Whoops...messed up your little sentence there, didn't I. My bad...
IV, I love your stories. You should consider starting a blog to collect all your stories (as I would hate to miss one since I don't get to read all the HABOTN comments). I am sure there are a lot of other Auburn fans around who would like to hear about old games from a firsthand account, also.
I am sure that most everyone knows how Coach Jordan got the nickname of Shug by now, but being that he and I both grew up in Selma about 20 years apart, I love to tell the story to the uninitiated. When Coach Jordan was a boy, he had an affinity for sugar cane, couldn't get enough of it, so all of his buddies started to call him "Sugar Cane". The nickname stood that way until he reached Auburn and his new teammates cut it to Shug. I had the honor to meet Coach Jordan and talk with him on two separate occasions, once actually having the honor of eating breakfast at the coaches table with him in a downtown Lexington hotel after a big win over Kentucky the night before. I still stand in awe of him today and remember well how happy he was to be able to take the time to talk with someone from his home town.
IV, having grown up outside the state of Alabama (AF brat), I don't know as much AU history as I should. I love all your stories and agree with Michela that a blog is a great idea!
I would like to take a train to an Auburn game - like maybe Marta to the SECCG at the Ga Dome
Did the Marta-to-the-dome thing for the 2004 SECCG - there was a bit of European hooliganism going on, if you can count the drunks whizzing in public at the Lenox station
Back in the days....Auburn always played Ga Tech in Atlanta and had beaten Auburn 15 years in a row. So my favorite Auburn Ga. Tech game was 1955, Auburn won 14-12 with Tech missing a field goal with about 1 minute left.
Michael, That is the most serious note I have ever seen you post, at least I will take it that way. You flatter me and I thank you for your interest in what an old man has to say. My life as an Auburn Tiger has been fun to say the least. God really blessed me when he decided that I should start life off in burnt orange and navy blue diapers. I love your posts also. You were and still are one of my favorites on this site. I laughed at many of your posts while lurking long before I got the passion to post. After all, you gave me my first handle before Mr. Tate strongly suggested I should change it from Michael's Tim to something else. I don't think I have the expertise to start nor the patience to maintain a blog. And there are many more that have far more memorable stories to tell about Auburn when they were young.
I love the way IV calls it "the passion to post".
Just to clarify, the hooligans referenced above were not AU alumni or fans. They weren't homeless beggar panhandlers, but they were from the Panhandle, as evidenced by their mullets and jorts (even in early December).
aha. I missed the Transition from Mikey's Tim to IV...
never let me question your substance again.
This IV is like a 14 gage, 'cause he's flowin' wide open
marta = train to a football game.
dnatl, that cracked me up!
I wish I could find the rat cap post from IV. Help.
Digger, You know as well as I do about that damn Tech series always being in Atlanta. They would not play us in Auburn and the SEC would not do anything about it. They were the elite team and Bobby Dodd was the SEC darling. Even when Coach Jordan got them to play our home game in Alabama, they said it had to be in Birmingham. Auburn was such a small hamlet to them and did not have the hotels and enough eating establishments to facilitate their fans. I still get mad thinking about them and that damn Georgia bunch not agreeing to a home and home series. For so many years, the Auburn-Georgia games were played in Columbus. There were three things that Coach Jordan wanted to do about our schedule. He wanted to get Georgia Tech to play us at our home stadium for our home game, not theirs, get the Georgia game on a home and home basis and to get the Tide to play our home games in Cliff Hare Stadium, that is what it was before the PTB renamed it Jordan-Hare stadium. He lived to see the Georgia teams play in Auburn. How I wished he had lived to see the first game on the plains when the Tide came calling and we sent them packing. Coach Jordan always said that your home games should be played on campus on Saturday afternoons so the old grads could come back to enjoy Auburn again. What a man.
It's cool that all the best Auburn folks gravitate to the HABOTN.
