The Daily Thread: Monday

Hey everyone. I have six days remaining in my Gannett-mandated furlough.

See Sunday's entry for more details.

Please feel free to discuss issues as usual in the comment section. I hate this it has come to this, but it has. I blame unsavory lending institutions.

Fight the power!

  3. not a single sentence in local papers today (or their on line web sites) re: Tommy Thigpen leaving UNC for Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  4. You all are nuts.

Thigpen is a good hire for Auburn. Sounds like he'll be adding more firepower to the team's recruiting arsenal.

Chizik et al. clearly will upgrade the talent level. Can they actually turn those players into a better team? We shall see.

    ReplyDelete
  5. THT, is college football covered at all in that area during college basketball season?I always figured the football coach at UNC feels like the basketball coach at AU.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Criminal - our fearless leader made us this way. You should meet him next week when he returns from exile.

I agree, I think Tommy Thigpen is an excellent hire. I think he can coach. We know he can recruit.

Silly paper up here so focused on basketball that they don't have any news about his departure.

    ReplyDelete
  7. UNC did one heck of a job in recruiting this season. I had no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  8. depressed - there was equal coverage of football/basketball the day after signing day. Essentially no football coverage before or since.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Happy President's Day Hotties!! Does anyone know if Jay's furlough will extend beyond the Lady's home game against UGA this Sunday?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'll try to get over what I perceive as a missed opportunity re: Bill Clark. Cowboy warned me...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Here's the mention or coach Thigpen online:

    Inside Carolina

    ReplyDelete
  12. gatiger - perhaps the Chiz can study lots of Bill Clark game film and steal a few tricks.

    ReplyDelete
  13. gatiger, I second that thought on Clark. Very happy with the coaches that were hired, but I was hoping Clark was in the mix also. Cowboy, apologies for doubting your view on Clark. You were dead-on.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thigpen did a great job of getting in-state talent to UNC, this is key because A) UNC has always had trouble retaining in-state talent over out-of-state schools, B) UNC had an issue a decent shot of losing lesser in-state talent to NCState which had been the strongest program in football until Wake Forest's little surge.

All of these hurdles in someway are similar to Auburn's. I hope he can help change that. Lolley was promoted to because of his Gadsden area connections...I guess Chiz wants to make inroads in area.

    ReplyDelete
  15. As I understand it, Jay will be covering the AU-UGA women's game on the 22nd.

    ReplyDelete
  16. nothing on Thigpen at Raleigh News and Observer, Durham Sun, or The Daily Tar Heel.
Can you imagine an AU or UA-T ass't leaving and not a single sentence about it at all?
People's priorities up here are all messed up ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would have like to see him (Clark) there as well, but he seemed to be shooting me straight. I will see him later this week and ask if he was ever contacted. Sounds like he must not have been in the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  18. yes Criminal, I seem to remember Jay GT saying something to that effect before heading to Elba.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Tarheel- Does UNC even acknowledge they have a football team with Basketball going on?

    ReplyDelete
  20. There was a time not that long ago that hiring/firing of position assistants wasn't that big of a deal.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jhag again ... guy cracks me up.

    ReplyDelete
  22. There was a time they didn't make 300K+ also.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'd like to make 300k.

    ReplyDelete
  24. good point tc and good morning jhag

    Eddie - no

did y'all see the story where coaches are having to take furloughs? I didn't realize Gannett's influence was so strong

    ReplyDelete
  25. Criminal, I'd settle for half that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dennis Erickson will lose almost 21K of his salary via furlough.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So Crim, you think Lebo bought another yr with this latest "W"? I tend to agree, but I would like to win 3 more this yr if possible.

I think MS ST is one of the better teams in the SEC. Varnado (sp?) was a monster on Sat. If his shot was on, he could have scored 30. AU didn't have a real answer for him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. as long as we're expressing income wishes..
I would like Mr Gates to give me $10,000,000 so I could live off the interest, even if it was in a checking account. I would just sit at home and blog all day, sort of like now, only rich.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think Lebo is safe now for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  30. you know blog secrets CT; nice work on the link. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  31. If anyone sees Mon, please ask her for an Oku update.

