Auburn in the MLB Draft

Hey everyone. A few fellas with Auburn ties have heard their name called during the Major League Baseball draft, which began yesterday ... but remains underway.

•IF Joseph Sanders, a Stanhope Elmore High graduate, went in the 5th round (151st overall) to the Colorado Rockies. They listed him as a third baseman. That's a swell organization for hitters.

The Rockies have been jocking Sanders for years. Their area scout, Damon Iannelli, first met Sanders during the summer before his senior year at SEHS and has been in periodic contact ever since. Sanders was flown to Denver last week for a workout at Coors Field.

•SS Nick Franklin, an Auburn baseball signee from suburban Orlando, was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the first round. Don't plan on seeing him at Plainsman Park.

•C Lucas Bailey, an Auburn baseball signee from LaGrange, Ga., was selected in the fourth round (139th overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays. He is technically out of action after undergoing elbow surgery. That apparently didn't sour the Rays. I'd guess that he'll end up signing a contract, but the injury may produce a low-ball offer that leads him to college. Who knows?

•OF Brandon Jacobs, a football signee from suburban Atlanta, was taken in the 10th round (318th overall) by the Boston Red Sox. They listed him as a left fielder. Will that slot be worth enough to woo him away from football? That depends on what the Red Sox offer.

UPDATE: Jacobs has told our friends at AuburnSports.com that he plans to sign with the Red Sox in short order for what he said was "second-round money." That's a wrap, Auburn fans.

•SP Drew Madrigal, a baseball signee from California, was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round. Since he's a junior-college kid, I'd think he'll take a careful look at the money San Diego offers.

•SP Garrett Bush, a baseball signee from Jacksonville, Fla., was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 15th round. I'd normally say this is the range where players typically opt for college ball, but I thought the same thing about Jake Peavy in 1999. Then he signed with the Padres.

•RP Scott Shuman, an Auburn junior, was selected by the Rays in the 19th round.

  1. Where are the Rockies minor league clubs?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Colorado Springs (AAA) and Jackonsville (AA).

    ReplyDelete
  3. Make that Jacksonville.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Jackonsville is a cool name. I think I will name my dog that.

    ReplyDelete
  5. We need a live rooster to take the curse off Jose's glove and nobody seems to know what to get Millie or Jimmy for their wedding present.

  6. Aeronaut, I am unable to view the video either. I even tried Opera and it doesn't handle it.

As for Jurdan, that is the correct pronunciation. Anyone that pronounces it differently is a heretic.

I propose the stadium be renamed Shug-Hare Stadium. Eventually over time the name will be distorted and eventually become known as Sugar Stadium, which works for me.

As for great places to live, Durham is not it. Chapel Hill is great. Durham is a great place to get shot. When I worked in Chapel Hill I was told there were areas of Durham that you just shouldn't venture into. Also, Duke has a beautiful campus in Durham, but if you step off the campus, watch out.

A pro contract automatically includes a 4 year full scholly if the player never makes the majors. Only a handful of players improve their pro draft standing after 3 years of college baseball. The baseball schollys are only for 1 year and most players get pushed out after their Jr year unless their grades will significantly help the APR. Pitcher's arms aren't disrespected in the college game. In general, if the player can afford the pro offer, that't the way to go. A dual talent player can also walkon to a football team after ending the pro deal.

  8. It is nice to see Brandon Jacobs get drafted. Yea, it is possible it could pull him away from football, but it does say that he is an athlete. We had some other runningback back in the 80s that played both football and baseball some of you may have heard of.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Pitcher's arms aren't disrespected in the college game.

    Is that a typo, Hoopie?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'd be tempted to say Jacobs ends up signing a contract. He could get $250,000, which is enough to lead me away from college.

Steve..I was wondering about Durham. I was last there about 20 years ago....and haven't found a reason to go back.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think he's more valuable as a baseball player.

    ReplyDelete
  13. my right arm was disrespected in college, but by me on my own terms

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anonymous2:20 PM

    Yes..typo...thanks JGT.

IT's up tp $250k for 10th round now? I agree Jay..that should do it.

I helped a buddie and his kid evaluate the offers/contracts a couple years ago. He is now a pitcher in the Red Sox Org.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If the Red Sox are into Jacobs, they'll offer that kind of money.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If Chizik doesn't work out, I have already determined my next favorite choice as head coach. He is Cesar Milan. His methods have been proven on his TV show and also on a special episode of South Park. You really can't beat that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Candlesticks make a nice gift.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Steve if Cesar was our coach, we'd have no room to pick at Nick Saban for being a small fry, shorty, little person, etc. But the dogs in Auburn would be so well behaved!