D. Miller... Sugar on grits? I'm a little disappointed in you. I thought you were raised better than that. You actually kiss your Momma with the mouth you put that yankee abomination into? What's next, Cream of Wheat? I just can't even look at you right now.
Jet, nice call on the Oakview Farms grits. Multo gustoso. There's a mill up in Wilsonville that produces fine stone ground grits as well.
I enjoy the stories IV... Since I was born in '80, I don't know much AU history from before the mid-late 80's.... Certainly not from personal experience at least.
Yes IV I remember the situation well. Back then Bobby Dodd was the fair hair boy and I loved it when they at least had to come to B'ham. I went to every game in Atlanta and Columbus will attending Auburn. Also loved it when Ga. came to Auburn.
IV..I want to hear about all Auburn games prior to 1982 with the exception of the following years...
1972, 1970, 1969, ....
just kidding.
IV, meant to tell you the other day that you know Chocolate Scott from scouts too.
j-z, it all started in my school days growing up, when the cafeteria grits were so horrid that I had to use whatever I had to make them edible... they didn't offer butter or honey so I had to use sugar packets... it stuck...
I prefer cheese, secondly butter and honey... if I have nothing else, I will put sugar on them.
Monica, if I knew what I was doing on this machine and had half as much computer sense as you young folks, I would help you find the rat cap story. However, it was just a sentimental old man rambling about much of nothing. You people don't know how much your kind compliments mean to me. Half the time I don't know what I am talking about and the other half I am trying to type while wiping away some tears thinking about my wonderful life and the present God gave me when he made me an AUBURN man.
This comment has been removed by the author.
I just can't talk to you right now Dusty.
IV you must have missed my rat cap story. My rat cap was orange beany type with a short blue bill. Some Frats would have their pledges run through a crowd and snatch a cap off of an unsuspecting Freshman. Mine got snatched while at a pep rally with Shug talking. He got away too.
J-Z, please don't tell me that Scott Choc's last name starts with a Z. Also, last night you said that your best friend's son was the starting center on the AA team. Don't tell me that the tireman is your best friend. I thought he had better taste.
and yes, I was forced to eat cream o wheat growing up... i do not like it.
IV, Not Z. But you're right on the other. He's my son's Godfather.
here are two of IV's posts from the "HOF Adjustments" thread...
IV said...
Wow, I have finally been able to catch my breath and the staff here at the home has gotten my heart rhythm back on track. I need to do some catching up by first of all saying Jay, there is no possible way that anyone on this blog can appreciate your creating, maintaining and continuing to make this the finest blog on the web anymore than I do. I thank you as I kowtow to your hotness. You are without exception the best. I would also like to apologize to the very deserving people who's place I took on the list. And what were those people who talked to Jay on my behalf thinking?
Digger, I did not graduate. Long story made simple, I ran out of smarts, guts and money all at the same time. I attended from fall 1957 thru spring 1959 as a co-op student, so it was not a continuous attendance at that. This remains the one thing on my life's resume that I wished I had filled in.
By your stating that you graduated in 1956 means that you are my senior by a few years. Just think, had I made it a year earlier or you finished a year latter, you could have been one of the upperclassmen that made sure I had my rat cap on. Ah, the good old days.
Lastly, and I do apologize for the length of this post, to the person that was questioning whether to stay in Atlanta for the UAT-VT game or go to our Auburn, always but always take the option to go to Auburn. God has given us only a certain amount of opportunities to go to Auburn. Always go with God's plan.
7:06 PM
In my previous post, I was telling Digger about his maybe having been one of the upperclassmen to check to see if I had my rat cap on. Story... In those days, all Auburn freshmen had to buy and wear a rat cap until Auburn beat Alabama in any sport. I wore mine until the end of the '57 beat down of UAT in B'ham. At the end of the game, I tossed my rat cap high in the air and never saw it again. I was so tired of that thing..... What I wouldn't give to have today?
