Post-practice reaction, 8/6

Hey everyone. I didn't hear a lot of interesting stuff tonight. It happens.

Here's a roundup:
  • WR DeAngelo Benton and CB Demond Washington spent the entire practice on the field today. You know how the team has been splitting into two groups -- one on the field and one in the weight room? Not for those two. Gene Chizik said he's just trying to give assistant coaches more time to assess those two guys.

  • OL Aubrey Phillips confirmed that his friend (and Auburn signee) Daren Bates has been cleared by the NCAA. Bates is supposed to begin his college career tomorrow.

  • Auburn moves to "shells" (shoulder pads and helmets) for practice tomorrow. Chizik didn't seem dead-set on getting his team into full pads ASAP. ``We'll just wait and play it by ear and see what the health of our team is," he said.

  • LB Joshua Bynes on fellow LB Eltoro Freeman, who now is working with the No. 1 defense at weak-side linebacker: ``He’s still about the same to me. He’s still the type of guy who doesn’t like to mess up. He likes to be perfect. He’s still fast. He’s electrifying to watch and every drill he does, he likes to be full speed."

  • Bynes had some not-so-nice things to say about former defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads' defensive approach. Rhoads now is head coach at Iowa State. I hear that's a plum job; a place for winners.

Anyway, here's how Bynes described the difference between Rhoads and current Auburn defensive czar Ted Roof: ``Roof is the type of guy who will let us go full speed. If you miss, at least you miss full speed. Rhoads was the type who wanted us to break down and make sure we make the proper tackle."

  1. Demond Washington is going to be very important in terms of depth. I am looking forward to seeing him play. He has star potential.

  8. There's a chance that THT could be espousing the virtues of #21 in the coming decades. I sure hope so.

Hitting or missing tackles at full speed embodies Auburn football. I am a Roof philosophy proponent.

I'm not completely sure I like Bynes comment about Rhodes. I distinctly remember Bynes attempting to throw down John Parker during the Iron Bowl last year, and in his fit of intensity start celebrating while in the meantime JPW didn't go down and completed a long pass on what should've been a huge loss.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It's hard to not call him Ted Roof Rusted all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. KMo:

The former coaches are always the first ones to be thrown under the bus. I thought Auburn had a good defense last year. The offensive ineptitude wore them down as the year went on.

    ReplyDelete
  12. As long as they are wrapping up and tackling at full speed, then I'm fine with it...if all they are doing is throwing a shoulder into someone and bouncing off of them at full speed, then there is a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Rhoads was a very good coach. Different philosophies doesn't mean one if right and one is wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  14. KMo makes a good point. Our linebacker bouncing off JPW was very embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Chizik's DB philosophy was a bit different than Boom's. Boom had his DBs in tight coverage and occasionally gave up big plays. Chiz was more about making them pay for touching the ball. Both philosophies worked.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I would remove the "very" and say Rhodes was a good coach.

Occasionally you have to blitz, and he never seemed to want to do that.

Fundamentally he was very strong, we didn't miss tackles until late in the season when the D was just too tired to care.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd take Chiz coaching the secondary and Boom coaching the front 7.

That would be the perfect combo.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I preferred Chizik as a DC, but Muschamp was definitely a great one too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I acknowledge Muschamp's coaching ability. His sideline personality was obscene and unacceptable to me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Evening hotsters:

I kind of liked Muschamp's intensity on the sideline, although I didn't care for an AU coach launching f-bombs for ESPN mikes to pick up.

I did not like his philosophy of allowing the deep ball to kill us....a lot. He also had a tendency to forget that it was a bad thing for UGA to score points. Other than that he was great.

Everyone needs to go there once. Not a place I will be eager to go back to.

  22. after reviewing the videos for the day, it seems quite obvious to me that Caudle has much better technique than Burns. Now if he can throw the ball to his own receivers. Did anyone listen to the audio in the clips. Coaches were telling the QB to lead the WR's more. Burns threw behind a couple of guys and jsut seems to have trouble throwing the ball. almost like he is forcing it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. JayGT - I sure hope you're home in bed by now. But thanks for all the news, pics, & vids

I just finished running the audio from yesterday's video through the filter. Finally figured out what that was I heard:

Malzahn: Alright Kodi, now throw the quick out to Tate....................no no NO.....BEN Tate!

