I should go by a lottery ticket, thats a first for me. Jay, I loved those books. Wish we could have used those books for this year, choose your future, change paths kinda thing.
j-z, the Voit football was the only choice if you really wanted some backyard football bruises. The ball often created as many as the other team. Catching one of those things when it was cold was like catching a pointy rock.
On another topic, my sister-in-law and family are moving from Texarkana to Atlanta this week. Needless to say, I can't get "Eastbound and Down" out of my head. Speaking of which, where's Buford been?
our pickup games were always full of broken bones. I think the P-SAT Bowl was the worst. That game featured a dislocated knee, a broken collar bone, and a broken wrist.
the only injuries I remember sustaining in our pickup games was a broken nose on one occasion, a broken cheekbone on another, and a severe ankle sprain. Nothing that required a cast.
Those broken bones were so annoying. They always seemed to happen when you actually had an even number of players on each team.
I actually managed to break my finger while playing a pick-up game at AU with a Nerf. I was playing QB and the guy rushing smashed his hand into my finger trying to swat the ball down after it was already gone. I remember sitting with my finger in a cup of ice watching "Life of Brian" at Haley (free movie there, for some reason).
There was a vacant lot next to my home, so it was the gathering place for many competitions of football, whiffle ball, kick ball, "Smear the Queer," "Goal-Line Stand" and many, many other games.
"Smear the Queer" was fun. Do kids play that these days and if so, what do they call it? I thought I saw some kids in my neighborhood playing it, but I'm not sure. We also used to play "500", where someone would throw the ball up and everyone else fought to catch it.
I'll take JGT's non-topic thread as an open invitation to go completely random.
Tis the season to select the next athletic venture for my seven year old boys: lacrosse, flag football, or baseball. Their father has deleted Soccer from the menu of options. The wife has washed her hands of the whole saga.
Since fall baseball is ultra non-competitive (and boring), they are quarrelling over the remaining choices. So, I told them that the HABOTN would resolve the dilemma. Their puzzled looks, and accompanying silence, was most welcome.
Apologies for the "Oprah moment." Any help in resolving this pressing issue of grave importance is appreciated.
We mostly played with the Voits and Nerfs until probably late junior high. At one point during that time, though, my grandfather gave me an awesome leather football that he had gotten autographed by Bud Wilkinson. I knew he had been the Oklahoma coach, but that didn't mean much to a young AU fan. Anyway, after staring at it for about a year, we finally decided to use it in the yard. I still kinda regret that.
Personally, I have seperated my shoulder and broken a rib playing "backyard" football. We used to play our games on the high school field. We'd get the field lined off and everything. We had an annual Thanksgiving game (The Turkey Bowl), that would draw crowds of spectators. Our largest attendance was about 150. We had jerseys made up, corporate sponsors and everything. I think it was even broadcast on a local radio station one year and there are video tapes of the games floating around somewhere.
The Alabama game is going to be killing me this year. For some reason a close relative decided that Thanksgiving would be the best time of the entire year to get married. Obviously, she has lost her mind.
Harrison, only possible if your friends are 10-11 years older than you, but I'm glad to know those games were still going strong at that time. I'll bet you had a better football, though!
MrsTHT promised to be at the IB without me, if such was the case. I, too, had to cash in a lot of chips to finagle that day off. I have no idea where we'll eat our "Thanksgiving Dinner" en route on Thursday.
I'm quite certain it won't be at a Pizza Hut, which was about the only place my dad, THTjr (a toddler), and I could find open in B'ham the last time the IB was on a Friday.
I'm sure there will be a waffle house open on the way ... might I suggest the double cheeseburger platter with the hash browns scattered, smothered and covered?
MrsTHT is friends with the UNC tennis coach and a former ass't women's coach. Those two are getting married on Sept 12. MrsTHT said I could go to the Miss St. game instead of the wedding. After 28 years, I've finally learned what she meant by that. I'll be at the wedding.
The agreement was Mrs. Jet had to graduate from college before we would wed. She graduated on Tuesday, I went to Nashvegas for an AU-Vandy hoops game on Wednesday (lost by 20), drove home Thursday, got married on Saturday -- missing an AU-Jackson State hoops game.
I have an employee who has been with me since I opened my business getting married on 9/19. I think it's even at night, same as the WVU game. She claims to be an Auburn fan, so I don't know what she was thinking.
