Hey everyone. I'm now on my way to Cincinnati for a little solo time with Wifey. We're planning a day at Kings Island and a movie/Reds day as well.
I like these few days a year.

ReplyDeleteA few years back when Hot Carter signed everyone, players and coaches rave that he has one of the fastest first steps off the snap. However, they said he has two problems, one his weight and two he bites on plays and gets beat on the run. So you know the talent is there. When he is on and the play is in the direction he picked he makes it, but otherwise I have always seen him overunning the play as the running back/qb runs by him.

ReplyDeleteThat has seemed to be the trend with our DE's over the years... They are great at the speed rush, but are bad in run support and get caught up in misdirection too easily.
ReplyDeleteWhen something like that becomes a trend, then it is too coincidental. It has to be something in the lack of development of those aspects with our DE prospects.
Hopefully Rocker can alleviate some of those deficiencies.
I think Hot Carter has a tremendous year this year.

ReplyDeleteIt's funny you should mention Frank McIntosh. I worked with him for 3 summers while at Auburn. He is (was) a park ranger for the Corps of Engineers on the AL River Lakes. Although limited at Auburn, he tore up some AISA records at Wilcox Academy. As with most Auburn folks, a super swell guy.

ReplyDeleteHaven't all of our "big time" DEs leveled off after a 'hot' start? McClover started hot, got a lot of hype, but never developed any further. Groves was supposed to surpass those abilities, but after a great sophmore campaign never really developed any further. Then Coleman was supposed to be the heir apparent. Again, he had a superb sophmore season and planed off like a Skeeter bass boat on Lake Martin. Now, Carter was supposed to be what those guys never made it to, and he hasn't developed much since his freshman season.

Almost all of our big time ends never heard of a thing called run defense. McClover was the worst at running by the guy with the ball. Wisconsin turned running right at McClover into an art form.

ReplyDeleteAs far as DE play, anyone thought that maybe it seems they have leveled off because they have had no offense the last two season's and been asked to play pratically 3/4 the game? I wouldn't suggest that McClover leveled off. Last I recall, his last regular season game was unforgetable. I blame the so called lack of production due to bad offense and being on the field a majority of the game and being fatigued. Of course, I could be wrong.

ReplyDeleteI agree, enough of the "All Auburn, All Orange" crap. Gimick's are cheap. What color's will you wear this fall? I will alternate between orange and blue. I love having the stadium mixed with orange and blue as opposed to the "Sea of Orange".
ReplyDeleteHaving speed DE's who only look for the QB isn't always a great option except on 3rd and long...and that even killed us vs Miss State two years ago when Groves didn't even know the play he was just trying for the sack record and let Dixon run right by him for 15 yards on a 3rd and 13.

I've always been a big fan of everyone wearing Orange, but when it became a corporate thing just to sell the yearly updated "All Auburn, All Orange" deal a couple of years ago that did suck.
I guess Auburn to me, has had situational DE's over the most recent years. Marks was probably the best all-around DE the last 3-4 years. We definitely love the speed rushing DE's on 3rd and longs.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about Torbor... But he was really an OLB playing on the line. He dropped back and allowed Dansby to rush almost as much as he rushed.
ReplyDeleteOf course back then our D-line ran stunts and twists and really worked to confuse the o-line. Haven't seen that since.... Chizik left.
I just like to not be told what color I should wear. I used to tote the company line and wear my orange, then I decided a few years ago to mix it up and wear a lot more blue. No matter what we do, it will always be coroporate if there is a way to do so.

ReplyDeleteI was behind him in line at A-Day getting a hot dog a couple of years ago. Really nice guy.
Torbor and Marcus Washington were both LB's who played down at DE a lot and both were really effective in that role, because they could stop the run as well as pass rush.
It's good to have a speed rusher, but sometimes a 220-230 end isn't the best option.
I just hope that Chizik and Roof gets the D all on one page, because the only problems we have had over the year on D is when people are confused as to what their assignments are during a game.

