Tennessee def. Auburn, 94-85 (SEC Tournament)

Hey everyone. I am located in drizzly Montgomery, Ala., for this epic battle between your Auburn Tigers and the Volunteers of Tennessee. Loser leaves town. Winner faces Mississippi State tomorrow for The Big Game.

Why am I in Montgomery?
In short: My newspaper doesn't have a lot of money right now and a trip wasn't financially feasible.

OK. On with the show ...

  • FINAL
    Tennessee 94, Auburn 85.

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:30-ish, 2nd half
Tennessee leads, 79-71. Same stuff. Tennessee has so many second-chance points. Better hustle = better game. Simple.

  • THIRD TO @ 6:48, 2nd half
Tennessee leads, 72-62. Auburn's offense seems fine to me, but Tennessee keeps getting second chance on its ends. That's the product of superior hustle in my book.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:00-ish, 2nd half
Tennessee leads, 65-57. I'm surprised this is an 8-point game. Auburn is being outplayed in most facets right now, but the Volunteers haven't been able to levy the knockout punch just yet. The Tigers still have a decent chance here.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:00-ish, 2nd half
    Tennessee leads, 55-47.

  • HALFTIME
Tennessee 47, Auburn 36. The Volunteers are getting freaky breaks right now. I just watched a possession where UT committed two turnovers, traveled twice (both on hop steps) and still scored. That was the most funky possession I've seen all year.

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:07, 1st half
Tennessee leads, 40-29. Wayne Chism, the UT forward, already has 16 points. Might it be time for a strategic adjustment from the Tigers' head coach? We shall see.

  • THIRD TO @ 7:30-ish, 1st half
Tennessee leads, 30-22. More sloppiness from the Tigers. Tennessee also has been more accurate from three-point range than expected. They're 5-of-10 at this point.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:57, 1st half
Auburn leads, 16-15. The Tigers are sloppifying. Five turnovers already. Aside from the early dunks, though, Tennessee hasn't had much in the way of good shots.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:00-ish, 1st half
Auburn leads, 12-10. The Tigers are passing very well today. They can't go body-on-body with the Vols because they're so much bigger, but Auburn can play the steal-and-run game. It's working right now.

  • YOUR AUBURN STARTERS
    PG -- Speed Reed
SG -- Quantez Robertson, boyfriend of Sherell Hobbs
    SF -- Tay Waller, shooter
"PF" -- Rasheem Barrett, jump shooter
    F/C -- Korvotney Barber, "dubs"

Well Hotties I've been watching away from the house today with a group of Auburn alumni, it was a tough loss but hats off to our guys, they have played stellar ball down the stretch. Somedays teams like UT just have it clicking and today was one of those. I still think we have an outside shot at the NCAA but I won't be too disappointed if we don't make it. The NIT is a step in the right direction and we've definitely built up some nice momentum heading into next season.

UofL wins the big East regular season and the tourney. I predict they will be a number one seed. I further will be surprised if the Big East doesn't have 3 of 4 top seeds. If not, they will have alot of the 2 seeds. I am not too impressed with the SEC, now having said that, watch an SEC team go deep in the NCAA. Of course, it is all about match ups. For instance, if TN gets to play teams that don't value defense or physical play, then they could go far. LSU could get upset early. Any other ideas out there.

Denny, you are correct. The fact is the SEC water weak. I've watched a lot of hoops this year, and while I'm not a national championship coach such as yourself, I think my eyes are trained well enough to say the 4th best teams in the other "big" leagues would take us behind the barn and bludgeon us.

I'm proud of this team's effort, but we're a top 50-60 -- nothing better. We're an NIT team. That's OK -- for this year.

10:47 AM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

If we are a top 50-60 team we deserve to be in the tournament.

I agree with Jay Bilas on that. The best 65 teams deserve to play, regardless of anything else.

Here we come NIT.

Blogger Jim in Scranton said...

If eight teams from the Big 10 make it and we don't it is a shame. It's just about unbearable to watch a Big 10 game. I don't accept that there are eight deserving teams from that conference and only 2 from the SEC.

I would like to see something where if a team wins their conference tourny that otherwise wouldn't have made it to the NCAA, then that conference loses an at-large bid. USC shouldn't get in at the expense of a deserving team from another conference. That bid should be taken from a Pac-10 team like Arizona.

11:16 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Barkley,

We're about 10 slots shy under the current format, which I love -- except the play-in game. We knew the drill going in. Get rid of the play-in game and this deal is almost perfect.

11:17 AM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Jet, you're just better at accepting reality than I am.

You're right, but opportunities like this for Auburn basketball don't come around very often. I just wish we could take advantage of it. It could be five more years before we are even back in the discussion.

11:22 AM
Blogger Kris said...

