Looking ahead to A-Day, Part II

Hey everyone. I'm in suburban Louisville, Ky., for a family event that was non-negotiable. You know that. You also know I won't be attending A-Day for the same reason. So it goes.

Our man Josh "Bag" Moon will be on the scene and will provide blanket coverage of this fine event.

Before we get started, here are the facts about A-Day.

Time: 1 p.m.
Place: You Know Where
Tickets: $5. Bring cash or checks if you plan to buy at the gate. Credit not accepted.
Television: Live on CSS. It'll re-air on Sunday and Tuesday, 6 p.m.
Radio: WKKR (97.7 FM) in Auburn
Other stuff: Autograph session with The Head Coach, The Assistant Coaches and players will be held after the event.

Now we may get to business. What other items of relevance are worth watching tomorrow? Here are a few non-player issues I find intriguing:
  • Line of scrimmage: We've heard plenty this spring about how the defensive front has overpowered the offensive front once stunts and blitzes are in play. How big is that advantage? Auburn's offensive line will be in the spotlight today.

  • The feel of Malzahn's attack: The Tigers' new offensive coordinator has gone to great lengths to differentiate his attack from what Tony Frankin attempted to run in 2008. How big is the difference? Look for more play-action runs. As for the passing, expect more deep throws. What to expect beyond that? I have no idea.

  • Coaches' behavior: Gene Chizik said all nine assistants will spend their afternoon on the sideline. It'll be interesting (to me, at least) to see how some of these guys interact with players in real-time situations. If I had to choose, I'd keep my binoculars focused on Trooper Taylor and Jay Boulware. They seem most likely to become entertainingly animated.

  • The crowd: Big? Average? Are Auburn fans really geeked about things overall?

  • Other things: After watching Auburn operate under Tommy Tuberville's tutelage for 10 seasons, what looks different? Do players appear to hustle on and off the field more often? Do the huddles look different? Is Meerkat Manor officially over? Do the offensive tackles use two- or three-point stances more often? How does the team operate as a unit?

  1. This will be the first A-Day with the wacky scoring system since Brother Oliver was the DC, correct? I always hated that system.

What is the wacky scoring system?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Oh boy ... 1 more day till Onterio can flaunt his stuff

  5. Defense gets:
    7 points for a TD
5 points for creating a turnover
    4 points for a sack
3 points for a blocked FG
    2 points for eliciting a three-and-out
    2 points for a tackle-for-loss
1 point for a blocked PAT

You're expecting big things from him, aren't you, jhag?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Anonymous10:20 AM

So, it could possibly be a blowout defensively?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Luv it goes like this (from The Gold Mine)

The offense will get 6 points for a touchdown, 3 points for a field goal, 2 points for an ``explosive play'' (15 yards or more), 2 points for three consecutive first downs; and 1 point for a kick conversion.

The defense will get 7 points for a touchdown, 5 points for a turnover, 4 points for a sack, 3 points for a blocked field goal, 2 points for three-and-outs, 2 points for a tackle-for-a-loss and 1 point for a blocked PAT.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Offense gets the usual points, though there is a two-point bonus for stringing together three consecutive first downs and plays that exceed 15 yards.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'd expect the defense to "win," yes.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I asked this in the last thread, but it got lost somewhere in the 600 comments.

Will this be streamed on the net anywhere? I don't get CSS where I live

    ReplyDelete
  12. I am not familiar with the term "play-action runs." Normally play-action refers to a fake run. Is this yet another Malzahn innovation?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Play Action Run = Kodi play actions, gets scared, runs for 2 yard loss.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Also, a goal is scored when the football is propelled through the goal posts at any height (including above the height of the posts) by way of a kick from the attacking team. It may fly through on the full or bounce through, but must not have been touched, on the way, by any player from either team. A goal cannot be scored from the foot of an opposition (defending) player. A goal is worth 6 points.

