From the Southeastern Conference office:
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 5, 2009) – Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has issued a public reprimand to University of Tennessee head football coach Lane Kiffin for his public comments made earlier today.
"Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics," Slive said. "SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players.”
The phone call to which Coach Kiffin referred to in his public comments is not a violation of SEC or NCAA rules. We expect our coaches to have an understanding and knowledge of conference and NCAA rules.”
SO WHY IS THE SEC HOPPIN' MAD?
Here is a story outlining why the SEC is unhappy.
WVLT-TV reported that Kiffin told a group of fans at a signing day breakfast celebration Thursday morning that Meyer phoned (prospect Nu'Keese) Richardson while the recruit was making his official visit to Tennessee recently.
"I'm gonna turn Florida in right here in front of you," Kiffin said, according to WVLT-TV. "While Nu'Keese was on campus, his phone kept ringing. One of the coaches says, 'who's that?' And he said, 'Urban Meyer.'"
Richardson, a Pahokee, Fla., native, signed with the Volunteers on Tuesday, despite having indicated he would sign with the Gators.
Kiffin told the crowd, "I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn't get him."

ReplyDeletewoohoo again
ReplyDeleteMy Fave thing about the Coach O song was when Q. Groves got accused of singing it after sacking the Ole Miss QB in '06
ReplyDeletedang. missed it by that much.
ReplyDeletealways lurking
ReplyDeleteCoach O is a trip..
ReplyDeleteWIld Boyz!!!!!!
Yeah Emmett that was classic...
ReplyDeleteNow my 4 year old is running around singing it and made me play it twice on you tube...
Oh and Kiffin is a baby...
Lane Kiffin is the Brick Tamland of the SEC..... "I Love Lamp"
ReplyDeleteI killed a guy with a trident
ReplyDeleteYou might wanna go away for awhile.
ReplyDeleteWhat did kiffin say?
ReplyDeletedo you want to come to the pants party?
ReplyDeleteHelps the David Oku watch :)
ReplyDeleteI mean, if Kiffin said something like Saban is an a-hole, does that violate SEC rules? Do they distinguish between criticism and fact?
ReplyDeleteMaybe Lane will ask Layla to ease his troubled mind.
ReplyDeleteSteve... I believe lawyers will argue that truth is an absolute defense.
ReplyDeleteKiffin/Brick
ReplyDeleteI was just looking back at past recruiting rankings and noticed Saban and Chiz were virtually even for their first class. No doubt Saban has taken off or paid out like a slot machine since then and it will be interesting to see how Chiz does. We had the number 7 ranked class that year although several are not listed on the depth chart now.
ReplyDeleteI can almost see Slive sitting there writing up that statement muttering to himself, "What a frickin' moron!"
ReplyDeleteIn that same vain, I can see Kiffin sitting in his office sputtering through tears and snot bubbles, "But, daddy, I thoguht...". (Monte interrupts) "Oh shut the eff up you whiny momma's boy. Learn the dang rules, Nancy!"
The SEC has a Code Of Ethics?
ReplyDeleteWow, I just read a bit of what Kiffin said and I would like to rise to his defense. He may be a moron, but he is one of the highest paid morons in the nation.
ReplyDeleteSteve,
ReplyDeleteThat goes in with my line of thinking. If you're going to be a moron, be well paid for your efforts.
I think the code of ethics paraphrased = Keep down home cuz...
ReplyDeleteHow embarrassing for Tennessee. I would be seriously pissed if the Chiz did something like that. Of course, if he gave Saban a shot to the ribs during the handshake at the end of the coming Iron Bowl, I would be more understanding.
ReplyDeleteThe SEC code of ethics manual is a paint by numbers book.
ReplyDeleteApparently, Kiffin was also calling recruits (Marsalis Teague) the night before signing day. From what I understand, Feb 2-5 was a dead period when coaches couldn't contact recruits.
ReplyDeleteThat's a conduct violation and a recruit violation within 24 hours. At this rate, he'll have UT on probation before he coaches a game. What an idiot.
