Thoughts and observations, Part I
MONDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,023
Hey everyone. Thanks for reading yesterday's recruiting coverage. We received a ton of hits, getting February off to a roaring start.
I think I'm going to start posting our monthly numbers so you can see how things are going. This enterprise is as much you as it is me -- since I'd be writing to nobody if you all didn't talk about the HABOTN out and about.
If you think I'm wrong, look through the archives and see how many posts had ZERO comments back in the day.

RECRUITING CHATTER
Here are a few fairly random things I'm noticing...
- One of the HOTTIES passed along an interesting article form the Tampa Trib yesterday about Dontae Aycock. He was in Auburn yesterday for a "secret" visit. Though the story says Aycock is committed to Georgia Tech, the source is a high-school assistant coach. Auburn wants Aycock as a tailback. Tech wants him as a quarterback. The real question is: Which position does Aycock prefer?
- A trio of Auburn commitments -- LB Harris Gaston (pictured at left), CB Izauea Lanier and ATH Brandon Heavens -- took official visits to Mississippi State last weekend. Lanier and Gaston told AuburnSports.com that they're still completely faithful to the Tigers. Heavens could not be reached for comment. Are you see a recurring theme here? Heavens twice missed scheduled official visits to Auburn. I don't think he's in the Tigers' plans any longer.
I'm sure that's weird for Gaston, who played with Heavens for years at Bessemer Academy until Heavens left for Jess Lanier in 2008.
There still is talk that Bessemer Academy's featured tailback, Jeremy Cox, will accept a walk-on offer at Auburn. He would have been at least a semi-coveted prospect, but an early-season knee injury ended his year. He has a chance to be good. Just remember that former Prattville star Justin Albert, a scatback who also missed a portion of his senior season with a knee injury, spent last year rehabbing on the Plains and should be ready to go this spring. He'll have a leg up on Cox. - So how many spots does Auburn have remaining? Anecdotal evidence suggests 30 constitutes a "full" class and The Tigers currently have 25 players in the 2009 signing class. They can add up to 25 scholarship newcomers heading into two-a-days, so you can see the dilemma.
Several major recruits with Auburn scholarship papers waiting include: TB David Oku, DT Corey Gaines, WR Emory Blake, OT Aubrey Phillips, OG Johnnie Farms, LB Jonathan Atchison, LB Joel Kight, QB Raymond Cotton, CB Greg Reid and DL DeQuinta Jones (pictured at right).
Many of those guys are committed elsewhere. Still, surprises can and do occur on Signing Day. It's worthwhile to keep in mind everyone who has an offer -- particularly the guys who have made official visits. - Maybe you Rivals.com people saw this: LB Eltoro Freeman now is listed as a 3-star guy. That seems impossible to me. He was a 5-star guy once upon a time.

about the refs....why do they have numbers on their shirts?
While I am personally opposed to puppets and puppet stimulation, the U.S. Supreme Court definitively ruled in an Alabama case, McCarthy v. King, that the state's anti-puppet stimulation law was unconstitutional.
well, it did always have this annoying grin on its face.
y'all are strange
we've been through the looking glass.
Puppet to human interaction is an abomination.
I understand that the puppet issue is THE litmus test for any potential Supreme Court nominees from the Obama administration.
I need some Dukes of Hazzard trivia questions for Thursday night.
Amen, Doug.
What was the name of Waylon Jennings' character on the show?
Answer: The Balladeer
Is Doug your imaginary comment friend or are you listening to the radio, mond?
what brand of cutoff jeans did daisy wear?
J-Z ...
Sonny Schroyer played Enos ... he was also in the Oscar-winning Best Picture of 1994. What was the movie? What scourge of humanity was his character based upon?
Michael - I'll tell you for $9.95.
JZ - http://www.hazzardnet.com/
How do tires sqeal on dirt roads?
squeal
ok...Let me clarify...I need answers too.
Same way Ned Beatty squeals like a pig.
michael, we can talk because of the disdain you have for puppets. I can relate. we're practically brothers, except not really
Mon...Did you have that bookmarked?
I think that puppet from Poltergeist was evil. I will never look under my bed.
Lee's
obtuse does not mean "being difficult" Josh Moon
I don't know about Dukes of Hazzard trivia, but when I think of Dukes of Hazzrd I'm reminded of someone from high school who LOVED that show and also had a collection of Billy beer in their house.
Yes, JZ. I live for Dukes of Hazard Trivia.
The guy who carnies for the SHAMWOW is now going to make be by the SLAPCHOP.
I can't resist.
Doesn't he have the line "you'll love my nuts" in his Slapchop schtick?