The sad thing is that once again, Auburn missing out on the big dance will be marked by another "first" in SEC atheletics. If Auburn indeed is shut out, it will mark the first time an SEC team has won 10 or more conference games and not made it. That being said being the first SEC basketball team to win 10 or more in conference and not getting to dance is not near as disappointing as being the first (and likely last) SEC football team (in the BCS era) to win all of their games and not get to play for the crystal football. Like Rodney Dangerfield said, "we can't get no respect".

11:36 AM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

I know a lot of people are jumping on the Lebo bandwagon, but I think he still has a lot to prove. He's been here long enough to get a group of seniors that should be able to make a run, and we're still just a bubble discussion team.

We lose Vot this year, and we are already a really small team. It could be ugly next year, which means Lebo could be right back on the hot seat.

11:36 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Barkley, Glad your jail time wasn't too bad. I get analytical after we lose. I see us being relevant next year. Need another good recruiting year.

11:40 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Frankie can move into the Tez role, Hargrove into the Barrett role, and I feel good about Knox. With the transfers and signees, I'm hopeful. Kris, I don't view this as near the shame as 2004 football. I'm disappointed, but I don't feel like I've been jobbed badly, either.

11:44 AM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

We lose Barber, Barrett, and Quantez Robertson. Plus, you have to figure the SEC won't be as down as it was this year.

I hope we can do something next year, but it looks to be an uphill battle.

11:47 AM
Blogger Kris said...

Me either Jet, it just pisses me off that when an SEC team gets screwed, it seems like Auburn is always the first one with their pants down.

11:48 AM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Can't they just let us in the dance out of sympathy for being screwed in football in 04?

11:52 AM
Blogger Jim in Scranton said...

I thought Lebo got outcoached by Pearl yesterday. Their strategy was to spread us out and beat us with one-on-one dribble penetration. It mostly resulted in an open 3, dunk or a foul. We have lived off of shutting down teams in man-to-man D with our quickness, but they were quicker off of the dribble. We never mixed the defenses up.

11:53 AM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

Jim, I think it was just a matter of TN getting too many second chance points. Take that away, and we probably win. Also, by not taking away the second chance points we go into a scoring contest with Tn. That is something we can't win. Game in the low 70s or in the 60s Auburn wins. I didn't see much out coaching by Perl. His players just got the loose balls and offensive rebounds. If you think about it, the seeding happened as it should have, Tn should have won the game. Plus, when you shoot lights out from 3 point range, that opens up the dribble penetration. After the first half, Auburn had to defend all over the floor, not going to be successful doing that against Tn.

I will say again, if TN plays teams that just want to score, they will do fine. They play a team like West Va, they will get beat by 10 to 15.

I understand. Todd is doing a great job of hitting the relay man.

ok, so tenn is shooting 33% from the field, 64% from the free throw line, and 20% from the three point line against mississippi state.

why couldn't that happen yesterday?

Duke will live and die by the three in the tournament.

Unfortunately, that probably won't get them very far.

I'm still so dang proud of this team, UT was just better yesterday. It's that simple. Who'd have thought that a month ago that we'd be so passionate about any of this.

Auburn basketball usually never crosses my mind this time of year.

They've entertained us.

Looks like Mississippi State may make it 3 SEC teams in the field of 65.

College basketball is a great game, but the officials calling too many fouls and coaches calling TO's every 5 seconds really take away from the flow of the game. College football is much better about letting the players determine the outcome of the game.

wow. Tennessee has played terrible, but the SEC's little agenda to get msu into the tournament makes me sick. This game was officiated horribly!

NIT for Auburn.

We're screwed now. That was the worst officiating I have ever seen and the clock operator didn't start the clock on 3 consecutive plays.

I think Tennessee could make a run depending on how the bracket works out. LSU/Miss State both get bounced in the 1st round. No doubt in my mind.

I didn't see a minute of the game ... But you could smell it a mile away.

I only saw the final 60 seconds of the game. I saw a foul against UT that shouldn't have been called and then I saw UT shove the MSU guy out of bounds with no call. I didn't see the whole game, but just saw bad officiating without agenda.

The clock operator was a UT fan (if biased) because he wouldn't run the clock.

The body contact allowed in basketball nowadays resembles a rugby scrum.....now I remember why I don't watch it.

I think iffy calls went MSU's way about 90% of the time from the opening tip until the part of the game that most people tuned in for. Who knows though...could just be me.

I love college hoops and that's why I hate it when something like that happens.

On the ESPN boards everybody is crying about all the teams the big 10 is going to be getting in in 4 hours, but they flat play defense and value the basketball. If any of our league's teams draw one of them they'll get run.

I don't think the officiating favored MS. A lot of bad calls ( especially in the last 10 seconds) that favored TN, and the clock operator was clearly trying to give TN a chance.

That Jarvis Vernado kid from MS really determined UT's shot selection. He's a defensive beast! He did what Auburn wanted to yesterday. but couldn't quite execute.