    ReplyDelete
  15. mrdude: I don't think so.

play-action runs: A non-sensical term used by me to explain an offense I haven't seen ... but believe to be a spread offense that runs a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Defense is gonna murder Malzahn's boys...
And Onterio, yeah I'm gonna cling to him as The Last Hope for our offense

    ReplyDelete
  17. Also, also, the try is worth four points . To successfully score a try, the ball must be placed on the ground within the designated in-goal area (or on the try-line itself) by applying positive downward pressure with the hand or forearm without losing control of the ball. This is referred to as grounding the football. If the player scoring the try is also being tackled at the same time, the try must be completed before or at the moment the tackle is completed.

  20. He recently won an eBay bid for a case of Jolt Cola.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Finally, a single is scored when the ball becomes dead in the possession of a team in its own goal area, or when the ball touches or crosses the dead-line, or side-line-in-goal, and touches the ground, a player, or some object beyond these lines as a result of the ball having been kicked from the field of play into the goal area by the scoring team. It is worth one point. This is different from a Safety in that the team scored against receives possession of the ball after the score.

    ReplyDelete
  22. David you now need to define an "ace" and how it is scored.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm not going to lie, I'm confused.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I told you the scoring system was wacky!

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's actually scoring rules from Australian rules football, rugby, and Canadian football, respectively.

I haven't even started the CalvinBall references.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Seanzie, an ace is scored when a player serves the ball and it rolls into the hole without intervention by the receiving player.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I bet the more meaningful alum don't approve of the wacky scoring system, maybe they do, I have do idea!

    ReplyDelete
  28. wow

Jay G. are you IN this wedding or well dressed guest?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well-dressed guest.

I had no choice. I can't stress that enough. I can't believe I won't be at A-Day -- the first signficiant Auburn football event I've missed since 1999 -- but this is where I am.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's oKAY JAY! You the man

    ReplyDelete
  31. Don't worry about it, Jay. You're still the man around here!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yea. It happens. Thanks for the support!

    ReplyDelete
  33. A person I know in the ticket office guessed the crowd would be around 40,000. Would that be considered an enthusiastic response or not?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous10:57 AM

    HIGHLY enthusiastic!

Monica, Jay G will be the sharpest dressed man there, after the groom, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Moved from other thread, sorry.

How's this for a conspiracy theory?

Caudle is THE QB. At least, he is clearly the choice of those who participated in spring drills.

Conveniently gets injured 36 hours before A-Day. Perhaps he is "too injured" to play in the game.

Burns will be given the opportunity Saturday to play himself out of the deal once and for all.

    Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anything better then last years attendance would be considered a success, we all can agree on that,

I mean we were 5-7 last year and our coach was 5-19...
I think AU fans get high expectations fairly easy... I'm not gonna say if that's a good or bad thing

    ReplyDelete
  37. Caudle really isn't playing Saturday? What the

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jet, I am a black helicopter type of man. Makes sense to me. I'm still trying to decide if Caudle being "the man" is good news or bad news.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think Caudle could be a good QB. But only if the coaches make him come to the line of scrimmage, point at the Mike linebacker, and say to himself, "don't throw it to him."

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jhag ...

Don't know if he's playing or not ... just know he "got hurt" last night as did Trotter.

But if he's the best I've got, and not very good yet, I think I'd be duck-taping him to the sideline and sending the other guys out there to flop around. Give us hope that we've got something better we're not showing kinda thing.

The only thing worse than 2 bad QBs is 3 bad QBs.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I wouldn't want to get THAT look either. Wedding was a good call.

Luv - I agree. Jay G. is always a sharp dressed man.

    ReplyDelete

Luv..my new avatar represents Meerkat Manor.

JGT...going to the wedding should garner you around 10,000 spousal points. I suggest that you get the coupon while still in Ky. In my household spousal points tend to disappear from the account unless I have a coupon.

I won't be attending the ADay game, but at least will be accruing spousal points.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hoopie, I'm taking the father in law with me to A-day game. So I will be cashing in spousal points and generating them at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hoopie ...

Thanks for telling me Spousal Points accrued. Shoot, I thought they disappeared 11:59 p.m. on Sundays.

You, sir, have performed a great service to mankind.

  79. Meercat is a reference to the OL last year, rising up and looking back over their shoulders to the sideline to get the play.

They looked like the meercats on "Meercat Manor."