Kiffin needs to wise up. The proper way to handle a situation like this is to find a grad assistant and have him say it to a reporter. Then when Florida responds, you say that you are taking appropriate measures to ensure it doesn't happen again.
ReplyDeleteA shot to the ribs? Is that like a kick to the shins for most normal size people?
ReplyDeleteHad a bammer call me today and say "#1 again". I told him Saban is floating some cash, and he said, "If you ain't cheatin', you at tryin'!"
ReplyDeleteThus, the bammer code of ethics.
Just read the story ... I'm glad for the folks in ObKnoxville.
ReplyDeleteEmmett,
ReplyDeleteThat background on your blog is Reaaalllly annoying.
By the way, I was IN the Kopper Kettle when it blew up. Lucky for me, I was meeting my Knights of the Round Table club and I was wearing a suit of armour.
I like the photo of old downtown
ReplyDeleteThe photo is fine, it is just really hard to read the blog with that dark background and your see-through articles.
ReplyDeleteNot hatin on you, just trying to offer some war eagle advice.
Fortunately my suit of armor was undamaged in the explosion. I am wearing it now.
I added background on the original thread for peeps who haven't been following this saga today.
ReplyDeleteALSO: Thanks to Dear Leader for my cooking regalia. Very nice.
PeterF - as pointed out to me by our NCAA expert, Omnica:
ReplyDeleteDead period - not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on- or off-campus or permit official or unofficial visits.
i.e. they can talk on the phone all they want
Unlimited calls
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that Nu'Keese will get knocked on his Nu'Keester by the Gators with regularity and extreme prejudice.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what kind of coach Kiffin will be, but this looks to be an entertaining ride. With a cocky HC and loud-mouth assistant(Orgeron) who love to talk, things could get mighty interesting in Knoxville. Not sure if that means good or bad but definitely not boring. He may not be willing to just turn things over to the SEC office and be quiet about it. Which may be a good thing.
ReplyDeleteKiffin has apparently apologized....
ReplyDeleteKiffin
Kiffin did not write his apology...Its not in Crayon on the back of a Chuck-E-Cheese Napkin
ReplyDeleteWas Monte standing behind him with his ear twisted while he apologized, FSJ?
ReplyDeleteKIFFIN bullied poor Urban
ReplyDeleteMaybe Kiffen's accusation of UM cheating had nothing to do with a cell phone call.
ReplyDeleteKiffin won't be feeling so hot when Florida beats them by 30 next year.
ReplyDeleteIs it me...or has Kiffin really kicked up a hornet's nest since his hiring at TN? At least wait until you have won a couple of games!!! Funny!!!
ReplyDeleteSurely Urban Meyer will overlook these comments. He's a classy guy and will just brush these aside. Not vengeful at all. He would never run up the score on an opponent...wait...nevermind.
ReplyDeleteDoc HABOTN...technical question here. Would it be possible to dig up the BAHR and give him a scorching case of crabs? That might even be more fun than giving them to Satan...I mean Saban.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but the "Hello Kiffin" logo on everydayshouldbesaturday just kills me.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a recruit and received a phone call from CUM while visiting another school, I would specifically exclude UF as a choice. That is rude and intrusive. Of course, typical UF behavior is rude.
ReplyDeleteThe way I see it Kiffen didn't whine to anyone....he was gloating to alumni. CUM and UF whined to the SEC and demanded an apology.
ReplyDeleteI hate UF.
Urban does seem to be rather thin-skinned. I personally would love to see Kiffin put a whipping on UF. Don't see that happening but it would be great to watch the post-game handshake.
ReplyDeleteResist ... urge ... no ... Jet ... don't.
ReplyDeleteHoopie - you're exactly right
ReplyDeletej-z - the BAHR is crabs
Hoopie - my "you're right" applied only to your 1640 CST post.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't give CLK (Coach Loonie Kook) permission to break SEC rules.
Totally off topic, but browsing through AL.com comments sections I can see why the rest of the country has such a low opinion of the state of Alabama.