Congrats to Jacobs! I would much rather see him on the Plains but this aint the economy to turn down a few $100K.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The only reason I don't want football to hurry up and get here is because I love baseball season.

The Braves have won some doozies here lately, I hope they can keep it up.

Congrats to all the Auburn folks who decide to make it a career in baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The JCCW discusses Steele's predictions for Auburn. There aren't really a lot of surprises here. Things of note are things like

-- Auburn had the 10th best recruiting class in the SEC. This isn't surprising. While we did get a couple of feel good recruits, this was probably the worst class in terms of filling our needs since baby Bowden was on the plains.

-- We have had a negative turnover ratio the last two seasons. This is a very good indication of why we have had problems.

-- He also mentions Clint Moseley as being rated only six spots behind Ray Cotton, which I find interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  21. AUBigCat, I do think Cesar would poke Saban in the neck a few times, force him to rollover onto his back, and scratch his belly.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The Rockies Minor League Clubs are Colorado Springs (AAA), Tulsa (AA), and Modesto (A)and Ashville, NC (A)

They have a good bit of former Auburn guys in their system:

    Mark Bellhorn (Colorado Springs)
    Mike Nix (Tulsa)
    Josh Sullivan (Modesto)

Steven Register was a SkySox until the released him. Now he's in the Phillies system (Lehigh Valley)

Jacksonville (AA) is a part of the Marlins system now. Former Tiger Levale Speigner was signed by the club in the offseason and has already worked his way up to AAA (New Orleans) again.

  23. I'm meeting Mal Moore for drinks this evening. Anybody have any questions they would like me to ask?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks for the info, Kevin.

The Rockies have been in Tulsa for several years now. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sure FSJ...
Why did he hire a total tool for the University's head football coach?

    ReplyDelete
  26. And Another: What shade of Hair Club For Men does Saban use?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm sorry, I believe he will need me to specify which head coach I'm referring to.

    ReplyDelete
  28. fsj,

has pete carroll given niki any advice on how to make the ncaa go away while niki has been in LA?

    ReplyDelete
  29. wouldn't you think that jacobs opting for baseball would "open" some room in the 2010 recruiting class for more RB? i know it has been speculated jacobs would be moved to LB. i would, think, if he opts for the $, that opens the possibility there is room for seastrunk, lattimore AND corey grant in the 2010 RB class. i see grant as a slot/rb/hback anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  30. From what I have read, bookgate isn't going to amount to much. I do think the university showed a lack of control, but my guess is that the most will happen is possibly a scholarship or two lost, but nothing more than that. They may even be given a Kiffin.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Chip chip, in the case of Seastrunk and Lattimore, there will be room. If we sign those two, we will make room.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Steve:

I know nothing about the penalties, but look for a couple of the minor sports (Hello track team!) to get smashed.

The issue was that this crap was going on while we were already on probation. Inexcusable.

    Mal needs to go.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just don't replace Mal Moore with Jeremy Foley and I'll be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i was mainly concerned with grant. i watched his film and he looks as good or better than lattimore. grant may not want to come in with those other two. losing an RB from this class may thin the herd a little so to speak. if we get lattimore and seastrunk, i predict eric smith to beat a hasty retreat out of AU after 2009 unless he has a breakout year.

    ReplyDelete
  35. FSJ, I don't know enough to say Mal should go, but it does seem ridiculous when you were already on the hotseat. I just can't believe the NCAA would wack Alabama big time for this one. If so, there is definitely something wrong and they would just be trying to make an example of Bama.

I read somewhere that Bama's response was that it wasn't something that would significantly increase the chances of a recruit coming to Bama, which I think is a fair statement. This shouldn't be a huge smackdown.

