All we have are the embers

Thanks to the 312 people who participated in our Tuesday night campfire.

We opened at 8:40. We closed at 11:17.

Topics included Jonna Chizik, David Oku, Dontae Aycock's highlights, drunk texting, Gene Chizik's chin and the dismissals at WNSP radio in Mobile.

Big ups to Tuesday's chat stalwarts: jhag, Will, David Oku (prior to BANHAMMERING), Kristina, FSJ, MonD, j-z, Z4Z, Jet, wakerider, Nanner, Michael (in two tours) and newcomer PJunkie.

A great time was had by all.

  2. Sorry I could only make a brief appearance tonight folks... I hope I didn't let anyone down.

I'll do better next time I promise.

  3. Seinfeld and studying limited my time tonight. See you at the game tomorrow Jay!

  4. What was the deal this time on WNSP?
I know they fired McCready for not singing the praises of Mike Shula and helping break the Mike Price story.
I don't know what Seth & Co. did or did not do, but they were better than the replacement programming streaming in from Bammerham.

I listened to Sportsdrive from day #1 with Neal, Taylor and Issac. It was as good as any national talk show I have ever heard on ESPN and remained that way even after Taylor left. The show somehow managed to cater to the Alabama crowd and maintain its journalistic dignity nonetheless.

Jay, you were a big reason I listened to the show because of your Wednesday updates. I was listening the day you and WNSP parted ways after Neal was fired. That was definitely one of the ultimate moments in the history of that show. The show had never been the same since that day and is now dead. McCready pretty much took all the credibility with him when he was shown the door.

  5. WNSP is now a joke. Did I hear Finebaum on there the other day or was I just out of it? Completely unprofessional, which is a disappointment because I used to love listening to them for all of my sports coverage. And what's with those stupid hunting radio shows they do now? FAIL!

Good Morning, Hotties! It's Humpity Hump Hump Hump Day!!

Thanks to JustWin, Jet, Monica and TarHeel for the b-day sentiments!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I love Campfiring.

Good morning Hotties how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

    Happy Ash Wednesday.

  10. Good morning ladies! Hope y'all are having a great day and continue to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Jet- good morning to you, too. You finished that workout yet?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hey Hey THT - It's a gorgeous day in Alexandia, VA - great sunrise out my Marriott window.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yep, TarHeel ...

Coach Boone took us on a run, and we ended up at the battlefield at Gettysburg. He told us we're still fighting the same fight that they fought back then -- brother against brother. He told us to listen to their souls.

  14. A good morning to all out there in Hottieland.

Too bad I had to miss the campfire last night, I got a sick daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  15. alright folks... off to another day of the Fisheries conference!
    Have yourselves a fine day!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow, I hadn't heard that about WNSP. Earlier this month we lost Bill Shanks' afternoon show here in Macon (also 105.5 coincidentally). Bill is a decent UGA guy....I know, hard to believe.

I thought the national ESPN feed they replaced him with was bad, but Paul Finebaum?!?! Are they TRYING to run everyone out of Mobile County?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Morning Hotties - sorry to have missed the festivities last night and I'm sure the Campfire suffered somewhat due to my absence. But, I just can't stay awake 'till all hours of the night like 9:30 or so like you kids.

Something I thought about from posts yesterday and last night - if Michael was raised by wolves, I find it interesting that he made his foray into the sheep business in Idaho as we all know that sheep prefer to travel in different circles than wolves.

Perhaps that's the true reason behind his failure in this line of work - he continuously devoured his own inventory.

    ReplyDelete
  18. GaTiger, maybe Michael just has an identity crisis and likes to parade around like a....wolf in sheep's clothing? Ok that was bad, but a happy hump day/ Ash Wednesday to all the hotties.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Good morning hotties! I can't believe I left before Oku got banhammered. I don't think we want this kid in Auburn. Drama City.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That was a technical banhammering, not a true knockout. He was leaving, he was mildly annoying and I had an itchy trigger finger.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Can't believe the P in PJunkie is for "political."