Hash browns? I have no idea where they originated. Although I love hash browns (without onions, of course), I've always felt a bit of anger and suspicion towards them since they are usually on the plate where the grits should be.
Hash browns are usually consumed by me when I'm in areas of the country where grits are not served (or not served properly), or at Waffle House, where I usually get the burger because I never find myself there at breakfast time.
We used to play the "Mud Bowl" the day after Thanksgiving. HS football season was over at that point so we were allowed to do other things that you can't do during the season.
We did it for 3 years my soph-sr years of HS. The 1st year it had poured rain for a week, which is where it got its name. A brutal game where I think everyone weighed about 15 pounds more after the game due to the excess weight of the mud.
Can't go with the firing option - she's my best employee. Candlesticks are more likely. She's pretty tough, though. Maybe I could convince her to try out for LB at AU. I'm sure she'd move the wedding date for Eltoro.
The Halloween game is going to be hell for me. I plan on being there, but not being with the girls as they Trick or Treat will be tough. I'm hoping the neighborhood goes with a Friday night Trick or Treat, or heck, maybe bring them to Auburn.
Labor Day Bowl Pre-SAT Bowl SAT Bowl Turkey Bowl Christmas Bowl New Year's Bowl (insert inclement weather) Bowl
those are all great memories. I still have a Turkey Bowl MVP certificate I received from the Commissioner (he was the one whose knee was dislocated)
When we lived in Pittsburgh I took the kids to the high school field after a huge rain and we played football. Well THTjr and I played football. MissTHT (who was 3) just laid in the puddles of water and rolled around. MrsTHT would not let us back in until we had removed our clothes.
Mrs. Leader is a huge tiger fan... the bad part it she is an LSU tiger... I get hit from all directions...
And to answer everyone’s questions... Mrs. Leader wears the pants... where have you all been.... HAVE YOU LOOKED AT MY AVATAR? DO YOU SEE PANTS? Never had em never will… nuf said...
We also used to do the annual Toy Bowl with the radio station that I worked with.
It was a flag game between local radio and TV people with some ringers to raise money for Toys for Tots. Fun times.
I also played in a game to benefit Chattanooga's homeless that Frank Wycheck of the Titans was supposed to be one of the coaches. He showed up for one practice and at game time he was there, then this blonde showed up and he disappeared never to be seen again.
j-z, she would probably prefer to crush my skull for not attending vs. getting the nicer present. That said, she's getting the nice present and I will wear a helmet to work on Monday, 9/21.
Here's the deal... I need the opinions of the world-renowned Hotties.
They are starting an adult kickball league in Montgomery. (That's right, adult's can play kickball too.) I actually think, much like golf, it's an excuse to get out, drink some beer, and hang out with friends - while calling it a sport. But, it has rules and has a winner so I'm in.
I need to come up with a team name. Any ideas???
Also, Scotty B, think you could work me something up for jerseys once we pick a team name?
When my oldest son was in middle school, he was having difficulty with a very demanding IB (International Baccalaureate) cirriculum. I in turn was in a new job that took a great deal of overtime to fix what the previous manager screwed up.
On a late Saturday afternoon as I drove home from an 'extra' day at work, my third in the month, I decided to toss the football with my son to relieve our mutual pressure.
After we threw it back and forth a few times he jammed his finger on a catch and we sat out looking at the sunset for a while.
I then started in on a heartfelt father-son talk on what he was up against and how I was proud of him whether he wanted to continue or not.
After listening patiently, my son turned to me and said, "Dad, I really appreciate this, and don't want to ruin this moment for all the world,... but I think you just broke my finger...."
Sure enough, the X-ray confirmed it.
It's been ten years, but the story comes up every football season, with embellishments.
wow, first?
ReplyDeleteecotoursim - an oxymoron?
ReplyDeleteI should go by a lottery ticket, thats a first for me. Jay, I loved those books. Wish we could have used those books for this year, choose your future, change paths kinda thing.
ReplyDeleteI read the heck out of those books in 4th/5th grade.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how on earth you find all the appropriate images for your threads
ReplyDeletei've never read the heck out of anything.... except HABOTN.
ReplyDeleteHI all.. had PC issues yesterday.. I was stuck in Charleston due to weather in ATL. Saw Big Ed Orgeron inthe airport.... looks bigger on TV.....
ReplyDeleteI do not see many famous people..so it was cool.
BTW well done patdyeswildturkey