    ReplyDelete
  36. agreed fsj. other sports are staring down the barrel this time. football should not get killed.

all the rumor surrounding the other stuff for football would have to prove true and play out before football gets any stiff penalty. that would be a year or two away if that happens.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think there is room for Smith. We will apparently use 2 backs often, so I see us needing a deep backfield.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I really hope they don't do the forfeiting games thing. That is just stupid. If Bama were to forfeit last year's Iron Bowl, we all would still know our butts were thoroughly kicked anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  39. the only way the ncaa could get everyone is to say the problem was so widespread (200 athletes?) that the entire athletic department is banned from postseason participation for one year, or something like that. that would seem to fall in line with a failure to monitor and a big warning shot for the department's repeat violator status. not saying that would happen. it's just the only way i see football being impacted more than anticipated.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hate the idea of forfeiting games also. How does that make anything better? Let the record books show what happened on the field.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Chip I thought about that as well but neither of those backs is a big bruiser like Jacobs. His stats were something like 6-1 230 running 4.58/40 if memory serves. Speedy guys are great but those like Jacobs dont come around everyday.

That said, I dont like the idea of us letting Grant get away if we sign Seastrunk and Lattimore. I think that might come back to bite us especially if he goes to another SEC team like bama.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Lattimore may end up being a pretty good sized back. Seastrunk won't.

    ReplyDelete
  43. out on parole...YIPPEE!!!

FSJ- I wish I could wish the best for you in relation to the pending news as you are certainly deserving. Alas, my upbringing prevents that show of sportsmanship.

  44. from prior thread... top 10 places

don't be knocking Upper St. Clair, a Pittsburgh suburb. Pittsburgh is an absolutely wonderful place to live. Gorgeous city, fantastic cultural events and pro sports, skiing 45 minutes away, pleasant seasons, and super friendly people. There are only 2 negatives about Pittsburgh:
    1. it isn't in NC
    2. it isn't near Auburn

now if you want to bash Durham, NC, which also made the list, go right ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Don't worry THT..

What would a rivalry be without hatred?

    ReplyDelete
  46. That''s the spirit, FSJ!

    Love,
    THT

    ReplyDelete
  47. Kind of like marriage.

    ReplyDelete
  48. michael,

I think everyone should experience the misery that is marriage.

    ReplyDelete
  49. no misery here. I married an Auburn girl from North Carolina. It just can't get any better.

    ReplyDelete
  50. and although she wasn't genetically engineered to hate bama like I was, I do believe she has far surpassed me in that desirous trait.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If you want an interesting place to live with very low housing cost, consider Centralia, PA. That town has one of the most intriguing histories you will ever read.

    ReplyDelete
  52. FSJ - I think mixed marriages are an abomination. Do the true bama fans think similarly?

    ReplyDelete
  53. AUBigCat,
Good point about Jacob's size. Luckily Aycock is similar in size (though a bit shorter at 5'10" 216).

    ReplyDelete
  54. THT...

Mrs. FSJ has an extreme hatred of Tennessee..

Which is interesting because I don't think she had ever been to an Alabama/Tennessee game before she met me.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Mixed Bama/Auburn marriages would be great....

As long as you are on the winning side.

I can imagine that the yearly bets would be outstanding.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Aycock may end up being the surprise of this class. I have read where some think he will be as impressive as McCalebb.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I wrote about my wife in the college newspaper. She was a field hockey player.

    Random, useless piece of information.

  59. I met my wife when she called into the Auburn-area radio station at which I was working and requested some Dylan.

At 2AM, from the East Alabama Medical Center lab.

I figured, hey, college-educated, employed, has some musical taste, and sounds cute. . .what the hey?

Working out thus far, 25+ years later.

  60. Well played, freep.

Had my wife called into the radio station and asked for some New Order at 2 a.m., we might have hooked up literally weeks earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I told you all he was more valuable as a baseball player.

With that said, I have no reason to believe he was going to be a grayshirt.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I wish him the very best. He's still an Auburn Tiger in my book, until he pulls a willis

    ReplyDelete
  68. He signed with the "Red" Sox. He is dead to me.

    Just kidding.

  76. Reading the criteria for how US News chose their top 10, I can certainly see why Auburn made the list. I want to move back!!!

In selecting our Best Places to Live for 2009, U.S. News took a thrift-conscious approach: We looked for affordable communities that have strong economies and plenty of fun things to do. The cities we selected are as distinct as America itself—ranging from a quaint suburb to a live-music mecca. But whether you prefer hiking through the Rocky Mountains, pulling a fish out of the Atlantic Ocean, or grilling hot dogs at a college football tailgate, here are 10 places that will fill up your daybook without emptying your wallet.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Mon - I echo Hoopie's sentiments. That was a very well written article. Thanks for the link.

