Tuesday chatter

Hey everyone. I'm now on my way to Cincinnati for a little solo time with Wifey. We're planning a day at Kings Island and a movie/Reds day as well.

I like these few days a year.

Thanks for staying with the HABOTN even thought it's most high-profile bloggist is chillin' three states away.

Today's topic: Will Hot Carter become a star or will he level off as a merely useful player?

I have an opinion on this. I'll share later.

  2. Dear Leader- I have my suspicisions. :)

  3. Eddie...
What's your take on the QB situation?

    (i'm kidding)

    ReplyDelete
  4. ehyou- I think the Falcons have a solid starter in Matt Ryan. Thanks for asking.

  5. A few years back when Hot Carter signed everyone, players and coaches rave that he has one of the fastest first steps off the snap. However, they said he has two problems, one his weight and two he bites on plays and gets beat on the run. So you know the talent is there. When he is on and the play is in the direction he picked he makes it, but otherwise I have always seen him overunning the play as the running back/qb runs by him.

  6. Good morning Hotties.

    ReplyDelete
  7. That has seemed to be the trend with our DE's over the years... They are great at the speed rush, but are bad in run support and get caught up in misdirection too easily.
When something like that becomes a trend, then it is too coincidental. It has to be something in the lack of development of those aspects with our DE prospects.
Hopefully Rocker can alleviate some of those deficiencies.

I think Hot Carter has a tremendous year this year.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Good morning, by the way!

    ReplyDelete
  9. A Hot Carter sounds like something you'd have to pay double for in a seedy motel just off the strip in Las Vegas.

  10. Jay,
Two things I miss about Cincinnati - Kings Island and the Reds. I love the Beast - good old fashioned wooden roller coaster. The ballpark is lovely. Such a great location on the river. Do you eat Montgomery Inn pulled pork sandwiches at the ballpark? You MUST go get Graeter's ice cream. Mmmmmm

  11. Good lord, Longshore is *%*%*% all over himself with his bama love fest and reliving of the Auburn game.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hot Carter: Has leveled off.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hot Carter is going to get a lot of attention by opposing OL's this year. It will be tough for him in that regards. Leveled off, I don't know.

  14. Morning all...If you haven't taken the opportunity to hit your local cineplex and checkout the J-Z story, "The Hangover," I strongly urge you to do so. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you might even wet your pants. This is a cautionary tale of life decisions made against the backdrop of the Vegas skyline. J-Z gives it an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Until his namesake does otherwise, a Hot Carter is now available for 50 percent off.

In fact, I suggest he be known as Lukewarm Carter until he achieves.

    ReplyDelete
  16. J-Z, I concur, excellent movie. The opening scene is absolutely awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was pleasantly surprised with Mike Tyson's acting ability in the film as well.

    ReplyDelete
  18. i heard that tyson had to be taught how to throw a fake punch after he nearly took the guy's head off during a take. haven't seen the pic yet, but i hear it's good.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hangover is easily the best film of the summer so far! I havent laughed out loud that much in a theater in a very long time.

Hot Carter has definately leveled off. Perhaps the new staff can turn his pilot light up and make him HOT again.

  20. Jay what kind of camera do you use for photos when you're on vacation? Do you use the same camera for work?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was noticing AUBIGCAT's profile pic, and I was wondering, who here likes the Tiger Eyes? I can go either way with or without the Tiger Eyes. They over did it when it came out, they even had it on the uniform pants.

It's funny you should mention Frank McIntosh. I worked with him for 3 summers while at Auburn. He is (was) a park ranger for the Corps of Engineers on the AL River Lakes. Although limited at Auburn, he tore up some AISA records at Wilcox Academy. As with most Auburn folks, a super swell guy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. J-Z has opposible thumbs?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Haven't all of our "big time" DEs leveled off after a 'hot' start? McClover started hot, got a lot of hype, but never developed any further. Groves was supposed to surpass those abilities, but after a great sophmore campaign never really developed any further. Then Coleman was supposed to be the heir apparent. Again, he had a superb sophmore season and planed off like a Skeeter bass boat on Lake Martin. Now, Carter was supposed to be what those guys never made it to, and he hasn't developed much since his freshman season.

