  3. I found it interesting how the players have bought in to the o so quickly.

i hate to say it sounds a little like a re-run from last year..... makes me a little nervous.

Saving grace, gus has his own team to work with...

    ReplyDelete
  4. It does sound like a re-run from last year, but these folks are actually marching to the same beat...now whether it actaully works in the fall is another story.

  5. It's the refresh key. Don't act like you don't use it. I hear you like to push buttons.

  6. I'm kinda into Real Housewives of New York City now.

    Just saying.

    I love bitchy girls.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I used to watch Real Housewives of Atlanta, then I went to the Lenox mall, I now have no need to watch the show.

  8. Jay G,

If so, you'd LOVE my house.

  9. Montgomery residents - what are your thoughts on the "Tim Tebow Act" that is before the legislature today?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jay, I have to say I'm a little dissapointed in you. I am fervonlenty against men watching that show.

Oh well, I predict you will fully redeem yourself in my eyes when the next practice report comes out.

Is it still raining up there?

    ReplyDelete
  11. this topic is open to non-Montgomery residents as well....

    ReplyDelete
  12. hornet, what is the Tim Tebow Act?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Jay G, you have saddened me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Nm, I found the reader's digest version of the TTB...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Tim Tebow Act allows home schooled students to compete in athletics at their local public high school

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tim Tebow Act would allow home schoolers to participate in sports, band, etc., at the schools for which they are zoned. It's how Timmy T. got to play for Nease HS in Florida.

It had a public hearing this a.m. before the Senate Education Committee -- votes are never taken at Senate public hearings.

In my measured opinion, the bill has as much chance seeing as Tony Franklin serve as Hugh Nall's right had man at the trucking company.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't like the Tim Tebow act, I have no reason to not like it, I just don't. No offense to anyone who was home schooled, but I've never met one who wasn't socially awkward.

    ReplyDelete
  18. WareagleRK, but don't you think the social akwardness could be helped by playing sports at the local high school?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm against it - high school teams are SCHOOL teams, not community teams. Also, regulating eligibility with differing academic standards would be a nightmare.

Imagine this scenario.....super-stud athlete is failing algebra and english and won't be eligible. He withdraws and homeschools and is magically eligible again.

Now if he's 6'8" and lives in Chelsea....

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm sure it couldn't hurt, but he's only getting one aspect of social interaction, and sometimes football isn't the best place to learn your social skills.

I remember a home schooled kid trying out for a Pony League (I think it's age 12-13 ) baseball team that I was on. He showed up for the 1st day of practice with one of those plastic gloves that comes with the kids wiffle ball set. Seriously, a plastic wiffle ball glove.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think Wake had a decent point, Hornet you also make an excellent point. Another thing to consider is, you could get around zoning and other things by pulling kids out and moving around...seems like an easy way to break the no "recruiting" rule in HS.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm sure it's a rule that would get greatly abused more then it would be used for the good of the kid.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tebow had plenty of other social interaction going on, I think it's the parents' responsibility to make sure their children are getting the propper exposure and sports are a great way to do it but not the only way.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hornet,

I'm conflicted. Fundamentally, I want kids who go to the school to play for the school. But the schools DO belong to the community. Even though I fork out thousands for my two to attend private school in the Gump, I'm paying my share for the public schools, and so are the home schooler parents.

This could benefit schools like Chelsea more than the public schools in Montgomery where parents are not going to send their kids to play ball at one of the four "zoned" schools in Montgomery.

Bottom line, the bill is going nowhere anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jay..

I agree..I love bitchy girls too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hornet, they do it down here in Florida and have for years and I've never seen any problem like that. I would imagine there is a rule against switching during a season.

Would you have a problem against a student dual enrolling for two classes, say P.E. and health, and competing in athletics.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think if you want to play a school sport, or participate in a school sanctioned event, then you should attend that school.

I have never liked the idea of homeschooling. I've never met a homeschooled kid that was socially well adjusted, and for the most part their education, time management skills, and overall personal skills seem to be lacking in most cases (I'm sure there are a few exceptions).

    ReplyDelete
  28. I knew several kids who were taking advantage of this in high school, and none of them were abusing the system. Their parents all homeschooled for whatever reason, but they still enjoyed athletics and wanted to play in high school. In some sports finding good leagues outside of school is easy to do, in others its alot harder (especially without spending big bucks). I don't see not allowing a kid to play football because he is homeschooled.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think it is a good idea to let homeschooled kids play sports. It would stink to not be allowed t0 play football because you parents don't want you to go to a public school.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jet - I don't buy the "we pay taxes" argument. Kids don't "deserve" to play sports because their parents pay taxes. Your taxes are there to educate the public to improve YOUR society so you definitely benefit even if your kids don't attend the public school.