    ReplyDelete
  78. College towns tend to score high in surveys like that. They also tend to score high in lists of places to retire.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yep, Nova, hubby and I are counting down the years. Currently looking for lots on which to build. My sis & her husband also plan on retiring there, so we are looking to build a compound.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm considering it as well although I've got a minimum of 7.5 years. It could work if I could a position running a teaching lab or core facility at the University. I'm more likely to wind up in the mountains though with frequent visits to the sea.

It's the only place in Alabama I'd consider returning to.

    ReplyDelete
  81. by the time I get to retire to Auburn, it will be straight into the Auburn nursing home.

    ReplyDelete
  82. JayGT- Many thanks to you and Shannon for that superb video of the meeting last night. It was nice to see CGC's sense of humor; that doesn't come across so much in his carefully worded answers to reporters' questions.

I also enjoyed the Police Academy video that followed, but I lost interest quickly in the hurricane task force meeting.

    ReplyDelete
  83. For those that care.....

The running rumor on Tiderinsider is that Alabama will "vacate" around 10 wins from 2006-2007 and not much else as far as football goes.

We will see how right they are.

If true, this just means that Shula's record is even worse now. :-P

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous7:13 PM

FSJ...that sounds like either wishful thinking or a negotiated settlement. Give up some wins from loser seasons in order to prevent losing TV exposure or recruits now. Surely the SEC doesn't have THAT much sway over the NCAA.

If the athletes had cheated and thus become ineligible, then maybe forfieted games would be appropriate punishment. Loss of control should result in punishment that affects now.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Well that's just it Hoopie...

I think it was the athletes that were cheating.

They were getting more textbooks than they needed (via the athletic textbooks system) and either giving or selling them to other students.

We will see how it turns out tomorrow. Cecil Hurt has now updated his original column with info about vacating wins from 2006-2007.

    ReplyDelete
  86. FSJ - please feel free to start a tideinsider rumor on my behalf, filled with all sorts of terrible (from a tide fan perspective) penalties. Throw in some waterboarding of Satan, just for kicks.

    ReplyDelete
  87. The best Tiderinsider rumor I can remember is the one about Spurrier eating dinner with Mal Moore at the Bright Star Restaurant when Shula was fired. There were actual people driving to Bessemer (I think) to see if it was true.

    ReplyDelete
  88. And for the record I think that "vacating" wins is about the craziest thing I've ever heard of. It doesn't count as a win for the other team.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I'll never forget Tennessee Stud(Roy Adams)scooping all of the Alabama writers on Alabama's punishment in the Albert Means case. The cast of characters in that episode will be hard to top.

    ReplyDelete
  90. depressed...

You aren't telling me anything..I've actually MET Roy Adams before at an Alabama/Tennessee tailgate.

    Talk about a weirdo.

    ReplyDelete
  91. UAT's punishment is that it will lose two scholarships each year forever. Shrewd negotiator that UAT is, so will all the SEC schools per the new rule. Sneaky bass poops.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Somehow after I mentioned how stupid I thought vacating wins are, I had the feeling that is what the NCAA would choose. Go figure. Why not throw down some real punishment like forcing them to hire Shula as the head coach again or something.

    ReplyDelete
  93. THT,
We have already purchased our final resting plots in Town Creek cemetery.

    ReplyDelete
  94. FSJ, was Logan Young with him at the tailgate or was this after LY's untimely exit from this world?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Logan was still alive but it was after their falling out.

It was before the 2002 game where I met Roy.

    ReplyDelete
  96. The NCAA really does need to get more innovative with their punishment. For instance if you are found guilty of paying a football player $100,000 you should just have to pay one player at every college in American $100,000. That should clear that problem up pretty quick and also make for some happy football players.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Anonymous7:47 PM

FSJ....I meant to say "academic" cheating causes ineligibility, which would cause forfeits. I'm not sure if book theft through manipulation of procedure, discovered after the fact, affects player eligibility and game forfeits. Allowing athletes to manipulate the procedure is more of an institutional failure to control.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Dang gummit. We are in the worst part of the summer. We have gay dance reality shows on TV. Crap!!!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Agreed Hoopie.

It certainly was an institutional failure to monitor the process.

    ReplyDelete
  100. so what time is "tomorrow afternoon"?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Anonymous7:51 PM

Is Logan Young the guy that fell UP the stairs?

