(Belated) Monday chatter

Hey everyone. Sorry I'm late today. Been working on a project that will run in the paper either this weekend. The topic: Looking back on former winners of the Hitchcock Award.

It's given annually to the most outstanding Montgomery student-athlete and I think it'd be cool to see what some of these former winners have done with their lives. I like that kind of stuff.

If you Montgomery-tinged HOTTIES know of an interesting Hitchcock winner or anecdote, please share.

On to Auburn...

BASEBALL IN THE TANK: Auburn was swept at LSU this weekend. It wasn't the bludgeoning some expected -- LSU is an outstanding team this season -- but losing three in a row looks bad after a mid-week loss to Samford. The team has lost nine of its last 11 games.

FOOTBALL SHOWS UP IN THE NFL DRAFT: You all know by now that three Tigers were drafted last weekend. All three players are satisfied with their draft fates. Sen'Derrick Marks really liked the Titans before the draft. Now he's with them. Jerraud Powers has to be happy with being a third-round guy and Tyronne Green, who had a poor senior season, parlayed a great Senior Bowl performance into a fourth-round pick.

THREE WINS AND HE'S A GENIUS: I generally don't comment one way or the other when it comes to the work of fellow writers. Still, I'm wholly confused about why Kevin Scarbinsky wrote, either of his own volition or at the urging of his supervisors, this column: "Matthew Stafford went No. 1? Auburn's just glad he's gone"

This is a remarkably awkward premise for a Stafford column.

STAFFORD'S CAREER vs. ALABAMA: 43-77, 495 yards, 4 TDs (in two games)
STAFFORD'S CAREER vs. AUBURN: 40-63, 671 yards, 5 TDs (in three games)

Similar numbers. Granted, Georgia was 3-0 against Auburn and 1-1 against Alabama in games Stafford started. I still don't see much of a connection at all. I know Scarbinsky enough to know he's not agenda driven, but I totally can see why Auburn fans would read that story and think: WTF?

  3. It's interesting Stafford had his worst game against AU's worst team in three years. It's also worth noting that Scarbo has been after Auburn lately, probably trying to convince the Bama fans he's partial, they all claim he's an Auburn homer.

  4. Jay, when does your Sen'derrick story run? I'm eager to read.

    ReplyDelete
  5. that was me in the stands screaming "QB draw!!!" in 2005. that is the only play they needed to run all day.

    ReplyDelete
  6. In 2005 we won...you're thinking of 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  7. are we the only ones here?

my a/c is out and the guy just got here to fix it so you are on your own sean...

  8. The Sen'Derrick story was whittled down and added to our NFL Draft coverage the other day.

    It happens sometimes.

I have spoken with him a few times since the draft. I'm aiming to keep the "draft diaries" going ... so you can see what he's up to every few weeks.

  9. It's the offseason and, you know, I expect the HABOTN to cool off a bit.

It's hard to get excited when there is NOTHING happening. Sucks, but them's the facts.

Jay, glad you had a great time at the race!

  11. Jay,
We are always reading no matter what...it's just we have to actually work once in a while during the off season to make up for all the non-work during the "real" season!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yea Jay the off season is the only time some of us can get any work done.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The Scarbinsky column rambles and seems a bit random. I mean, by the end of it he might as well have inserted a review of the new Star Trek movie. But anyway, don't you think you are being a little harsh, Jay? I mean, as an Auburn fan, I didn't find it offensive or anything. The premise didn't make me angry. And I like a lot of other Scarbinsky stuff, so I will give him a free pass on this one.

  14. Hi Jay GT & Hotties,

Paroled from prison just in time to head off to a meeting :-(

Ain't got time to cool off. This is the HABOTN!!!

  15. Jay,
I know the PC thing is to say the Hitchcock award is given to the "most outstanding student athlete". But it is really given to the male and female athletes that best exemplify Christian leadership. With the witness of the individual and the ability to influence others playing a large part in the selection. It is more of a spiritual award than and athletic one. Grades and athletics are important, but character and leadership are the qualities that are really to be recognized. I hope as you report you will question the former recipients as to their spiritual influence on others.

I'm in agreement Jay...I have no doubt that Scarbinsky is not agenda driven, but his superiors are probably another story.

It's funny, but the papers here in GA are more kind to AU than most of the papers in Auburn's home state.

    I read Scarbo's article....WTF???