No, Josh, you were wrong. Just say you were wrong. You can do it.
Chris ... sounds like our next OL coach if Grimes doesn't work out.
Achmed the terriost is pretty cool though.
http://www.break.com/index/achmed-the-terrorist.html
i had a dukes of hazzard lunchbox and sleeping bag. I was popular
J-Z
"Enos" played the "Chain smokin', alcoholic, cheatin', Houndstooth hat-wearin' coach" character in "Forrest Gump."
http://www.buyersmls.com/americantv/dukes/dukestrivia.htm
JZ - Last freebie.
GaTiger ... I'm trying to remember who that classmate might be.
Jet, I'll let you stew on that one a bit.
J-Z:
Which character ended up in Congress? What state did he represent?
Cooter, Georgia.
Cooter and "Gopher" from the Love Boat were in Congress at the same time, as I recall.
Isaac the bardtender would have, too, but he served too many mai-tais the night before the election and he lost by 8 votes.
And now we're getting Stewart Smalley.
I think I'm going to do a "what Jay thought of the recruits he met this weekend" post in a bit.
Rain slows me down, I guess.
The guy who carnies for the SHAMWOW is now going to make be by the SLAPCHOP.
I can't resist.
Quote: You'll love my nuts with the SLAPCHOP!
Jay ...
Help us ... we're stuck with Puppets, and Dukes of Hazzard trivia.
I can feel a What Not to Wear marathon coming on soon.
Championship teams, particularly in college, tend to always have a great defense and an experienced quarterback.
SteveFC- I love your subtle attempts to get us back on topic.
Does anybody know what happened to Ken Adams? He was signed last year and went the JUCO route. Is he going to be offered again or what?
How are you doing today, Tar?
From UT blog site linked to via Goldberg:
Yesterday was the 1st super bowl without a TN player. I wonder if the streak is still intact for any/many other schools.
It takes TWO years to get out of JUCO.
But recently, Champioships are won by scoring points.
Hi Mon- I'm nothing but cobwebs. Can't even feed myself cause I can't think what to eat. Beanie Weenies come to mind but there aren't any in the house. I'm saving the ice cream for dessert, but can't get there without a main course. Had fudge sticks as an appetizer.
in Mrs THT's absence, Miss THT offered to russle up some grub, but I declined in an effort to prove that I can take care of myself, which of course, I can't. How pathetic.
Mon- YOU ARE RIGHT!!! Your faith in my gave me the courage to fix myself some lunch. I'm just starting my 2nd bowl of cereal!
i had a nostalgice moment buying groceries. i picked up chef boyardee mini raviolis. didn't taste as good as i remembered.
"nostalgic"
He does say "you'll love my nuts"
Apparently, UT's recruiting class is imploding. Auburn is only one of the prospective beneficiaries. What if you pay ginormous sums to coaches based solely on their recruiting prowess ... and they can't/don't recruit??
Source is Goldberg and this article:
http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/feb/01/not-good-news-uts-recruiting-weekend/
Scott - exactly the reason I didn't heat up a can of ravioli.
Now beanie weenies...YUM. I think I've had them once in the last 30 years. Someone at work had some yesterday, I got a whiff, and I've been craving ever since.
Apparently Tennessee boosters are not as likely to buy houses for recruits' parents (probably because Bama fans are just waiting for a chance to catch one doing it for some payback.)
That is strange about UT's recruiting class. i wonder whats up?
THT,
You're not doing a bit of good to calm my fears of being able to survive next weekend while the Mrs is in DC.
I now fear her getting home to a trashed, stench filled apartment and my starved self covered in filth on the couch.
Can you hire a housewife for the weekend? I wonder what that would set me back?
If defense doesnt win championships, it can certainly lose one for you. See the Cards on that last drive.
D. Miller - sure you can, Joel did it in Risky Business.
and stay FAR away from the canned corned beef hash.
Yikes! D.Miller you just reminded me that I need to start picking some stuff up around here. I should also probably go make up the bed, assuming I can get the dog out of it.
D Miller...a housekeeper would be your best bet. Less expensive and no whining.
re UT: Their staff (most notably coach O) was not put together until pretty late in the game, even compared to ours, and I don't think that Lane Kiffin is quite the recruiter he is touted to be.
I think Mrs Lane Tiffin was the one touted to be the recruiter. I'm faxing my LOI early Wed. a.m.
yes!!! just found out my boss will be in Nashville on wednesday. looks like i'll be here all day!!
