Really?

Look who is on the front of this year's SEC-branded version of Sports Illustrated's preseason magazine:

Is there a more overrated coach in America?

This site here looks at the rankings made by the "major" pre-season magazines. They combine to pick Ole Miss NINTH. In the country.

Saddle up, Auburn fans. Prepare to be a (relieved) spectator for Auburn 2003 happening to another team.

  4. Nice radio appearance this morning, Jay G. In fact, I think it can be found in the middle of hour 2, here:

  5. I've been out all morning, and now I'm about to leave for a conference in Mississippi.

I'll be glad to share all who can hear my opinion that the even without the SI Jinx, Ole Miss looks like a team that will crash and burn.

It's what Nutt does. It's who he is.

  6. yup. Ole Miss is gonna choke-choke-choke.

well, that said, look at their schedule:
    Sep. 6 at Memphis
    Sep. 19 SE Lousiana
    Sep. 24 at South Carolina
    Oct. 3 at Vanderbilt
    Oct. 10 Alabama
    Oct. 17 UAB
    Oct. 24 Arkansas
    Oct. 31 at Auburn
    Nov. 7 Northern Arizona
    Nov. 14 Tennessee
    Nov. 21 LSU
    Nov. 28 at Miss. State

    hmmm....if they can split USC/BAMA/ARK/AU/UT/LSU, that's 9-3, right? maybe they can....NNNNNAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

  7. JayGT- you may be spot on re: 2003 comparison.

  8. While I agree that Ole Miss will be overrated this year. I do not believe Nutt is an overrated coach

  9. Ole Miss will definitely be feeling the heat and I don't like their chances to survive the pressure. Watchout for LSU, they are the team to beat in the West IMO.

  10. I feel slimy just looking at his picture on the cover.

  11. I haven't seen Sporting News put them at # 1 like they did us in 2003, so they haven't received the complete kiss of death.

  13. We need a Steve update. I haven't heard from him in awhile. This seems like the longest stretch of no Steve. It's kind of like when you pawn your kids off to your parents and you have that awkard silence that you are not used to and you actually kind of miss the chatter. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. j-z- he does look creepy on that cover, like he's trying to pick up a 19 year old college student

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'll see if I can get Steve here...

Tommy Tuberville...bad final couple of recruiting classes...Auburn had been sliding since the undefeated 2004 season... a change was needed...it won't take 5 years to recover.

Those phrases usually trigger Steve to the HABOTN.

  16. Is that the voice of experience, Harrison?

    ReplyDelete
  17. my guess is Sports Illustrated needed someone else on the cover besides Tebow. he was on 4 SI covers last season.

    ReplyDelete
  18. More overrated? Hmmm... maybe Les Miles? He certainly hasn't approached the mythic level of overratedness that Charlie Weis experienced a few years back.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks RK- I think you sent the Bat Signal. Tuberville was great, but according to him we are 5 classes away from Tuberville Glory :)!

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one Jay...I'm not saying Ole Miss is going to the show, but they'll be 2nd or third in the West, which for them is very good.

Orgeron was a joke of a head coach, but he sure could recruit. They've got some decent players, and a deep bench. If they can stick around for 3 quarters, they can beat anybody in the SEC.

2010 is when the inevitable Houston Nutt flop will occur.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I tend to agree with Jason. I don't think they will finish top 10 in the nation, but I'll buy top 20. 2010 is when doors open at the Nutt house. It will take him that long to find a new girlfriend.

  22. Interesting Subject, Top 5 Over-rated Current Coaches:

    1. Les Miles- LSU
    2. Dan Hawkins- Colorado
    3. Steve Spurrier- USC
    4. Kirk Ferentz- Iowa
    5. Rich Rodriguez- Michigan (he's questionable on the list)

Charlie Weis is not over-rated anymore, he is most likely to lose his job.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't think Les Miles is that overrated. Unless things change, he's kept LSU at the same level that Nick Saban left it, which is among the top 10 teams in the nation and top 2 or 3 in the SEC.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree.....Ole Myth...Crash....Burn

    ReplyDelete
  25. Don't get me wrong, Miles is crazy and never leaves without his horseshoe, but until it's proven otherwise, that guy is a very good coach.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Rk- I fall in the "Very Lucky" coach catagory when I look at Miles. Yes, Miles has been able to continue to get good talent at LSU, but he really depends on his coordinators to cover up his flaws. Unfortunately, his DC last year couldn't do that, but he made a change to the solid Chavis. I think Les can hurt his team almost as much as the star player of the other team, but he has just been very lucky in his gambles.