Also, any idea whne we'll know about Rollison's elig? I don't think he sees the field at AU next yr either way, but I'd really like to see him on campus and working with the team. It makes me nervous when they go to JUCO or prep school.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Will,
To avoid undue stress and disappointment, plan on learning Rollison's status a week after classes start fall semester. That would be typical behavior for NCAA Clearinghouse. If we learn earlier, it will just be a surprise, and hopefully a pleasant one.

    ReplyDelete
  33. oh, and I agree with you on the prep/JUCO concerns, a la the Ole Miss RB whose name I've already stricken from the book of life and replaced with that of DeAngelo Benton. Then there's Jermaine Johnson, who also needs to be stricken from the book.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Rollison already reported on his facebook that he would qualify.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks for the updates Michael and THT.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, if you read it on Al Gore's Intertubes, it HAS to be true. I find that to especially be the case where FB is concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anyone think AU men could make the NIT this yr? If they win 3 or 4 more games they could have a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks for the info CT. It will be good to see Jay in his natural habitat again. Especially during this anticipated battle for redemption. Do you think we will reach UT numbers for this game?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Rumors swirling that Oku should announce tomorrow, i sure hope so, take me out of my misery or make me happy.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Where are these rumors swirling, jhag?

AU/UGA women ... not Tennessee numbers, no.

I was surprised by how much trouble Auburn had at MSU yesterday. That was a close one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. SIAP, but the bio on Thigpen is intriquing:

    - Starred as an LB from '89-92
    - Picked in the 5th round of the 1993 NFL draft by an NFC team who had missed the playoffs the previous season
    - The team that drafted him made the playoffs as a wildcard in his rookie season, won their first round game but lost to a division winner in round 2
    - Began his coaching career at a 1-AA school
    - Returned to his alma mater to coach his former position a few years ago

Every one of the above facts is also true about James Willis.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What's the deal with the rumors on Thigpen having problems with fellow assistants at UNC?

I actually know Scott Fountain. He coached with Chiz at Iowa State and was the one coach Rhoades was going to retain. Rivals says he's going "to fill an off the field administrative position" and the Iowa State fans say he's going to be somehow tied to TE coaching. I bet some of the other LA Hotties know him too.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Make that 'intriguing'.

BTW, Thigpen was drafted by the Giants at #123. . .four picks after Willis was selected by the Packers.

    Freaky.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Freep if full of Freaky factoids. That's weird.

Monica- ok, you have my attention. Whence came said rumors? Or were you just trying to extend the parallel between Thigpen and Traitor?

    ReplyDelete
  45. FYI Scott Fountain HUGE Bama fan family

    ReplyDelete
  46. THT - Greg was reading me that information from an Al.com article and he's looking for it again so I can post the link.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thigpen coming to Auburn does not mirror Willis move to bama. If Thigpen left for NC State then I could see the traitor tag from UNC fans. That is what gets Willis dead in my book. If goes anywhere else but bama.

    ReplyDelete
  48. tc - having grown up near UNC, I don't think any Thigpen move, or even a UNC basketball ass't move, would elicit the response Willis achieved by his traitorous action. I think the closest would have been if Phil Ford (UNC hero and former ass't) had left to join Coach K's staff 8 miles thither. Of course, Phil Ford isn't a lowlife scum, so he didn't pull a Willis.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Will - I don't know anything about Oku. I've lumped him in that pile with Bryce Brown. As long as Brian Butler has his "mentor" claws in those fellas, I'd say there's no telling where they'll land, what they'll do or how long they'll last.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anonymous12:07 PM

Unsavory lending institutions are jeopardising my solvency.

Glad to see that the coaching staff is full and credible. I think Chiz said it something like...."now it is time to re-recruit our existing players". Continue the discipline that Tubs maintained, get buy-in from the players and employ new and intelligent offensive schemes.