    ReplyDelete
  102. I got an even better idea than the forfeits. How about if a school plays an inelligible player in a game, the next time the schools face off, the other school gets a bonus 7 points for each ineligible player that played the last time. So, if say 20 players played that were inelligble, you could be down 140-0 at the openning kickoff.

    ReplyDelete
  103. correct quote should be "Thursday afternoon."

FSJ - has a time been set?

    ReplyDelete
  104. SteveFC - give them the TD, but make the team benefitting actually kick the extra points. That would be exciting to watch 20 extra points before the opening kickoff.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Hoopie- yes, Logan was the man that fell up the stairs. That whole affair was just unbelievable, including his death.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Passing through ATL airport for the second time today.

I am convinced that half the population own magic mirrors. There can be no other explanation of how these people could leave the house dressed like this.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Aubie - Not everyone can have your good looks and impeccable sense of style. Oh, and calves...

Do any of you have an eNewspaper? Where you can read the entire paper, ads and all, online?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Agreed depressed....

Logan's death was a bizarre as the whole Memphis case.

    ReplyDelete
  110. THT...

I'm not sure of a time but I figure by early afternoon tomorrow it will be official.

However, I think we will all know before then.

    ReplyDelete
  111. calves....that remark didn't go un-noticed

    ReplyDelete
  112. Jet,
Where are you? I have a question.

    ReplyDelete
  113. It's 9:44pm for me and I've only in the past 15 minutes stopped working for the man after having started at 7am. I did take a 6 mile run break though so there's that.

THT - re: abomination, I must confess that my wife claims to be a UAT fan. That's her solitary flaw, well, not exactly solitary but beyond that I'd be nitpicking. I say she claims to be a fan because she really doesn't care anything about sports at all. She has gladly attended many an AU game with me and I'm gradually winning her over from the dark side. She also has no problem with the fact that as our 2 y/o son's vocabulary has increased, he can now say "War Eagle, Hey" quite well and does it whenever he recognizes anything AU related. He's a fine boy.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Speaking of AU players and the baseball draft, does anyone remember Jason Standridge(I think that was his last name)? He was a QB who committed to AU under Bowden, but he was drafted in the MLB draft(by the Devil Rays if I'm not mistaken). Did he ever make it to the major league team?

  118. Depressed, if a cup of coffee is a short visit to the bigs, then Standridge had a shot of espresso.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Brag alert - My son-in-law just got an offer to clerk for Chief Justice Dubina of the Circuit Court of Appeals. What is the low down on Judge Dubina? Good guy?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Depressed,
He played for Tampa, Texas, Cincinnati, Kansas City and then to Japan. Now in the Marlins minor league. We saw him play for the Reds when we lived in Cincinnati.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Mon - I'm not aware of current newspapers that have full page layout online. Historic newspapers have been scanned and can be viewed in their original layout, ads included.

    ReplyDelete
  122. depressed- I remember Jason and I don't believe he ever made it to the Bigs, but I could be wrong

    ReplyDelete
  123. CincyT ...

He's a good man and fine judge. His daughter is a city councilmanwomanperson, and has decided to run for Congress against our former mayor. Big Congrats.

On the sad side, one of your sister's (?) co-workers at the Senate passed away, and I'm saddened by that.

    ReplyDelete
  124. THT - because I work hard or because of the wife thing?

Eddie - perhaps you're a victim of love? (Eagles reference)

    ReplyDelete
  125. Bro Jet,
Rene' told me about that. She was pretty upset. She really enjoyed working with her.

    ReplyDelete
  126. the wife thing. I'll never be mature enough to overlook that type of "flaw" for something so unimportant as love.

    ReplyDelete
  127. ElTurbo reports that one of his group mates for Camp War Eagle is the younger brother of former AU tight end Cole Bennett, who is best remembered for recovering Carnell's fumble in the end zone for our first TD against the ObKnoxvillians in the SECCG in 2004, and for scoring our last TD vs. UAT in 2005.

He is not best remembered for letting Brandon Cox's pass clank off him into the hands of Derek Pegues in the dreaded loss to State in 2007, setting up our revenge win (3-2) in 2008.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Aaron will start with Judge Dubina in fall of 2010 after graduation from Vandy in May. He is pretty pumped to get the clerkship. He is pretty wonderful son-in-law.

