Steve Renfroe is back in baseball

Hey everyone. One of the most complicated men every to wear an Auburn uniform, former baseball coach Steve Renfroe, has landed in the world of (top-level) high school baseball.

He will coach at Briarwood Christian, which has an outstanding baseball program. Renfroe took over for Lee Hall, the former UAB assistant, who left to spend more time with his family.

First off, Hall is one of the 10 best coaches I've ever seen. I hope he resurfaces around here soon.

As for Renfroe, he is a very good man who is very bad at managing scrutiny. I enjoyed so many swell conversations with him during his tenure under Hal Baird. Once Renfroe became the figurehead after the 2000 season, though, he slowly became a completely different person. He seemed unhappy, paranoid, argumentative and miserable.

That affected his relationship with the players and everything fell apart. He was fired after the 2004 season and has been out of the spotlight since then.

I hope Renfroe finds Briarwood more to his liking. The guy can coach.

  1. impeccable timing i must say. not much substance, though.

  2. i spent the entire '99 season with AU baseball. i really liked Coach Renfroe. i was sad it didn't work out for him. hope all is well at Briarwood.

  3. if a new thread appears, and no one else is around to post with you, did the thread really happen?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Scottie, did you ever read what Jet said about having 4 posts in a row?

    ReplyDelete
  5. We're just catchin up scottie b

    ReplyDelete
  6. Do we still have a baseball program, or is it just a pretty park?

    ReplyDelete
  7. auburn baseball has me very depressed

    ReplyDelete
  8. Barn sucks at baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Maybe Slater can coach third base for him.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Plainsman Park used to be a ton of fun back with Gilleimo, Gross, Faulkner, Dunn, Rich, Bootcheck, and Colter Bean. good times. we won the Super Regional at home in '99 then traveled down to Tallahassee for the Super Regional. that was ugly. we got beat something like 15-2 and 12-1.

    ReplyDelete
  11. THE Barn...excuse me.

    ReplyDelete
  12. One of the most complicated men every<--- typo.

Why is he complicated to wear a uniform? are his appendages twisted like a pretzel or something?

    ReplyDelete
  13. We really do need to step it up in baseball. Maybe this new guy has the answer.

    ReplyDelete
  14. well, i understand the complicated in a uniform thing. Renfroe had back trouble from a playing injury many years ago. he spent as much time in the training room as a lot of the players. he was a bit odd at times but a really nice guy.

    ReplyDelete
  15. C'mon guys, I was being self-deprecating...it's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. Apparently I deserve a big FAIL.

    ReplyDelete
  16. What is Steve Renroe's hometown? Anyone know?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sean, since the beginning of the semester you've been on Double Secret Probation.

    ReplyDelete
  18. sorry, i had to.

wow, look at the set on Aeronaut.

    ReplyDelete
  19. APB out on one DL, Asian head, caucasian torso, likely unclothed, perhaps intoxicated. His presence is missed in HABOTNland.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wow, didn't even notice the avatar change, I seriously got one-upped there.

    ReplyDelete
  21. May I say I'm udderly impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Aero's got it workin'!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. This is a huge pickup for Briarwood and I am very glad to see him in that spot.

I attempted to walk onto the AU baseball team back in the day and I came away very impressed with Coach Renfroe. He was very enthusiastic and knew everyone's name in 5 minutes despite the fact that most of us were wasting his time. It killed me to see him go out the way he did.

  24. Wow, Finebaum is really on his game today. Stating that Florida fans are arrogant and that bama fans can be arrogant, but they have a right to be. Florida is the new kid on the block...blah, blah, blah. Just tell me how he is even remotely neutral anymore? He is getting worse with age.

  25. i have decided to forgo most talk radio now with 3 exceptions, 1)HABOTN Radio, 2)The Auburn Football Insider, and 3)Inside the Auburn Tigers Radio (archives). that is all.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anonymous2:32 PM

The HABOTN just rang up around 600 posts in a 24 hour period and practice hasn't even started. I'm wonderin' if it'll start to resemble a permanent campfire as soon as football starts. THT and Aero will still have to cover the late/early hours.

For a frame of reference, check out the archives from July 28-Aug 3, 08. There were around 10-30 posts per 24 hours. Also check out JGT's perceptions/predictions at that preseason juncture. There are some very prophetic statements and some way off the mark.

Sports predictions are never fully right and rarely even close.

SteveFC has that issue covered, b/c he has predicted every possible QB scenerio outcome.

  27. I've started going to bed around midnight, but I'll do what must be done ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like your play list scottie. I'll have to just try and not be so addicted to other sports talk radio while i'm working.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nothing happening today. Wish it was but may be a washout for now. Still in the lead, but no news to report.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What ya' got Eddie? I'm hearinf nothing is happeneing today.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not a thing is going to happen and i'm not sure when the next good news will be. For perception sakes, if this staff has a big time commitment up its sleeve, it needs to have it go public.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 8 more hours of work and I'm already getting sleepy.