    What a letdown.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well you can't let the hammer get rusty I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have people to handle that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. sorry i missed it last nite. sure it was a good one. :(

    ReplyDelete
  25. another great day in HABOTNOPOLIS

knock on wood; technology working smooooooothly this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That whole central time thing really messes it up for me, I love campfire but I also love sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  27. sleep doesn't do me much good; i always wake up exhausted.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Can't wait for jhag to report in. He went the distance and had school this morning. Surely a fun combination.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jay, those young folks can do it easy. I used to be young and stay up until 3 or 4 and still make an 8 A.M. class.

    ReplyDelete
  30. what an animal! mornin' jhag

    ReplyDelete
  31. but jhag, the real question is if you can campfire during class? that would be most impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I recall my first job after college - I'd go out with the boys which more often that not turned into an all-nighter, come home for a shower & change of clothes then go to work. After work, nap for a few hours and repeat the previous night activities.

Now days, the only parts of that I can do are the shower followed by going to work. I fantasize about taking naps but that's just not in the cards.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't see why not... Haha sounds like a good challenge though.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sorry I missed the campfire last night. I wish there were a Cliff Notes version available (more than the subject topics).

Y'all have a great day. It's a busy day. I hope to be back for the afternoon.

PS Oku needs to be banhammered. The real one, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just want to agree with everything chip chip said re: WNSP. I hate that they canned Issac, but Seth was an utter waste. Sports Drive has been dead since they canned Neal. All they did was make it official last week.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If JHag campfires during class, wouldn't it result in a fire drill?

And how would Dontae Aycock respond to that? Or Oku? Or Michael?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not much sleep last night...kept thinking of headlines for Aycocks big games. The campfire broke out and spread out of control on that issue for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good Morning HOTTIES!!!!

Trying to get over Mardi Gras here in Mobile the last two days.... seems like a missed a lot of good shiggdy!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't even think WNSP is the AU affiliate anymore. I could only find the basketball game on 105.1 which was fuzzy to say the least. WNSP was playing USA vs. Middle Tennessee or something instead. Maybe AU was on tape delay? At least they still play the ESPN programming. I pay attention to their ads so I know who not to do business with. It's basically a mouthpiece for the REC and Bammerham. Pat Dye is the only reason I would ever listen to that show.

    ReplyDelete
  40. weagle - Purple Jesus Dude is awesome!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Having been raised by wolves, I am deathly afraid of fire. So I follow any fire drill with the utmost seriousness, Jet.

  45. I saw a link out there on the interwebs that showed some pics of the girl who Oku is supposedly moving to Neb to be close to. Lemme just say, at 18, she might not have been worth moving to Neb for, but it would have been worth a loooooong visit. (the site is a FB blog and it is SFW)

I am diet coke free for 2+ minutes now. The headaches and blurry vision are setting in.

    ReplyDelete
  52. J-Z, no one is more than a few steps away from a Diet coke at anytime, not even Monica over there in West Virginia. Feed the addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Somehow I get the feeling that Oku and that girl don't go together like peas and carrots

    ReplyDelete

SeanZ, except for those of us who don't drink Diet Coke. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. LUV, I think the good men of Confederate Railroad said it best when they said, "I like my women a little on the trashy side."

Please don't tell my wife I said that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Luv, I despise diet drinks myself, but I'm never far from Diet Coke. This is the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I gave up soft drinks and trashy women for Lent. Don't tell my wife.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous10:43 AM

TarHeel, you're secret is safe with me!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ah Lent, it's that time of year. I hope no one plans on giving up the HABOTN...

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anonymous10:47 AM

SeanZ, cases and cases of it, right?

    ReplyDelete
  62. cases and cases...

Luv, you talkin 'bout my basement?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonymous10:49 AM

LOL No, I was referring to the fact that SeanZ works for Coca-Cola.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Luv, we actually only have a vending/fountain in my location. However, just a few miles up the street there lies the Willy Wonka plant, Coke style.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Anonymous10:52 AM

A vending machine? You have to pay for it??

    ReplyDelete
  66. seanz - really? do you really have to pay for it? we have the fountains which are chock full of your product in every breakroom. even though it's free, i still rarely drink it and stick to my water. but still... you have to pay for it? i mean, that'd be like working for the u.s. treasury and not getting to take home some free $.