ReplyDeleteWhen helping your third-grader study math, and he or she asks you what is the lowest common denominator, the answer:
ReplyDeleteAnyone who posts on al.com
lol Jet
ReplyDeleteWould it have been against the rules for LK to give out UM's cell phone number (courtesly provided by the UT recruit)?
ReplyDeleteJet you continuously brilliant sense of humor is remarkable, but it is one of the many bright spots about the HABOTN...it's good to be here.
ReplyDeleteSeanZ ... thanks ... I'll send you the $20 I promised.
ReplyDeleteoops, not sure how I missed all those letters in "courteously". Probably cause my hands were full of Cheetohs (crunchy)
ReplyDeleteIf I understand correctly, their is nothing in the SEC code of conduct that addresses headbutts. With the size of the cranium size of the Chiz, I think we have a natural advantage in that area.
ReplyDeleteAnyone going to the women's game tonight? I would love to see them play at least one time this season.
ReplyDeleteUmmmmm....Cheetos. Sigh...
ReplyDeleteAnybody want to take a stab at our probable depth chart going into next year? Break it down by position...Predict which of our new studs will be competing for playing time? You know...
ReplyDeleteOh screw it. Let's talk about how much we hate Bama.
I'd be willing to contract an STD just to be able to transmit it to Saban. I hate Bama with a passion only approached by hummingbirds and Florida Gators.
You hate hummingbirds?
ReplyDeleteI guess you got told Lane.
ReplyDeleteI do.
ReplyDeleteThey remind me of giant mosquitoes and I'm alway worried one will fly at me and stab me in the forehead and get stuck there.
What on earth do you have against hummingbirds?
ReplyDeleteodd i know that THAT is what I got from your post...
J-Z.... I'll sit down at some point in the next couple days and put together a depth chart... I gotta get the roster updated first though... it'll take me having some free time...
ReplyDeleteand lizards...I hate lizards.
ReplyDeleteAnd Florida Gator fans...I mean really...Who told you it was a good idea to wear a tank top and flip flops to a football game. I don't buy into the whole wearing a tie to a game bs, but c'mon. You too bama fan. The houndstooth ball cap is stupid. And LSU fan, no amount of deodorant in the world can get the corndog stench off of you.
Vandy Fan, UGA Fan, KY Fan, USC Fan, I'm ok with you.
j-z, willingness to contract an STD raises the bar on some Bama hate. Impressive. Otherwise, I have always enjoyed hummingbirds. To each his own.
ReplyDeleteJet,
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing me to the EDSBS site for that... absolutely fitting...
Thank you D Miller. You are a fine American.
ReplyDeletewhat did a lizard ever do to you?
ReplyDeleteIt's a biblical serpent before the fall kind of thing. I have no problem at all with snakes, but lizards and hummingbirds are evil.
ReplyDeleteAnd any PAC 10 fan...I hate you and your overrated conference too. C'mon Oregon...those unis are stoooooopid. Drop the gimmicks and play some damn football.
I am stepping away from the keyboard now.
War Kicker on a Stick.
LOL Depressed. "Raises the bar" indeed. That was very diplomatic. JZ seems to be an intense fella.
ReplyDeleteIntense about hating hummingbirds and lizards anyway.
ReplyDeleteI have very pleasant memories of hummingbirds.
I have nothing against hummingbirds... but that red hummingbird liquid food crap is sticky if you spill it, and I hate that stuff.
ReplyDeletelizards you hate on the biblical basis, but snakes you like? shouldn't it be the other way around?
I like hummingbirds, but I hate those tacky, red, plastic feeders.
ReplyDeleteSomeone really, really needs to do some Photoshopping to put a hummingbird in JZ's forehead.
I'm sorry, but that just cracks me up.
When I was 10 I walked up to a hummingbird and trapped it in a maxwell house coffee can. I looked at it for a few minutes and realized I couldn'd do anything with it so I let it go. It did not impale my forehead. That's the only stupid hummingbird I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteBTW, hummingbirds don't play nice with each other.
j-z, you would freak out at the hummingbird exhibit at the arizona-sonora desert museum. it's enclosed much like the butterfly exhibit at callaway gardens. swarms of hummingbirds, most with hatred in their eyes.
