Tennessee def. Auburn, 94-85 (SEC Tournament)
Hey everyone. I am located in drizzly Montgomery, Ala., for this epic battle between your Auburn Tigers and the Volunteers of Tennessee. Loser leaves town. Winner faces Mississippi State tomorrow for The Big Game.
Why am I in Montgomery? In short: My newspaper doesn't have a lot of money right now and a trip wasn't financially feasible.
OK. On with the show ...

Why am I in Montgomery? In short: My newspaper doesn't have a lot of money right now and a trip wasn't financially feasible.
OK. On with the show ...
- FINAL
Tennessee 94, Auburn 85. - FOURTH TO @ 3:30-ish, 2nd half
Tennessee leads, 79-71. Same stuff. Tennessee has so many second-chance points. Better hustle = better game. Simple. - THIRD TO @ 6:48, 2nd half
Tennessee leads, 72-62. Auburn's offense seems fine to me, but Tennessee keeps getting second chance on its ends. That's the product of superior hustle in my book. - SECOND TO @ 11:00-ish, 2nd half
Tennessee leads, 65-57. I'm surprised this is an 8-point game. Auburn is being outplayed in most facets right now, but the Volunteers haven't been able to levy the knockout punch just yet. The Tigers still have a decent chance here. - FIRST TO @ 15:00-ish, 2nd half
Tennessee leads, 55-47. - HALFTIME
Tennessee 47, Auburn 36. The Volunteers are getting freaky breaks right now. I just watched a possession where UT committed two turnovers, traveled twice (both on hop steps) and still scored. That was the most funky possession I've seen all year. - FOURTH TO @ 3:07, 1st half
Tennessee leads, 40-29. Wayne Chism, the UT forward, already has 16 points. Might it be time for a strategic adjustment from the Tigers' head coach? We shall see. - THIRD TO @ 7:30-ish, 1st half
Tennessee leads, 30-22. More sloppiness from the Tigers. Tennessee also has been more accurate from three-point range than expected. They're 5-of-10 at this point. - SECOND TO @ 11:57, 1st half
Auburn leads, 16-15. The Tigers are sloppifying. Five turnovers already. Aside from the early dunks, though, Tennessee hasn't had much in the way of good shots. - FIRST TO @ 15:00-ish, 1st half
Auburn leads, 12-10. The Tigers are passing very well today. They can't go body-on-body with the Vols because they're so much bigger, but Auburn can play the steal-and-run game. It's working right now. - YOUR AUBURN STARTERS

That play has been our money play all year.
Müny plåy.
We are almost in the bonus
3 on Chism, yay...one and one...no
glad rasheem's shooting FTs and not vot
Bruce Pearl has got to be one of the most sleaziest looking people in college basketball, right behind the whole Raycom staff.
twoish possessions
C'mon D!!
that would have been huge
PASS THE BALL DWAYNE REED
daggumit!
Seriously, we know we don't have to shoot 3's every time, even on a fast break, right?
Frankie has to make open 3-pointers.
This is THE SEC Championship game.
7 down with 9 to go.
fighting our tails off -- I do love this team
How was that not a foul or a travel
Just cut it to 4 and were golden, maybe.
Rebounds
Chism and Smith are just MAN HANDLING us
Nobody has done less with more talent than Bruce Perl.
We really need frankie to hit one of those open 3's. Either of the last two would have changed the game. It'd be a good time for my R.C. Hatch final 4 extraordinaire to hit one of these biggies.
Bad call on the contiunation.
Blah! Stupid refs
Shooting foul?
why does reed have the green light?
this is the NBA, you know
Auburn won't go away. And there have been many times in this game where they could have.
I meant for that to say:
MR. R.C. Hatch final 4 extraordinaire ...and sound wayy more negative.
Convert VOT, convert
Lebo needs to tell his players if they are going to foul someone then to knock them on the floor. These touch fouls are getting ridiculous.