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anonymous4:24 PM

Jason Crawford...I live in Ga and agree with you regarding the local press. The Bammerham and Mobile news are the most Bama-centric in the state.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The truth ...

Stafford fried our bacon as a freshman (when Brandon Cox wasn't playing horribly), and hit 2 bombs as a sophomore.

To take a gratuitous shot over that is ... well ... pretty weak. I'm surprised at Kevin. I judge him to be fair.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Scarbinsky is on board with the program apparently. Talking about Auburn in a negative light is fine. Although the thing is that Bama doesn't play Georgia every year, Auburn does.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I guess I still don't understand how it is gratuitous. Scarbinsky wrote all of 5 or 6 sentences talking about how Georgia owned Auburn while Stafford was there. This is true. Scarbinsky writes for an Alabama paper, so it makes sense that a story about the number 1 draft pick would be twisted into how it relates to Auburn and Alabama. After all, it worked. Would any of us read the article without the Auburn part? We are crazy for our Alabama and Auburn news.

What's weird to me is the seemingly random thoughts after that part. Yeah, Stafford did own Auburn, a guy wrote about it, it doesn't hurt my feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Some interesting facts about Malzahn from an Auburn Undercover article. "When Chizik interviewed for Auburn’s head coaching job, one of his selling points was that he wanted to hire Malzahn to run his offense." This is interesting. Many initially criticized the hiring of Chizik, but Malzahn was a part of the plan Chizik presented. Maybe Jacobs isn't so much of an idiot.

Also, it mentions that Chizik chose the offensive staff, not Malzahn. This is interesting because Tuberville was criticized for not allowing Franklin to choose his staff.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That is interesting that Chizik chose the offensive staff.

Ok St. is a pretty wide open offense, so those guys should fit in. I don't know anything about what the o-line coach ran. I think the chance of completely different philosophies between the position coaches and the coordinator won't be a problem, and that was the real problem last year, not the fact that Franklin didn't pick his guys.

Kind of like how my kids won't get mad at me for picking ice cream for dessert for them, but they would be mad if I picked peanut butter bread for them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would think that CGM had to sign off on them in a sense. I believe Chizik went after people he thought were strong recruiters and felt could coach on the field. I would believe he had to make sure that they were going to mesh before he got them all on board.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Michael

I was in the stands for 2 of the 3 ... the one where he owned us as a freshman ... the one where he hit 2 long passes, but relied on Moreno and Brown for the heavy lifting, and watched the one last fall where he was the QB of the team that managed to win that game.

To say Auburn fans should be happy he's gone because he owned seems gratuitous to me. I think I'm pretty thick skinned when it comes to what the folks in the papers about Auburn.

Even the unbiased observer -- our fearless leader -- has now made consecutive mentions of Kevin's last two offerings. I think it's fair to say both left Jay G scratching his head a little.

  27. I like the thought behind the limo. A lot of punches being thrown in the AL.com underworld by the bammers. I think I trust Luper's understanding of what a HS recruit would be impressed with more so than King of his Double widetrailer on AL.com. I want to take the MOB back.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like the concept of the limo. It's different and the entire state is talking about AU recruiting.

I just wish Coach Roof had worn an orange shirt. lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. my a/c repair man said he saw the limo around mobile today, but he did not know what it was until i told him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous6:03 PM

I can answer your question, Jay. Kevin wrote the article because he works and lives in Birmingham and realizes (just like Finebaum) that bashing Auburn makes more money. However, Kevin fails to realize that the audience he caters to has an 87% illiteracy rate.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not only is the limo impressive, but it's actually reasonably practical for hauling 7 mostly fairly large guys around. It's got to be cheaper than flying the jet all over the state.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I dont know what to think about the limo...its kinda cheezy

    ReplyDelete
  33. The limmo sure has a lot of people talking. Bet they really wish Nicky had as much innovation. They would never admit now that the Auburn has done it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I can see Trooper and Luper stepping out of the limo in style. Chizik and Roof, I'm having a little harder time seeing them pulling it off.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Did anybody catch the front page quote from Pat McNeil, DT from Davidson? Re: AU limo -"I like their Swagger"

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oops that quote is on Rivals.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So, should they add some 14" spinners to the limo, or would that be over the top?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I got all kind of recruiting ideas. How about have the Auburn band show up at the recruits house just prior to Chizik and play the fight song as he exits the memo? Then when he leaves they could play Elvis' exit music. Yea, someone will be impressed, although the neighbors might call the cops.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not taking anything away from Stafford, but the MVP QB for Georgia for two of the games was Brandon Cox. I think in the 2006 game Cox completed almost as many passes to Georgia as he did to our receivers.