Did our coaches just tap their max potential way early in their careers at AU, or did they fail to develop the players beyond that point?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Eddie, i would say that my enthusiasm for the 'Tiger Eyes' logo has leveled off.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like tiger eyes... Just not the cheesy over-commercialized version that AU employs.

Call me nuts, I like the Corndog logo that they have at midfield.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i would agree that LSU's midfield logo is pretty pimp.

Brother Jet, what's on tap for you today here in East Tennessee?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Almost all of our big time ends never heard of a thing called run defense. McClover was the worst at running by the guy with the ball. Wisconsin turned running right at McClover into an art form.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I do too D.Miller.

As far as DE play, anyone thought that maybe it seems they have leveled off because they have had no offense the last two season's and been asked to play pratically 3/4 the game? I wouldn't suggest that McClover leveled off. Last I recall, his last regular season game was unforgetable. I blame the so called lack of production due to bad offense and being on the field a majority of the game and being fatigued. Of course, I could be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  31. i don't mind the tiger eyes, but i could live the rest of my life without another "all auburn, all orange" day.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Reggie Torbor to me was our most consistent DE in recent years.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Agreed Rk. Probably why he ended up not making it in the NFL, or at least with Carolina. Is he with any other team now?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think he was with the Texans last year.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree, enough of the "All Auburn, All Orange" crap. Gimick's are cheap. What color's will you wear this fall? I will alternate between orange and blue. I love having the stadium mixed with orange and blue as opposed to the "Sea of Orange".

    ReplyDelete
  36. Having speed DE's who only look for the QB isn't always a great option except on 3rd and long...and that even killed us vs Miss State two years ago when Groves didn't even know the play he was just trying for the sack record and let Dixon run right by him for 15 yards on a 3rd and 13.

    ReplyDelete
  37. personally i like the sea of orange. the BLUE OUT for the Tennessee game last year looked cool.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the unified color when you watch a game on TV.

Penn State does it right with the all white.

I've always been a big fan of everyone wearing Orange, but when it became a corporate thing just to sell the yearly updated "All Auburn, All Orange" deal a couple of years ago that did suck.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I guess Auburn to me, has had situational DE's over the most recent years. Marks was probably the best all-around DE the last 3-4 years. We definitely love the speed rushing DE's on 3rd and longs.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You're right about Torbor... But he was really an OLB playing on the line. He dropped back and allowed Dansby to rush almost as much as he rushed.
Of course back then our D-line ran stunts and twists and really worked to confuse the o-line. Haven't seen that since.... Chizik left.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I just like to not be told what color I should wear. I used to tote the company line and wear my orange, then I decided a few years ago to mix it up and wear a lot more blue. No matter what we do, it will always be coroporate if there is a way to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Didn't Torbor win a ring with the Giants? Maybe I'm thinking the wrong guy.

By the way, it's great to have Mr. Hand here on the HABOTN

    ReplyDelete
  43. Is Hot Carter a reference to Antoine Carter (AC), if so, I have a pretty good reason as to why he hasn't developed into a star.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Scottie B ...

We're about to load up the Family Truckster and head out for a whitewater rafting trip down the Upper Pigeon.

ElTurbo and I want to do the Ocoee one day, but with the rafting rookies, we decided this would be better.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The Ocoee is a great trip Bro Jet. You will definitely have a good time when you get to do that one.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Never been a big fan of the Tiger Eyes myself.

Give me plain old orange AU fitted hat any day....

    LT

    ReplyDelete
  48. TommyD ...

That'll be a boys trip next summer, I would imagine.

    ReplyDelete
  49. What reason is that, 1292?

