The Daily Thread: Tuesday

Hey everyone. I have five days remaining in my Gannett-mandated furlough.

See Sunday's entry for more details.

Please feel free to discuss issues as usual in the comment section. I hate this it has come to this, but it has. I blame shady politicians. They knew we were headed down a slippery slope, yet they did nothing to stop it.

Fight the power!

I guess 200 posts really did trip the new thread machine.

  3. Tell ya what, that JGT clearly has a problem with going over 200 posts. Even when he's on furlogh he finds a way to admonish us. . .

  4. It should have been me. I was ready at 10:00.

To continue something Will asked in the earlier thread:

There is a way to filter meaningless information. Cut people who annoy you. I've done it. They don't seem to mind.

Well, one guy tried to re-friend me and I rejected him. So that's that.

Mon - Thanks for the Bday Wishes!!

  8. Ditto what, Criminal Type said. The only people who see your information are people you have added to your circle of friends.

Eddie - Your baby girl is growing up so fast! Love the new pics of them sitting in the chair together. Also, you're looking great! Those 4:30 gym trips are paying off.

AU1 - Happy Birthday from Monica and Dirty.

  9. What an exciting day.... actually, just boring work. Look forward to when real news starts flowing back in :)!!!!!!!

  10. wow - that's weird! lol you get the wishes times two

Aren't you supposed to be in a conference room?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anonymous12:02 PM

Thank you both!! Ok, back to the flipping conference room. The only positive is that I am out while Jay is out.

    What up Criminal!!

    Ok Out!

    Mon - Yes, lunch break!

    Ok really out. Cya!

I have a list of 33 friend requests pending. I can't decide who they are, why they'd want to be my "friend", why I'd want to be their "friend" or all of the above.

  16. Hey, as promised all of my posts will have "substance".... none of this frivolous "one" stuff for me anymore..

OK - what are the chances of the mens team being a cinderella story at the SEC tourny?? 100-1 , 1000-1...

who makin the odds...and whose placin the bets.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dear Leader, I was asking the same thing the other day, only I was aiming for an NIT bid.

I think if we can win three more games and maybe win one or two in the SEC tournament, we might get a shot at NIT.

Criminal Type, you a b-ball fan?

    Is Jay G here?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Criminal - I've not stalked you yet.

Dear Leader - million to one.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So are you on the hatin' DEjr train after Daytona? I think NASCAR is slowly turning into professional wrasslin'. Everything seems scripted to me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Luv - I received no such email from you.

Named after the last great horse from Calumet Farms ... a once-proud enterprise that fell apart during the late 1980s.

My racing silks are those of Overbrook Farm, of which I have a familial connection.

    Profile: Just messin' around.

Landlocked and loaded is pretty funny.

  26. Criminal - last I heard, Jay GT was on Elba. Haven't seen or heard a peep out of him since last weekend. Furlough/exile sucks.

  28. Speaking of Jay G. I have a friend who met Mrs. Jay G at the AU/ UAT women's b-ball game. My friend was very complimentary of Mr. Jay G...said she's good people. Apparently Jay outkicked his coverage on that one (j/k). If any of you happen to see Mr. Jay G. Tate panhandling in Montgomery, maybe pass on the message.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous12:15 PM

Dangit. I'll have to resend it when I get home. I should have known you hadn't received it because I KNOW you have responded to that one!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous12:16 PM

Furlough does suck. I did a little research on this ... and it's not the Advertiser's fault.

It's his parent company, which requires local papers to give a TON of money to "corporate" before handling their own needs. A lot of that cash goes to frivolous or money-losing enterprises that full under the parent company's umbrella.

So now the money's gone and the parent company has to "find money" through other means.

    The more you know ...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous12:17 PM

    would have, that is

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous12:18 PM

I have met Wifey a few times and she's a keeper FO SHO.

I hope Jay doesn't mind me saying that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous12:18 PM

Criminal Type, couldn't the same be said for a lot of companies these days?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous12:19 PM

Oh sure. It's a common malady.

Why his parent company is in such dire straits (relative to other similar corporations) is The Big Question.

    Enough of that.

    When does spring football start?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Luv, I've been admiring your new html tagging skills. Very nice.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous12:21 PM

Wait until she drops a "table" tag on us. It'll be BANANAS.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anyone project any surprises this spring...bad or good? Does Fannin learn to read blitzes? Which D lineman steps up? Does Tommy Trott still have Johnny Tremaine syndrome? Who will step up and impress the new staff?

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's just crazy talk right there.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous12:32 PM

I don't see how Fannin is going to be a front-line guy with all these other guys around.