MrsTHT and I do not wear orange, period. AU has never had an "All Auburn, All Orange". They've had a lot of "All Auburn, Everybody Orange but Mr/MrsTHT"

ReplyDeleteJet...We did the Ocoee with the church youth group. Ages 13-50. Wifey and daughter had only done the Nantahala previously and had no problems. It's challenging, but not like the Chatooga.

ReplyDeleteI guess the other point I glean from that top ten is that 2 teams from the state of Alabama are in it and garner almost $120m. The fact that a smallish, poorer state can raise that much indicates 2 things:

As for our defensive line, I think we will be pretty solid this season. We could use another DE to step up, but I think we will be happy with them.
My question for you is what player is likely to move to linebacker from another position? I am beating someone will move.

ReplyDeletedidn't have time to read much of it. read AU and for someone on the outside looking in, dead on. there is a lot of unproven talent and no sec qb that we know of. gus could very well change that, but we will see. if injury is not an issue at some key places we'll be fine and in just about every big game.
Thanks Salsa. That article is pretty good and pretty accurate. The most likely moves would make things about how I would have suspected it. I am kind of surprised at UGA in the middle and UT at the bottom. Auburn should likely be at the bottom. Bama or LSU could possibly be in the middle. In general though, I think it was fair.
ReplyDeleteI do disagree that our receiver depth is an issue. We have the depth. We just need playmakers.
Depth and quality productive depth are two different things. We'll find out if the problem with the WR's was just bad coaching from Knox or if they just weren't that good to begin with this year.
ReplyDeleteInteresting read, I think he's spot on, particularly with the bubble teams in each category. We know Alabama has some players, we don't know that they can duplicate the success from last year. UGA lost a lot of talent but they've recruited well so they could very well move up. Auburn, he pretty much nailed and while I wouldn't call us a pushover, we very easily could be without some quality production from the offense. Re: UT, they said the cupboard was pretty bare and they did a good job recruitng. Lane could be a maniac and flameout, or he coule be a genius. Time will tell.

Auburn's roster looks to have a number of good, quality players, but the main difference between AU and, say LSU and Alabama, is the number of top-line All-SEC type of players. I won't say Auburn can't win these games, I just think AU has to get more turnovers, out-scheme them, or hope the other team is not playing at their best to overcome the talent edge of these type teams. I hope people won't take this as my saying Auburn stinks, because I'm not. I just think the attrition rate and sub-par recruiting is starting to show.

Yes, mediocrity is what is expected this season.
ReplyDeleteYes, contending in the west every year is what we had with Tuberville.
But I wouldn't get all bent out of shape over the lower expectations this season. Yes, we are use to more, but a coaching change has it's price and there is definitely a chance we will exceed expectations. I expect our defense to be one of the best in the SEC.
As for offense, it is very true we need a savior at QB. I have actually not even been looking for that. At present we don't even have an average SEC QB. Hopefully Malzahn will surprise us.
Realistic expectations for this year are to have a winning season. If we can get into the top 3 in the west, I would call the season very successful.
The west will be tough this season, but I don't think we are as far behind talent wise as many think. I do think we have serious depth issues, primarily at linebacker and the offensive line. I can see us getting lucky on the offensive line and making it through the season okay, but the linebackers need more depth.
I blame HABOTN for my optimism. Normally, I generate my own AU optimism only to have it crushed by a mediocre if not downright disastrous season (a la '73, '75, '84, '03, '08). Given the extraneous source of my optimism this year, I'm hoping the results will be different.

Be open and reserved. I am not making any predictions as none of us know. But I do know we have talent and we should be most of the teams on our schedule. If we would have not tripped ourselves up and if our offense would have helped our D at least some of the time, its a whole different year. I think the defense will be good not great and the season depends on our offense, again. :)

Interesting moment at the tennis court the other day...