That wasn't your argument but it is the argument of many. Kids should be attending the school to be involved in extra-curriculars at that school.

By the way, I'm a private school kid so I get that side of it too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wake - I'm not talking about switching schools. The theoretical student in my argument came back to the same school -- he just became academically eligible by homeschooling.

    ReplyDelete
  32. michael - then send them to private school

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thats what I meant, I would imagine you would not be allowed to go from enrolled to homeschooled or vice versa during the season.

I'm sure there are safe gaurds against all of the abuses ya'll are bringing up. I am in no way familiar with the rules. But like I said they do have it hear and I've never heard of any issues.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Seriously, how many parents are qualified to teach algebra, trig, calculus, chemistry, biology, english, etc?
The parent might really be qualified to teach 1 aspect, but they aren't qualified to teach everything a child should learn in HS.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks for some (token) support FSJ.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wake - if you're in Florida, all of the homeschool associations are required to have the same academic standards (grad exam, state course of study, etc.) as the state board of education. That is currently not the case in AL and would definitely have to be changed.

    ReplyDelete
  37. There is a time and place for a "bitchy" girl.
"Always" is not the time and a mall is not the place.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I was going to ask what the standardized test standards were in Alabama and how would that fit in with homeschoolers being academically eligible...but Hornet beat me to it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. As long as they can pass the same test the government school kids do... Nothing should trump a parents right,.,,ever.

    and from an earlier thread...
lets not talk about pushign buttons when I got a rocket on a launch pad! =0)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Dmiller, there are so many options available to parents. Online classes, co-op classes and the curriculum they have available is so vastly supperior to what is in the public schools, you don't have to be a whiz to teach it.

I'm not really a homeschool supporter, doubt I would ever do it with my kids. And I see the socially inadequate kids that all of you see, but it can be done right, with the kids getting plenty of socialization. And its nto very hard to one up the education you recieve in public school. I actually saw an article recently whwere colleges look for kids who were homeschooled, said they have a far better educational base.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have NEVER met a child from home schooling that was not light years ahead of thier peers in almost every aspect of learning and social development. I have known dozens of them all over the country.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dear Leader we talkin this country or Korea here?

I hear korean homeschooling programs include lessons on how to build and launch your own Nukes, pretty cool if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have seen/known hundreds of kids that have gone twelve years in government schools and have ZERO social skills and at best a basic comprehension of the course they completed.

Home Schooling is a red herring for the gov. schools ... takes the light of non performance off them. once they start graduating 90%+ country wide I will actually entertain their arguments about home schooling.

    My rant is done.

ps my kids do not go to home schooling, I just support parents rights.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wakeriderof87 ...

I actually thought of clarifying that... =0)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Maybe we ought to look into "home college-ing." Perhaps we can find some OL depth.

Or at least a good long snapper.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Parents do have rights... But, they also have responsibilities.
Just my opinion, and I realize everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however wrong they may be.
But, I don't feel that any parent is fully qualified to give their child a well rounded education comparable to what the child could obtain in an organized school setting (private or public).
There is also more to gain from attending a school than just the book learned education. Life skills and social skills are learned. Those things are just as important in the 'growing up' process as what you get from a classroom/lecture.

DL, go ahead and fire the rocket. It won't get far.

    ReplyDelete
  47. what happend to the 12 long snappers we had on schol?

    ReplyDelete
  48. hornet - most people can't afford private school. I went to church with quite a few people back in the day who homeschooled for religious reasons. Some were really socially awkward, but I don't see how that pertains to the sports discussion. And most weren't socially awkward; my best friend from 4th grade till about 8th grade was homeschooled.

So anyway, I think it would have been cool for them to have played sports for the public school in their community. Like Jet mentioned, like it or not public schools are supported by tax money, so yes, it makes sense to me that it would be fair to let the homeschooled kids reap at least some benefit.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Serious discussion on homeschooling ethics is like the antithesis of Puppet Hour. Anyone want to argue stem cell research while we are at it?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Are we establishing the precedent of "Serious Dicussion Hour?" I'm not sure about this.

    ReplyDelete
  51. michael - you make some valid points but I'll agree to disagree.

As a high school coach, I just see the potential for too many problems.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I started this discussion and I am hereby ending it. You may now return to your regularly scheduled discussions on Auburns football record, the validity of Lebo, the lack of OL and LBs, hatred of Alabama and other usual suspects

    ReplyDelete
  53. Miller, I think if you spent anytime around homeschooled kids your worries about parents not having the ability to give a well rounded education would be gone.