Another very interesting Spring Camp coming up.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh heavens, I didn't realize Pastor Brian Butler was also David Oku's spiritual advisor. Should I make a tax deductible donation to the Holy Church of Potentialplayers?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I had no idea that Oku was involved in that same mess either. Bryce Brown just seems like a handful of problems to me, he's talented but could end up being a cancer on the team (T.O. like). I wish Oku would decide either way. The longer this takes, the more discouraged I get.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oku is in with Butler? vomit

Mon- I will be heading to the mountain state in a few days

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hoopie,

Actually, the new staff has increased discipline standards. Can't say all the players are excited about this, but they want to win and get to the next level.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think Chizik is introducing a whistle, ferrets, and military style training to the team similar to the manner John Kimble got control of his kindergarten class. Discipline indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  56. "It's not a tumor!"

    ReplyDelete
  57. Harrison - You decided on Snowshoe right?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Michael, which player do you think will come back with the "I'm not a policeman, I'm a princess!" excuse.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh well, Greg can't find the sentence he read about rumors of Thigpen/other UNC assistants not getting along. Sorry, no linkage. That's just how it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That's ok, Mon. I couldn't find it either.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I prefer the strict military discipline in Stripes because I like Manfred Mann... get down and give me 20 doo wah diddies

  62. If you use Turbo Tax here's a great discount for you. You can get your federal and state efiled for less than $50. I hope nobody out there is using something like H&R Block. There are several places to prepare your taxes yourself for free. You can also have someone else prepare your taxes for you at no cost at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). To locate the nearest VITA site, call 1-800-829-1040.

For the Turbo Tax discount click on this link and then click on Visitor Entry. You'll sign in Turbo Tax as you normally do and the discount will be applied when you pay.

  63. yes Mon. we willbe arriving in snowshoeon Thursday, after approx. 10 hours of driving

    ReplyDelete
  64. Harrison - I recommend taking your private plane for this trip.

  65. I traded it in for a helicopter, but it only hold 4people and we have 6 going. Plus I don't know how to fly

  68. Someone sent me the postings of a big bammer the other day. He kept referring to Tennessee as UTK. Does anyone else find this absolutely moronic? It's like Junior Samples making fun of Lulu for being fat.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I let this homeless guy do mine. I just give him a couple beers and a sandwich and we're even. I usually get back like 42,000 dollars. He'spretty good

  70. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Harrison, I would be careful if I were you. I too regularly used a homeless guy to do my taxes. But then one day I got bored and decided to follow this fella around for a few days. Well, it turns out the guy lived in a house! That $41,000 rebate I got for letting a homeless guy do my taxes would be in serious jeopardy if the IRS found out about it.

So I burned his house down. Problem solved.

    ReplyDelete
  72. you dodged a bullet there michael.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Shane Battier apparently delays long distance buzzer beater shots until after the horn sounds so they won't count against his FG percentage.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Wrong and shame on you, Peter.

VITA is NOT just for very low income people. Some VITA sites have no income limit. The only income limit associated with a VITA site are those for qualifying for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Some VITA sites are even strictly for Senior Citizens and are administered by AARP.

Turbo Tax is not for people who have a W-2 and nothing else. Turbo Tax is very user friendly (more so than the software used by the IRS tax preparers) and has a very, VERY Simple process of walking you through your estimated deductions and credits to tell you in advance if it's more advantageous for you to take your standard deduction or to itemize.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Harrison - good call on the decision to drive. Hope y'all have a great time.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Personally, I love me some TurboTax. 100% agree with Monica.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I got Turbo Tax confused with Turbo Lax before. The returns from Turbo Lax aren't monetary at all, although they are liquid.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Well let me just say that Turbotax is just like sex. You need to know what goes where and why.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I also hear the turnaround time from Turbo Lax is much lower than Turbo Tax.

    ReplyDelete
  81. yes, you get your "return" in minutes

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm the director of 11 VITA sites and as a volunteer tax preparer it's not your decision to turn away someone. If you're allowed to do so then your site is not being properly administered.

And you know what they say about someone who represents themselves in legal matters...

    ReplyDelete
  83. nah, ballin. just find an empty box and plug it in. its easy.

I hate the newspapers that have forced Jay G. into furlough!

I wish you people at The Advertiser could get with the f**king program and modernize the newspaper.