  27. and he continues to wear that tiny hat

  28. I respectfully disagree with Harrison. While I believe Nutt is a motivator, that is where his coaching brilliance stops. He makes poor decisions in regards to crucial times in ball games down the stretch when it is time to win a close ball game. He definitely does not believe in the law of averages because he is constantly all in when it is obvious that the opposing team has the cards. I can't say that he is a good preparation coach either in terms of strategy. Nutt seems to be really good at winning with other people's players.

He is the Tubby Smith of college football.

  29. Eddie,

I still say Miles is a very good coach, insane, but very good. If he continues on the path he's been on will it matter how lucky he has been? Eventually people will just see him as a winner.

If the Chizik thing doesn't work out, I'd gladly by Lester the Hat a kids sized Auburn hat and let him coach on our sidelines.

  30. Nutt is a 8 win coach. He'll always hover around that area with a season or two of 6 wins and a season or two of 10 wins. Never spectacular, never horrible.

    Reminds me of someone else.

  31. Gannett stock up 28% today.

    ReplyDelete
  32. who am i to argue with a coaching legend such as Mr Crum.

    ReplyDelete
  33. RK- I agree that Les is a good coach and a good recruiter, I just am still mixed to whether he is a top tier coach like some think, but if we wins big like he is capable of doing, then he very well may be a top tier coach.

  34. Eddie,

So what's the topic of the show tonight going to be?

I probably won't be able to listen live, but I'll check it out tomorrow.

  35. Gannett stock -- maybe layoffs are the key to a healthy company.

  36. Exactly Harrison, I didn't win two national championships, go to 6 final fours, and make it to the College Basketball Hall of Fame by making Houston Nutt type decisions. You have got to play the odds and go with the numbers to win consistently, pure and simple.

    Excellent point.

  38. It's funny how varied opinions are on coaches.

I've never understood the knock against Nutt. He's a decent, but not spectacular, coach.

I've seen LSU win a lot of games in spite of Miles. He's a borderline retard with really good football players.

    ReplyDelete
  39. To me, Miles appears to be a more of a nut than Nutt.

  40. "He's a borderline retard with really good football players."

Made me laugh and nod in agreement!

  41. I did most of my growing up about 30 miles from Oxford. They are an insecure bunch that wants to win soooo bad. 'Pressure' is a jaded term, but it genuinely applies here.

It won't be catastrophic, but there will be some disappointed Rebels come the end of the year.

With that said, I hope they kick Bama in the teeth.

    Give 'em hell, Nutt

  43. I almost jumped off a bridge when I heard we might get Nutt for our head coach during the search last year. Of course, I actually did jump off when I found out it as Chizik (it was a small bridge, I only had minor injuries)

  45. Yesterday I won 4 VIP tickets to the Porsche 250 this weekend here in B'ham. I can't go and just listed them on Craig's list.
These tickets include everything for all three days of the event: admission, suite access, food, beer, wine, programs, primo parking, etc.
Major, major discount for any Hottie who would like to take them off my hands. Just e-mail me if interested.

JGT, if it's not acceptable to put this on here, I'll be glad to remove it. I'm certainly not in the ticket business. It's a pretty sweet set-up for somebody, though, and thought I'd give priority to the Hotties.

  46. Scott I just sent you an email.

  47. I would worry more about the way Nutt self-destructed at Arkansas than I would his coaching. His teams have sure put some ugly whippings on Auburn over the last several years. I never looked forward to seeing Nutt on the sidelines. In fairness, he has looked bad in several games as well. He seems to be a big hit or a big miss.
