He needed to Sensi.

Finebaum went over the line yesterday about him...

    ReplyDelete
  138. PF goes over the line when he gets out of his car to walk into the studio. The jerk.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Sensi, what'd he say? I reeeeeally like Karlos Dansby. I have a picture on my wall of him assaulting Tyler Watts and I named my dog Dansby.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Finebaum harped on Dansby saying his High School name instead of Auburn during Super Bowl introductions or something like that.

Total non issue...Lots of NFL guys do it now. But Finebaum was acting like it was a big act of disrespect.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Anonymous2:00 PM

He said that F-Baum needs to apologize to him for questioning his integrity. He was just showing love to his hs. He says Chizik and Auburn who moved him from SS to LB was the best thing that happened to him.

F-Baum dropped 36-0 on him and he said that means nothing to me, I have four Iron Bowls under my belt.

He called Paul a Bama guy. Paul said he went to UT. KD said we whipped them too.

He is still waiting on the apology.

    Tune into Finebaum for more.

    ReplyDelete
  142. The reason KD does that is quite honorable. I don't know where the article is, but he does it to send a positive message to the kids of Woodlawn HS. It's a reminder that folks from that area if they work hard enough, they can do anything they put their mind to.

    ReplyDelete
  143. It was frivolous Gnome. I tried to pull it back into my mouth but it was too late. Should I issue public apology? How should it go?

    ReplyDelete
  144. Finebaum grew up a Bama fan. I heard him say that with my own ears a few years ago. It was the week of Christmas in either 2001 or 2002. Obviously a slow time on his show. He got to talking about the anniversary of Bear Bryant's last game (must have been 2002 then) and said he grew up a Bama fan but couldn't afford out of state tuition. That's why he went to UT.

FSJ, thanks for confirming the worst kept secret in sports radio. LOL!

I missed that, but I have no doubt he would have said something like that. Truth is, PF knows that if he bangs on Auburn and cool whips Alabama, ratings soar.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Karlos D. is an intense, bright dude. If he wants to rip a man, said man better be ready for a brawl.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I agree with Sensi about PF, which is why I will neve listen to another word out of PF's mouth, nor read anything he writes. The guy is just trying to make money by being a jerk. I bet he cries when he is by himself.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I think Finebaum is a very good writer, but his show is staged to some degree. By that I mean the regular callers (Bobby/Shane/IMan).... I work with a lady whose best girlfriend called in a few months ago. She caused a stir for jumping on Jay Barker about something. Finebaum's producer begged her for weeks to become a regular caller. They were going to give her a direct line so she wouldn't have to wait in line and so forth.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Who wants to lay odds that now that KD is off the air with him finebum turns it around and spins it to try and make KD out to be the bad guy?

Sooner or later, it comes down to fate.
We might as well be the one,
Oku, only the good die young.

  163. The Karlos Dansby calling into finebaum thing is awesome. He's my second favorite player of all-time.

    My list is:

    1. Takeo Spikes
    2. Dansby
    3. Carlos Rogers

  164. Jet - well played.

On the Billy Joel front, for all fathers of daughters, there is no better song than Lullabye. Go ahead and try to contradict me, you can't do it.

  165. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant confuses me...

It's like three songs in one...

    Bottle of Red...Bottle of White..

    Brenda & Eddie..

and finally back to the restaurant.

  167. good afternoon, habotnistas. welcome to the new posters. I think i'm in line to get a $10.00 refund from comcast for the super bowl porno faux pas the other day. not sure why they're doing that, but okay by me.

  168. I've lost count. I think I've seen Billy 8 times. He'll be in the ATL together with Elton and I've seen that show twice.

  169. I could not believe the Today show's report on that this a.m. They showed with the blurred over screen what went on the air. The first instance was just the credits of a movie ... the second was an act that the blurred screen didn't hide too well.

Why? They almost should have shown it without cover ... there was little left to the imagination.

  171. Did anyone here F'baum say there was a recruit that Auburn was targeting very heavily behind the scenes and was a big time prospect for Bama. They said if it happens it would shock the recruiting world.

  172. gatiger,

Yep...this will be my fourth time to see him with Elton.

    Georgia Dome in 94
    Phillips in 2001 or 2002
    Nashville in 2001 or 2002

I get the Nashville & Phillips Arena years mixed up.

That is a great show. You definately get your money's worth.

  173. i always liked keith richard's quote about elton john: "anymore, he just sings songs about dead chicks."

  174. And that is very funny considering it comes from Keith Richards who looks dead.

    lol.

  175. FSJ I was in the house with you in the Dome and Arena. It was 2001, by the way. Had great seats for the Arena show. I'll likely be missing this one though.

  179. DoWhat...
I'll give that some credence if it happens, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I think the bum is trying to set up a HaHa moment for tomorrow, just to have another reason to praise Saban and crack on AU.

  180. Keith Richards has actually been dead for years. It's the Disney Animatronics that everyone has been seeing. Not surprisingly, his guitar playing has improved since his death.

    Referencing PMarsh article.

  187. It's not gonna happen, but wouldn't it be funny if at the news conference, Dre says "Excuse me while I whip this out," puts on an Auburn hat and signs the papers in front of everybody.
