The good news: I feel great now. So let's try to get caught up.
The team's second scrimmage, held Saturday morning, appeared to be more defense-oriented this time. Quarterback Kodi Burns engineered a first-drive touchdown, but offensive highlights seemed sporadic after that.
The basic themes gleaned from people who watched the action and a few fellow beat hacks, who were gracious enough to share some insights.
- S Mike McNeil went down with an injury to his right shin. It is said that the injury included a fracture. The new coaching staff is much more guarded when it comes to discussing injury information.
- TB Onterio McCalebb broke away for a long touchdown run and impressed with above-average speed/acceleration in all directions.
- The front seven defenders were allowed to run some stunts/twists that caused a lot of blocking problems. This is how things go during the spring -- particularly when you're infusing new starters (Big Snacks Berry and Andrew McCain) into the fray.
- Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said he's ready to whittle The Quarterback Race down to two contestants. "That'll be our goal for this last week," he said.

BANG
ReplyDeleteCome on peeps...
ReplyDeleteIn an unrelated note, the new NBC cop drama "Southland" is excellent.
ReplyDeleteI have added it to my DISH Pass.
Masters anyone? everyone?
ReplyDeleteI'd say "everyone" ...
ReplyDeleteThough I watched Man City vs. Fulham FC earlier ...
ReplyDeleteLEFTY...LEFTY...LEFTY! ....
ReplyDeleteHe seems to be making a run and Tiger is hanging around as well.
ReplyDeleteso Mcneil has a clean break in his shin bone..ouch
ReplyDeleteBetter then an ACL tear
ReplyDeleteYou think CBS is happy that
ReplyDeletePhil and Tiger are playing well?
Thank God, Angel Cabrera is choking..YES.
ReplyDeleteJet, i'll go out on a limb and say YUP.
ReplyDeleteBye bye Campbell..bye bye Kenny
ReplyDeletePhil is schooling Tiger.
ReplyDeletesome lesson...terrible 4 footer
ReplyDeleteBUT Tiger Woods is a pretty good golfer
ReplyDeletenevermind.lol
ReplyDeletePressure to much for Phil.
Phil has left 3 shots he will wish he had.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to all the HOtties!
ReplyDeleteJay, glad you are feeling better!
Yes, watching Tiger make run on the Masters! He is just a monster.
How is Phil out driving tiger by 30 yards. He has done it all day.
ReplyDeleteWho says golf isn't exciting??!!
ReplyDeleteKenny Perry is playing clutch
ReplyDeleteevery stroke now is costing money
ReplyDeleteWEG - Big time dollars!
ReplyDeleteJhag, I would say that it is Kenny Perry's tourney to win. Phil and Tiger are both having the yips. Tiger at 18 in the pinestraw.
ReplyDeleteTiger done. Now Phil done.
ReplyDeleteChris Todd, we hardly knew ye.
ReplyDeletelol
Kenny Perry and the shot of his life.
ReplyDeleteKenny Perry playing for keeps. A tribute to old fogeys everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Cabrera doesnt win
ReplyDeleteTake off that damn hat...ugh
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard a lot about our runningbacks breaking long runs for touchdowns in a while. That is very encouraging. I remember back when we had Andrews, Brooks, and Cribbs. I would always wonder who would break a 40, 50, or 60 yard gain. It seemed like they got at least one every game.
ReplyDeleteWe have needed a breakaway back for a while. Tate has shown flashes, but I don't view him as that type of back. Yea, I know he runs a 4.4/40, but he just doesn't seem to get up to speed and through the whole quick enough.
BONUS TIME.
ReplyDeleteGood golf
ReplyDeleteThe Argentinian wins...great
ReplyDeleteviva Argentina. I was pulling for the fat white guy.
ReplyDeleteFat, Old, White guy, that is.
ReplyDeleteContinued from the last post, I wanted to also express condolences for the family of Connie Frederick. He and my mother were high school classmates and good friends. I got to meet him on a couple of occasions. Although his punt return against Bama was before my time, I have heard the story many times. My mother says that Connie told Coach Jordan that he felt sure that he could run a successful fake but it was not a called fake.