  24. I still am in Auburn.

  25. I think Rhoads was the perfect medicine for the D last year. They had gotten sloppy and undisciplined in many ways the couple of years before (though still quite impressive most of the time). It may not have been a fun way to be coached, but I think using the right technique and being disciplined in practice pays off in the game.

That being said, it can also be a good thing to have a looser coach follow a tighter coach. Much like republicans and democrats rotating in power, it is a good thing to have things run from a different point of view from time to time.

    ReplyDelete
  26. another late nite for JGT. thanks bubba.

    ReplyDelete
  27. holy cow. I think CGC needs to rethink these evening practices and late nights. We've got All-American talent, but not much depth behind Writer Tate. We need to keep him fresh for the season!

  28. I have another video ready.

It will debut tomorrow morning ... 9ish CDT.

  29. I have departing now.

See you all in the morning.

  30. republicans & dems? different point of view? They're all just crooks from my perspective. They both steal from me, the only difference is the dems at least tell me they're going to do it.

  31. Just left campus a few minutes ago. My wife's cousin will start her AU career in a few days. Her parents moved her into the new Village apartments... then drove home to Tuscaloosa. LOL The pain and agony on their faces as their eldest child settled into her new Orange and Blue life was priceless! I love family reunions!

Hate Bama ... flush the floaters!

  32. I thought Caudle's mechanics looked better than Kodi's, but I'm an idiot. Maybe we'll get to see a few passes from Todd soon.

Here's my vote for tomorrow's intro music. Not the original, but tasty nonetheless.

  35. wtc, we took our daughter to the Melting Pot in Hsv for her 20th birthday last month. We just ordered the cheese and chocolate fondues. That chocolate was good stuff! Not a place I would visit often, but we did enjoy the experience.

  36. LOL Thanks Mon! I think it was just the fact that I spent about an hour escorting bama lovin, Auburn hatin' kin folks around my beloved campus and they couldnt even appreciate the fact that they were standing on hallowed ground. lol But I still love em like in-laws.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It was good, but as you said not a place I will go often, if again. We ordered the cheese the meat and the desert. About 33 per head. A bit pricey for girls that do nto eat very much. had LOTS of leftovers so I've got that going for me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Mon-How are you? Been out of town working and only get to lurk with very few posts this week.

  39. The Melting Pot is code for "place where your money disappears". Not a big fan of fondue but I get outvoted 3-1 by my peeps so I just grin and bear it.

  44. I've been to the Melting Pot in Nashville. I concur with WTC's opinion.

I'm so jealous of all you folks getting tickets and making multiple game attendance plans!

  49. 'Mornin All!!

Just watched the clip from yesterday. It looked to me that Neil has the Much easier throwing motion and mechanics - it looks effortless. Kodi looks to me as he is working to throw the ball - lots of extra movement in his throw. The little on the tape seemed Neil threw a more catchable ball too.

Just an observation from an ex-midget football QB .....

  51. HAPPY DUKE DONALDSON DAY!!

The Cairo, GA, native arrived on the plains in the fall of 1984, along with fellow Georgian Kevin Porter. Although Duke was generally overshadowed by fellow receivers Lawyer Tillman and Freddie Weygand, he did lead the Tigers in receptions during the 1987 season.

Honorable mentions to LB Derrick Graves and RB Chris Linderman. Any other 29 shout outs?

    WARRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
    GO TIGERS!!!

p.s. he's not a former Tiger, but day 29 can't go by without me giving a shout out to Felipe Alou.
p.p.s. The competition for tomorrow is just too keen. We may have to have a cage match tonight to sort it all out.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous6:40 AM

I just watched the Burns/Caudle video and I must agree with everyone's assessment. I don't know a whole about football, but it seemed that Neil's throwing motion was much more fluid than Kodi's. It also seemed like there was more "oomph" on the ball.

First USA Today Poll is out for consumption.

Don't be surprised our Auburn Tigers did not make the Top 25. They won't be cracking it all year.

It's dark times on the Plains but I look forward to the light at the end of the tunnel and just hope it's not a train.

    -HH

    ReplyDelete
  58. HH- I'm not saying that we will ever be a worthy Top 25 team, but if we are 4-0 heading into the UT game, then we will be in the Top 25. I do see where we received 12 votes.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous6:55 AM

    Eddie,

We won't be 4-0 heading into the Tennessee game. We will be 2-2 at best.

Auburn will lose the opener and will lose to West Virginia.