    ReplyDelete
  40. personally, i thought they should have gone with the super stretch hummer limo. but i guess by the time they paid the gas to drive that thing all over the state, it would have been cheaper to use the AU jet.

they should all wear orange and blue tuxedos.
    that would be f'n classy!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Stafford didn't beat Auburn, Auburn beat Auburn. Stafford just happened to be the QB when that happened.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Eddie, that 2006 Georgia game convinced me that Blake Field would never see the field again for Auburn. Cox was terrible and taking a beating on top of that. I really wondered if he would make it to the Bama game.

    ReplyDelete
  43. There is one thing that you can never doubt about Brandon Cox and that is his toughness. The guy was as tough as any Auburn QB that I have seen. He took a beating and kept on playing.

    ReplyDelete
  44. if stafford played AU three times his record would be 0-3. unfortunately for AU, the rest of the uga bulldogs showed up and helped out a little.

although, i'm not 100% sure if he could not have beaten AU by himself in 2006. it didn't seem like we could tackle him that day when he ran the QB draw 30 times.

    ReplyDelete
  45. ok, so chuck knows kung fu
and now nathan petrelli is dead?
    anybody else watching?

    ReplyDelete
  46. They're always losing some new/creative way. This time it was on 2 out walks coming across the plate 2 hitters later. But that's baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love the limo idea...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Scarbinsky wrote his article that way because any other way no one reads it. Auburn people read it and are pissed. Bammers read it because it mentions Auburn. Controversy sells.

    ReplyDelete
  49. FSJ- clarify, you actually wish Nicky had come up with the limo idea, or you think it will work in UA-T's favor?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Neither..

I think it's unique...and Auburn needs to do some unique things right now.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hawks won a road playoff game. Hallelujah.

  54. hot ones, i need to consult the HABOTN technical support staff.

i have recently come across some old VHS recordings i made as a kid of the 87 & 88 iron bowls along with some other UGA and UT games AU won as well as the tie dye sugar bowl against syracuse. i watched some of the the 87 IB yesterday and it seems to be in good condition considering the tapes have been in my parents garage forever.

i tried dubbing them to DVD using my parents north korean made off-brand VHS/DVD player with little success. it kept randomly giving an error saying the program was copyright protected, however, i do not think the copyright protection signal was invented yet in 1987. it is more likely the equipment i am using is a piece of crap.

what is the easiest way to put these VHS tapes on DVD besides paying someone else to do it?

i am probably slightly above average when it comes to using computers and electronics so i think i can handle it. i have an imac with imovie and idvd if i can just get the original video onto the computer in a readable format. i always hate having to search around for solutions to problems like this that i am unfamiliar with and do better if someone experienced just tells me what to do or gets me headed in the right direction. i am determined to get better working with video and these games would be a good simple starter with the editing and dvd creation tools i have at my disposal. i hope to be able to reward any helpful solutions with a copy of one or some of the games without the express written consent of CBS etc.

my first intuition tells me to go buy a better VHS/DVD player/recorder and try again. then dump the DVD video onto the mac and edit away. i also have a 20 GB hard drive video camera that i may be able to hook up to a device and record to.

any and all suggestions and links to info will be appreciated.
i apologize in advance if i repost this tomorrow so more folks might see it and provide help.

the freakiest part of the whole thing is seeing all those old 80s commercials...yeesh

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sorry chip chip, I have no idea bud.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Might I also add that Scarbinsky has bee very douchey lately. Some person also wrote as an alleged AU fan in soundoff last week that UCLA is a "national power year in and year out" and how big of a mistake it was that we didn't play them. That is ignorance at it's finest. REALLY? Give me a break. AU needs to learn how to beat unranked SEC teams at home and go from there.

  69. "Stafford fried our bacon as a freshman (when Brandon Cox wasn't playing horribly)"

    Jet, I strenuously object.

Yes Stafford's QB draw killed us over and over in 2006, but Brandon throwing completing 4 passes to UGA and only 3 to his own team did far far more damage.