Glad you're home safe & sound, DL.. and back on line. Orgeron ripping his shirt off doesn't have anything on you in your little towel.
ReplyDeleteThe Voit ... the choice of YMCA football leagues ... man those things were like trying to catch bricks.
ReplyDeleteI actually broke a finger trying to catch a Voit. Of course, I have hands like skillets, but I blame the football. That's how I roll.

ReplyDelete"Smear the Queer" was fun. Do kids play that these days and if so, what do they call it? I thought I saw some kids in my neighborhood playing it, but I'm not sure. We also used to play "500", where someone would throw the ball up and everyone else fought to catch it.
ReplyDeleteWe always played with the Auburn football AU Trainer Kenny Howard gave me when I was a young lad.
ReplyDeleteI think they call it "Group Hug the Practitioner of an Alternative Lifestyle"

Unless y'all are full-blooded Native Americans, go with football.
ReplyDeleteYes, football is full of contact, but something about lacrosse just looks "mean" every time I watch it.
...and hope JayGT doesn't banhammer you for deleting Soccer as an option.

I really miss those days.
Lacrosse for 7 year olds?!?! That sounds awesome
ReplyDeletescott- did you grow up with my friends, because we played those same games all the time
ReplyDeleteOn a somewhat related topic of family and football...
ReplyDeleteIs anyone else having issues getting paroled for the Ole Piss and Iron Bowl considering they are on Halloween and Thanksgiving (close).
Basically the two big games at home and I am having to cash in massive amounts of chips to pull this off…
You owe it to the very fabric of the American Existence to choose football.
ReplyDeleteThe Alabama game is going to be killing me this year. For some reason a close relative decided that Thanksgiving would be the best time of the entire year to get married. Obviously, she has lost her mind.
ReplyDeleteDL you should have married a football freak.
ReplyDeleteDL, I guess you're not the "L" I thought you were. You can't assert your authority and get this done.
ReplyDeleteDang, look how times have changed in Pyongyang.
Kim Jong is Ill.
Harrison, only possible if your friends are 10-11 years older than you, but I'm glad to know those games were still going strong at that time. I'll bet you had a better football, though!
ReplyDeleteDL obviously doesn't wear the pants in his family.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with people getting married during football season?? I may have to miss the opener vs LaTech to attend a wedding.
ReplyDeletei am going to have to fight to get off work for the Iron Bowl. stupid people and time with their families is getting in the way

ReplyDeleteTHT ...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there will be a waffle house open on the way ... might I suggest the double cheeseburger platter with the hash browns scattered, smothered and covered?
My current wife gave me the incredulous look when I told her that we can't get married in the fall. She didn't understand. We got married in March.
ReplyDeletethe end
and from the looks of it none of you wives read the HABOTN
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was getting at, THT. I don't think wearing the small towel is the same thing.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm talkin' 'bout,
ReplyDeleteTommyD!
fall was out for us too, she understood
ReplyDeleteMrs. Jet's birthday is the Monday after the Arkansas game, which would lend her to think that weekend will be her birthday celebration.
ReplyDeleteI informed her that I will not be in town for the pre-b'day weekend as I have been invited to attend the game and will do so.
Good news: The cast should be off in time for me to enjoy the game!
MrsTHT is friends with the UNC tennis coach and a former ass't women's coach. Those two are getting married on Sept 12. MrsTHT said I could go to the Miss St. game instead of the wedding. After 28 years, I've finally learned what she meant by that. I'll be at the wedding.

ReplyDeleteFire her now.

ReplyDeleteTHT ... agreed.
