Furlough, Pt. II: Day Four (Wednesday)

Hey everyone. Here we are on Wednesday, which means I'm about half-way through my unpaid furlough. Working in the newspaper business isn't exactly the most comfortable sector these days, but I like what I do and I love the HABOTN.

Just re-affirming my commitment to you.

Since this post was created before my furlough, I cannot provide any specifics about 80s Music or Auburn Beat Writer Trivia Quizzes I'm planning to upload to Facebook. That may or may not have happened. If you have the means to check those, though, I'd highly recommend it. They're (going to be) so choice.

Fight the power, damn the man, etc.

Dear Leader- I'm afraid it ain't August.

    ReplyDelete
  8. On the contrary, it's May, May is a long while from August.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I can tolerate April, but May means grass pollen... HA HA HAH CHEW!!!!!!

  10. Go Pens, but if they ain't gonna, then GO CANES!!!

THT - Slowly, very slowly you may come around. : )

    ReplyDelete
  13. uh, jet, sir, we make that in about 10 minutes around here. I would suggest setting your sights a little higher.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why am I surprised TN signed Daniel Hood? Convicted of raping and kidnapping a 13 year old. If you've read the details of that crime it's incredible that they would take a chance on this kid.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Employee appreciation?

    ReplyDelete
  16. it's a new concept, Criminal. Don't tell Jay G, he might lose it.

For many of the Big Orange Nation, that's called a "family reunion."

  18. So I heard Leigh Tiffin got beat up and Anthony Mix is an alleged P.O.S. I told you guys a few weeks back, Anthony Mix is not good people.

Scout has updated the prospects info on their free site. We have now finally offered to a few more top rated OL.

I also noticed that we have a great many offers extended for this time of year. I know this is a growing trend and haven't looked to see if the other teams are offering this early also, but wonder how we compare with the others. UGA has been offering early for years.

We have offered to many top recruits, I hope the recruit character assessment efforts are keeping up with the offer efforts.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So you're saying Andy Mix beat up Tiffin?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jet - OJ was serving you breakfast? Was he wearing gloves, or a glove? I hope you got his autograph.

Mon- re UT recruit... I'm surprised he's not locked up for a long time, unless UT plans on playing their games at the pen.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's not everyday that a double murderer serves you breakfast.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Speaking of murder and criminals. A young (22) womans body was found in the back seat of her car parked at Tracey J's old business. This is at the corner of Whortenbend road and Hiway 77. 1 mile from my house. They found her yesterday at about 3:50 PM. My grand kids bus passed by there at 3:05PM.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Digger, that's pretty crazy. Where abouts do you live?

    ReplyDelete
  25. who wants to share a happy thought?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jet, that makes me REALLY Happy!!! :-D

    ReplyDelete
  27. total carnage with UA-T players strewn all over the field after Auburn wins the Iron Bowl.. now there's a real happy thought.

  28. I must resist the temptation to blog irrelevantly while my work computer is in a catatonic state. I'm just happy my HABOTN computer is running smoooooothly. Resistance is futile.

  34. howdy FSJ- I sure got a cravin for bbq right now.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I heard he was beatup by a longsnapper

    ReplyDelete
  36. THT....we have been practicing pretty hard for our contest on the 15th.

I may be sick of BBQ by then.

Then only thing I am not going to like is that these contests prefer sweet sauces and I am more of a thin spicy sauce guy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hate anything with a U and a T in it.

    Pat Sullivan

    ReplyDelete
  44. Chocolate - I presume it works fine, I see it's a YouTube link which is currently blocked by the man here.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks! Now once I learn how to make link sausage, I won't have to study on links ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'd really like me some good BBQ right now with side orders of link sausages and chocolates. YUMMMMY!

    ReplyDelete
  47. THT - only 15 minutes until lunch.

Unfortunately, I don't get to go for another hour and 15.

  49. Since we are talking about food..I just ate some jambalaya that was out of this world..it's been marinading for 4 days now and has some kick to it..I added these brown all natural tortillas (never seen them in my life) to it and man it was good..had a samuel adams with it..

    ReplyDelete
  50. well, I've just been googling away, trying to find some old map info and looking for an 1808 newspaper...all the while work continues to pile up deeper and deeper with no estimate on when computer system will be back up.

maybe I'll read the AU Media Guide on line to bide my time. Suggestions, anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sam Adams @ lunch!?
Can I come work for you?

    ReplyDelete
  52. it worked count chocula

    ReplyDelete
  53. wareagle83, I had lunch 2 hours ago. It's about time or 2nd lunch!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm on the unemployment line brother...but sure you can come have a beer...