My bachelor diet:
Sunday night: Guthries
Monday night: ravioli
Tuesday night: Geno's 99 cent pizza (now $1.50)
Wednesday night:cereal
Thursday - Saturday night: Greely's long island teas
Michael, so then we have one more year before we have to worry about them? shift that concern to ole miss who looks good with all of coach O's recruits.
Aubie grew a head! Before he looked like Roland sans the tommy gun
Awesome obscure Warren Zevon reference THT. You are my new best friend. I'll toast a pina colada at Trader Vic's to you!
Yo Aubie! Jeanie wants a shooter!!!
You excitable boys, you.
UT should be rolling recruiting next year. This year, they had all these coaches coming in from the NFL who weren't on recruits' radars. We got all college coaches and are wooing guys they recruited at their previous spots.
oops, needs a shooter (I was an excitable boy)
yo, Michael, your dome still reminding me of the kidnapped handicap who caught the clap from a mousetrap
should we unsnap your skull cap?
You don't like Trooper Terri?
Her/Him just fine. I just think about that song almost every time I see you/it/her/him.
Tarheel word is out. Lane is like Marsellus in Pulp Fiction. Better not look at the Ms.
Michael,
I think Trooper Terri would be easier on the eyes if she/he had a forehead.
Besides, do we really know that it's not Terri Barkley?
foreheads are for fools.
I'm proud of you, Tar. :-)
"whining"?
Jay GT photos remind me...
I wonder if the visitors ate breakfast at the Hotel/Conf Ctr or elsewhere with coaches/players. It had been a long time since I'd been in there for breakfast, but last season the breakfast there MUCH better than it was back in the day. Our game day routine included b'fast in War Eagle Cafeteria until they shut it down :-(
it shouldn't be so hard to find good grits in Auburn on game day.
Ok, any non-grit lovers, save your jokes.
Shoot fellas don't worry about the women being out of town...
I encourage it.....
FSJ,
Mrs THT and I are like Eng & Chang i.e., inseparable
Non-grits lover = Person not to be trusted = Person who "cheers for both teams until last game."
HAHAHAHA AMEN Jet! Amen AND Amen.
JGT,
If there is any possible way you can snag an afternoon radio spot, please do. I cannot stand to listen to the spewing drivel that 740 puts on air. I lose brain cells if I ever try to listen.
Tar - You're a good man.
Aw shucks. I'm embarrassed.
Jet speaks the gospel
I love grits, but I put sugar in mine, which some people seem to think makes me weird.
I also put honey in my grits.
All this time, you thought it was Brother Chette ...
It was Brother Jet.
we mostly eat cheese grits since that's what Mrs & Miss THT prefer. I'm happy with a little buttah and a pinch of shugah
Ok, Brother Jet... what are you doing in the Gump? You should be in Wichita speaking with Bryce Brown's adviser.
Mmmmmm.... Cheese grits are hard to turn down.
D ...
I don't know if I'd be putting that kinda info out there. Just sayin'
On my chart of biblically approved amendments to grits are cheese, butter, and crumbled bacon or sausage.
There may be others, I just don't know 'em.
The honey has to come from the bottle that looks like a bear too.
I don't buy honey unless it's in a bear shaped bottle.
Here's the scenario.
Reuben Randle arrives in Tuscaloosa. A drunken Colleen Collette meets him at the airport and plays tonsil hockey with him.
His driver is a shirtless roid freak with a life size tattoo of African American Bear Bryant across his back.
He arrives at the stadium to see what it looks like and the ramp lady is screaming her lungs out.
That night he is arrested at a pit bull fight while his player host is arrested for selling illegal drugs.
So, with that in mind, does UAT get in trouble with the NCAA for simulating a game day experience?
Well, I do like honey from a bear shaped bottle.
I always eat my cheese grits separate from my bacon & eggs. But regular grits are good all jumbled up with your bacon & eggs. I was taught that by someone from Hueytown when I was an AU freshman.
(I tend to be like Monk, keeping my foods separate until they are in my stomach)
If, heaven forbid, I were UAT's attorney in said matter, I would offer the "that's just your ordinary Tuesday" defense. I think it's a winner.
THT,
I jumble all my food together before I eat and then separate it when it gets to my stomach.
Cheese grits, ahhh.
How about a trip to Point Clear to the Grand Hotel for their exquisitely creamy cheese grits with a crabmeat omelette?
A true Alabama treasure.
Aubie - you are cracking me up. now STOP it. or stop IT.
BTW, (btw) everyone knows Tuesday is dog-fight night.
I've got the little bear filled with honey right here. I'm going to take a big squeeze...
Yum that was good stuff.
I like Sourwood honey, but I put it in one of those little bear squeeze containers.
rats my keyboard is sticky now
I think this guy should have had a bear shaped bottle of honey tattoed (spelling anyone?) on his back instead of a politically correct A-A Bear Bryant.