    ReplyDelete
  67. 25 cents/can from the vending machines at 2 of the places I work. I still take my own Diet Cokes to work as the fear and consequences of the "sold out" light are too great.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I feel so proud to have my name appear in one of Jay's Posts, this must be what it feels like to win a Nobel Prize

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm sure it's the exact same feeling...without all the money.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The Oku girlffriend stuff is kinda silly; we can't believe some crap someone is posting who knows where, about a random chick.

    ReplyDelete
  71. My father worked for Coke for 25ish years and we never got free coke. Although towards the time he retired they started selling product cheap to employees.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I have given up losing to UAT in anything in perpetuity for Lent.

    ReplyDelete
  73. i worked at the Pepsi bottling plant in Lexington, KY one summer during grad school. i think i put on 5 lbs just because we would drink it straight off the line before it got the tops put on, ice cold. good times, man. good times.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The new Fanta Zero drink is fabulous as far as doet drinks go. Completely destroys my previous favorite diet drink ( a certain secondary product of a secondary product line). Destroys!!!!

Oh, and diet Orange Crush is pretty good, too, but it's a faker. Still a good bit of sugar in it

Still,do any of those really beat strawberry sugar-free Kool-Aid? Oh Yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  75. If it's all the same, I'd rather talk about Oku's GF than diet drinks.

Or maybe we can talk about grits. Or BBQ. But not the BBQ Boys. They're outta here.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Notice the lack of any of those 7 being in Central Alabama?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Re: Paying for drinks...well it's a funny thing, downtown, there are vending machines @ no cost to the employees. Where I work, we have heavily discounted machines and free fountain. I've so far managed to avoid weight gain.

Re: Diet Drinks, the only 2 I can drink are Vault Zero and Cherry Coke Zero.

sorry i missed the fire, HOTTIES. Just got back yesterday from Princeton, NJ with a side trip to NYC/Times Square. first time in my life going there (NYC). Wow, what a place. GRAY'S PAPAYA, ESPNZONE, street vendors, yes, i ate them at them all. Not too cold, 40 degrees, perfect times. I should be posting more from now on, for those who care.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I watched the AU/USCal game from that espnzone, it sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  83. jet / jz - i noticed each of the 7 were in places i'm extremely unlikely to be (& one i don't know where it is). so, the list is worthless. way to go jet.

bear - did you get some great nyc pizza from sbarro? or, did you go to red lobster? those are michael scott's favorite places to eat when he goes to nyc. just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  84. april 1st i get to stick it to the man! on that day, thanks to my joining the rolls of those working for the man, i get to cancel our privately obtained health insurance and switch to the company's health plan. the kicker is that it's the same insurer and i get better coverage from them at $800 per month cheaper. it's a small victory, i know.

  85. My fave italian place in nyc.

  86. Scott, great news.

Gatiger, I can vouch for GreenTop. It's pretty good. I am surprised Jim's BBQ north of Billingsley was not on the list or Lanney's in Selma. Both are much better.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I ate at Gray's Papaya when I went to NY a couple of years ago! It was great, and it's cheapness almost made up for the insane prices everywhere else. Well, not really, but it was still nice that it was cheap.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Anonymous12:21 PM

    scott, $800? That's a huge victory!

    ReplyDelete
  89. scottieb - that's no small victory. put that savings into a roth or something along those lines other than the stock market and you'll be glad you did.

NYC Pizza- got it from some dive place off 8th ave. cannot recall the name, but it was great. it wasn't Sabarros, I can get that in most malls in the US. glad to see Jay G back working, as i am sure he is glad to be back. Also, I was a listener of WNSP Sportsdrive almost daily, and I liked Seth and Pat. Isaac was great, he got royally jobbed. also, it did seem to me that Seth was trying to be a bit Cowherd-like, IMO. I guess that won't fly here in Mobile.

    Re: the BBQ Joints.....

I have been to several of them... Arichibalds, Green Top, Big Bob Gibsons, Bob Sykes & the Brick Pit.

I'd rate the ones I have been to as follows:

    1) Archibalds (by a mile)
    2) Green Top
    3) Brick Pit
    4) Bob Gibsons
    5) Bob Sykes

    Haven't been to the others...
but some I would suggest are:

    1) Miss Myra's in Cahaba Heights (See Bart Starr there often). Best banana pudding on earth too.
    2) Lizzies (in East Gadsden)
    3) Rib it Up (in Bham-on the Legion Field side of I-65)

    Out of State BBQ:
    1) Jenkins BBQ in Jacksonville, FL.. They serve it from behind bullet proof glass. No joke. Pretty good though
    2) Melvin's -Just outside of Charleston. Very good.
    3) Louie Mueller's....The Holy Grail of Texas BBQ

  110. FSJ. Jenkins is good. Lived in J-Vill for a while, and would drive by there to avoid traffic. Among the rotton smells of downtown homeless people, that block would smell like a heavenly perfume!