    ReplyDelete
  80. awk...
Our offense resembled meerkats last season when they would all pop their heads up to get the play. Meerkat groups singularly look in the same direction at the slightest sounds.

    ReplyDelete
  81. AWK - doin' the meerkat, is the point where the offense lined up, got set, then stood up wathcing the coaches and other folks on the sideline gyrate. The point where the offense stopped and looked over without a clue as to what was going on, is the meerkat portion.

I do believe it is at that point that the defense realized it was an off tackle run for minus two yards that was being called.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Drats, beat again.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hi, you're just hurtin' yourself with this rambunctious behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Son, you got a panty on your head.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Meerkat Manor was kind of entertaining. I kept waiting for a trick play where they snap the ball while most of the offensive linemen are looking to the sideline.

    ReplyDelete
  86. You know Steve, I was always hoping that they at one point wouldn't even turn. Since the opposing defense never got ready until after the meerkat, they were pretty much just walking around unawares. It would have been cool just come up to the line, just snap it and run up the middle for about ten or fideen yards just to keep the other folks honest. That however wasn't to be.

    ReplyDelete
  87. To add to your "Other" section: Will the DB's turn their head and try to make a play on the ball?!?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Well, we were a shade predictable last year.

Defenses just had to fill their gaps and chase to the motion side. Every single time.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Personally, I like the wacky scoring system. The only problem I see with it is how we talk the other 12 teams we play this season to allow these points. If so, I think we have a chance of going undefeated.

    ReplyDelete
  90. My all-time favorite play ... and we ran it a bunch with Kodi ... the outside option to the short side of the field.

There's nothing like running full speed toward the edge of a cliff.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Steve,

It's how we beat State 3-2 last year.

  92. Got a name for people like you, Hi. That name is called recidivism.

    Ree-peat O-fender.

Not a pretty name, is it, Hi?

  95. You know where to find me. In the Maricopa County Maximum Security Correctional Facility for men. State Road 31 Tempe Arizona. I'll be waitin!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think the Franklin Experience should get more credit. I am working on my telling of the tail for my grandkids.

Back in 2008 we brought in a new offensive coordinator that installed an offense like nothing I have seen before. First, he had all our big powerful linemen slim down. He then had them look to the sidelines before each snap as if to ask, what do we do? The center would then snap the ball. The QB would fake a hand off, pretend to go back to pass. The offensive linemen would provide lookout blocks. Then the QB would run for his life. The OC then explained how big of an idiot he was. The end.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Can we leave work now?!? Please?!?!?!

    No, sir, no way.

'Cause we just want to hear the truth.

Well, then I guess I am telling you what you want to hear.

Boy, didn't we just tell you not to do that?

    Yes, sir.

I'm wearing my HABOTN shirt to A-Day, but if you come up to me and say, "are you Aubie?" I will deny everything!
Then, you will wonder, "was that Aubie, or did the dude really not know what I was talking about."

I love a well thought out diabolical plan.

  115. Aubie ...

We know you'll be wearing your prototype orange jersey.

  116. Aubie, i would rather you wear that big red-assed monkey suit if you can

    ReplyDelete
  117. Quick thoughts
    - Michael, you have the funniest blog on the planet. One part of me wants to know you, but the other part of me wants to run.
    - Jay, for the love of all that is holy, ban Salsa Shark now! Send him back to al.com and Auburn Undercover where he can flame all day.
    - The Pina Colada song may be the cheesiest song in the history of songs. The dude is trying to cheat on his "lady" with his own "lady". Then they laugh about it. He should be kicked in the nads.
    - Favorite Raising Arizona quote
Do these balloons blow up into funny shapes?
    Not unless round is funny.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I am going to wear my red arse monkey suit with my prototype orange HABOTN jersey.

  129. YoungPJ - it takes months of planning and tons of effort for me to make 1 game during a season. Not worth all the trouble to make it to practice.

Aubie - Just let me go to Walmart and get all the packages ready. I'll sell them to you at the discount price of $14 per pack. You should make quite a profit at the concert.

  146. I'll try to say hilarious things but when I get boozed up most of my jokes usually offending someone and I end up having to call their boyfriend/ husband/ kindegarten teacher and apologize.