Aha! I'll go get me another DC!!!
Non-existent news becoming existent would also tend to wake me up.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Man.. wtc

That lighting makes your arm muscle looks like a wee-wee when you are scrolling up / down.

Could you hold your arm at some other angle and take a pic?

we've been quiet about it for the last 48 odd hours but this thing is in our face, man.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'll see what i can do abou that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. How is that for you guys?

    ReplyDelete
  36. WTC you change that avatar and you I are finished.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Get over it, Aero. If the chicks here can look and watch y'all make fools of yourselves over half a boob I think the guys can deal with a little optical illusion.

    ReplyDelete
  38. WTC ...

Don't worry ... she'll come back to you ... she likes you best.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I had a fatherhood tear in my eye moment today. I went home for lunch today and my 6 year old boy walks up to me, gives me a hug, and says, "You know what Dad? Alabama sucks." My wife looked at me and wanted to know when I was going to tell him that we don't talk that way. She's on restriction for a week.

    I f-in' hate you bama.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Who else failed to qualify from the 2009 class?

Please let it not be Taikwon Page or Coleman.

  41. Nicely done, j-z jr

    ReplyDelete
  42. j-z

I'll pay cash money for the kid. Name your price!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. straight cash money homey.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Almost quitting time around here. Way too much to do around the house after the workout but I'll squeeze by later on this evening.

    ReplyDelete
  45. J-Z ...

And people worry about the future of America! They shouldn't when they look in the eyes and listen to the words of our youth.

They hate UAT as much as we do!

    God bless America.

    ReplyDelete
  46. let down and heart broken once again by a habotn boy

    ReplyDelete
  47. The other avatar my be for after the kiddies go to bed.

    ReplyDelete
  48. wtc = Thread Killer

    ReplyDelete
  49. J-Z ...

No, I think Steve Renfroe killed this thread like he killed Auburn baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Can someone answer this: do I need to order ESPNU, or will I get ESPNU SEC games on a local channel?

    ReplyDelete
  51. SOMEONE TELL ME! THIS IS PUPPET HOUR! ANSWER ME!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think you have to buy ESPNU...not the channel, but the entire network.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't even know if we get ESPNU, much less what games will be on it. That is a homework assignment for my summer vacation week in August.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Michael ...

I think this is the way it works ... the 11:21 ESPNU game will be syndicated into local markets the way Raycom was ... go check the archive from the SEC media days because it a list of many of the local markets.

The night ESPNU games, I believe, have to be viewed on ESPNU. The games will be in HD, but the HD availability depends on your provider.

In the Gump, ESPNU is not in HD. Boooo!

    ReplyDelete
  55. You should order it Mikhail. I don't have thay option. Comcast doesn't carry it at all in my area. How do you just not have it available, but 50 miles up the road, there it is. Ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  56. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  57. ESPN regional network stations here

    ReplyDelete
  58. PF - same way I have ZERO access to SportSouth :-(

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have to buy the whole stupid sports package for ESPNU... I think I will just go to my friends house who has it to watch those games. Effin ESPNU.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have to go to the basement for ESPNU and ESPN Classic; they are "digital variety" channels, i.e. >100, so I can only access them in the basement where we have the cable box. Of course, it's a moot point if I don't get a functioning TV down there.

    ReplyDelete
  61. is it still puppet hour? can I get a puppet to go? I'm starving and they won't give me a chance to go find food.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anonymous5:13 PM

THT, sounds like its time to start looking at TVs again.

    ReplyDelete
  63. NoVa - the one I want is rumored to hit the shelves Aug 16. HomeTheaterStore.com lists it as in stock, so I ordered. Since no one else had it in stock, I called to verify. They don't have it, but they did try to sell me another model. Losers. I obviously canceled that order.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous6:16 PM

Puppets are too stringy to be good eating.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Anonymous6:19 PM

Since no one else is around, I'll revive a topic from a couple of days ago.

No beverage with the words light or lite in the name deserves to be called beer.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm around... work keeps getting in the way.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anonymous6:38 PM

Since you're around, I'll continue on my beer topic.

Yuengling is drinkable, I don't cook with anything I won't drink, but that's what I use to boil the bratwurst.

I love a good stout. Real Guinness (not the stuff you can get here) is nectar.

    ReplyDelete
  68. or course, the only beer I drink is root beer.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I wouldn't know a yuengling from a yingyang

    ReplyDelete
  70. Beer is good.

    Auburn is great

    Bammer sucks

Country music is all I listen to

    ReplyDelete
  71. WOW too fast on the trigger.
    Double take

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous7:23 PM

    This is true, Bama Sucks!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Sweetwater replaces bottle for bottle of skunk or expired beer (they don't pasturize. so the shelf life is limited).

    ReplyDelete
  74. Anonymous8:09 PM

The only Sweetwater I know is a local chain of microbrewery/restaurant and they don't bottle their beer. It's good. It has the Omnica seal of approval.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Remember when generics were so popular and you could get generic beer - white can with black lettering?

    ReplyDelete
  76. still slogging away here at work. where are all the "usual suspects" tonight?