Unfortunately the same isn't true for the social aspect, many kids do come out without the proper social skills. But their are plenty of oppurtunities for them to obtain these skills. Sports is one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I hate UAT.

I homeschooled my children to do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oops didn't see the official end of discussion before I posted that last one.

    Bama sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  56. BCS to face anit-trust lawsuit.

I think this is legit and has traction.

    I hate Bama.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Let's not go down the stem cell path.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I seen severla kids that were homeschooled and have no social skills. Howver, looka round and you can see many kids tht graduated from public schools that have zero social skills.

my child goes to private school and other than the cost, everything is going well. I wish I had confidence in the public system. Several of mu clients are public school teachers and their children go to private school in montgomery. What does that say about Montgomery? You can get a very good education in Montgomery, in the public schools, but too many parents treat it as a baby sitting service and never offer to help the schools or the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The only time my parents ever sent their kids to private school was the time that we lived in Montgomery. That ought to tell you something.

    ReplyDelete
  60. There's a path made of stem cells?

    ReplyDelete
  61. What is the % of home school kids who are socially awkward vs public school kids that are socially awkward?

I would guess that the % of home school kids would be a lot higher than public school.

    ReplyDelete
  62. We're actually talking about determining a GEEK ratio?

The older I get the more I admire folks that invest their time and money into teaching their children at home.

The horror stories I hear from my wife regarding the school system reinforces my decision in private education.

Just remember the biblical admonition: The geeks will inherit the earth.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Interesting read on the anti-trust issue. The bottom line is teams who have a fair shot to play in the game get excluded based on unfair and biased criteria. Sounds winnable to me.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I remember at the awful Vandy game this year seeing the sign "The geeks shall inherit the turf."

    ReplyDelete
  65. yes its the path the beer follows on the way to the gut.. sadly with every dring a few stem cells on the path lose their life...

    drink up hotties...

  68. My parting thought….
My dad is a Vietnam veteran, he sent me this a few hours ago....out of respect for him, ed and all who serve..

    Ed Freeman
You're an 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in.
You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.
Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.
Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.
    He's coming anyway.
And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.
Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses.
And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times...... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.
Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise , ID ......May God rest his soul.....
I bet you didn't hear about this hero's
passing, but we sure were told a whole
    bunch about some Hip-Hop Coward
beating the crap out of his "girlfriend"

  69. Did we ever get a report from the weekend in Memphis? Rendezvous report? Graceland trip?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks for sharing Dear Leader, what a great dose of perspective.

    :-D

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hey, when's the Kenny Powers HBO show coming on?

    ReplyDelete

That is why I am determined to keep you away from Mrs. Jet.

    ReplyDelete
  75. well maybe .....

    DOM's are not choosey

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think that's precious, Jet. I like watching you struggle.

    HA Digger - ya perv

    ReplyDelete
  77. Jet - the trip was fantastic. Here's a few highlights:
    1) Three 20-point blowout games and UNC domination
    2) A night (and morning) on Beale that ended with a man chasing us into the hotel to do the worst Sharpie sketch of my face I've ever seen....we gave him $2.17
    3) Lunch at Rendezvous with the sausage and cheese platter (2x) and a full rack; also had BBQ nachos on several occasions
    4) Watched a college point guard from Missouri fall off the bar at Coyote Ugly after doing a handstand...chin prolly needed stitches

    ReplyDelete
  78. I have a new Facebook friend. :-D

    ReplyDelete
  79. mon, my wife has enough bad influences as it is...

    ReplyDelete
  80. After a quick scan of this thread while eating lunch I'll add the following - I've been a childrens Sunday School teacher for years and have had a number of kids in my classes who were homeschooled. Only two in particular come to mind as being socially awkward and they're brother & sister and knowing the rest of the family I say they come by this awkwardness naturally and it has nothing to do with homeschooling. The large majority of them seem to be very intelligent and well adjusted. Just by virtue of their church related activities, I'd say they're getting plenty of interaction with others around their respective ages.

So, though I don't have a dog in this Tim Tebow Act going on in the Statehouse in historic downtown gump, I will say that I can't see a real issue with it. If it gets to become a heated debate, maybe Jet has some extra milk jugs laying around just in case. You never know when they might be needed.

Jet - see, if Omnica has her way, you wouldn't be able to make remarks like your above reply to JGT about your house. Don't let that happen.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I have read all of the profiles and realize why it is hard for me to keep up. This is a very young group but so very interesting.I have completed my profile so you can read it if you like. Not anything special but we can't all be HOTTIES.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I managed to miss that on my way in, Michael...