11/13 FG's wow
Seriously, the refs are horrible in this game.
depressed...that's how this Auburn team has been. We don't go away.
oh frankie
I am so (BOOMING) pissed off
Another missed layup.
Sullivan has blown at least 2 layups so far.
I hate to say it, but this game is just out of reach.
Our frankie lovefest last night might have drained all the karma.
If they get up 12 i think it's ova
How about we make an extra pass sheesh
NIT
lost that segment by 2 -- gonna take a special 7 minutes to win it
I'm afraid UT is about to put us away if we don't start doing the easy stuff right and make better decisions on the offensive end.
Don't pack it in like the pond scum bammies did in front of the world yesterday. Keep fighting till the end!!
wild shooting will not get it done. too many down unless Tn goes nuts.
Wow Hargrove, that was ugly.
Hargrove has been out of control today.
Every bounce, every roll is going UT's way.
Even ugly shots that just get the rim roll in some how.
We really shouldn't have had to win this game to get into the tourney, but it is what it is.
I guarantee you if Kentucky was in our position they could be a lock to go dancing.
down 10
Well our pre-conference schedule isn't the best and we have some unforgivable losses out there.
Plus, we're Auburn men's basketball and our reputation is zero when it comes to making NCAA tourneys.
down 7 still, that seems insurmountable.
Weirdest thing just happened to me, my buddy from U of A called, I figures it was to make fun of auburn, he says someone wants to talk to you, Kodi Burns gets the phone says "war eagle man" I told him he was gonna be the big dog next year he's like "preciate it, me and his are gonna do big things" and that was it... So random, kinda cool
There spring breaking in Panama City
You tell 'em Andrew.
"me and gus"
It's all about the reputation, RK. Florida would have been locked up as well if they would have beat us.
What will suck is if we don't get in and they put Florida in.
garbage shots still falling for UT. unbelievable.
EVERYTHING falling for UT>
Jhag building Kodi up!
stop and a score before the break - come on
again -- why does dewayne reed have the green light?
We have to recruit some size, or we will never be good.
Speed Reed with the unnecessary three-point shot.
Never read that sentence before, have you?
Jay G, if MSU wins out or gets an at large bid because of making it to the finals, does that hurt us?
Kodi has spent too much time at harpoon harrys if he thinks he's going to do too too much.
I love him for being optomistic though.
We know whom jhag supports in The Quarterback Race, Season Duex.
12 seed in the NCAA, mark it down. Maybe an 11 seed. mark that down too. We will be one and done and they will send us to the west.
Tigerbill -- oh yeah.
An Auburn loss here probably means NIT for the Tigers. Not many at-large spots lying around these days.
our class coming in is awesome..but it's a TON more 6ft. 4 guards...
Yeah, I'm sort of a Kodi suppourter as of now.
It's been 5 years since we've had good size on the team.
How long has Lebo been the coach again?
WHY THE QUICK FOUL???!!?
a stop + a score = 2 posession game...Good Lord!
Will MSU get a bid by just making it to the final?
hope you're right coach Crum
curtains.
SOFT!!!, BALL GAME...Thanks Barber
NIT here we come.
showtime for Tn
NIT number 1 or 2 seed
This is Year Five for Lebo.
What a dive..
What is the record for driving passes on the baseline with an easy follow up dunk in one game?
The last time we put 78 on Tennessee it was enough, different this time around fellas
Thanks Jay, but I didn't need an answer to my question, just making a point.
Rasheem Barrett, never met a foul he didn't commit.
Almost a for sure #1 seed...Anybody know if that means we play home games all the way to MSG assuming we win?
..in the NIT i mean..
Yeah, Auburn just doesn't have enough size inside to beat a team like this unless they have a bad shooting day, and AU shoots lights out. If UT can shoot like this with the type of athletes they have, they could be hard to beat.
wow, what a dissapointment
That shot by Sullivan goes in for UT today, for us it just rims out. Just one of those days.
Your hearts gotta break for these seniors, man ill tell you that much
I agree 100% depressed..Depending on how the bracket shakes out UT could make a serious run this year.
