ReplyDeleteTim Tebow Act would allow home schoolers to participate in sports, band, etc., at the schools for which they are zoned. It's how Timmy T. got to play for Nease HS in Florida.
ReplyDeleteIt had a public hearing this a.m. before the Senate Education Committee -- votes are never taken at Senate public hearings.
In my measured opinion, the bill has as much chance seeing as Tony Franklin serve as Hugh Nall's right had man at the trucking company.
I don't like the Tim Tebow act, I have no reason to not like it, I just don't. No offense to anyone who was home schooled, but I've never met one who wasn't socially awkward.

ReplyDeleteI'm against it - high school teams are SCHOOL teams, not community teams. Also, regulating eligibility with differing academic standards would be a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteImagine this scenario.....super-stud athlete is failing algebra and english and won't be eligible. He withdraws and homeschools and is magically eligible again.
Now if he's 6'8" and lives in Chelsea....
I'm sure it couldn't hurt, but he's only getting one aspect of social interaction, and sometimes football isn't the best place to learn your social skills.
ReplyDeleteI remember a home schooled kid trying out for a Pony League (I think it's age 12-13 ) baseball team that I was on. He showed up for the 1st day of practice with one of those plastic gloves that comes with the kids wiffle ball set. Seriously, a plastic wiffle ball glove.
I think Wake had a decent point, Hornet you also make an excellent point. Another thing to consider is, you could get around zoning and other things by pulling kids out and moving around...seems like an easy way to break the no "recruiting" rule in HS.

ReplyDeleteTebow had plenty of other social interaction going on, I think it's the parents' responsibility to make sure their children are getting the propper exposure and sports are a great way to do it but not the only way.

ReplyDeleteI'm conflicted. Fundamentally, I want kids who go to the school to play for the school. But the schools DO belong to the community. Even though I fork out thousands for my two to attend private school in the Gump, I'm paying my share for the public schools, and so are the home schooler parents.
This could benefit schools like Chelsea more than the public schools in Montgomery where parents are not going to send their kids to play ball at one of the four "zoned" schools in Montgomery.
Bottom line, the bill is going nowhere anyway.

Hornet, they do it down here in Florida and have for years and I've never seen any problem like that. I would imagine there is a rule against switching during a season.
ReplyDeleteWould you have a problem against a student dual enrolling for two classes, say P.E. and health, and competing in athletics.
I think if you want to play a school sport, or participate in a school sanctioned event, then you should attend that school.
ReplyDeleteI have never liked the idea of homeschooling. I've never met a homeschooled kid that was socially well adjusted, and for the most part their education, time management skills, and overall personal skills seem to be lacking in most cases (I'm sure there are a few exceptions).
I knew several kids who were taking advantage of this in high school, and none of them were abusing the system. Their parents all homeschooled for whatever reason, but they still enjoyed athletics and wanted to play in high school. In some sports finding good leagues outside of school is easy to do, in others its alot harder (especially without spending big bucks). I don't see not allowing a kid to play football because he is homeschooled.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a good idea to let homeschooled kids play sports. It would stink to not be allowed t0 play football because you parents don't want you to go to a public school.
ReplyDeleteJet - I don't buy the "we pay taxes" argument. Kids don't "deserve" to play sports because their parents pay taxes. Your taxes are there to educate the public to improve YOUR society so you definitely benefit even if your kids don't attend the public school.
ReplyDeleteThat wasn't your argument but it is the argument of many. Kids should be attending the school to be involved in extra-curriculars at that school.
By the way, I'm a private school kid so I get that side of it too.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are safe gaurds against all of the abuses ya'll are bringing up. I am in no way familiar with the rules. But like I said they do have it hear and I've never heard of any issues.
Seriously, how many parents are qualified to teach algebra, trig, calculus, chemistry, biology, english, etc?
ReplyDeleteThe parent might really be qualified to teach 1 aspect, but they aren't qualified to teach everything a child should learn in HS.

ReplyDeleteWake - if you're in Florida, all of the homeschool associations are required to have the same academic standards (grad exam, state course of study, etc.) as the state board of education. That is currently not the case in AL and would definitely have to be changed.

Dmiller, there are so many options available to parents. Online classes, co-op classes and the curriculum they have available is so vastly supperior to what is in the public schools, you don't have to be a whiz to teach it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really a homeschool supporter, doubt I would ever do it with my kids. And I see the socially inadequate kids that all of you see, but it can be done right, with the kids getting plenty of socialization. And its nto very hard to one up the education you recieve in public school. I actually saw an article recently whwere colleges look for kids who were homeschooled, said they have a far better educational base.
I have NEVER met a child from home schooling that was not light years ahead of thier peers in almost every aspect of learning and social development. I have known dozens of them all over the country.