IV - yeah, from time to time I post without a joke included, maybe 3% of the time. It always seems to shock people. I should probably preface such posts with a disclaimer that no humor is involved, thus people who aren't interested won't waste their time reading my thoughts.
Thanks so much, THT.
I'm going to start saving IV's stories to a Word document. If you find the Rat Cap story let me know.
No Digger, I did not miss your rat cap story. You just did a beautiful job of covering the details as how some frosh had to get their caps that I just wouldn't interject and mess it up. I never have liked to step in another man's territory. Good story and yes I had to protect myself several times to keep mine from being scarffed up.
it was easy to find since it was shortly followed by Michael's dunce cap story. I sure hope he and his dad will one day will bury the hatchet on that.
oh that was it...I'm a goober. Sorry. :-)
http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/tbook/older/traditions/rats.html
IV see how fast the young folks are. I think THT is a cyber guru but doesn't want anyone to know it.
IV - That's quite alright. If you'll just do us the honor of telling your stories here I'll try to keep up with them and keep them all in one place if that's ok with you.
One of these days... I have got to learn how to properly link...
THT - the only way my dad will forgive me is if I wear the hat again indefinitely. I have a job and there are people around who almost respect me, so I won't put that hat back on! I won't!
Well J-Z, give me a hint as to how I know Scott Choc. OA, summer camp, camporees any hint might help my feeble old brain connect on this one.
THT is a 'tard. Just ask 2.0.
Well, great, Mon. You messed with my head and made me go searching some more. I loved this one:
IV said:
We also had a freshman creed, not creed, I can't think of the word at the moment, that we were supposed to be able to repeat at any given time upon the request of an upperclassman. It went...
"Sir, since every living creature, no matter how small or insignificant, has the right to strive for its existence, I, a lowly freshman, lower than all other living creatures except the rats at Georgia Tech and Alabama, respectfully request the right to live."
I haven't forgot it after all of these years. Amazing.
Mon...
It's at 7:21. I think I remember another one later in same thread, but not positive.
I'm going to let The Daughter watch "Dumb and Dumber" tonight. I'll be keeping out a close eye for bad words.
I don't remember that being an issue with that movie, though.
Should be fun!
This one's for a Lamborghini, you might want to hang onto that one.
Michael, just think of the respect you'd earn from those people if they saw you honoring your father in that way. Ok, maybe it wouldn't be respect. But it would get their attention.
D, Miller looks like Auburn stole the Rat Hat idea from Tech. I did not know that
Monica, anything you do is alright by me. You and that hot new 55 year old bottle blonde night nurse they just hired here at the home get my attention quickly. Not saying you are anywhere close to that hussy's age. By the way didn't you just have your 21st birthday.
Boxhead - you wore a box on your head and put it on Al Gore's Intertubes (I still have it linked). You're really concerned about respect?
JayGT
or maybe just watch it in Spanish.
Tech may have stolen it from AU and just turned in into an acronym to cover up the theft...
BTW - I didn't have time to catch up on posts from the other threads of the day today, but this one has been fun reading.
I definitely like our newcomers.
Norm...
Don't forget about the goats and "the cooler incident".
North Avenue Trade School
Proper punctuation IV when you address Monica you dumb do do, proper punctuation.
jay, the shitzu joke, the fantasy wear he rips the heart out and the two take their clothes off in front of each other are scenes to be mindful of in dumb and dumber. It is a big day when one's child watches one of the greatest movies of our time. Congrats.
And you guys are right, Dunce Hat back on!
You guys keep up with my stories too well. Some of yall might end up thinking i am weird.
IV I love you more and more every day. By the way, hussy is a GREAT word.
Hurray!!! Your dad will be so proud.
Michael, nah, you're just an engineer
Be still O broken heart, she has left you for a much younger man.