Stafford and UGA was having an awful year that year and they killed us.

The next year we had them in a shoot out in the middle of the 3rd quarter up 20-17 and all of the sudden Cox started throwing them the ball and our D quit.

    ReplyDelete
  70. 'Sup Hotties? A good day to you all. Even Jet.

  72. RK ...

I guess I didn't write clearly. I think we're on the same side of the argument ... I think Scarbo was over the top. Stafford did his share as a freshman (give him his due had a great game), and had the two big throws the next year, but to say we need to have a party because he's gone is too much.

I'm happy for him because he looks just like my nephew, so I'm hoping if I'm anywhere with my nephew, someone will buy us dinner.

The one player I can remember being glad he was gone was Matt Jones. Even when we beat him, he nearly beat us -- thanks for the holding calls, refs.

    ReplyDelete
  73. And a pleasant good morning to you, GaTiger ... ya jack@$$.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thanks Jet. It's sentiment like that that gets me every time. You're my favorite. But favorite what...

  75. Jet- You don't like Matt Jones and I don't like Fred Talley.

    ReplyDelete

Fred ain't on my Christmas list, either. And as for Saban, well, I'll just let that pass.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Alright Jet, here's another for you, I don't like Robert Gibbs. For that matter, I don't care for his boss either so there's that.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hey guys,

Living down here in Mobile I can tell you the limo trick worked. Plain and simple. The new staff is creative and hungry things we havent had in such a long time. Mobile is fertile recruiting ground. The kids at the public schools like, Davidson, Murphy, Blount, Vigor, Williamson. They all produce athletes year after year. If we can get on that train again and get our foot back in the door, which I think we have. Then I feel things will be on the up and up.

I applaud the manuver and I think it served its purpose.

  86. We reordered our 2009 season football tickets last week. We were up against the wall top row, opposite end of the new scoreboard. Wife and I moved due to some douches that thought they were extras in the movie old school. Wife and I couldnt watch the game due to vomiting over the railing, excessive gas, odor, minature bottles and double F bombs. I like to have a drink and get into the game but these guys were not good for the tigers. All people that bought tickets to sit in the area quickly moved. So this year we bit the bullett and upgraded and moved down a whole section. Dont ask me the color, but due to the economy we figured we would get some good seats someone gave up. So bye bye douche bags. Money well spent.

    ReplyDelete
  87. FYI,

If any of those douches read this blog. There is a reason you are all wearing jorts with no women at 37.....take that in...slowly.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I think you just described a good portion of the student section...

    ReplyDelete
  89. Minus the 37 and jorts part.

    ReplyDelete
  90. It's expected in the student section. Not so much where the grown ups sit.

    ReplyDelete
  91. PDWT- Maybe you should buy season tickets at Jordan-Hare instead of Bryant Denny.

    ReplyDelete
  92. We try to leave those classless shenanigans to our neighbors to the north.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Drats, beaten by Eddie again.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Speaking of Season Tickets, this is my first year to buy season tickets since I was in high school, and I must say that it may be the last time. I hardly ever miss a game, and I know I can spend less money than what I just spent and get into every game with probably better seats. I don't know why I let my friend talk me into it.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Sometimes I'm so dumb I'm stupid. Didn't know what jorts were. Here's the Urban Dictionary def:

Jean shorts. Worn mostly by children and douchebags. Jorts are perhaps the easiest way to recognize people you will not like. If you wear jorts, you probably don't talk to girls.

Haven't I seen a pic of Tebow in jorts?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Yeah but Tebow is Tebow, the heisman trophy offsets jorts.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Eddie...
It depends on what kind of season we're having as to which is cheaper. Plus you're paying for the convenience of not having to hunt down tickets every week.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Eddie,

I would say most-86% of the fans at Jordan Hare are great people, but in my section, there are about 6 guys that fit the bill. Everyone that uses my tickets comments on them and says howe bad they are. No, Bryant Denny thats 85% of the fans that wear jorts and act that way. My mom lasy got the finger and cussed out by many for wearing her auburn shirt to the iron bowl.

    Its just percentages

  107. PDWT- I agree with you, I just couldn't help myself.

ehyou- The year affects the price, but I went to every game (home, away, SEC Championship & Bowl) in 2004 except Mississippi and I am spending roughly $200 more to attend all those games than this year. I agree with the convience fee, but it's not worth the premium, especially with the lousy scheduling in my opinion.