    ReplyDelete
  85. Indeed... you know, whoever came up with the idea for headstones was a pretty smart chap, because I can't seem to find any of the unmarked mass graves I made over the years.

  87. I wonder, if challenged, how many Reese's peanut butter eggs I could eat in a sitting. I'm going to put the over/under on 25

    ReplyDelete
  88. easily a bag and a half, hornet...

    ReplyDelete
  89. Good post earlier Leader about Ed Freeman. Probably wasn't aimed at me, but I enjoyed reading it.

I have three cousins who were/ are homeschooled, they are as weird as football bats. The kind of folks who pick up snakes at church.

Monica, I bet you've never even met a bitchy girl. If you like bitchy girls, you'd LOVE my wife when we run out of red wine.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Reese's peanut butter cups= greatest creation ever.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Let me guess, Mr. United made some sort of weiner reference.

    ReplyDelete
  95. He's doing the same boring shtick he's always done. He's tired.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hornet, I could so take you on that challenge

gatiger, I will offer conflicting examples of homeschooled kids. Having worked with the youth in our church, there was a definite difference at that age.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Alright so I can't listen to Jay on the radio thanks to big bro, anyone care to pass on the good parts?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Ok..who should I throw under the bus on the Roundtable today?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Zookeeper - I'm sure that's true, I've always taught in the 2nd through 4th grade range so that's my perspective.

Mr. U's schtick seems to be the same no matter which show he calls. He's playing a role/character, look at it like that.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Throw Jet under the bus!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Seanzie - I'm still waiting for the good parts.

Home schooled Kids....Seen very good and lame results.

Some good friends have a tall daughter that is on a national volleyball travelling team. Nice kid, but she was socially awkward even before homeschooling. She does a computer curriculum Tue-Thur and is travelling nationally Fri-Mon. She is only a junior and her parents say her grades are good. She has already been invited to AU twice, but will end up at a periennally top 25 school out west.

BinOBA, I've been meaning to ask you...what on earth is your avatar a picture of (sorry, Monica. I always try really hard not to end a sentence with a preposition!)?

  145. kelvin loves nick saban

  146. It is always entertaining when Hotties are listening to a radio program I am not listening to and then respond to it here on the board. Comes across as a bunch of nonsense, of which I am a fan.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Did say she was going to cook? No, I didn't. Focus, Jet.

    ReplyDelete
  148. that is a choclolate, banana, and vanilla moonpie. With rolos, twix, and reeses cups between each moonpie. Then it got tempura battered and deep fried.

BinOBA, interesting combination. Is this something you serve at your restaurant? If so, what restaurant in O.B.?

    ReplyDelete
  155. Actually it is perfectly fine to end a sentence with a preposition especially if changing the sentence to do so creates an awkward phrasing...That rule is based on Latin grammar rules, but for all your school kids out there (jhag) better do what your teacher wants.

  157. Five years ago ...

Left a phone message for one of our lawyers to call a Birmingham number to return a call.

The number was the Birmingham Zoo. He called and asked to speak to Harry Lyons.

Never knew what hit him until it was too late.

  158. who just dropped that "oh word, okay" on wmsp? How urban contemporary.

    ReplyDelete
  159. we don't do them at the restaurant, we do a deepfried banana fritter with icecream and banana fudge sauce. That other creation is a thing we do when we get all our work done and have time to play around. Thinking bout startin a food blawg, we'll see what happens.

  160. Wow, I hate that I can't listen to this show. Everything seems like an inside joke. I don't know about bitchy girls, but I love girls, period.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Girls hate me.

    ReplyDelete
  163. seanzie, you are missing about 5 percent content, it's kinda hard to listen to, from the black guy selling confederate flags at talladega, to kd trying to rip chizik.

  168. i just about fell out of my desk. Phreddie as a transy. classic!

    ReplyDelete
  169. My thoughts so far:

Seanzie, Real Houswifes of Atlanta/Lenox Mall comment = priceless. I just got some dirty looks for laughing out loud.

I would have never admitted it before Jay G did, but I enjoy Real Housewives. Bitchy women are funny (from afar)...

I think homeschooling should be illegal. No, I don't have a reason for feeling that way. Given the current system, though, I agree with homeschooled athletes playing at public schools. I also don't have justification for that.

Saying that a HS football(especially, but you can include other sports if you want) is tied to a school and not a community is naive. Haven't you watched Friday Night Lights? The Dillon Panthers are a community team if I've ever seen one, despite the fact that they're tied to a HS.

  176. If you can look up the habotn archives from last season, you can pretty much re read that and get what the discussion is. Todd/burns has gotten more mictime than anything at this point. KD is ripping chris todd right now.