    ReplyDelete
  50. nice Jet. we were debating on going to Dollywood on Friday but i doubt it'll happen. if you're passing back through Knoxville and you want to meet up for a coffee or something let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Torbor did get a trophy with the Giants.

I was behind him in line at A-Day getting a hot dog a couple of years ago. Really nice guy.

Torbor and Marcus Washington were both LB's who played down at DE a lot and both were really effective in that role, because they could stop the run as well as pass rush.

It's good to have a speed rusher, but sometimes a 220-230 end isn't the best option.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just hope that Chizik and Roof gets the D all on one page, because the only problems we have had over the year on D is when people are confused as to what their assignments are during a game.

Usually we are really good on D, but there are games where we aren't and it's almost always due to missed assignments.

    ReplyDelete
  53. MrsTHT and I do not wear orange, period. AU has never had an "All Auburn, All Orange". They've had a lot of "All Auburn, Everybody Orange but Mr/MrsTHT"

    ReplyDelete
  54. Take Coleman out of the mix, and which players on the D-Line can be considered stars?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Eddie, once we get you your custom navy #17 ROLLISON jersey your wardrobe will be set on gamedays for the next 4 years anyways. no worries.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I found this kind of interesting:

According to a recent report released by Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, the Auburn football program pulled in a whopping $59.67 million in revenue in 2007-08. It was the sixth-highest total in all of college football. Below are the top 10 totals brought in (in millions).

    1. Texas: $72.95
    2. Georgia: $67.05
    3. Florida: $66.1
    4. Ohio State: $65.16
    5. Notre Dame: $59.77
    6. Auburn: $59.67
    7. Michigan: $57.46
    8. Alabama: $57.37
    9. Penn State: $53.76
    10. LSU: $52.68

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm not sure there is a star on the DL. Jake Ricks looked good at times as did Michael Goggins, but neither would be considered stars.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The tiger eyes suxes.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous10:52 AM

Jet...We did the Ocoee with the church youth group. Ages 13-50. Wifey and daughter had only done the Nantahala previously and had no problems. It's challenging, but not like the Chatooga.

If you do the Ocoee..definitely jump in at the slow, deep part for a "refreshing" experience.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anonymous10:53 AM

Scott..I saw those financial stats last week also. I was surprised that we brought in more than the Corndogs. That's a large state named school without competition.

    ReplyDelete
  61. What's for lunch today?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anonymous11:03 AM

I guess the other point I glean from that top ten is that 2 teams from the state of Alabama are in it and garner almost $120m. The fact that a smallish, poorer state can raise that much indicates 2 things:

    1. The importance of CFB to the residents/Alum.

    2. Gives at least a little credence to the Atlanta radio dude that was casting self-esteem claims against the State of Alabama.

What do I think about that? SO WHAT!!!...CALL US CRAZY..CAUSE WE LOVE OUR COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonymous11:09 AM

It took a while for me to warm up to the AU tiger eyes. I now like them.

I haven't been to Baton Rouge since they do the midfield eye...I don't like the look of it from what I see on the tube. It may be cool in person.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous11:14 AM

THT....Let's Go Big Blue!!! I'm old school..."AU Burnt Orange" is to be reserved as a trim color to enhance the navy blue garment.

Scottie's HABOTN T shirts are a glorious example of such.

An SEC Preview from Scout.com that all can access.

I'd like your opinions on this.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hi Salsa,

It's really hard for me to label any SEC team a "pushover," but I am pleased he didn't include AU in that category, and somewhat surprised he placed UT there.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Pretty much on target.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Unfortunately I have always pictured Hot Carter as a one dimensional player. I doubt he will ever become a run stopper.

I don't like the tiger eyes. Give me the logo with the tiger in a sailor looking hat any day.

I don't like other blasphemous stuff like Barfield having us in orange uniforms, or even worse, the touch of ugly Bowden added to our jerseys.

As for our defensive line, I think we will be pretty solid this season. We could use another DE to step up, but I think we will be happy with them.

