Scrimmage notes, 8/11

Hey everyone. I'll have to run this out in stages.

STAGE ONE
  • The scrimmage was closed to reporters.

  • The offense "won" the scrimmage. The coaches have a scoring system that rewards points for various accomplishments.

  • Neil Caudle, Kodi Burns and Chris Todd appeared to split time with the first-team offense. Tyrik Rollison and Clint Moseley split time with the second-team offense, though it sounds like the young guys garnered significantly more snaps than The Big Three.

  • Why would coaches, who ostensibly are searching for a starting quarterback, play the young guys more than The Big Three? Maybe they already have their No. 1 in mind.

  • Onterrio McCalebb played a couple of series. He scored a touchdown. He also broke off a long (30+ yards) run.

  • Ben Tate had one carry.

  • Someone here mentioned earlier that D'Antoine Hood, recently shifted from cornerback to safety, is out with an ankle injury. That has not been confirmed (or denied), but Gene Chizik said Hood did not participate tonight. Draw your own conclusion.

  • Antonio Coleman said he thought the No. 1 defense was better than the No. 1 offense, but that the No. 2 offense was better than the No. 2 defense.

  • Ted Roof seemed angry afterward. Maybe he was ready to break down scrimmage tape. I don't know.

STAGE TWO

  • Onterrio McCalebb: ``I scored. I'd say it was 30 yards. I broke through a hole between the tackles, took it outside and got away from some people. I started to feel my rhythm. I know where the holes are going to be. I get to it. After that I get past everybody and it's a wrap. I'm gone."

  • Ben Tate: "I did well. I didn't mess up. I only got the ball one time. (Etheridge) came through the hole. He was unblocked. It was a draw. I drug him for a few yards."

  • Emory Blake on his long touchdown catch: "It was a deep post route and Clint Moseley threw it up and it was a good pass, I didn't have to break stride at all. I just went and the last thing I stretched my arms out and caught the ball."

  • Chris Todd: "Everybody had two drives to do some good stuff and we kind of knew that going in."

  • Chris Todd on when Gus Malzahn will make a decision at quarterback: "That's a great question. I'm in the same boat you guys are. I don't know. We'll wait and see."

  • Kodi Burns on his (brief) appearance: "My day was pretty solid. I didn't get that many reps. We were rotating five guys. The young guys got a lot more reps than the older guys. At the same time, if I had to evaluate myself? I did a pretty solid job."

  • Tyrik Rollison: "I thought I did a pretty good job out there. Being surrounded by a whole bunch of college guys and this being my freshman year, it was kind of hectic. I wasn't nervous but I guess the change of speed from high school in college, that's a big step. The speed out there was like crazy."

STAGE THREE
  • "Confirmed" touchdowns:
    • McCalebb run
    • Eric Smith run
    • Philip Lutzenkirchen pass from Tyrik Rollison
    • Emory Blake pass from Clint Moseley

  4. The entire scrimmage was closed to reporters? That is unacceptable to my thirst for knowledge!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow, that is a bit of a shocker. I expected the big three QBs to get a lot of snaps.

The second team offense being better than the second team defense is interesting. The second string defensive line should be better than the second string offensive line.

  8. What's up Hotties? I'm hot out here in the SoCal desert area where it was literally 106 in the shade when I left the hospital. This further confirms my anti-outdoor running position while I'm here.

Ted Roof probably realizes what happened to last year's defense will happen to this year's defense and he's not happy about it.

Or maybe his wife switched him to decaf without his knowing.

  26. Just added a bunch of quotes.

  27. Anonymous8:15 PM

If Rollison thinks that's fast, wait til he sees Eric Berry flashing his hands and turning his hips in Knoxville.

  28. "After that I got past everybody and it's a wrap."

    Wow...just wow.

  29. He deserves more hype, McCalebb.

  30. Anonymous8:20 PM

Jay G., you've been pretty high on him for a while. What about him fits well with this system and these players?

    ReplyDelete
  31. He's fast as hell.

    That's how he fits in.

    ReplyDelete

    "He's fast as hell.
    That's how he fits in."

    nice work.

    ReplyDelete

OMC operates well in space....and "he's fast as hell"

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jay I nominate you for the front page quote! LOL

JGT on what about McCalleb fits well with this system and these players: "He's fast as hell.
    That's how he fits in."

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'll second that. Much better than having that douchebag priceless out there.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This QB decision is going to be a tear jerker. It would have actually helped if one of the top three had come out saying how they really sucked butt in the scrimmage. I hate this competition must come to an end. How about the 4 QB rotation. We can have one QB per quarter. It could be a good problem to have.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Scrimmage impressions ...