If he can't manage to hold off McCalebb and Tate this season, which I consider unlikely, then he'll have Aycock and B. Jacobs and perhaps D. Oku as well.

    Fannin just isn't that good.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm getting way behind at work. One of the 2 computers essential for getting work done has crashed. Fortunately, HABOTN is on the working computer (Yea!). Unfortunately, I have to go to another room frequently until both computers are up (boo!)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't see Jacobs being a threat this yr, he'll most likely redshirt. Tate is just sooooo sloooooow. After watching the GMAC bowl I think Fannin has a role in this offense. Not a premier guy, but he will get some touches. I think PPL and Ont McCalleb will do well. Question is, where does E. Smith fit in? I think he is the misfit here.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous12:35 PM

Monica, I have YOU to thank!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Aycock is a wild card, I don't know anything about him.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous12:37 PM

CT, I don't even know what a "table" tag is.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anonymous12:37 PM

    I also don't understand E. Smith's role.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Criminal, how dare you dismiss the immortal talents of Super Mario??!!

if JG was here you would surely be BANHAMMERED for such blasphemy!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. As one who worked in the corporate world before softly landing in the service of the people, I presume the Gannettoids send in a truck every week to pick up the Advertiser's love offering. They're asking for more and more and it's likely not there.

The hope here -- for one that wants a viable paper in the Gump -- is that a positive local interest purchases it for a song. I'm afraid that will never happen.

    ReplyDelete
  48. eric smith's role will be to practice and never play in a game

    ReplyDelete
  49. E.Smith's role will be to text game plans to Traitor.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I must agree with the Criminal. Fannin hasn't blown my skirt up yet.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If E. Smith lost a few lbs maybe he would increase his speed. Then Bramlett could say..."Eric Smith fumbled the handoff, but he was running really fast when he did it!"

    ReplyDelete
  52. And I was just kidding about E. Smith's role. I think he'll be on the field for a dozen or so snaps/game.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I like Fannin, but I don't think he is a go to guy. He was the only guy on the field last yr that could take it the distance. We didn't even have WRs that could outrun opposing defenders.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I thought Swinton was one of the fastest guys on the field. He could run away from anything, even passes thrwon his way

    ReplyDelete
  55. Fannin would be perfect for a grind it out offense (if he didn't hang the ball out ready to fumble at any time). The guy is a load to take down and has the ability to break the big one. He would be pretty special if he got the ball 20 times a game (once again, without fumbling).

I don't know if he will do much of anything in the spread offense, though. He's not really a "make a guy miss" runner.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sen. Jet has instituted the AU Patriot Act -- all players, coaches, staff, GAs, administrators, their spouses, parents and children have all their means of communications "monitored" for the sake of AU security.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I hope Malz points our RB's shoulders toward the goal line instead of the sideline like Franklin.

  59. Fannin will not have a t-shirt made in his honor this year at Tiger Tailgate headquarters. That statement alone should let most of you know my opinion of Fannin. And no, I will not go out with him or have his babies.

    ReplyDelete
  60. What about just meeting him for drinks...you know as friends?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Only if he buys, Will.

    ReplyDelete
  62. And the bar has to be Fat Daddy's or the Duck!

    ReplyDelete
  63. A-Rod is crying on my TV right now.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Wario, Wario, wherefore art thou Wario?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I hope having a top-notch OC and a coach who will let him do his thing will answer questions we all have about certain players. Kodi Burns, Mario Fannin, Tommy Trott, Terrel Zachrey were all highly thought of coming into AU. The results have been mixed at best. In Gus We Trust.

    ReplyDelete
  66. A-Rod is hilarious

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anonymous1:02 PM

    CRYING???!!! Why is he crying???

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anonymous1:04 PM

I just heard the worst lyrics ever:

    "My girlfriend's a d**k magnet.."

    That's how this gem begins.

  75. No Madonna there with A-Rod?

    ReplyDelete
  77. My buddies back home love to go duck hunting. Maybe that guy's girlfriend is a "duck magnet".

    ReplyDelete
  78. They keep showing pictures of Madonna on screen and referencing her quotes about ARod, but for some reason ESPN spells her name...

    Thanks, Luv.

I'd say the same thing to Madonna, but SHE ALREADY HAS.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Anyone have an opinion of Hunter Morris as the closer? If this happens, and he is successful in that role, has there ever been another situation when a star DH was also the star Closer?

Will, why is he giving a press conference? Does he really think anyone cares what he has to say? It's all lies anyway.