(slit) (slit)
the committee always talks about finishing strong -- here's hoping that's a MAJOR component and we get a shot
either way - I'm very pleased with the program and the way this team represented Auburn
Speaking of the state of Tennessee..Memphis sure better not get a #1 seed..Louisville, UCONN, Pitt, UNC is a no brainer..No conference USA team should ever ever be a #1 seed. Conference USA is dumb.
AIR REED??!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!
That conference leading D didn't have a chance today.
we scored 85 points and lost by 9 -- if I knew we would score 85 this morning, I would have guaranteed a victory
The sound of our bubble bursting means it's beer:30
Well War Eagle anyway, let's hope for some love by the committe tomorrow.
Sadly another season gone by without a trophy.
Hornet, I hope AU makes it in, but that 2-5 record vs top 50 RPI teams is gonna hurt. I'm afraid a NIT bid won't generate much enthusiasm for the program. A NCAA bid would be big for Lebo.
True. NCAA bid is huge! I said this yesterday but being a 10 seed in Boise or Philly would be so much bigger than a deep NIT run as a 1 seed.
An NIT bid would mean 5000 people at another home game -- but I'd sure try to be one of them
I always loved coach pearl...It's in full force now after the campaign speech he just made for Auburn!
on another note. Chris Todd has been throwing the ball in workouts 40 to 45 yards and says that his shoulder feels great. That is a second hand quote from a friend that knows him and his dad.
Andrew - I've changed my tune over the last week and a half and I agree with you. BUT a trip to MSG would be a great finish for this team and its seniors
And I can hit a golf ball 300 yds
we just need all the chalk we can handle over the next 24 hours -- that's our only shot
If UT takes care of business tomorrow..and Auburn is left out..Our leage gets two teams in the tournament. When's the last time that happened? Hopefully Slive will be showing out this time tomorrow evening in indy saying his league better get at least 3.
Lunardi lists us in "first four out" -- guess he has SEC getting 2 teams
Thanks for kickin it with the peeps, everyone!
I'll be using this blog for sure as an outlet for my frustration during the selection show tomorrow Jay! Thanks for making it happen!
Thanks for the gathering place, Jay. You do great work!
on the bright side..Raycom is now gone forever!! Thank you Jesus!
Well that game sucked. Doh well.
Lunardi said previously that Auburn wasn't a consideration.
I guess that changed.
Auburn baseball report anyone?
considering I gave Lebo zero credit.
I give him congrats for what he did down the strech.
WDE...
Well Hotties I've been watching away from the house today with a group of Auburn alumni, it was a tough loss but hats off to our guys, they have played stellar ball down the stretch. Somedays teams like UT just have it clicking and today was one of those. I still think we have an outside shot at the NCAA but I won't be too disappointed if we don't make it. The NIT is a step in the right direction and we've definitely built up some nice momentum heading into next season.
jhag -- first pitch at 6
Scottie B, what's the weather look like up that way? You think they'll get the ballgame in?
I just watched the first B'Ball game I have seen in 30 years - pro or college - Even I don't think AU looked very good. But then again - I'm no expert......
LT...
Cause they didn't play good, LT.
So...do I think AU will be dancing?...no I don't think so...I base this on what happened to AU in 2004..just the way it is...that's why we are a different breed of fans..we have to be...That being said those kids deserve to be dancing and it will be shameful if they get snubbed..ok so I am a little down from the loss....WAR EAGLE HOTTIES!! here's to the committee making the right decision..cheers!!!
I watched the game on the plane to San Diego. We didn't rebound well, particularly stopping them on the offensive boards. Barrett is a key guy for us -- didn't have a good game. NIT, here we come. Which is where I thought we'd be.
Anyone have a baseball update? Did the game start? Score?
Baseball rained out, I heard
Darn.
Bryce Brown is visiting UT for spring break...it would be crazy if he and Oku sign there....yikes
Did anyone see where the wrestler known as Test was found dead in Tampa at a motel? He was days shy of his 34th birthday. Those guys average life span must be around 40 years.