ReplyDeleteSame here, Sam.
ReplyDeleteFeel bad for Kenny Perry and the guy with the skankilicious wife. They both choked when the pressure was on. Been there and done that on the golf course as well.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Andrew McCain will have a better Fall 2009 than John McCain had in Fall '08.
ReplyDeleteKenny Perry might as well be the Kenny on South Park. I hated to see him choke, but that is pressure golf for you.
ReplyDeleteStill proud of fellow Kentuckian Kenny Perry.
ReplyDeleteI'm over 50, so I wanted Perry to win. I don't watch golf much anymore. It was hilarious listening to the CBS announcers druuming up excitement for Lefty and Tiger.
ReplyDeleteI think the Mah-stuhrs Tuhh-nament officials dictate that the announcers to refer to the paying spectators as "patrons".
We are attracting some serious skill player recruits to the Plains.
ReplyDeleteWe need to get more OL to visit. According to the free Scout info, we still don't have much OL interest. I'm sure the Scout data needs to be updated b/c we have had a couple of visiters that aren't even listed on Scout, but there still hasn't been the OL activity needed.
Hey boys and girls... Jay glad you are feeling better. I'm looking forward to some actual first hand accounts of the football goings ons...
ReplyDeleteI don't recall ever seeing so many high profile athletes interested in Auburn this early in the recruiting process. Most of the time when Tuberville got the high profile guys, it was signing day. I hope these coaches can coach as well as they can recruit.
ReplyDeleteAs a casual(at best) golf fan, I really enjoyed the Tiger-Phil matchup. Even though neither won the tournament, the tension between the two rivals was great. I can understand real golf fans appreciating the other golfers, but as a casual observer, it was great to see the players I recognize going head to head. It's funny,I care little about golf, but I watch The Masters most every year.
ReplyDeleteKids ...
ReplyDeleteI was there for the Norman collapse in 1996 ... and this was worse to watch because he lost it in 2 bad -- chip on 17, and drive on 18. Norman was done by the turn.
Nothing he did otherwise was fatal. I am convinced he would have beaten Campbell head to head, but Cabrera is a plodder.
Perry totally stiffened up. He even admitted so. His backswing got short and quick.
ReplyDeletei never had that problem when playing golf...of course I typically pounded numerous beers during a round. Are pros allowed to partake of "swinglube" during a tuhh-nament?
if anyone is bored and up for some fun, check out scout's collegefootballnews. http://cfn.scout.com/2/847637.html they do a mock "what if?" playoff scenario for the last ten years or so. they have utah, excuse me, urban meyer, beating 2004 AU in the first round based off AU's struggles with VT in sugar bowl and the fact that utah team was better than the one that b-smacked bammer this year. apparently they didn't do the research that urban the great is 0-2 against AU with a national champ team and timmy boy. i wonder if they think he could beat his 2004 ute team with either of the uf teams he lost to AU with? The 2004 AU team would have run utah off the field that year. of course they put urban through to the national championship round to face USC and get pounded. I'm still convinced AU is the only undefeated amateur team in 2004 (i'm looking your way mr. bush) and would have given USC a helluva lot better game win or lose than choklahoma. and the 2004 AU team would have beat 2008 bama soundly as well. the media love affair with urban the ahole continues...
ReplyDeletenow that i have looked at some of the other years in the cfn playoff "what if?" the goobers don't even give bama credit for losing to uf in the sec champ game. they give it lsu??? do some research ya doofuses. credibility 0.
ReplyDeleteDid anybody else watch The Unusuals on ABC Wednesday night?
ReplyDeleteSeveral reports(from rivals so-called insiders) said Trotter had a bad day under pressure. If I had to guess looks like hes the odd man out. Caudle broke several runs while under pressure and looked good on passes under 15 yards but showed happy feet at times and threw another ugly INT that was returned for a TD. Burns did his usual thing, looking bewildered about the act of passing the football. Acording to several, none of the QB's did great under so much pressure, but Caudle did the best. I still think this is a 2 horse race going into fall.