    ReplyDelete

    Luv,

I choose to blame Saban. Not because he is responsible directly, but his presence at Bammer is screwing up the entire sports world!

  90. Intervention is a great show. especially the heroin addicts. that stuff must be amazing

    ReplyDelete
  91. Please forgive my grammar....I think I'm drunk.

Now ARod's bragging about how much he could bench press in High School.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I hate that show intervention. Its misserable to watch people in such desperate situations get exploited for the viewing pleasure of the 10 people that tune into A&E.

From the previous thread, I like the orange polos, and don't understand what the problem is with them.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Peter thanks for the arena pics...

Did you notice that the seats have no cup holders??? Hopefully they are on the back as i hate to put my burbon on the floor.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Doesn't Gannett own USA Today? I thought USA Today was priced high at $1.00, but then I saw local papers charging .75 per copy. Not good times for the newspaper industry(or any other industry for that matter).

    ReplyDelete
  95. how are they exploited? they get an offer of free help. how many drug addicts get that offer?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Is anyone else crying their eyes out right now like me? This A-rod stuff is emotional. I am crying more right now than the time I lost my disk magnet. It was a present from my late grandfather that allowed me to magnetically bond floppy disks to my refrigerator. It was outdated, but I loved it.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I did not notice, but you should write a letter and remind them that cupholders are good.

Will our dear leader, Jay G, be doing any baseball coverage on Sunday, or only women's basketball? I swear I'll keep asking this question until someone tells me the answer that I don't want to hear, which is "The games overlap, and he's already said he's covering one the few remaining women's bball home games, so there will be no baseball coverage. Hit up PM, he likes Baseball."

    ReplyDelete
  98. You're right, Harrison. I still don't like it. I don't like watching sick children on tv, either.

    ReplyDelete
  99. men's baseball < women's basketball in my care-o-meter right now. That being said, they both barely register.

    ReplyDelete
  100. hey Peter
I am sooo ready for college baseball to start... My son's HS team started yesterday and both JV and Varsity won... SOn had 9 k's, 4 infield pops and only 3 hits through 5 innings... gotta love baseball..

as for Morris not sure but if he plays DH then goes into pitch what is rule on that???

    ReplyDelete
  101. what does register on michael's seismograph?

    ReplyDelete
  102. My wife made a pie a couple of days ago. It was really good. It charted quite high on the care-o-meter.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I love baseball in person, but not on the tele.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I think I may need an online spades intervention soon.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Junks,

I'm not sure I've ever seen a situation where that would happen. In the pro's the DH surely would never pitch (and vice versa), and when I played HS ball, the pitchers batted (not sure if its the same now). I have no idea of the college ruling on such a situation. All I know is that he's a DH (or maybe 1B), and they've discussed putting him in the closer role. Surely, they don't want to lose his bat, though.

    ReplyDelete
  106. i'd rather have pie than watch baseball any day

    ReplyDelete
  107. Im excited about mario's potential....sorry?

    ReplyDelete
  108. are you in school?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Apology accepted.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think pie may be more difficult than baseball, as I learned to play baseball long before I learned to cook pie, but I'm not sure it's better.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Other things this week higher on my care-o-meter than Auburn baseball:

    - The economy
    - What to eat for lunch yesterday (ended up going with Bandito Burrito)
    - The weather
    - My job
    - whether to get an evening or morning shower
    - What shoe/belt combo to wear to work today
    - Whales
    - The charged/uncharged status of my cell phone
    - Bugs eating my plants
    - Saved by the Bell reruns

    ReplyDelete
  112. Jay GT blames "shady politicians."
    There's another type?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Anonymous2:01 PM

    Monica, you should have mail.

    ReplyDelete
  114. ok Peter here are the rules for DH playing a position after being DH...

The designated hitter may not play a field position and he may only be replaced by another player not currently in the lineup. However, the designated hitter may change positions to become a position player at any point during the game; if he does so, his team forfeits the role of the designated hitter and the pitcher, another player, or a pinch hitter must bat in the newly-opened spot in the batting order. The designated hitter could also become the pitcher, in which case the pitcher or a pinch hitter must hit when that spot in the batting order comes up again. Likewise, if a pinch-hitter bats for some other player (such as, hypothetically, the first baseman) and then remains in the game as the pitcher, the team would forfeit the use of the DH for the remainder of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I agree baseball on TV is very hard to watch.. only way to truly enjoy baseball is going to the game

    ReplyDelete
  116. Anonymous2:07 PM

Now ARod's bragging about how much he could bench press in High School.

    Will, you are kidding, right??