    ReplyDelete
  55. i just spilled a tsp of diet coke. should I wipe it up with a napkin (and therefore waste it) or should I slurp it up off the top of the desk?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Doc - as much of a fan of DC as you are, slurping is definitely the way to go here.

    ReplyDelete
  57. gatiger - you got that right. I wasn't about to let it go to waste. For any germophobes out there, I subsequently wiped the desk with that foamy sanitizer stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  58. then I slurped up the sanitizer ;-)

  60. Okay, now I'm headed to lunch and nobody gave me their favorite B'ham BBQ joint. I love Miss Myra's for BBQ chicken, but I haven't found anything worthwhile beyond Jim N' Nick's for pork.

    ReplyDelete
  61. THT...
Very cool site. How anyone could not find maps interesting is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  62. ChocoScott...
Sorry dude. Not a b'ham restauranteur.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Scott Chocolate - I could have made a recommendation, but it would have been about 1000 miles round trip...pretty long lunch break.

    ReplyDelete
  64. THT...
Are maps a livelihood or a pastime?

    ReplyDelete
  65. ehyou - I agree. I love maps because they are mostly pictures that tell history. Since I can't read, I need pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  66. ehyou - just a hobby. I didn't even know antique maps existed until 9 years ago. I'm nuts about them. Of course, I'm just plain nuts, too.

    ReplyDelete
  67. well, so much for recess...computer system back up.

I get to do work now.

    ReplyDelete
  68. THT-I haven't made it over to the Boston library but I will..for maps no less!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. THT...

  71. The biscuits are getting destroyed in front of all of those kids.

    ReplyDelete
  72. JD...
I'm not sure what that means, but I've destroyed quite a few biscuits in my day.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm a long time sufferer of biscuit toxicity. Some folks get heavy metal poisoning. I get biscuit heavy poisoning.

    ReplyDelete
  74. especially biscuits with McCutcheon's apple butter, or biscuits with sourwood honey.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm not saying I've done this recently, but there is an unspeakable joy to having biscuits, smoked Conecuh sausage and honey. Yes, there is.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'll never forget what Lewis Grizzard said about Mrs. Wilkes's biscuits (Savannah)

They're so good they'll make you want to go home and slap your mama.

    ReplyDelete
  77. ok so even the gaming world is bagging on Auburn. From Gamespot regarding upcoming 2010 NCAA Football: Let's say you've had a falling out with your favorite college football team. Not to name names here, but hypothetically speaking, let's just say your team, which in recent seasons had an incredible run near the top of its conference, spent the past year lingering in futility, with a faltering offense that barely managed to find first downs, much less the end zone. Your favorite team lost to its archrival in an embarrassing shutout and, in the offseason, fired its longtime coach in favor of an unproven and unpopular choice.

Clearly things aren't going well for you and your team. But if you're an Auburn Tigers fan--oops, we said we wouldn't name names here--what do you do? Well, if you're playing EA Sports' upcoming NCAA Football 10, you just might consider replacing your favorite team with one of your own creation.

THT - That previous logo was funny.

I said to myself that I did not post that and was confused for a sec.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Sean...
I've said it before. I love everyone thinking we're down. It makes success that much sweeter.

I also find it entertaining when sports game producers totally whiff on how good a team will be.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I really am not offended or anything, I just think it's silly that a guy doing a sports game preview would choose that as a segue into a create-a-school feature.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Speaking of sausage, the Legislature is creeping along today.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Jet, what exactly do you do there?

    ReplyDelete
  83. all this biscuit, sausage, bbq talk... maybe I should launch a preemptive laxative.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Jet handles the most important of legislative matters, e.g. HABOTN resolution GO JET GO!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. THT has had his DC today, I see.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Doc - because I know you'll appreciate this, possibly Jet will too, I'm bobbing my head and tapping my foot to some Squeeze right now.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'd appreciate just about any music right now, gatiger.

Sean, I have no doubt it will be a 6DC day. 4 down, 2 to go. I just wish I had some Q to go with it.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I remember "Tempted" and "Hourglass"

    ReplyDelete

    That's right Sean!!

    DC = Washington D.C = Washington Capitals!

    Let's Go Caps!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. AU1N, serious question, why do Baltimore folks claim DC but DC fans (all the people i know)disdain anything Baltimore?

    ReplyDelete
  92. ehyou - this particular selection was Black Coffee in Bed.

    ReplyDelete
  93. gatiger...
Don't know the song, I do however approve of the practice.