ReplyDeleteUgly interceptions seem to have been a problem for Caudle during his entire time at AU. I wonder if Malzahn thinks it is a fixable problem, or if that is going to always be an issue for Neil?
ReplyDeleteI just heard one bizarre news story here in Columbia. It seems a man went into an alcoholics meeting with a gun and tried to rob the people. Surprisingly enough, one of the alcoholics was licensed to carry a gun and had taken the opportunity to exercise that right. Yea, the alcoholic sent the would be robber to the promised land. Say no to gun control.
ReplyDeletedepressed, it depends on why he's throwing the picks. It could be that he's the best timing passer, but getting victimized by receivers turning the wrong way. Hey, it could happen.
ReplyDeleteThe more I read, the more I am convinced that Malzahn has the same problem with the QBs that Franklin had. Both Kodi and Caudle do some good things, but they make too many mental errors. Who is the starter may come down to the style of offense Malzahn chooses to run.
ReplyDeleteFWIW...A guy from another blog that is allowed in some practices, confirms what Kodi said, which is that the Caudle INT was b/c Harry Adams ran the wrong route and Caudle was throwing to a spot.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is the poor WR play affecting him. I've stated before, I can't tell if the WR play has made the QB's look bad, or if the QB play has made the WR's look so unimpressive. I have seen Caudle throw some ugly interceptions in the open scrimmages before this spring, but those could have been someone else's fault. That is a fair point to make, though.
ReplyDeleteIf Caudle can't step up, it seems to me like our offense will look like this: Run Tate, Run Kodi, Run Fannin, Run Tate, Run Fannin,Pass Kodi. Repeat.
ReplyDeleteI think our line will be much better than last year, so we should look forward to to an improved run game. Even if this basic offense gives us one more touchdown than it averaged last season with a great defense, we could be a 9 win team. If Kodi can find some hint of consistency, we at least have hope against Bama and Ole Miss.
Me is afraid Kodi Burns = Reggie Ball. Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a cool nickname like Big Snacks...
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter, Hotties!
ReplyDeleteif kodi can play against AU every time, i like the reggie ball comparison.
ReplyDeletethat 2005 game, ball looked all world against AU. three weeks later i watched a little bit of them on tv and he couldn't have hit water if he was on a canoe in the ocean.
speaking of which, i wonder if chiz and co. are going to fix that nasty habit tub's group had of getting their rear end handed to them by vastly inferior teams once or twice a year.
Go Braves
ReplyDeleteHappy late Easter everyone! Time to get some jellybeans 50% off!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Hotties. I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter.
ReplyDeleteUnanswered questions for the weekend ...
ReplyDelete1. Did GaTiger make it to Hamburger King?
2. Is it possible for a FBS team to be competitive without a quarterback? And with multiple long snappers?
3. Who is the new BC coach?
A Good Morning to all!!
ReplyDeleteHope everyone had a good Easter.
I became a Kenny Perry fan this weekend. He is cool.
ehyou ...
ReplyDeleteBEST AVATAR EVER.
So, is that cruise director still coked up?
The Auburn Undercover group is having an A-Day taillgate. I got am email from PMarsh saying so. Step up Hotties, they're offering a challenge.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think several Hotties are double agents and are attending.
ReplyDelete"Me is afraid Kodi Burns = Reggie Ball. Any thoughts?"
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see Kodi play anywhere near as well as Reggie Ball on his best day. Ball was inconsistent, but he had some games where he showed some greatness...Kodi hasn't had such games.
Jet..
ReplyDeleteIsaac and Julie have had a lot of good times. That's all I can say about that.
Jay G. is right. Southland is very good.
ReplyDeleteBarnhart's write-up after he spent last Friday with Auburn staff.
ReplyDeleteWhat up people?
ReplyDeleteEhyou, thanks for the link. That was a good analysis by Barnhart.
ReplyDeleteDid it really take spending a weekend in Auburn to write that? Barnhart is a talented writer and all, but the article was very vanilla and could have been written in exactly the same form many weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, it made me feel good.