    ReplyDelete
  117. A-Rod then yelled, "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!"

    ReplyDelete
  118. Arod is only about Arod

    ReplyDelete
  119. I heard he lifted 100 pounds right up over his head

    ReplyDelete
  120. Guys I dont know about this 'Criminal Type' dude. He seems suspect! Doubting the greatness of Wario (even if said greatness is unfounded) is unlawful around these parts. If Jay were here, he'd handle this!

  121. Anonymous2:36 PM

Keep hatin. Jay doesn't have the cojones to drop the BANHAMMER on my head. He loves Calumet Farms.

My guess is that Jay will not be covering baseball because the third-ranked women's team is significantly more important at this stage. If Auburn baseball can't sweep Elon and look good doing it, the team deserves almost no coverage anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Elon sounds like it should be the name of an elf in Lord of the Rings.

    ReplyDelete
  123. or the 5th ghostbuster

    ReplyDelete
  124. Cool. So Hunter Morris DH's all game, then closes the game out on the mound and at the plate.

I listen to baseball on the radio. Yes, live is the best, but I don't mind catching it this way.

    ReplyDelete
  125. CT you obviously dont know Jay G! He's a BAD MUTHA...shut yo mouth! He'd BANHAMMER Jenna Fischer if she got outta line on the HABOTN.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Back to men's hoops ... And why not to get too excited about the NIT .. The rule that guarantees conference champions compresses the field -- that makes the committee look even more closely for programs that will draw a crowd. That ain't us. It will take some heavy lifting to get there. Really need to win the ones we should, plus beat LSU @ home.

    ReplyDelete
  127. oh no you didn't just mention Jenna Fischer and BANHAMMER in the same sentence?! this may get ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  128. so you're telling me there's a chance...

    ReplyDelete
  129. Criminal Type is probably a jockey, which means he's a little fella. So some of you big boys need to go out and kick his jockey hind quarters.

    ReplyDelete
  130. OK guys I'm making another plea for a unified HOTTIE showing of support for our Women Tigers this Sunday as they face UGA @ 2pm. It would be great to have as many hotties in the stands as possible. Who's with me??

    ReplyDelete
  135. What is all this "Banhammer for negative Mario talk" business about? Jay G has never been a huge Mario lover or anything. I hate to misrepresent him since he is obviously not actively involved in the blog this week, but he has definitely been pretty even headed on Mario expectations (moreso than most fans have been).

And even if he was a Mariophile, Jay G allows plenty of room for people's opinions on the team, so, you know, yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Michael,

    "Why so serious?"

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  137. Wasn't meant to be particularly serious... just not particularly funny either. But I can only take so many, "Ohhh, if Jay G were here, this and that and this and that!" before I give my opinion. I mean, I guess it was serious, but not like a Monica/Frankenbummer tax fight or anything.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Finally! More news on the BC coaching situation! The ex-head coach speaks:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3913554&campaign=rss&source=NCFHeadlines

So anyone want to talk about it?

    ReplyDelete
  139. nothing gets people angrier than a good ol' fashioned tax debate!

What happened at BC. I never heard about it?

    ReplyDelete
  140. i'd rather talk about a real sport.. BEER PONG!!!!! I think they should make this a official college sport..

    ReplyDelete
  141. we never played beer pong in college. it just came out of nowhere right after i graduated. I am really good at ping pong and drinking beer. So obviuosly I would be awesome at beer pong

    ReplyDelete
  142. Scottie - If Luv had not taken those photos herself I would have thought they were photoshopped too.

  148. Senator, I have prepared an 1100 page document on the subject, but you are a senator and thus don't have time to read it. Let me boil down the issue for you (just trust me. don't worry about the 1100 page document):

    1. Is it alright for a head coach at the college level to actively pursue other jobs?
    2. Does such pursuit constitute a betrayal by the coach?
    3. In what ways is moving from college coaching to the NFL different from moving from a coordinator position to head coach?
    4. Was either side morally wrong?

And Jet, all the League of Puppets cares about is making sure you bite your own fingers off. That is why they are considered evil.

    ReplyDelete

Let me be perfectly clear, from the caves of Pakistan to the shores of Guantanamo Bay, we will win the War on Puppets.

The only thing we have to fear is another coach defecting to UAT.

Ask not what Gene Chizik can do for you, but what you can do for Gene Chizik to help win championships.

Mr. Saban, tear down your evil Red Elephant Club.

Read my lips: I hate UAT.

I don't have relations with that blog -- HABOTN.

    Mission Accomplished!