    Read more HERE.

    ReplyDelete
  86. speaking of taxes, does anybody want to do mine for free? .....anyone? .....anybody?

    ReplyDelete
  87. It looks like our strategy for recruiting the state of Alabama is like playing a great running team...put 8 in the box!

Luper said he plans to have seven assistants recruit Alabama (8 w/Chiz), five recruit Georgia and three or four recruit Florida. Auburn will also continue to recruit Texas and Oklahoma, and maybe up the East Coast, too. Obviously, coaches will have more than one area.

    Luper on Recruiting

He also said that the current RB Brandon Jacobs reminds him of the previous RB Brandon Jacobs!! I'm glad they are aiming to keep him at that position instead of LB.

    ReplyDelete
  88. great quotes in that article from both guys. I think Rocker is going to eventually have some great DL's at Auburn

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yes, all good indeed, but what does he have to say about HABOTN Puppet Hour?

    ReplyDelete
  90. I'm sure he'd be in favor of its execution, just like John McKay.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Mrs THT just called and says we've got to completely clean the house because a realtor is bringing someone over TOMORROW who may want to buy it. What should I do?

Oh, BTW, our house isn't for sale!

    ReplyDelete
  92. We filed 10 days ago with Turbo Tax.

Large sum of money added into our account TODAY. I'm impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I bet Jay hates that he missed the Luper and Rocker interviews today.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Poop on the kitchen floor. That'll make them leave real fast. Unless you actually want to sell the house. In that case, clean up any poop that might be on any floor.

And you can't execute Puppet Hour. It is an ideal, like freedom. You can't kill that off.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I certainly hate that JayGT missed today's interviews. For starters, the write-up would have been awesome (no offense to CG who does a good job). More importantly, I would have been spared the risk of scrolling to far and seeing the typical al.com garbage comments.

    ReplyDelete
  96. YIKES! SHE'S HOME. BYE!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Also, he would have gotten paid for it. F'n newspapers.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I would much rather have JGT's perspective on the interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Jay knows what the peoples want, that's fo sure.

    ReplyDelete
  100. why doesn't Jay post on here as somebody else like a puppet would do

    ReplyDelete
  101. I think he probably does that. I am thinking either Kristina or fsj is Jay.

    ReplyDelete
  102. i used topost in full clown makeup, but nobody seemed to care so i stopped. now i post in adult diapers, for obvious reasons

    ReplyDelete

    I told ya so Dad!

    ReplyDelete
  109. OK peter - you're always right & I'm always wrong. How's that?

All I was trying to do was offer the hotties a Turbotax discount and other possible resources for tax help.

I read CCL's recruiting strategy comments. Sounds good and I'm sure that will excite the internet fans, but why give out those kind of details to CN$. Why not be more vague with the fans(and thus CN$) to make him use up resources to figger this stuff out?

I appreciate coaches wanting to provide details to the insatiable fans in order to gain buy-in, but at some point soon, team privacy needs to rule.

  112. I am pretty sure Harrison is always right, actually. Let him be your judge.

Harrison, do you have a verdict?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Mcheila, how did it come down to me or faker being Jay G? I'm not saying youre wrong...just asking...

    ReplyDelete
  114. i'm not real sure what i'm judging, but my gut feeling is that no one really paid much attention to either one's argument.

    CASE DISMISSED!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Harrison - Is it true what they say about judges and their robes?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Harrison, that was the worst ruling ever. You didn't even decide anything, you just made a comment. What kind of crap judge are you? Boy, was I wrong to appoint you judge.

Kristeena, it is pretty obvious why I say the things I say.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Hoopie,

Not sure I understand what difference it makes if you, I or Nick Saban know what areas our coaches are recruiting. I doubt their recruiting strategies have anything to do with who they are going up against.

Also, if they did need that info, they probably already got it from James Willis.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Look Harrison, I am really sorry about that last post. I just get all upset when things don't go the way I expect them too. I am sorry for being so........... wait for it...... judgmental!!! wakka wakka wakka!