-->
why do they make bears cute and cuddly for honey containers and stuffed toys. I know the real bears, and they are not nice at all.
well I know Koalas, and Harrison, you don't know them (in my best old vp candidate voice (i forgot his name, the guy from tx)
parenthetical error, oh no!!!
They are cute and cuddly when they are little. Then they grow up, start smoking chesterfields and drinking whiskey, and become evil football coaches.
bentsen?
What happenned to the post you were working on JGT?
You are still technically talking in parentheses, THT. I suggest you close it out lest the rest of what you say be deemed inconsequential.
i'm sure koalas have a mean streak in there somewhere, you never know
)
Michael implied that something I've said at one time had been deemed consequential...ROFLMAO!
Calm down TarHeel, it was just Michael.
No one else has thought that.
koalas are not bears. They are a member of the chipmunk family. They live in tunnels that they burrow and eat the roots of eucalyptus trees. When ground into a fine powder they make excellent coffee. They can also be used as paperweights (when stuffed).
It's true. I read it on wikipedia.
Aubie - I was hoping no one would catch that little zoological error I tried to sneak through.
For the record, I am against grinding koalas into fine powder and using them for coffee. Paperweights on the other hand.....
Aubie, can you pretty, pretty please go back to your other avatar. This is a family-friendly blog.
No problem.
By the way, koala are also quite tasty.
They taste like a cross between chimpanzee and calico cat. Sort of like gopher.
I'm sorry. I meant to say golfer... not gopher.
An assistant coach at Melrose High School in Memphis told AuburnUndercover.com on Monday morning he expects linebacker Greg King to sign with Tennessee on Wednesday.
If I kill all the golfers, they'll lock me up and throw away the key.
I think Michael Phelps has been hanging out with Carl in the assistance groundskeeper's shed.
But how will you ever get out if they throw away the key?
Beanie Weenies are here!!! Miss THT is the best daughter in the world.
I just had a man like Jay G call me about my bball team =)
I love me some Coldplay Viva la Vida
you know how i know you're gay?
cause you listen to coldplay
Admit it, TarHeel, you really like Livin' La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin.
Harrison, you're late. I'm no longer gay. I'm now listening to the Cowsills (Hair) then The Cyrkle, then Dallas Holm, then David Bowie then..uh oh. Strike that last one.
jhag, think I read a while back that Greg King has qualifying issues.
Knowing the history of recruiting there, it would shock me if any Tennessee target in Memphis ever went anywhere else. They would have to take a pay cut.
sugar on grits? i've spent 20 years out here educating the heathens about that faux pas. now it's here on the habotn for all to see. only people without foreheads put sugar on grits!
What the heck is this Clay Craft drama all over rivals about? I'm lost...
I consider sugar on grits an abomination as well, Scott
Pat Knight is a moron
My wife is a yankee and she puts sugar on her grits. Makes me want to grab a grapefruit and go all James Cagney on her.
I love shrimp n grits. Is that an abomination? If so, call me the Abominable Grits-Man!
well... kiss my grits then...
Aubie- I'm speechless. Please tell me she's from Pittsburgh.
I like mixing my bacon or golfer in with my grits with a big cup of koala coffee.
i love shrimp, and I love grits. And I'll eat shrimp & grits, but that's almost too high class for my ignorant palate.
She is not from Pittsburgh. She is actually Midwestern. She says she's not a yankee. I say anyone north of Huntsville is a Yankee.
I made the mistake of letting the kids watch Tommy Boy. We went to a seafood restaurant at the beach and my son asked the waitress if the shrimp were de-turded.
Lest I be insulted, I'll assume you meant "due north".
Shrimp and grits is a combination worth celebrating ... dinner, anyone?
I don't like regular grits at all (salt, pepper, butter). If you add enough cheese, then I can force it down. But I don't claim to be any great southerner. I lived in the "big city" my whole life and I have never been hunting and NASCAR fans make me laugh. Can you guys still be friends with me?
Jet. You and I have both touted Lebo as a good coach, bad recruiter. After this weekend, I think its time for him to go,and go now...ala Gottfried. He has no inside game, never had one, don't think he ever will. Can have an average Vandy team beat you at home. No way, no how. Time for a change.
michael, i grew up in this state and can't stand nascar and have never been hunting. I also just now learned to like grits. I also hate country music. see we are almost brothers
you guys have to work on this not being able to cook for yourself thing.
Eltoro is a 5 star on scout and he's a 3 on rivals b/c they dont rate JUCO's and put them all as 3 stars.