Yes, ehyou, thanks for the link!
ReplyDeleteVerily I say unto you:
ReplyDeleteIt is permissible to venture into AL.COM to seek out Goldberg's articles. Thou shalt not venture into the den of inequity that is "reader responses". If you follow this path of wickedness, return to the virtuous HABOTN so that you may receive penance and feel clean once again.
Amen
Ehyou ...
ReplyDeleteThe Good Book says, "Evil companions corrupt good morals." Al.com forums and reader responses would fall into that category.
I know I shouldn't do it Ehyou, but I started reading the responses. Especially when I see someone start talking about stats. So after I checked those numbers and realized they were out of their minf I remembered from whence they came, and so I'm back home on the HABOTN, where the critique is genuine, and trustworthy.
ReplyDeleteProwler - SO agree - Big Snacks is an awesome nickname.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Luv!
Good morning, ehyou! My sister is a Kenny Perry fan, but says I'm not supposed to tell anyone.
Southland was very good. The folks from ER and West Wing are good at what they do.
Good morning, Seanzie.
I don't ever go to al.com anymore. There's just no reason to at this point.
ReplyDeleteI read Jay's advertiser article on Kodi. It seems that Kodi may have taken a step forward with the opening drive of the scrimmage. I hope this is the case.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things that bothered me about Kodi last season is that he didn't seem to react well when he wasn't in the game every offensive snap. It may be that he just needed to get into a rhythm, but it is concerning.
I am actually pretty excited to see which two QBs Malzahn selects. At the moment Kodi seems the most likely due to his previous playing time, but I am far from certain.
Smart man, Seanzie.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Monica! Yes, Seanzie is a very smart man.
ReplyDeleteI used to post on al.com all the time, because I didn't know of any other places to post about Auburn football...I found myself wanting to request that all people must go through a licensing process and an IQ test before being allowed internet access.
ReplyDeleteLuv - I just realized at Easter that my sister in law is an xray chick too!
ReplyDeleteRK - Did you have the same nickname there?
ReplyDeleteYour dirty sister or the other one (whose name escapes me at this moment)? Where does she work? Does she like it?
ReplyDeletesister-in-law - Greg's sister. She works here in West Virginia and yes, she likes it.
ReplyDeleteMon, I'm sure that I used the same on there as well.
ReplyDeleteI remember calling someone WERK and that someone had good sense so that I had to be you.
ReplyDeleteDUH. You did say sister in-law. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteReverend EYT....thanks for keeping us righteous regarding Al.Com.
ReplyDeleteMr CFB's article? I'm OK with it. Mildly generic, but summarizes and hits all the points concisely without unecessary speculation. That would be a good article to save and compare results after NSD 2010.
JGT..Ingest electrolytes..even a few days after feeling better.
I find the al.com forums interestng in that I am not quite sure why people make those silly posts on their. I am fine with anyone giving an honest opinion, but what is on the al.com forums just seems pointless. Sure, I may occasionally post something stupid, but it appears that posters on al.com make the extra effort to ensure they do so consistently.
ReplyDeleteStill aching for Kenny Perry ... just get up and down on 17, and the jacket would have been his.
ReplyDeleteIt probably was me.
ReplyDeleteI'm just thankful that I don't waste time on there anymore. There are a lot of angry sad people on there.
I agree completely. I've said it 1,000 times and I'll say it again.
ReplyDeleteal.com = toxic
I luv Dirty!!
ReplyDeleteAnd good day everyone!
ReplyDeleteDo you know Monica's dirty sister, AU1N04?
ReplyDeleteYea, and al.com doesn't even have a puppet hour, either. They are so behind the times.
ReplyDeleteNot in person. But enough to know she is dreamy. ; )
ReplyDeleteAs dreamy as Monica?
ReplyDeleteYou know Monica has a fragile ego, so you better tell her you love her too and think she is dreamy. ;-)
ReplyDeleteNow with Monica that is a whole different level. But respect GregD too much to comment. : ) It's those damn pink gloves that knock me out.
ReplyDeleteOh and Mon....what did I tell you about negotiating with the U.S. Navy?