Of course, we didn't really have our expectations crushed until our third game, when we went to UT and Tony Coke-head Robinson wore us out. The only thing that took that year beyond mediocre was Bo winning the Heisman.

ReplyDeleteTrue, THT, but we started '85 at #2, then went into the UT game #1. We also lost to unranked Bammer on the Tiffin field goal and got crushed in the Cotton Bowl by Texas A&M. I have always blamed the OC at the time (Jack Crowe) for '85 not being a huge year. We didn't have a very good QB, but we were loaded everywhere else. I guess that year really sticks with me because it was my freshman year at AU.
ReplyDeleteTHT, the 1984 and 1985 Alabama losses were two of the more painful games I've watched Auburn play. The argument could be made that AU had the better team both seasons. Amazing how Dye turned things around after those years.

ReplyDeleteWe have been spoiled watching the Bammers self-implode every few years. This present situation may take longer to implode.
I know that there are a few folks that say a Bama-Banhammer is forthcoming. I'm hearing that it's not. Without regard to banhammers...let's be patient, build a team and beat the crap out of them.

ReplyDelete84 & 85 were disasters because we were never settled at QB. Pat Washington was one of the worst regular QB's in Auburn history and after him we completely changed our offense.
ReplyDeleteAs far as 2009 goes, it's hard to have expectations when I have no clue what we really have at almost every position.
What really hurt about 84 and 85 aside from being #1 in both seasons and ending 9-4 and 8-5 were those losses to Alabama.
ReplyDeleteHad we not slipped up in those games against Alabama teams that weren't good we would have won 8 in a row over them.
Arrgh, RK, that makes it even worse. For some reason, I've never thought about that we would have had 8 in a row had we won those two.
ReplyDeleteAmazing on teams with Bo & Fullwood, even with Bo being injured half of 1984, that we struggled moving the ball because we couldn't get any production at QB.
ReplyDeleteQuarterback production, save a couple of years here and there, has been a problem at Auburn. I think it's because traditionally this is a defensive, run the ball type of team. That's not attractive to top flight QBs for the most part.
ReplyDeleteThe best indicator of how good we will be this season are two road games back to back, Tennessee and Arkansas. If we win both, I would say we are going to have a good season. More than likely we split and are about as expected. If we lose both, lets start talking recruiting.

ReplyDeleteDye -- who is my favorite all-time Auburn coach on many levels -- mangled the '84 game.
First, he should have kicked the chipshot FG for the lead and place the game in the hands of the defense. Secondly, if you go for it, you give the ball to Bo. Period.
85 was just an incredible game. If Benji Roland looks up, he clocks Al Bell on the reverse. If (name redacted) makes a tackle inbounds, ARGH!
Leigh's daddy made a heck of a kick. Tip your hat, shake their hands and walk away.
What did Dye do? His two coordinators -- probably two of the closest men to him on the face of the earth -- were dismissed.

ReplyDeleteJet, Dye was always willing to make the hard choices necessary to move the program forward. Who would have thought after the 85 Bama game that AU was about to run off 4 in a row over The Evil Empire?

Also, who would have expected after the blow out loss to A&M in the bowl game in 85 that we would move to a more pro-style offense in 1986.
ReplyDeleteYou know, as much criticism as I have seen over last season, many of you will look back fondly upon it. I mean, could anything be more exciting than a 3-2 football game? Who will over forget the onsider punt against LSU? How can you live without the joy of hearing your OC describe how big of an idiot he is? Sure, we lost some games, but isn't it better to have a more considerate understanding offense that looks to fulfill the needs of both the defense and the offense, where everyone gets to play, and .... umm, wait a minute. Never mind.

ReplyDeleteTHT, if those are his true priorities, the depth chart should be enough to send him to Auburn. Has Saban convinced these players that he can give playing time to 15 linebackers? I'll go out on a limb and say Stanford is a long-shot. I suspect Bama will be his final choice.