My question for you is what player is likely to move to linebacker from another position? I am beating someone will move.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Salsa- Pretty much on target. No wow reaction from me.

    ReplyDelete
  70. re: scout sec profile

didn't have time to read much of it. read AU and for someone on the outside looking in, dead on. there is a lot of unproven talent and no sec qb that we know of. gus could very well change that, but we will see. if injury is not an issue at some key places we'll be fine and in just about every big game.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Thanks Salsa. That article is pretty good and pretty accurate. The most likely moves would make things about how I would have suspected it. I am kind of surprised at UGA in the middle and UT at the bottom. Auburn should likely be at the bottom. Bama or LSU could possibly be in the middle. In general though, I think it was fair.

I do disagree that our receiver depth is an issue. We have the depth. We just need playmakers.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Depth and quality productive depth are two different things. We'll find out if the problem with the WR's was just bad coaching from Knox or if they just weren't that good to begin with this year.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Interesting read, I think he's spot on, particularly with the bubble teams in each category. We know Alabama has some players, we don't know that they can duplicate the success from last year. UGA lost a lot of talent but they've recruited well so they could very well move up. Auburn, he pretty much nailed and while I wouldn't call us a pushover, we very easily could be without some quality production from the offense. Re: UT, they said the cupboard was pretty bare and they did a good job recruitng. Lane could be a maniac and flameout, or he coule be a genius. Time will tell.

    ReplyDelete
  74. RK, I agree with your post re: Goggans and Ricks. Auburn's roster looks to have a number of good, quality players, but the main difference between AU and, say LSU and Alabama, is the number of top-line All-SEC type of players. I won't say Auburn can't win these games, I just think AU has to get more turnovers, out-scheme them, or hope the other team is not playing at their best to overcome the talent edge of these type teams. I hope people won't take this as my saying Auburn stinks, because I'm not. I just think the attrition rate and sub-par recruiting is starting to show.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Was that a cogent and cognitive post from Salsa? Someone must've swapped his UAT keyboard for a normal one...I wonder if he knows yet.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous1:02 PM

I thought it was a fair assessment as well. However, I'm not ready to crown Ole Miss just yet. I think they have a big buzzsaw to get through on October 10. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Or is it the other way around, Salsa?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Does anybody have the '09 helmet schedule excel file? If so, could you please send it to me. Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Anonymous1:09 PM

Sean, that's an interesting point looking at the matchup on paper. However, whate'er deficiencies Alabama may have on offense should be solved or worked around at that point and I believe Saban's defense will be one of the Top 3 in the nation.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Miller, Google is your friend. You'll find it much faster that way.

    ReplyDelete
  81. You make a decent point there SS. I do think as far as surprises go, there will be a few this year.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Only problem with searching Google for it at work is that every site that comes up is blocked or flagged by Big Brother.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Miller, you've got mail!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous1:24 PM

How did Antoine Carter become "Hot Carter?"

    ReplyDelete
  85. Anonymous1:48 PM

He's been Hot Carter since HS. He has H O T tatooed on his neck.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Anonymous1:52 PM

The article mentioned overall AU depth as an issue. I think OL is our only true depth problem this year. Qb/Wr, until proven otherwise, are the talent problems. Reading the "most likely to move down" paragraph caused a chill to run down my spine.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Anonymous1:52 PM

Kind of a whack nickname, but whatever floats your ice cubes.

Re: the Scout link from earlier

Labeling the "middle pack" of the SEC as "Pretenders" seems a bit pretentious if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
  88. "I think I'll go get me a neck tat!"

If I only had a nickel for every time that thought has crossed my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Hoopie,

I'd say we are also thin at LB this year as well.

Probably thin on talent at QB, but we do have warm bodies there.

OL is the biggest concern. If the OL holds up, I see Ben Tate being a 1,200 yard back this year.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Anonymous1:55 PM

Actually from the looks of the tat...it was homemade, so you could maybe go that route also.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Anonymous2:01 PM

RK...I am a totally spoiled AU fan in that I hardly ever sweat the D. I willl be shocked if the LBs don't step up.