No telling where Cincy is in her new wheels. She's probably enjoying the open road somewhere with her iTunes blaring.

    ReplyDelete
  77. well scratch my back with a hack saw!

    hey cincy; how's the car?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I remember when Coors had to be smuggled in your suitcase flying home from ski trips in Colorado.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yeah, the Sweetwater I know is better, and they bottle their beer. It pretty much rules.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Anonymous8:14 PM

And she's looking for generic beer!

I admit I'm a beer snob. I don't drink much or often and when I do, I want something good.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Anonymous8:15 PM

The Sweetwater I know also has excellent grilled salmon and chicken.

    ReplyDelete
  82. hmmmmm.....I'm still going with the Sweetwater I know as being better, but I bet it would be nice with some good Salmon.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Good evening, HOTTICRATS and HOTLICANS.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I don't like ANY beer, but I do remember friends who tried the generic beer. I think it was pretty rough. I just remember how funny the can looked - all it said was "Beer".

THT, the wheels are great!! I am currently updating my ipod with new music to have in the car. I have too many choices now - regular radio, ipod or satellite radio. It's fine.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Anyone every had drunk chicken?? Apparently it's a dish were the chicken is cooked with a can of beer inside it? Tell me the guy or gal that created this dish didnt already have one too many.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Choices are the enemy of my decision making. My ipod stays on shuffle so I don't have to worry myself with what I want to hear. I am getting sattelite radio before the fall, though. Sounds sweet, cincy.

Generic beer sounds awesome (or awful).

I'm thinking of switching my bachelor party from Vegas to New Orleans so I can go to the LSU game. Any thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  87. The Transporter 2 is on FX ... one of Jason Statham's finer performances.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Hello everybody...Once again I am watching the braves BLOW IT!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. bought AU-Tn Tixs today...HOtel is booked...ready to have a good time in knoxvegas

    ReplyDelete
  90. Beer can chicken rules....I worry about anything cooked with aluminum, though, after reading a study closely correlating aluminum content and alzheimers in men.

    ReplyDelete
  91. PF ... What happens with Corndogs stays with Corndogs.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Any news on Dyer? Dad called me today and Longshore was running his mouth in MOntgomery about how Auburn fans were giddy about some big commitment coming

    ReplyDelete
  93. I've never been to a bachelor party. I'll be in BTR for LSU game. Don't bother inviting me...MrsTHT says NO!

Someone just asked me to work weekend of Ball State instead of my assigned weekend of the UT game. I knew I should have ordered tickets to that one.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Empire Tickets THT....Good seats in UT for 115 a piece.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I say good...YOu know Decent Seats. I got lower level end zone.

    DAMN BRAVES!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. I don't like beer, but I love me some beer can chicken. I rub the chicken with Lysanders meat rub and use a "yeasty" (is that a word?) beer. MMMMM!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Don't the Braves just pull your heart out and stomp on it?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Kotchman has had a good night, though

    ReplyDelete
  99. Anonymous8:46 PM

I'm still looking for people to share a condo in Sevierville and a ticket for UT.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I shared a meal @ Sweetwater with Nova and the beer and salmon was absolutely delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Kotchman I think was a good trade for tex last year..I mean you werent going to keep tex around so Casey nice pick up. NOt one error while with the braves

    ReplyDelete
  102. "yeasty" beer sounds scary. I think I would modify the recipe to include the following:

apply yogurt. It contains helpful bacteria (live cultures, including acidophilus and bifidus) that destroy yeast. It also works when applied topically. Insert some into the [chicken] using a finger or plastic tampon applicator. Use only plain yogurt with active cultures

    ReplyDelete
  103. Mon are you still livin in WV

    ReplyDelete
  104. Anonymous8:59 PM

THT, keep your hands and or applicator away from my chicken!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yes, ATL. We plan to try to move spring/summer of next year.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Told you, Monica.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Anonymous9:31 PM

wtc....that avatar resembles a shaved, dead chicken.

Mon likes it...so I guess it's got that going for it.

    ReplyDelete
  108. atl,
where did you buy the AU/TN tix, and how much were they?

On the sweetwater debate... if the Sweetwater beer you're talking about is the IPA, I saw it in bottles tonight at the local Publix...

Can some of you beer peeps give me a review of Abita amber beer? Give me a mainstream beer that it would compare to....
Is there a microbrew or high gravity beer that would be comparable to a killians?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Yall must have worn yourselves out last night! Pretty quiet in here tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  110. cincy ... it is quite quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Looks like no news for the week on the recruiting end.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Ok so where are the peeps screaming about the Braves, they won!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. The week isn't over, I think we'll end it on a good note. I'm referring to 'cruitin'.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Maybe so, just thought something would happen today. I hear Dyer is tired of it all and thought he would commit. According to everything you read, AU is WAY ahead and woudl have to do something dumb to lose him. It would just be a boost to get a big name in the fold as we move toward practice.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Things seem quiet on the Auburn front, a little too quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  116. This comment has been removed by the author.