ReplyDeleteA bit of a challenge to focus on work today.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya, AU1N04! I REALLY don't want to be here!
ReplyDeleteJust read al.com comment thread for fun... it's hilarious. I am going to start to use the line, "You are not a real Auburn fan!" more often when talking here. Poor Goldberg wrote, "Enough!" two or three times in the thread I was looking at due to the arguing. Good times.
ReplyDeleteMichael,
ReplyDeleteI think you're the one that's not a true Auburn fan.
Give me a break, idiot. I am the true Auburn fan here. You guys are lucky I give you all this inside info.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Chizik is my dad, and he says Caudle will be the starter.
Who are you calling "idiot," idiot?
ReplyDeleteMy daddy is Bobby Lowder, and he can fire your daddy.
Jet, Kodi is actually Michael's momma too, so I would trust his inside info.
ReplyDeleteYou are not an Auburn fan. You are just a bammer. Why don't you go worship Nick $aban and eat elephant poop.
ReplyDeleteBwahahahaha, I love it.
ReplyDeleteShould this be referred to as the al.com hour?
ReplyDeleteLet's not make it a whole hour... maybe call it Ten Minutes of AL.com, or TMOA for short.
ReplyDeleteYea, I like that. An entire hour devoted to honor al.com would be excessive.
ReplyDeleteSo have the 10 minutes expired?
ReplyDeleteI don't want to commit a HABOTN faux pas by celebrating TMOA for more than 10 minutes.
Yeah Jet. If you have more good lines you wanted to use, then save them for tomorrow's TMOA.
ReplyDeleteAU1 - I didn't know you told me anything about negotiating with the Navy.
ReplyDeleteYou people are giving me al.com flashbacks and it's not even funny.
I am stickler for etiquette, Michael.
ReplyDeleteNote to self: remember to write thank-you notes to Michael, Steve in re creation of Ten Minutes of Al.com
Be sure to address any thank you letters referencing TMOA to "Idiot."
ReplyDeleteWow, TMOA is scary. I'm sure it brings back parts of all of our lives that we tried to forget.
ReplyDeleteThank you JGT for saving us from those dark times.
Whoops, I just posted as Phillip. Strangeness.
ReplyDeleteMon - We were discussing the pirates....who since have been eliminated.
ReplyDeleteI think you have me confused with some other Monica.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I was talking to myself then. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteI am so incredibly pumped about A-Day.
ReplyDeleteWhy does the Monday after the Masters always suck worse than a regular Monday?
ReplyDeleteEarly forecast for Saturday on the Plains:
ReplyDelete71, partly cloudy
Sounds like a winner.
J-Z ...
ReplyDeleteCause you know the only thing after that is A-Day, then the barren desert of time must be crossed until football season, save for three golf majors.
watching golf on television = watching bowling
ReplyDeleteboth mind numbingly boring
Maybe to you, Monica, but I LOVE it. When Tiger and Mickelson started making their surge yesterday it was so exciting!
ReplyDeleteJet, what's the next major?
ReplyDeleteLUV - I think you are right....people will remember that run more so than Angel Cabrera winning. But, while I was bummed it happened, it felt somewhat good to see Tiger nail a tree like I do.
ReplyDeleteHow can you surge without running? And I totally get that I'm in the minority. :-)
ReplyDeleteBritish.
ReplyDeleteU.S. Open ... over Father's Day weekend ... Bethpage Black, outside of New York City.
ReplyDeleteTiger won there in 2002.
Excuse me...US Open in June.
ReplyDeleteWell, how many people are fans of Cabrera?
ReplyDeleteBritish Open at Turnberry, Scotland in mid July ... site of Nicklaus-Watson duel in 1977.
ReplyDeleteLuv - I assume the country of Argentina.
ReplyDeletePGA Championship at Hazeltine, outside Minneapolis in August. Rich Beem won there in 2002.
ReplyDeleteCertainly not people in the U.S.!
ReplyDeleteJet, that's probably the last time he won.
ReplyDeleteNew thread up
ReplyDelete