Those steroids are hard on a body.
I wonder if a bunch of baseball players will be dropping dead in a couple of years.
C'mon Alabama State Hornets ... Represent for us!
I smell a State win tomorrow, anyone else?
UofL wins the big East regular season and the tourney. I predict they will be a number one seed. I further will be surprised if the Big East doesn't have 3 of 4 top seeds. If not, they will have alot of the 2 seeds. I am not too impressed with the SEC, now having said that, watch an SEC team go deep in the NCAA. Of course, it is all about match ups. For instance, if TN gets to play teams that don't value defense or physical play, then they could go far. LSU could get upset early. Any other ideas out there.
Auburn will be NIT champs, laying the foundation for a regular run at the NCAA Championship in years to come.
I am proud of how this basketball team did. They achieved much more than anyone expected. War Eagle!!!
Stil up
morning. still a bummer losing to the Vols. i'm going to really catch heat this week at work. sucks.
we need for them to beat MSU, though.
there was NO AU-UT baseball yesterday. they are going to attempt a double-header today beginning at noon CT with both being 7-inning games. i doubt i will be able to attend. it's still ugly here. if i do i'll let ya know. headed to church soon.
weagles.
morning all. frustrating game yesterday. we could never crack their 5 point lead in the second half. good run for our guys, though.
Denny, you are correct. The fact is the SEC water weak. I've watched a lot of hoops this year, and while I'm not a national championship coach such as yourself, I think my eyes are trained well enough to say the 4th best teams in the other "big" leagues would take us behind the barn and bludgeon us.
I'm proud of this team's effort, but we're a top 50-60 -- nothing better. We're an NIT team. That's OK -- for this year.
If we are a top 50-60 team we deserve to be in the tournament.
I agree with Jay Bilas on that. The best 65 teams deserve to play, regardless of anything else.
Here we come NIT.
If eight teams from the Big 10 make it and we don't it is a shame. It's just about unbearable to watch a Big 10 game. I don't accept that there are eight deserving teams from that conference and only 2 from the SEC.
I would like to see something where if a team wins their conference tourny that otherwise wouldn't have made it to the NCAA, then that conference loses an at-large bid. USC shouldn't get in at the expense of a deserving team from another conference. That bid should be taken from a Pac-10 team like Arizona.
Barkley,
We're about 10 slots shy under the current format, which I love -- except the play-in game. We knew the drill going in. Get rid of the play-in game and this deal is almost perfect.
Jet, you're just better at accepting reality than I am.
You're right, but opportunities like this for Auburn basketball don't come around very often. I just wish we could take advantage of it. It could be five more years before we are even back in the discussion.
The sad thing is that once again, Auburn missing out on the big dance will be marked by another "first" in SEC atheletics. If Auburn indeed is shut out, it will mark the first time an SEC team has won 10 or more conference games and not made it. That being said being the first SEC basketball team to win 10 or more in conference and not getting to dance is not near as disappointing as being the first (and likely last) SEC football team (in the BCS era) to win all of their games and not get to play for the crystal football. Like Rodney Dangerfield said, "we can't get no respect".
I know a lot of people are jumping on the Lebo bandwagon, but I think he still has a lot to prove. He's been here long enough to get a group of seniors that should be able to make a run, and we're still just a bubble discussion team.
We lose Vot this year, and we are already a really small team. It could be ugly next year, which means Lebo could be right back on the hot seat.
Barkley, Glad your jail time wasn't too bad. I get analytical after we lose. I see us being relevant next year. Need another good recruiting year.
Frankie can move into the Tez role, Hargrove into the Barrett role, and I feel good about Knox. With the transfers and signees, I'm hopeful. Kris, I don't view this as near the shame as 2004 football. I'm disappointed, but I don't feel like I've been jobbed badly, either.
We lose Barber, Barrett, and Quantez Robertson. Plus, you have to figure the SEC won't be as down as it was this year.