My wife wants me to get "stud" tatted down one side of my neck and "muffin" down the other...nice!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Anonymous2:06 PM

Anybody got anything pierced (besides ears, I mean)?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Anonymous2:07 PM

JG interviewed Mr. Carter last year and the general impression I got from the interview was that he is a good kid and related to other AU folks. Probably in the July or August 08 archives.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Marcus Washington,

Does anybody recall the name of the recruit he knocked out that was on a recruiting visit?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Someone said Tim Hawthorne was going to change his name to Van Wilder he has been at school for so long.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anonymous2:10 PM

My 21 year old daughter had a second set of ear piercings performed and I came unglued. That's the only extraneous piercngs in our family.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Anonymous2:13 PM

TH needs to step up now or neveh. There is some talent starting to show up at the beginnning of the pipeline.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Giving you your most anticipated Fbaum show update!

Terry Bowden will be a guest today along with Tom Luginbill, Recruiting Analyst with Scouts.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I called Bob Riley and told him that if Hawthorne does not produce we will be owed a refund on his scholarship at the end of his decade tenure.

    ReplyDelete
  100. BOWDEN????!!!!

    NORTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL???!!!!

    I'M ALL OVER THAT.

    ReplyDelete
  101. OT, from someone who's been out of pocket for a couple of weeks:

Bama apologists are pimping a story that Mario Fannin is off the team, or soon will be. Any truth to that rumor?

    ReplyDelete
  102. stud muffin, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Fearless,

Nothing true that I have heard, thats almost as true as Bama hiring Jimmy Johns to head up their concession stand programs at the stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Ha,

Watch the sugar Jimmy puts in your coffee and the extra kick Kenny Stabler puts in your soft drinks.

    ReplyDelete
  105. True or not, was Fannin ever truly on the team except for the UGA game last year?

    ReplyDelete
  106. To be honest, I'm not expecting much from Mario this season. I will also be surprised if AC lives up to the hype.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I remember tons of people saying at the start of the season last year that if we ever got Burns and Fannin in the same backfield our offense would be amazing.

    Oh, it was amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Anonymous2:28 PM

    There is no hype.

    There is only pain.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Thanks, PDWT - I heard that one about the same time the news about the other players came out.

I think Fannin has at least one good season in him, if given enough opportunities. Hope he gets a chance to show it on the field this year.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I am hoping to see Fannin become a stable contributor. Last season I think he was more of a coin toss.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Anonymous2:41 PM

    What's the expectation though?

Auburn won't win the SEC or even the West.

Best to hope for is what? Shreveport?

    I hate settling for mediocrity.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Mediocrity would be a step in the right direction

    ReplyDelete
  113. Anonymous2:42 PM

But we had that with Tubs & Co.!!!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Anonymous2:42 PM

    This makes my head hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Snow you expect a 180 change in a few months???

    ReplyDelete
  116. I'm back to remaining cautiously optimistic .... until the next coach or player bio that is.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Mon, i'm trying to give this show another chance until Bowden comes on. absolutely brutal.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Anonymous2:50 PM

I can't speak for Snow, but I look forward to the day I can expect to win rather than hope to not lose.

However, this will take some time.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Yes, mediocrity is what is expected this season.

Yes, contending in the west every year is what we had with Tuberville.

But I wouldn't get all bent out of shape over the lower expectations this season. Yes, we are use to more, but a coaching change has it's price and there is definitely a chance we will exceed expectations. I expect our defense to be one of the best in the SEC.

As for offense, it is very true we need a savior at QB. I have actually not even been looking for that. At present we don't even have an average SEC QB. Hopefully Malzahn will surprise us.

Realistic expectations for this year are to have a winning season. If we can get into the top 3 in the west, I would call the season very successful.