    ReplyDelete
  94. ehyou - is that Duke from "The Shootist"?

    ReplyDelete
  95. My card has no title, as not to alert anyone to the fact that I actually do nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anonymous2:33 PM

Sean - Do not mistake rooting for the Caps for Baltimore claiming DC.

The Baltimore Skipjacks years ago was the farm team to the Caps so there is some allegiance there. Everything else, completely separate. Baltimore Bullets left Baltimore to become the DC Bullets and ultimately the Wizards. Baltimore was upset about that.

The Colts, even in down years, were the Baltimore Colts..Skins never accepted. And the Orioles were always winners prior to the last decade and never cared about a DC MLB team. Fans that is, owners wanted the DC fans and that is why the Nats are struggling.

That being said, I grew up in Annapolis which is half way between both and used to always go to Caps games. Now I live in Downtown Baltimore by the water.

    ReplyDelete
  97. gatiger...
Indeed. The Shootist. Also starring Ronnie Howard.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Anonymous2:34 PM

And when I lived in Atlanta...there were no Thrashers.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Thanks for clearing that up. AU1N, not trying to be a douche, just an honest question.

    ReplyDelete
  100. There was apparently an Alabama State Rep that told a constituent in writing, "go **** yourself". Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Jet - that "secret" of yours has been out longer than Barney Frank.

    ReplyDelete
  102. AL State Reps are known for their tact.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Anonymous2:43 PM

Sean - I didn't take it that way no worries. It is a legit question that is asked on a regular basis around here.

Washington D.C. = Politicos and White Collar Criminals, I mean professionals.

Baltimore = except for the new comers like myself Blue Collar, steel mills and long shore men

    ReplyDelete
  104. Uhm, I know that AL State Representative Alvin Holmes has a reputation which precedes him but I'm not sure that it has anything to do with tact.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Jet could probably give us some inside scoop on some of these clowns. But won't due to ......
    whatever

    ReplyDelete
  106. Sean, did you see my answer about loaction. You live in this area also right?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Digger, you can absolutely take that to the bank. That's of course an old expression which these days may be meaningless. The point being, our friend Jet could most assuredly do as you state. One individual in particular who spent quite a bit of time there comes to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  108. gatiger he can't or won't but there are some wild stories in the gump

    ReplyDelete
  109. You can bet he won't share them on this forum. Not with much juicy detail anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  110. When I lived in ATL (Maryetta) we had Knights season tickets. I've never liked the Thrashers because they ran the Knights out of town. Knights = good, affordable hockey.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Don't blame him at all. Wise not to tell too much on public forums or blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  112. News item - attending someone else's con-calls are usually a waste of time.

News item part dieux - "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is far and away "The Possum's" best song and quite likely one of the best Country songs period.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Anonymous2:53 PM

Knights = What was her name....Manueh Rheaum....The women GK.

    ReplyDelete
  114. The Flames played in Atlanta at one time. Long time ago I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Anonymous2:54 PM

Manon Rheaume - I love google.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Anonymous2:55 PM

Yes they did Atlanta Flames, then moved to Calgary

    ReplyDelete
  117. My favorites:
    "The King is Gone"
    "Still Doin' Time"

    ReplyDelete
  118. I'm currently in the ATL. I am a transplated Predators fan. ATL stole the Knights from Nashville so good riddance.

    ReplyDelete
  119. THT-didn't you tell me that I needed to check out the old maps there? what did you call them? I just remember old maps..should I let you know when I go so I can name drop when I get there..yeah I know Tar Heel Tiger now get me my map!

  121. Chocolicious Scott,

In BHM, Costa's has been decent when I've eaten there and Full Moon catered something that I was at last week. It was tasty and the beans kicked a$$. Green Top up near Adamsville is good too, but they moved to a new building, so that can adversely affect a bbq joint.

I know this comes too late for lunch today, but maybe it will help next time.

    ReplyDelete
  122. oh...and Jet,

State Employee is synonymous with actually not doing any work.

    ReplyDelete
  123. C'mon Puppet hour....

    ReplyDelete
  124. I do not like the hour of puppets. It's not the puppets so much as the huge volume of work that invariably occurs at that hour that forces me to miss puppet hour.

    ReplyDelete
  125. j-z, thanks. Not a fan of Full Moon, which is unfortunate, as there is one right around the corner from me. I do agree that their beans are pretty good, though. I'll have to try Costa's. I mentioned Miss Myra's in Cahaba Heights before. Not sure I've ever had their pork, so maybe I should try that, too. I always get sucked in by the chicken - awesome, and comes with the best white sauce in the world!