    Sincerely,

    Sen. Jet Jetarsky

Jet...what a nice segue into the nearing Puppet Hour.

Can the puppets discuss the BC coach situation succinctly?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Mdaniel ... I held a special election last week ... and if we get to stimulus crazy, I might have to form my exploratory committee for 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  154. You can't listen to puppets. They lie, persuade and cheat you into believing they are right. That leads to fingers being bitten off

  155. I was recently called a "Kool-Aid" drinker. Is this a bad thing? I am an unabashed Auburn fan. From my perspective, it's always sunny on the Plains. I'm a fan, not a (supposedly unbiased) sportswriter. Forget objectivity, I love Auburn!!!!

    What's all this BC stuff?

    (lighting fuse and walking away.)

    ReplyDelete
  157. Congrats on your election. Do you have any other jobs to sell loke Bogdonavich?

  158. Anyone seen our 2/12/2009 depth chart on Rivals? I'm sure this is just speculation but it's kinda interesting.

FB John Douglas is now listed as a 3rd string WR. Andre Wadley who was pretty sick for most of last season is listed as a 3rd string DT. (note: Nick Fairley is not listed so I'm sure that will change). Da'Shaun Barnes who never saw the field last year is listed as a 2nd string LB behind Eltoro Freeman.

  160. BigCat, ol and dl depth looks to be a concern.

  161. One of our Hotties is doing Relay for Life. Read his story and support him here: Fight Cancer!

  162. I have been a kool-aid drinker since I was young. And there is one thing I know for sure: it is hard to get that kool-aid stain off the wooden spoon without the assistance of a dish washer.

This may not be the same kool-aid talked about here, but I am not much for metaphors and similes and such. I guess you could say I am as uninterested in similes as a person who is not interested in similes.

  163. After re-reading Jay G's intro, I am highly offended, blaming his plight on shady politicians.

Remember Thomas Jefferson's words: "The tree of liberty is refreshing, thanks to shady politicians."

  164. i thought the green kool-aid was super-underrated and grap is super over-rated. Strawberry is just right

  166. strawberry = best kool-aid
    black cherry = second best
    grape = also ran
BC Coaching situation = a conundrum for our times which highlights some of the most basic assumptions we make about human nature and the football programs we follow
green = green???? who drinks green kool-aid??

    ReplyDelete
  167. On Facebook, it says I am I fan of Kool Aid...Oh Yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  168. facebook is rarely wrong about that sort of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  169. After we end the war on puppets, can we get facebook thrown off the internets forever? I think my wife thinks she married Facebook and not me

    ReplyDelete
  170. Anonymous4:24 PM

Sorry, Harrison, I'll stop messaging so often.

    ReplyDelete
  171. They passed an amendment that made it illegal to marry someone of the same sex, or a turtle, or facebook, so I don't know what the heck your wife is thinking, Harrison. No offense, bu she might be a little slow when it comes to amendments.

  172. i always wondered why she said she can't vote and hides all of our alcohol.

  178. Mike Leach declines 12.7 million offer...yikes where is he planning on going?

    ReplyDelete
  179. Will Brad Lester get drafted?

    ReplyDelete
  180. Jhag, unless he shows up big at the combine, don't see it. He had an unimpressive season to me. His timing on leaving for the NFL didn't make much sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  181. jhag, he never had a 100 yard rushing game at Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Wake, he is a senior.

    ReplyDelete
  183. OK, Am I missing the BIG picture or am I just catching on that Criminal Type is our unemployed (1 Week) leader?
If i'm out of the loop on this please let me know. I just got such a kick out of our oyster-fisherman.

Leach is under contract for 2 more seasons at $2.6 mil/year. The new contract offer is for around the same amount/year and includes a provision that Leach must get approval before interviewing for another job. Leach countered at $4.4 mil/yr.

Leach says he is under contract for another 2 years and that is just fine with him.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Mdaniel, you are way off base. I know Criminal Type and he is definitely no Jay G. Tate.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Criminal Type can't hold Jay Tayes jock yeah right mcdainiel

    ReplyDelete
  187. J-Z,

I hate to say it but I think you're wrong. Have you noticed that he posts more for free than he does getting paid!
I think we need to call in Senator Jet for an investigation of this blantant non-abuse of Ganette resources.

    ReplyDelete
  188. I have to laugh that he loves the hotties this much.
    Back at ya JGT.

    ReplyDelete
  189. I spoke with Jay GT before the exile and he specifically stated that Jay G Tate would not be posting this week. Besides, Criminal's posts so lack the keen insight and wit of Jay GT.
(No offense intended CT, my posts are even weaker)