The west will be tough this season, but I don't think we are as far behind talent wise as many think. I do think we have serious depth issues, primarily at linebacker and the offensive line. I can see us getting lucky on the offensive line and making it through the season okay, but the linebackers need more depth.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I blame HABOTN for my optimism. Normally, I generate my own AU optimism only to have it crushed by a mediocre if not downright disastrous season (a la '73, '75, '84, '03, '08). Given the extraneous source of my optimism this year, I'm hoping the results will be different.

    ReplyDelete
  121. remind me again, at what point were we contending last year?

Oh, never mind, I remember now. It was just before the opening kickoff.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Scottie - I'm cleaning up around my office so I'm listening-ish. I'll holla when it gets good. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  123. Anonymous3:20 PM

I hate to admit this among you all reasonable folks, but all I need to be happy in 2009 is six/seven Auburn wins and a few colassal Alabama losses.

Does that make me a lesser breed?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Be open and reserved. I am not making any predictions as none of us know. But I do know we have talent and we should be most of the teams on our schedule. If we would have not tripped ourselves up and if our offense would have helped our D at least some of the time, its a whole different year. I think the defense will be good not great and the season depends on our offense, again. :)

A fellow coach in Athlons etc magazine said about us, we have to run the ball, if we can get back to running the ball then it will take the pressure of the QB and we can go back to winning games. Run baby Run.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Interesting moment at the tennis court the other day...

I was playing with a buddy of mine and we were just minding our own business. I happened to be wearing a gray "Auburn Tennis" shirt, you can buy these at the bookstore for just about ANY sport.

A guy and his wife take the court next to us, both wearing Minnesota Golden Gophers paraphenalia

At some point the gentleman noticed my shirt and proceeded to exclaim the following: AUBURN! Boy you guys are in for one helluva season. *snicker, snicker*

I reply: Well, we're mostly optimistic, all things considered.

GG Guy: I can't imagine how you possibly can be.

    End of conversation.

    ReplyDelete

Mon....that term is used by Wifey in either affectionate or sarcastic manner to achieve her goals.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Interesting hearing that from a dude whose Alma Mater sucks and is also in a very overrated conference.

  128. THT, let's not forget to give '85 its due as far as disappointments go. Of course, we didn't really have our expectations crushed until our third game, when we went to UT and Tony Coke-head Robinson wore us out. The only thing that took that year beyond mediocre was Bo winning the Heisman.

a quick google search shows the Mighty Gophers and your 'hater' enjoyed a 1-11 season in 2007. however, they did follow that up with a 7-6 record in 2008. wow. a powerhouse.

Mindbomb's current article discusses varous aspects of Bama giving absolute authority to $aban. Why is he discussing that? Because that is what is happening.

How many years after absolute authority occurs before the Bammers regret it and melt down?

My guess is that if $aban doesn't get a MNC in the next 5 years...something will give.

    ReplyDelete
  136. i'm hoping 'something gives'.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Yes, Choc, but I didn't have great optimism or NC hopes in '85 like I did in '84. We were preseason #1 in '84, weren't we? And just like '03, we started off 0-2. That really stunk a big green one.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Oh shugah! That was hard. I was totally agreeing with you.

Macho, if you're new here please accept this as my official Welcome to the HABOTN.

Like my friend here says, ain't no thang.

    ReplyDelete
  145. True, THT, but we started '85 at #2, then went into the UT game #1. We also lost to unranked Bammer on the Tiffin field goal and got crushed in the Cotton Bowl by Texas A&M. I have always blamed the OC at the time (Jack Crowe) for '85 not being a huge year. We didn't have a very good QB, but we were loaded everywhere else. I guess that year really sticks with me because it was my freshman year at AU.

    ReplyDelete
  146. THT, the 1984 and 1985 Alabama losses were two of the more painful games I've watched Auburn play. The argument could be made that AU had the better team both seasons. Amazing how Dye turned things around after those years.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I've gotten in a bad habit of finding Monk reruns on various channels in the 1-2 a.m. time slot. I'm ready for this work day to be over.