    ReplyDelete
  126. White sauce on bbg...now that has got to be a yankee thang.
Youse guys want to mess up bbq try some of this white sauce.

    ReplyDelete
  127. ^^^Thread Killer^^^

    ReplyDelete
  128. The Hour of the Puppet is upon us. Be afraid.

    ReplyDelete
  129. nope digger, work = thread killer :-(

    ReplyDelete
  130. Are all puppets bammmes or all bammmmers puppets?

    ReplyDelete
  131. White sauce is pretty much for BBQ chicken only. Okay, good on hushpuppies, too. I'm not sure on all the ingredients, but has to have vinegar, mayo, and pepper in there. Definitely not yankee, though. Miss Myra's has southern BBQ written all over it, unfortunately all the way down to the Bear Bryant posters all over the dilapidated walls. Greenbrier outside of Huntsville has a version of white sauce, too. Neither their chicken nor their pork is great, but they have good hushpuppies. I'll leave it to someone else to try puppets with white sauce.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Does Saban pull the stings and make them dance?

    ReplyDelete
  133. Years ago Greenbriars had good BBQ. Don't remember the white sauce. Sounds pretty good just never had it.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I don't care how much phenergan you pump in me or how good the 'Q is, I couldn't keep my lunch down in a joint with bahr posters on the wall.

    ReplyDelete
  135. BBQ puppets would be like BBQ skunk, white sauce would not help it.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Hotties, I'm about to hit the road. Y'all have a good rest of the day.

AU1N04 - let's scream it together... GO PENS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  137. THT,

I used to think that too, but darned if Jim's Barbecue just outside of Billingsley on the the highway to hell isn't some of the best q in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I'm a take-out guy only at Miss Myra's. I don't want to try to digest with Bahr and Bammer posters around, either. My stops there are often for about 8 or 10 whole chickens, followed by a drive to Lake Martin, where they are devoured by the sun-burned masses.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  147. Yea it's been pretty bad overall but the Auburn/Opelika area has been off and on as far as rain.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Braves are winning. Yeah come on!

    ReplyDelete
  149. That same stuff has been coming through Macon this evening.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Scott Chocolate,

Miss Myra's is the best in Bham IMO. In fact, I ate there today.

I like their chicken, pork, and beef. Their red sauces is not my favorite, but it is ok.

They have great white sauce for the chicken and their banana pudding is out of this world.

    ReplyDelete
  151. i just read that au's basketball team is losing a sholarship due to its apr score. i wonder how the football program fared.

    ReplyDelete
  152. They passed...

Ole Miss was the only SEC team that didn't they lost 3 scholarships

    ReplyDelete
  153. Thanks jhag. That's alright.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Anonymous8:38 PM

Ole Miss recruited something like ....38 players and now they lose 3 schollys....that math won't work too well for the incoming recruits.

    ReplyDelete
  155. The recruits have to be smart enough to figure out that math, though hoopie. Is that likely?

    ReplyDelete
  156. I am assuming the scholarship cuts won't go into affect until the next recruiting class. But yeah, the 2010 Ole Miss class will not be a big one.

You mean to tell me Orgeron wasn't big on academics?

    ReplyDelete
  157. 25 schollys max per year. I still haven't heard what Ole Miss is doing with the 340 they signed in February.

    ReplyDelete
  158. this is tough. Pens were back in the series when they took lead with 4+ minutes to play, then gave up tying goal on Caps power play with 2 minutes. Now we're in OT. One quick caps goal and Pens can set up their tee times.

    ReplyDelete
  159. PENS WIN PENS WIN PENS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  160. Canes and Bruins starting OT hockey now.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Canes win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  162. Braves win. Finally.

    ReplyDelete
  163. hi hotties..Havent been on in a while. i am typing on a mini laptop, so if something comes out wierd, small keyboard

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  168. I find the lack of news disturbing. Auburn news, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Choc-O-Scott,

Full Moon BBQ on the Southside is my fave pork bbq in the Ham. Don't miss the cookies while you're there.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Cookies and BBQ....hmmmmmmmm. (in my best Homer Simpson voice.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Congrats Sponge!

    ReplyDelete
  172. bbq in the ham, i think ive been to most, and i still like dreamland. instead of the ribs, I just get a bbq sandwich. Jim and nicks is always good. the bbq house in au had the best brunswick stew. There is a place in alex city on 280 that has great stew as well.

    ReplyDelete
  173. opps I kept reading and see that Choc-o-Scott has rejected Full Moon. So, nevermind. :-)