Off the beaten path BBQ find: Factory BBQ in Oklahoma. Good stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Anonymous12:54 PM

gatiger - never thought you were a moron, but thanks for the clarification. as for BBQ, I go to the Brick Pit here in Mobile 1-2 times/month. Hardly ever go to Dreamland. I have had great BBQ in Kansas City; the best place, called LC's, has bars on the windows, and looks like it should be shut down due to cleanliness concerns; however, I have found most of the great BBQ joints in the US look like that. Only exception- Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati; but that is hardly BBQ, IMO

    ReplyDelete
  112. FSJ - I directed thanks to Jet when I should have directed thanks to you for your list of bbq favs.

  114. Let's make this clear:

    GaTiger IS a moron.

    Thank you. That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  115. To the BBQ question, the best I've found in the NE ATL area is at Smokejack in downtown Alpharetta followed by Low Country which is in an unincorporated area (I think)of Cumming (yes, that IS the name).

    ReplyDelete

That's one reason I like HABOTN so much!

    ReplyDelete
  118. you are the only person I've ever heard say good things about Lowcountry...In Atlanta, can't beat Daddy Dz, but I've probably said that before.

    ReplyDelete
  119. PF ...

that's because GaTiger is a moron.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Exactly Bear....

I do not want my BBQ joints or bars to be pristine places..

    I like it dirty.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I'm happy about the bbq conversation. it's the closest I get to eating any, usually. as BBQ leaves a very specific impression on my mind, I can almost smell and taste the places discussed (that I've had, anyway). That's very satisfying.

    ReplyDelete
  122. PF - Low Country isn't great, but I certainly don't think it's bad. It's just one of two places in my immediate area where I actually like their BBQ. The other places around here that try it are of the chain variety and I typically try to avoid those. There is one other places I've heard good things about but have never been since it's not very convenient so I won't report on it. Perhaps in one of our upcoming weekly BBQ discussions.

    ReplyDelete
  123. And for the record....

The only Dreamland fit to eat at is the original.

The one outside of Atlanta is atrocious.

The one in Bham is fair...

I hear bad things about the other "new" ones.

    ReplyDelete
  124. FSJ ...

Don't come to the Gump for Dreamland.

Hey, just don't come to the Gump at all, Bammer.

    Feeling kinda fiesty today.

This moron has all of the information required to make it happen.

    So there.

    ReplyDelete
  126. The only restaurant in Montgomery that made an impression on me is one that was just on the edge of downtown that some lady ran out of what obviously was a house at some point...

I went there a couple of times for lunch...

Have no idea the name...but there was a story behind it.

    ReplyDelete
  127. FSJ - Martha's Place? There's a story to it as I recall.

    ReplyDelete
  128. The Commissary in Memphis is my favorite BBQ joint. Rendezvous and Neely's are close behind. Corky's is quite good, too. The perfect BBQ sandwich would consist of Neely's meat and the Commissary's sauce.

I am from Memphis, so my word is final on this.

    ReplyDelete
  129. 312, incredible. These days the campfire attendance may beat out the basketball games.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Memphis is a meld of dry rub and Carolina vinegar, right? Dry rub when smoking, then served with a traditional vinegar sauce? If so, I approve. There is nothing better than a vinegar sauce, but it can hinder the smoke when cooked heavily in it. Dry rubs solve this problem. I love that Memphis/ West Memphis/North MS/NW AL bbq....and the blues that go with it.

    ReplyDelete
  131. You know what I hate about heavy tomato BBQ sauces? The sweet flavor that results is artificially created. Sweetness should result from the decay of a good quality slab of meat, not from some sauce that is added. That is why vinegar is best. It balances out the sweetness of the meat.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Just seein' if you were awake, GaTiger.

    Fight the enemy, GaTiger.