  148. Anonymous3:46 PM

When $aban donated $1 mil for a "scholly" last season, I figgered he would be around more than just a few seasons.

We have been spoiled watching the Bammers self-implode every few years. This present situation may take longer to implode.

I know that there are a few folks that say a Bama-Banhammer is forthcoming. I'm hearing that it's not. Without regard to banhammers...let's be patient, build a team and beat the crap out of them.

  150. alright hotties, 8.5 hrs of work complete. i'm done. time to go herd the children.

    ReplyDelete
  151. 84 & 85 were disasters because we were never settled at QB. Pat Washington was one of the worst regular QB's in Auburn history and after him we completely changed our offense.

As far as 2009 goes, it's hard to have expectations when I have no clue what we really have at almost every position.

    ReplyDelete
  152. What really hurt about 84 and 85 aside from being #1 in both seasons and ending 9-4 and 8-5 were those losses to Alabama.

Had we not slipped up in those games against Alabama teams that weren't good we would have won 8 in a row over them.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Arrgh, RK, that makes it even worse. For some reason, I've never thought about that we would have had 8 in a row had we won those two.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Amazing on teams with Bo & Fullwood, even with Bo being injured half of 1984, that we struggled moving the ball because we couldn't get any production at QB.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Anonymous4:23 PM

Quarterback production, save a couple of years here and there, has been a problem at Auburn. I think it's because traditionally this is a defensive, run the ball type of team. That's not attractive to top flight QBs for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  156. The best indicator of how good we will be this season are two road games back to back, Tennessee and Arkansas. If we win both, I would say we are going to have a good season. More than likely we split and are about as expected. If we lose both, lets start talking recruiting.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Nice fallback plan there, Steve. That does look like a crucial stretch in the season.

    ReplyDelete
  158. 84 and 85 ... amazing to lose the game with the ball in the air on the last play of both games.

Dye -- who is my favorite all-time Auburn coach on many levels -- mangled the '84 game.

First, he should have kicked the chipshot FG for the lead and place the game in the hands of the defense. Secondly, if you go for it, you give the ball to Bo. Period.

85 was just an incredible game. If Benji Roland looks up, he clocks Al Bell on the reverse. If (name redacted) makes a tackle inbounds, ARGH!

Leigh's daddy made a heck of a kick. Tip your hat, shake their hands and walk away.

What did Dye do? His two coordinators -- probably two of the closest men to him on the face of the earth -- were dismissed.

    can you say NUT JOB!

    ReplyDelete
  160. Jet, Dye was always willing to make the hard choices necessary to move the program forward. Who would have thought after the 85 Bama game that AU was about to run off 4 in a row over The Evil Empire?

Did Mrs Kiffin make an appearance in her swimsuit today at the rafting creek?

    ReplyDelete
  161. Also, who would have expected after the blow out loss to A&M in the bowl game in 85 that we would move to a more pro-style offense in 1986.

    ReplyDelete
  162. You know, as much criticism as I have seen over last season, many of you will look back fondly upon it. I mean, could anything be more exciting than a 3-2 football game? Who will over forget the onsider punt against LSU? How can you live without the joy of hearing your OC describe how big of an idiot he is? Sure, we lost some games, but isn't it better to have a more considerate understanding offense that looks to fulfill the needs of both the defense and the offense, where everyone gets to play, and .... umm, wait a minute. Never mind.

    1. Stanford
    2. LSwho

If those were Mosely's criteria, why would UAT even be on the list.

Obviously at AU he considered depth chart quality not quantity.

    ReplyDelete
  181. THT, if those are his true priorities, the depth chart should be enough to send him to Auburn. Has Saban convinced these players that he can give playing time to 15 linebackers? I'll go out on a limb and say Stanford is a long-shot. I suspect Bama will be his final choice.

    ReplyDelete
  182. I sure hope he's not bama bound. That would nauseate me. Of course, anything that mentions bama produces nausea, at the very least.