I hope we can do something next year, but it looks to be an uphill battle.
Me either Jet, it just pisses me off that when an SEC team gets screwed, it seems like Auburn is always the first one with their pants down.
Can't they just let us in the dance out of sympathy for being screwed in football in 04?
I thought Lebo got outcoached by Pearl yesterday. Their strategy was to spread us out and beat us with one-on-one dribble penetration. It mostly resulted in an open 3, dunk or a foul. We have lived off of shutting down teams in man-to-man D with our quickness, but they were quicker off of the dribble. We never mixed the defenses up.
Jim, I think it was just a matter of TN getting too many second chance points. Take that away, and we probably win. Also, by not taking away the second chance points we go into a scoring contest with Tn. That is something we can't win. Game in the low 70s or in the 60s Auburn wins. I didn't see much out coaching by Perl. His players just got the loose balls and offensive rebounds. If you think about it, the seeding happened as it should have, Tn should have won the game. Plus, when you shoot lights out from 3 point range, that opens up the dribble penetration. After the first half, Auburn had to defend all over the floor, not going to be successful doing that against Tn.
I will say again, if TN plays teams that just want to score, they will do fine. They play a team like West Va, they will get beat by 10 to 15.
Did someone on here say C Todd was throwing the ball 40 -45 yds? Was that in two throws?
Just a joke, I hope he comes back ready to compete. We need some healthy competition at QB.
I understand. Todd is doing a great job of hitting the relay man.
ok, so tenn is shooting 33% from the field, 64% from the free throw line, and 20% from the three point line against mississippi state.
why couldn't that happen yesterday?
Damn, Duke can shoot the lights out
Baseball team leads 6-0 in top of 3rd
Duke will live and die by the three in the tournament.
Unfortunately, that probably won't get them very far.
verse UT?
UNREAL Duke right now, anyone watching this?
32 days till A-Day
I'm still so dang proud of this team, UT was just better yesterday. It's that simple. Who'd have thought that a month ago that we'd be so passionate about any of this.
Auburn basketball usually never crosses my mind this time of year.
They've entertained us.
Looks like Mississippi State may make it 3 SEC teams in the field of 65.
College basketball is a great game, but the officials calling too many fouls and coaches calling TO's every 5 seconds really take away from the flow of the game. College football is much better about letting the players determine the outcome of the game.
wow. Tennessee has played terrible, but the SEC's little agenda to get msu into the tournament makes me sick. This game was officiated horribly!
NIT for Auburn.
Wow
Just Wow
We're screwed now. That was the worst officiating I have ever seen and the clock operator didn't start the clock on 3 consecutive plays.
I think Tennessee could make a run depending on how the bracket works out. LSU/Miss State both get bounced in the 1st round. No doubt in my mind.
I didn't see a minute of the game ... But you could smell it a mile away.
I only saw the final 60 seconds of the game. I saw a foul against UT that shouldn't have been called and then I saw UT shove the MSU guy out of bounds with no call. I didn't see the whole game, but just saw bad officiating without agenda.
The clock operator was a UT fan (if biased) because he wouldn't run the clock.
The body contact allowed in basketball nowadays resembles a rugby scrum.....now I remember why I don't watch it.
I think iffy calls went MSU's way about 90% of the time from the opening tip until the part of the game that most people tuned in for. Who knows though...could just be me.
I love college hoops and that's why I hate it when something like that happens.
On the ESPN boards everybody is crying about all the teams the big 10 is going to be getting in in 4 hours, but they flat play defense and value the basketball. If any of our league's teams draw one of them they'll get run.
New thread up.
I don't think the officiating favored MS. A lot of bad calls ( especially in the last 10 seconds) that favored TN, and the clock operator was clearly trying to give TN a chance.
That Jarvis Vernado kid from MS really determined UT's shot selection. He's a defensive beast! He did what Auburn wanted to yesterday. but couldn't quite execute.
i like this blog... also visit hotel in bandung god luck!!