Sorry, gang, but rebuilding projects are always messy at the start.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Auburn got some points in the poll. That means someone put them in the top 25. Be advised that coaches ain't dumb.

Not only will Auburn be 4-0, they will be 5-0. Arkansas will be tough.

    ReplyDelete
  63. One poor season does not a rebuilding make. We got good players, we got good coaches, we will win games.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous7:07 AM

I have to disagree with HH. I do not think it's dark time on the Plains at all. Maybe last season, but this season looks bright and there will be even brighter days after that.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Anonymous7:08 AM

No quarterback and lack of depth are the biggest problems.

Good thing is with a new staff comes new energy especially in recruiting. It won't take long to rebuild Auburn. I am sure of it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Anonymous7:09 AM

I take solice that neither LSU (a team I truly despise) nor Alabama will win the West this year either.

    Ole Miss is real.

    ReplyDelete
  67. HH- I'm no sunshine pumper for this season, but 2-2 in the first 4 games is the best you see this team? I know we can be 2-2, but I actually feel that we have a realistic shot to be 4-0.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anonymous7:22 AM

I'm no sunshine pumper either and have actually been called a pessimist (I prefer "realist"), but one thing I do know is that Auburn will be better than last season.

La. Tech is loaded with talent. Talent that beat an SEC team we got by 3-2 last year.

West Virginia boatraced us and they are not going to drop as far as some think.

We should handle Mississippi State and Ball State.

Tennessee is a toss up to me.

    ReplyDelete
  70. For those of you that missed the podcast, it replaying again in about 2 minutes on Blog Talk Radio. My brother co-hosted with me and had some good insight on Chizik, especially since he was on the Iowa State sidelines for a game last year.

Replay of Auburn Football Insider Podcast from 8-5-09

    ReplyDelete
  71. HH- I'll give you that La Tech is a good team and a dangerous game for us. We still have way more fire power than they do as far as personnel goes and we should win. We may not win, but we should. Miss State will be pretty bad this year, just too much culture shock going on there and playing them early is a lot better than playing them later. West Virginia lost 4 Offensive lineman and it's Star QB that will force them to change their offense to be a more balanced team. I understand they still have the lethal Noel Devine, but this game is more of a toss-up situation than us just being the dogs. Ball State was good last year, but it lost a ton, we should win.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Good morning everyone:

Even as snakebit, injury prone and dysfuntional as we were last year, we still had double digit halftime leads in 5 of our 7 losses. This is not a team devoid of talent. Thin yes but not tragically so.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Anonymous7:42 AM

    La. Tech 21 Auburn 14
    Auburn 24 MSU 3
    West Virginia 17 Auburn 10
    Auburn 23 Ball State 14

My predictions on the first 4 games scores.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Ole Miss will be 8-4 or 9-3, because that's what Nutt does no matter how much talent he has.

If we don't score more than 24 on a Ball State team that lost everything from their good year last year, then Gus isn't as good as advertised.

    ReplyDelete
  75. "There's no sunshine when she's gone...."

    ReplyDelete
  76. In the first 5 games, I think we can be anywhere from 5-0 to 3-2.

The West Virginia game is intriguing, because they are breaking in a new QB and I'm guessing his first road game will be at JH, so that can be pretty intimidating, especially at night.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Anonymous8:07 AM

West Virginia's new QB isn't that new. He played a lot for the oft injured Patrick White.

Ole Miss is better than people think. Though Nutt's underachievement is legendary.

Tennessee will throttle us. They will be on high after they upset Florida.

  80. "Tennessee will throttle us. They will be on high after they upset Florida."

This is where you lost me.

UT has just as many question marks and depth concerns as we do, all the concerns you had about Auburn are the exact concerns that UT has.

So after spending all summer talking trash about Florida, you think UT is going to go to the swamp and beat Flordia? UF has probably spent all summer working on beating UT. Kiffin's quotes are probably all over the weight room and locker room. That game isn't going to be pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  81. BHam News had a good article on your depth issues. Saying as of today, we will start the season with 75 players and the league cap is normally 85. They went over the numbers from the last four recruiting classes. So if anyone wants to play or transfer, walk on to Auburn this is the time to do it.

We get WVU at home this time.
Jarrett Brown replaces Pat White. He has a good arm, but weak leaks. He's not very mobile and tends to force it. This is behind a very inexperienced OL. He will be taking some hits so keeping him healthy is a big issues. Not to mention their backup QB broke his foot and may not even be ready to play.