  147. I just had the pleasure of enjoying Robert Dunn's musical exploits online. You should too.

    Google Dunncity Goose and Paton.

  148. church blogger = funny

  149. Goldberg - Trotter has torn ACL.

That for sure narrows down the QB race.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I read the article. Anyone else concerned over the number of knee injuries on that list?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Wow Trotter out with an ACL injury. It looks like one of incoming QBs might get a serious look after all

    ReplyDelete
  152. Anyone seen a list of the projected recruits who will be in attendance besides lattimore?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Wow, I learn so much from HABOTN, and now I know why Jay hasn't banned me.

By the way Jay, I agree with your banning philosophy. In general, I think we can use peer pressure to beat people into submission. Resistance is futile and also voltage divided by current.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I saw a long list of recruits showing up this weekend somewhere. It may have been PM on Undercover. The list was very extensive and it looked like there were a half dozen or so offensive linemen.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I was looking for a list as well.

  156. http://auburn.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=109&tid=122533951&mid=122533951&sid=884&style=2

I went ot rivals to look at visitors and in the bunker (not a member) they have a list. To long to past here and I think Jay might not like it. Hopefully this link will get you there.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Three names that I was hoping to see on a list are WR Jeremy Richardson, LB Barry James and LB
LaDarius Owens but I hear that they will be at the evil empire's game. That really sucks because these kids grew up AU fans. I know it doesnt mean that bama is a leader for them anymore than 5* Marcus Lattimore coming here means that for us but I sure ish they were in AU tomorrow.

  158. sucks for trotter, but this won't affect his playing time this fall. Zero is still zero, you know?

  161. I can't believe ESPN is televising the Bama A-Day game. We should all go to it wearing orange and blue. That would teach them. Each time the scored a touchdown, we could scream touchdown Auburn, too. That works for me.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Reggie hunt and Ken Adams also.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Thanks WTC! I wish I recognized more names on that list.

    ReplyDelete
  164. From what I have seen, it appears the Auburn coaches are getting top notch talent to visit. I read somewhere about one of the best RBs in the nation coming for a visit, and it wasn't the guy from Texas. It is an SC boy.

If this staff can coach, we should be pretty good in 2 or 3 years.

    ReplyDelete
  165. 5* RB Marcus Lattimore is coming. He cancelled his visit to the LSwho spring game to come to the ours.

    ReplyDelete
  166. so trotter's injury was non-contact. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Just saw the vid on AL.com..

what is up with Lup and the tongue thing??? it is like a nervous tic..

    ReplyDelete
  168. Sucks ace for Trotter!

    ReplyDelete
  169. Trotter will be the next Brandon Cox and stay at Auburn until hes like 24

    ReplyDelete
  170. True stories told here though

    ReplyDelete
  171. When did Trotter get the injury? Could that be what's narrowed down the QB race, or was it after the staff had already decided on Burns and Caudle?

    ReplyDelete
  172. Trotter has the same luck that Brodie Croyle had.

I know one of Croyle's knee injuries was non contact and I think the one in high school was too. Hope Trotter gets well soon.

With that said, I hope your team has their biggest win of 2009 on Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Also...All you other Bama fans should behave.

You are giving me a bad name over here.

    ReplyDelete
  174. does anyone know if dish network has CSS?

Years ago when I lived in Huntsville we had a group of Auburn and Alabama friends that could kid without getting mad or
or saying stupid or hurtful things. Haven't found that here in the Gadsden area.
I live a short distance from the southside bridge off of Whortbend Rd.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Whortonbend is the correct spelling

  181. digger,

You aren't looking close enough. I live in Rainbow City...We have a great group of Bama and Auburn fans. We talk trash to each other but it's all in good fun.

i just got the 2005 sugar bowl in the mail from netflix...guess i can watch that in replace of a-day.

    ReplyDelete
  183. We had some pretty good fans both ways when I was working but now I am retired and due to circumstances with my wife I do not get out as often so I have to put up with a couple neighbors that we don't talk football.

    ReplyDelete
  184. i've watched one drive of the 05 sugar bowl and i saw more big plays than i did all of last year...so depressing