    ReplyDelete

  130. THT,
Did I miss it or have you expressed your delight at the Pens tying up the series last night?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Jet, you're with me on this, aren't you?...the flaw thing, not the imbecile part

    ReplyDelete
  132. THT - that's a valid point.

  133. Good for Aaron.

National news outlets that the UAT punishment from the NCAA centers on "no more ice cream for players while incarcerated, and a noogie for Mal Moore."

  134. THT,
I was at a wedding reception this weekend with a couple who named their surprise, late in life son, Crosby after Sidney Crosby.

  135. THT - Our local newspaper is available online 100% - every page, ads included - it is the COOLEST thing - You have to have a 7 say subscription to get it, but this means I will actually be reading the paper now.

  136. THT & perhaps Jet - does it help matters if I reinforce the earlier statement of her lack of concern about sports that it's not uncommon at all for her to go shopping during the Iron Bowl? She just doesn't care. Her only basis for making such a ludicrous claim of affiliation is that she was raised in a UAT fan house.

  137. Congrats, Cincy!

  138. Thanks, Monica. We are celebrating with Graeter's ice cream - which is killing my diet, but worth it!

  139. THT ...

As much as I'd like to preach that a mixed marriage is an abomination, I cannot. I wouldn't do it, and would pray that my children find fine young Auburn fans to marry.

ElTurbo has turned his girlfriend of three-plus years away from FSU. Stewardess, well, she's hooked up with one of "them." I am concerned.

As the Good Book says, "Love suffers long ... never fails ... even if it is with a UAT fan."

Mrs. Jet was a nominal Auburn fan when we met. She has improved her standing.

  140. Completely worth it! This is a huge deal (not that you need a huge deal for icecream), but a huge deal.

  141. On that note, I'm going to bed knowing that I can now rest easy. Adios Muchachos.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Marrying a bammer is worse than marrying someone who gets dressed before they open presents on Christmas morning - and that is pretty bad!

    ReplyDelete
  143. cincy - delight is a bit strong; more like relieved that the commies didn't get to raise the Cup on Penguins ice, again.

It's hard to be delighted when you know what's in store on Friday.... or do we???

    Beware of the Penguin

  144. Thanks for all of the Standridge replies. Cincy, I had no idea he had played for that many teams. Talk about a journeyman career.

    ReplyDelete
  145. C'mon, where is your faith in your Penguins?! They'll never win with that attitude. Just think what you have done for this sport. I've gone from not even knowing there were Pittsburgh Penguins to enjoying dinner with someone named for a player I never heard of, and am now rooting for the Penguins to win the Stanley Cup, which I also couldn't have told you a thing about a few weeks ago. All due to one man with a contagious dream for Penguins victory!

  146. my daughter's email address includes 6687 (Lemieux's and Crosby's #s). I think she's a bigger Pens fan than I am. In fact, she undoubtedly is.

    ReplyDelete
  147. My grandmother calls marrying a Bammer "contamination of the gene pool." Jet, good luck with Stewardess, I can only imagine the sleepless nights you are suffering.

    ReplyDelete
  148. news reporting no scholly's lost for tide football. 3 years probation added. more severe for the other programs, but no details.

  149. Very sad news, but Coach QUick died earlier this evening. Hard to believe he was just diagnosed in December.

    ReplyDelete
  150. cincy - I'll watch Friday night through 2 periods. If Pens leading after 2, I'll keep watching. Pens are 10-0 these playoffs when leading after two. Conversely, Red Wings are something like 27-0 in playoffs when leading after two (over past few years).

Pens have 5 goals in 6 Finals games in Detroit this year and last.

Home teams are 12-2 in Finals Game 7s.

Teams (like Pens) losing first two Finals games on road have 3.1% chance of winning the cup.

Teams (like commies) who win Game 5 have ~80% chance of winning Cup overall, much higher if (like commies) they are playing Game 7 at home.

    That's why I'm so optimistic

  151. My sister married a confused soul ... he had his undergrad from Auburn, and his masters from UAT. And his soul was wayward when they started dating.

Dad took an "aggressive" approach toward the relationship. Thirty plus years later, my sister and her husband are doing right and have sent their three boys to Auburn.

As Stewardess has yet to turn 16 ... I am playing it cool ... for now.

  152. I'm lucky so far. My grandfather graduated from API. Both parents and their siblings are AU grads, as well as all my siblings and myself. I have multiple nephews and nieces that are AU grads. Now, if I can just get my daughters act score up a couple points......