I have seen/known hundreds of kids that have gone twelve years in government schools and have ZERO social skills and at best a basic comprehension of the course they completed.
ReplyDeleteHome Schooling is a red herring for the gov. schools ... takes the light of non performance off them. once they start graduating 90%+ country wide I will actually entertain their arguments about home schooling.

ReplyDeleteJust my opinion, and I realize everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however wrong they may be.
But, I don't feel that any parent is fully qualified to give their child a well rounded education comparable to what the child could obtain in an organized school setting (private or public).
There is also more to gain from attending a school than just the book learned education. Life skills and social skills are learned. Those things are just as important in the 'growing up' process as what you get from a classroom/lecture.
DL, go ahead and fire the rocket. It won't get far.

hornet - most people can't afford private school. I went to church with quite a few people back in the day who homeschooled for religious reasons. Some were really socially awkward, but I don't see how that pertains to the sports discussion. And most weren't socially awkward; my best friend from 4th grade till about 8th grade was homeschooled.
ReplyDeleteSo anyway, I think it would have been cool for them to have played sports for the public school in their community. Like Jet mentioned, like it or not public schools are supported by tax money, so yes, it makes sense to me that it would be fair to let the homeschooled kids reap at least some benefit.
Serious discussion on homeschooling ethics is like the antithesis of Puppet Hour. Anyone want to argue stem cell research while we are at it?

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the same isn't true for the social aspect, many kids do come out without the proper social skills. But their are plenty of oppurtunities for them to obtain these skills. Sports is one of them.

ReplyDeletemy child goes to private school and other than the cost, everything is going well. I wish I had confidence in the public system. Several of mu clients are public school teachers and their children go to private school in montgomery. What does that say about Montgomery? You can get a very good education in Montgomery, in the public schools, but too many parents treat it as a baby sitting service and never offer to help the schools or the kids.
The only time my parents ever sent their kids to private school was the time that we lived in Montgomery. That ought to tell you something.

Interesting read on the anti-trust issue. The bottom line is teams who have a fair shot to play in the game get excluded based on unfair and biased criteria. Sounds winnable to me.

2) A night (and morning) on Beale that ended with a man chasing us into the hotel to do the worst Sharpie sketch of my face I've ever seen....we gave him $2.17
3) Lunch at Rendezvous with the sausage and cheese platter (2x) and a full rack; also had BBQ nachos on several occasions
4) Watched a college point guard from Missouri fall off the bar at Coyote Ugly after doing a handstand...chin prolly needed stitches

ReplyDeleteAfter a quick scan of this thread while eating lunch I'll add the following - I've been a childrens Sunday School teacher for years and have had a number of kids in my classes who were homeschooled. Only two in particular come to mind as being socially awkward and they're brother & sister and knowing the rest of the family I say they come by this awkwardness naturally and it has nothing to do with homeschooling. The large majority of them seem to be very intelligent and well adjusted. Just by virtue of their church related activities, I'd say they're getting plenty of interaction with others around their respective ages.

If it gets to become a heated debate, maybe Jet has some extra milk jugs laying around just in case. You never know when they might be needed.

ReplyDeleteSome good friends have a tall daughter that is on a national volleyball travelling team. Nice kid, but she was socially awkward even before homeschooling. She does a computer curriculum Tue-Thur and is travelling nationally Fri-Mon. She is only a junior and her parents say her grades are good. She has already been invited to AU twice, but will end up at a periennally top 25 school out west.

ReplyDeleteActually it is perfectly fine to end a sentence with a preposition especially if changing the sentence to do so creates an awkward phrasing...That rule is based on Latin grammar rules, but for all your school kids out there (jhag) better do what your teacher wants.

I would have never admitted it before Jay G did, but I enjoy Real Housewives. Bitchy women are funny (from afar)...
I think homeschooling should be illegal. No, I don't have a reason for feeling that way. Given the current system, though, I agree with homeschooled athletes playing at public schools. I also don't have justification for that.
Saying that a HS football(especially, but you can include other sports if you want) is tied to a school and not a community is naive. Haven't you watched Friday Night Lights? The Dillon Panthers are a community team if I've ever seen one, despite the fact that they're tied to a HS.