    Fight FSJ!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Jay G,

White shirt to support the team you cover (but aren't a fan of), or to blend in?

    ReplyDelete
  134. You are so wrong, Frankenbummer. Memphis sauce is tomato based. The vinegar stuff is the crap they have here in Huntsville. The meat here is no good either. I understand wanting it juicy, but it is so wet and unfirm that it seems like it has been soaking in water or something.

You have not had the best tomato based sauce. They serve it some places here in Huntsville, and it is no good. The Commissary, which I mentioned earlier, makes a spicy tomato based sauce, and it is my favorite.

You are right on the dry rub, though. The Rendezvous has really famous dry rub ribs, and when you see ribs "Memphis Style" at other restaurants, that is what you are getting.

  135. A vinegar based sauce is a "carolina style" bbq sauce.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Its more of the tomato sauce and vinegar, though, if I remember correctly (explaining the "spicy" aspect you speak of). That's what I call a Carolina Vinegar (which in itself is incorrect, as I've had three types of vinegar sauce in the Carolinas). Not a full on vinegar sauce a la Huntsville (which I kinda like, but gets wet and sloppy), but still has vinegar nontheless. It certainly isn't a tomato paste that turns out super sweet and resembles ketchup in texture.

Wow, you guys really know your BBQ! Me, on the other hand, being a Yankee, I have no clue what you're talking about. Jim 'n Nick's and Golden Rule are good to me - you guys are probably cringing right now!

  139. I'm a sweet baby ray's bbq sauce fan myself. I like to grill off some poblanos and onions and pull a lime or lemon off my tree and let that simmer for a while. I'll also get the kc masterpiece basic sauce and doll that up with stuff around the house. Got some garlic sea salt i've grown very fond of lately.

for my 2 cents, if it is cooked correctly, you don't need no stinkin sauce.... same with steak. flavor comes from the type of wood/smoke. a small, tiny amount of sauce on the side for occasional dipping is ok. and yes, vinegar sauces- carolinas, Memphis - dry rub, TX/KC - tomato/molassas (sp?) based.

  141. With all of this talk about bbq sauces I feel like I'm at an Auburn Football recruiting meeting circa 2007...

  142. I find error in calling anything BBQ related "Carolina-style". All four types of BBq (tomato sauce, tomato paste, vinegar, and mustard) are well represented throughout different regions of the Carolinas. As are variations and hybrids of the different types. That being said, I use that term.

  153. Frankenbummer: I know the spicy sauce you are talking about, but I am talking about kethup in texture spicy sauce. It is unique to this one restaurant. Neely's sauce is also a little spicy, but it is thinner, more like what you are talking about. Corky's is really sweet, which I still like, but it is not my favorite. It still beats vinegar in my book.

I am proud to say that in the wikipedia entry for BBQ styles, there is a list of styles varying from state to state, but Memphis is the only city to get a section all to ourselves. You guys should come to BBQ Fest in May. It is awesome.

  156. Seanz, my favorite in Auburn was also Mike and Ed's. Pretty good stuff. While Memphis style is my favorite, I do like the spicier mustard based stuff that seemed to rule down south. I am no snob, after all. Well, except for when it comes to the whole vinegar thing.

You don't see the spanish influence here like you once did. Good Spanish rice is hard to come by these days but you can get a bowl of gumbo anywhere.

Like Archibald's, Dreamland, etc. They both incorporate ketchup and mustard in theirs to get the "semi-orange" color.

  183. Here's my pithy comment... ($1 to Bill O'Reilly):

Dreamland sauce starts with Kraft sauce as a base, IMO.

So, knowing that, I came across this clone recipe for Dreamland sauce. This is a pretty close clone for it...It still lacks something and I am working on that..but it is pretty close. Close enough to know it is what they use. If you need it more thin add some more vinegar.

1 qt Kraft bbq sauce (Plain old Kraft)
    1/2 c French's yellow
    1 c vinegar
    1c water
    1/2 c molasses
    4 tbsp Tabasco
You might also add a TBSP of Rub or Spice Blend to taste...

There is a more prominent clone recipe out there on the internet..I've tried it and although the color is right it doesn't taste the same to me....

    Dreamland Clone

And sorry to Jay for turning HABOTN into Food Network...At least I didn't link the clip going around of Paula Deen losing her pants in front of an audience....