    ReplyDelete
  119. mikhail, did you watch the Anna Nicole proceeding when she died? I don't even remember what the issue was, but I'll never forget that judge...not sure he ruled on anything either, but it was worth watching online at work.

  125. Wow, lots of new names here...ausome! (Bowden-era slogan, sorry if it brings back bad memories). I haven't posted lately because frankly, I have not been able to come up with any comments that would improve the HABOTN content (and I will be father to child #2 Thursday at the latest-congrats Michael, I will soon be sharing your sleepless nights). Thanks Jay for not taking me off the "notable newcomers" list. Jay's furlough has made me ponder my love of Auburn football. Not how much I love it, but how important is it to me. Given the current state of our economy, I have realized it is not really important at all. Seriously, I now really don't care about the whims of 17 and 18 year old kids, nor how they perform on the field. All I know is that Jay and millions of others just like him are (by no choice nor fault of their own) are sitting at home wondering about their future and the future of their families...and I am about to bring a new daughter into this mess....The whole thing just really sucks. Hopefully all this will work out for Jay and the rest of us. The HABOTN is truly a great place for Auburn people to break bread together, and while I don't know about the rest of you, I for one would gladly pay for the priveledge (hint at a possible new income stream Jay G., if for nothing else to offset that lost from these stinking "furloughs").

    ReplyDelete

Jim/Scranton.....Since Traitor has been gone for a month or two, I'm guessing he doesn't know the recruiting alignmentsnow that the coaching staff is full. CN$,et all will eventually be able to know who-what-where, but why make it easy.

CN$ hired Willis(handling LA area for AU) to replace his recruiter that had been handling LA. There is a lot of spin associated with recruiting....and CN$ is one of the more intense at it....the more you know your opponent, the easier to develop spin.

Fans aren't "owed" explanations of strategies, etc. and should feel honored when coaches reveal such. Most top coaches don't give out details. CN$ doesn't give out any details. Mark Richt hardly does any more...he has learned better.

I'm not sayng this was a horrible mistake. I'm saying that the coach/fan courtship should be over and the coaches need to start holding closer to the vest.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I love how FCJW is now just "Traitor."

``We're Auburn, and we've got something to stand for.''

    Heck yeah we do!

    ReplyDelete
  135. Not that its suprising, but I think this is telling of the coaching staff's worries about the rotation this year:

"Pitching wise, as a coach, sometimes you feel good because you know who your starters are, but then you go three weeks into the season, and all of a sudden, things change drastically."

G'mornin Hotties. So is today the day that Oku and his mentor/benefits advisor finally conclude negotiations and reveal the winner?

Mr. Oku, I apologize for the snide remarks. We realize that you are 17-18 and this decision seems monumental to you. In reality...you probably are not experienced enough to make a perfect decision and after a while even the advisors don't help anymore. Just go with your gut. My gut says that AUBURN is a great school with great coaches, students, fans and facilities...hey....I want to go to school there...oh..uh.....I already graduated from AU. Mr. Oku
    come join the Auburn Family.

How long before the NCAA/Presidents get together and impose a mandatory late signing date?

    ReplyDelete
  155. As bad as everything was last year, Auburn still ranked 10th nationally in attendance at football games. Amazing.

Granted, I'm pretty sure that's based on Ticket Sales, not butts in seats.

  157. This is an old article about Lolley:

Seems we got a military theme going with some of our coaches.

  161. Good morning ladies and gentlemen!

    ReplyDelete
  162. Kathy, if the article does, in fact, communicate that he is holding out longer, than I'm to the point where I don't want this kid coming to Auburn. I mean everyone has a deadline to make a decision, why is he any different?

    ReplyDelete
  163. And forgive us our trespasses because we did some really bad stuff plotting against UAT but we think it's OK because UAT is evil. Just in case, we'd like some forgiveness.

  181. Facebook is so stalkery. I sent Coach Thigpen a War Eagle message the other night and I became FB friends with his wife. She wants me to fill her in on living in Auburn. I'm not sure what to tell her. I'm afraid I'd scare them into staying in Chapel Hill.

Here's article in today's local paper about Thigpen and Lovett