  126. say what you will about strippers, but they always smell great

    ReplyDelete
  127. Well, I use to think that Greg Knox might have been the problem with our passing game the last 3 seasons. After reading a story on Auburn Undercover about some comments Knox made as MSU's runningback coach, I have changed my mind. They guy isn't quite fully backed. He stated that he has 3 runningbacks at MSU that are as good as he has been around. Well, it looks like he has three Ronnie Browns or three Cadillac Williams or three Rudy Johnsons. Ummm, forget the defibrillators, he is already brain dead.

  128. W/ strippers, just make sure to keep the windows closed or you'll let all the stank out...giggity.

  129. Sounds like normal "coach speak" to me

    ReplyDelete
  130. I guess Knox decided in favor of the frontal labotomy instead of the bottle in front of me.

Coach Nutt, is that what you're calling yourself now after that unpleasantness with the text messages?

Hope you don't get yourself into a "Quagmire" in Oxford like you did in Fayetteville.

  132. i guess he had WRs as good as florida's and lsu's while he was at AU. maybe he did, but they didn't play like it because of poor coaching. i was just thinking the other day how i will be watching MSU RBs next season to see if they fall off a cliff in terms of production.

although, players have been known to succeed in spite of knox's coaching, but they didn't exactly set the world on fire either. see: obomanu, aromashoudu, taylor and mix

  133. Jet- Knox also said "The Replacements" was the best movie he had ever seen

    ouch.

  135. Give me three Ronnie Browns and I will see you in Atlanta. We shall see how wise Knox is very quickly.

Steve, Knox has to say something like that. Coach talk for, "We don't know who is worse so we are going to try to start all 3."

    Monica,

That "mission accomplished" reminded me of when BWBush was on that aircraft carrier saying the same thing.

Tad premature unless the goal was to be swag-fabulous. Then, I suppose it is accomplished.

  146. I just had a brilliant idea. The NCAA limits the number of coaches that can be recruiting this time of year, but they don't limit the number of white stretch limos with Auburn logos on them that can be on the road. They should hire about a half dozen of the limos and have them drive around the state.

    Quick poll:

Who will make the most immediate impact on their new team?

    Andre Smith - Bengals
    Glen Coffee - 49ers
    A. Caldwell - Texans
    R. Johnson - Cardinals

    S. Marks - Titans
    J. Powers - Colts
    Ty. Green - Chargers

    ReplyDelete
  150. Andre because I bet he starts from day one.

    JMO.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Andre Smith should make the most difference, at least he better in the Bengals eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I do like Marks to the Titans and Johnson to the Cardinals.

    ReplyDelete
  153. agreed. Smith is the only one of those likely to start from day 1

    ReplyDelete
  154. Harrison - especially for you (but the rest of you Hotties feel free to clicky the linky):

They'll kill you and steal your soul

    ReplyDelete
  155. i bet he didn't even have robot insurance. That's what he gets for working with a robot

    ReplyDelete
  156. Not gonna prosecute the robot!?! I demand justice.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Sensi ...

The answer is John Parker Wilson, who will throw 3 TD's in his first start for the Birmingham Wildfire.

    ReplyDelete
  158. There are two NHL game 7's tonight. I hope THT's head doesn't explode from excitement.

    ReplyDelete
  159. The reason why the robot won't be prosecuted is because the victim is suffering with The Stockholm Syndrome.

  167. Don't I get some sort of award for showing restraint?

    ReplyDelete
  168. and of course, I was lying. It could get a whole LOT better. An east coast game 7 and a west coast game 7 would be so much better because it would provide 6 consecutive hours of hockey. Maybe I'll get lucky and there will be a 5 OT game tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Mon..
I felt like I had to jump on it before you.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I think you're talking about something else, ehyou.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Andre will make the most immediate impact on his new team. They are planning to release (if they haven't already) one of their starting OT's... Andre will slide into that role and probably be forced to start day 1. By default, he will make the most immediate impact on his new team... Whether it is a positive impact is yet to be determined.

If you were to ask who would make the most positive impact on their new team, I would say either Marks or Rashad Johnson.
Marks fills a need and the Titans DL is very well coached. R Johnson will not have to play every down, but will be put into specific situations that will allow him to succeed with the Cards.