ReplyDeleteI like nonpoisonous snakes. I hate poisonous snakes. I dislike ALL spiders. Lizards are cool, but I prefer salamanders.
ReplyDeletegila monsters, not so much.
ReplyDeleteScott - thanks for the heads up. That's definitely going in my travel plans.
ReplyDeleteSpiders eat insects. Spiders are our friends!
ReplyDeletealways pleased to help, doc.
ReplyDeleteY'all are bashing all the really cool animals.
ReplyDeleteI like what spiders do (hence I don't mash every single one I see), but they sure give me the creeps.
ReplyDeleteNoVaTiger - now I've got that Bob Dylan song stuck in my head.
ReplyDeleteSong? Purely accidental/
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteNot one of his finer musical creations.
ReplyDeletespiders- no problem. i "got rid of" 8 black widows from my shed this past summer, at different times. snakes? nonven- i shoo them away.. venomous- KILL. sorry, but if something can kill me or my dogs, i will get the drop. no exceptions. already killed 2 rattlers in the yard in past 3 years here in Mobile.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the song, interesting.
ReplyDeletegila monsters are rare out here, but quite deadly. tons of rattlesnakes, too. they are cool to observe from a distance. tree lizards abound out here. my cat tries to catch them, but is ususally placated when they release their tail, which she then plays with...
ReplyDeleteWHAT in the world are we talking about?
ReplyDeleteHi jhag- Kiffin, STDs, bugs, kamakaze hummingbirds, Bob Dylan, and, of course, Hatin' bama
ReplyDeleteso i just read Oku has narrowed his list to Auburn and Syracuse.
ReplyDeleteReally?
ReplyDeleteHold on let me find a link.
ReplyDeleteI am at the women's game.
ReplyDeleteI guess I should start a thread on that?
jhag, you're killin' me.
ReplyDeleteJust killin' me.
I like our chances against Syracuse.
ReplyDeleteOf course, he may want to be a big fish in a small pond.
I think one of Fulmer's assistants went to the 'cuse. He was recruiting Oku to TN before BlunderBoy Kiffin arrived.
ReplyDeleteIt's on scout and you need a subscription to read the link I am hearing... lets see what i can dig up
ReplyDeleteI think I saw that on the internet somewhere last month, so I know it's true.
ReplyDeleteHotties, you will be spared my drivel for a few hours; lots of work suddenly thrown my way.
Was he turned off by Kiffin's blunder or just (understandably) turned off by UT?
ReplyDeletehttp://texastech.scout.com/a.z?s=188&p=8&c=1&nid=3046881
ReplyDeleteI can't copy and paste the article but lok at the bottom Auburn and Syracuse moved ahead of Tennessee in intrest level...
Jay,
ReplyDeleteHow are the ladies looking? Keeping up through gamecast - only up by 1 at the half. Is Ole Miss playing well or are we playing poorly?
I hope he grows those 2 more inches he wants and about 20 more pounds of muscle.
ReplyDeleteCincyTiger ... just sloppy right now.
ReplyDeleteNova,
ReplyDeleteThat's what she said
sorry, couldn't help myself
I'm a hippo fan, personally. I hate coyotes, wolves, and grey foxes.
ReplyDeleteHoopie, I agree.
Solid, Aubie
ReplyDeleteHungry, hungry hippos.
ReplyDeleteI just cracked up at the STD and hummingbird comments. Wow that was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, anyone know anything about Dayton Ohio? I just found out that is where I am going to be stationed.
I got nothin'
ReplyDeletenext to Kettering, OH where a pot-smoking dorm hall friend was from.
ReplyDeleteFrequent site of early round NCAA games in March
Ohio should be a bit different than Alabama. Should be interesting.
ReplyDeleteI'll see it as an opportunity to advertise for Auburn!
pot smoking dorm hall friends are fun!
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely visit Johnson's Island, not too far north of Dayton.