    1. The No. 2 D is aptly named.
    2. All of our QBs are All-SEC caliber -- in their own minds.
    3. Jay G thinks McCalebb is "fast as hell," which he views as a positive.
    4. Mike Priceless didn't get a bid into Alpha Upsilon Habotn, and his feewings are hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  43. nice summary. almost time for RESCUE ME. later.

    ReplyDelete
  44. OMC doesn't need a any encouragement does he. I like that quote.

I agree with Jay's assumption/question. The coaches may already have their number 1 guy. You would think they would be looking for #2 though, unless they already have the whole thing planned out.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anonymous8:47 PM

Sounds to me like Gus is trying to decide which of the younger QBs to keep and who to redshirt. Personally, I see no problem with the plan tonight. Sure can't play all five of them vry much in a 70 play scrimmage.

    ReplyDelete
  46. wtc, after looking at your avatar, let me say that as guys go, you our cute as all get out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. WTC ...

How ya holdin' up? ElTurbo leaves Thursday, and Mama is strugggggggglin'.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I see where Adams and Washington each an INT. Good for them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anonymous8:54 PM

It sounds like they concentrated more on getting a good look at the new guys in this one to see if and where they could contribute. They've probably got a fair idea of where the older players stand from spring.

I agree the QB race is going to be narrowed down soon, maybe by next practice. I doubt it's over yet though.

    ReplyDelete
  50. All aboard the Kodi train....The next Auburn starting QB.

    ReplyDelete
  51. JET-holding up Ok. She has been gone now since 07.27.09. She does call quite often. going through rush now is keeping her busy. She asked wifey to stay with her last night and tonight. Today is her birthday and she was so busy she asked me to come over Thursday to celebrate with her.

  52. Va Tech's top RB -- a 1,200 yard guy last year -- tore his ACL today.

    ReplyDelete
  53. FSJ can only wish for that to happen. In my George Bush , Sr (Dana Carvey voice) Not gonna happen.

    ReplyDelete
  57. WTC ...

I think they've called the family in, so to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, I believe it looks like BB&T may have a new presence in AL soon.

    ReplyDelete
  59. How about Rollinson and Moseley throwing the TD passes.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Jay, your second stage 1 seems to be a list of newcomers. It seems that is the focus of the scrimmage.

Also, I am glad to not see any injury announcements, other than Hood.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Lutz with a TD catch. I can't who said during recruiting but they said Lutz German named meant "Trott with hands"

    That was a great quote.

    ReplyDelete
  62. wtc... how's your daughter making it so far in rush? My sister is going through as well, and seems to be enjoying it so far.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I can't recall who said that quote. Speak up if you are still around and want to take credit.

    ReplyDelete
  64. DM-she is enjoying it also. Been very busy with all those meetings. I am going over on bid day, whenever that is. I was told that is a CAN'T miss day.

    ReplyDelete
  65. AU had a lineman from Minn in town to watch the scrimmage. 6'7"-315lbs.

    WOW.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 3 in a row, somebody stop me. I'm smokin'

    ReplyDelete
  67. I live the funk, Snowhare.

I don't real bass guitar. Just fake bass guitar ... ie Rock Band y Guitar Hero WT.

    ReplyDelete

I bet Tommy Trott is hell on flies in his living area considering he pair of swatters he is blessed with.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I can tell Jay, I can tell. I bet you'd be on heck of a bassist.

    Thanks for the tip Monica.

I may never meet anyone on here but I will always appreciate the friendliness, humor, knowledge, and wisdom that flow through this group. Thanks all

  72. Anonymous9:27 PM

I'm just afraid that all this "sitting the starters" mess is gonna make us soft. Play em Coach!

The way I see it, it seems we have had more injuries when they're in shells than in full contact drills anyways. McNeal and McFaddin weren't in pads when they got hurt. Neither was Tristan Davis the day he broke his toe. Turn em' loose. They can handle it.

    Just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  73. OK-just looked up the kid from Minn. Looks like a big tub of gue. How can you be that big and not have been heard of by anybody. Must have been coming through the area on his way back from a summer beach trip and thought he would take in a practice.

    ReplyDelete
  74. FAH: McCalebb, Neiko Thorpe, PPL.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Sorry but what is FAH. I am not that hip.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Mosley to Blake: a portent of things to come? Perhaps next year. I don't see a scenario where he wouldn't redshirt.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thanks for the help

    ReplyDelete
  78. watching post-scrimmage interview videos.... i like Emory Blake...