Since I called him out on it and in case you haven't seen it or don't remember it, here's our one and only Michael/Jan Terri/Queen of HABOTN/whatever other titles apply:
Captain Boxhead
I wanna hear Michael's stinky cooler story again. I laugh every time I think about that. The problem is, I think about that story way too often.
IV, T25, graduated with me, and his Dad's a pharmacist.
Digger = Original DOM
Nuff said
;-)
J/K Mon
It's been a big night for me tonight. Michael and others have made my head swell to a size slightly above extra fat, no that's the size shirt I wear. Hat size? they don't make 'um that big after tonight. I do have a few more stories about our beloved AUBURN but I better save them for another day. After all, I am going to run out one day and you won't know me then. Here comes that young blonde chick with my night medicines, so I better call it a night. Another big day here at the home tomorrow, preaching and singing and the early service starts a 5:00 A. M.
As only an Auburn person could understand, and my friend Faker, I give each of you my WAR EAGLE love. Goodnight all.
Sweet Auburn dreams, IV. Get a good night's rest so you can wake up hatin!
Good night IV hope you don't catch that blonde hussy because you won't remember what to do.
I'm outta here too, time to get back to work. Day 13 post won't be up at midnight, but sometime before dawn.
Digger, I was about to cut off my machine when I caught your post. You are right. I am just like the dog that loves to chase cars. If I caught one, I couldn't drive it. Keep hate fresh.
Sweet Auburn dreams, IV.
Digger - and you would???
Nevermind. I know you would.
LOL
ME TOO !
I wonder if JGT had this in mind when he started a serious sports blog?
Good night all!
Monica, I always loved the word 'Hussy', too.
My sisters and I would make some off color remark (that would SO not be considered off color by HABOTN standards) just to try to get my Mother to say, "You hussy!"
LOL. It was the dirtiest word my grandmother used! Used to tickle me to death when I heard her say it. I would always try and get her to repeat it, but she knew the game...
Yes! Exactly! lol
I walked outside with Team Dog Z, and it felt incredible. It feels like late September/early October in the Gump ... a breeze from the north, promising that football is near.

Ok, anyone care to recap, I seem to be gravitating to IV's stories and can't seem to catch anything else going on. Have I missed anything?
I think there was a scrimmage today, but I'm not sure. I don't think anyone got to watch it. That and Gus Malzahn looks like Clark Griswold.
And THT's daughter started posting.
All I know is two weeks from now, we'll have just finished our first glimpse at the Tigers.
JZ you're trying to pick a fight with me.
I'm watching the CBS NCAA Preview Show. I have no reason for this, but I absolutely can't seem to like Pete Carroll.
Jet, can I get an arbitrator here? Decide if Gus doesn't have some of Clark's mannerisms.
And I've discovered that Michael and Kristina somehow have a pact to show up at the same time.
And I think I saw something about grits, italian daughters, and hookers in iceboxes... but don't quote me on that.
IV is that man you want to sit and listen to all day long and hear the stories about Auburn and what it means to truly be an Auburn man or woman. Fantastic stuff!!
oh like this is going to be fair?? c'mon...
I need a habotn hide button!!
And on that note - I think I got a chance to participate in the last regular Wreck Tech parade, and what a blast that is!! Not sure if they had one with the two most recent games against Tech
My Tommy when was the last one? I know there was one in '84 lol
I think that's about right Mon. 25 years .... OMG!! I didn't think it was THAT long ago.
Something is wrong with me...I just decided to have a salad for a late night snack.
last "regular" game in AU vs GT series was 1987.
Just took a look Mon - it was 87. Only 22 years ago. I'm not sure if they had one in 03 or 05
j-z - SPIT IT OUT! CALL 911! They can pump your stomach on the way to the hospital.
J-Z, here's your ruling.
Gus does not equal Clark Griswold.
Phillip Lolley could be Cousin Eddie, though.
the psych hospital ;-)
j-z - if you've got meat on that salad, you're good.
Now wait a second here... I first developed the theory that FSJ and Kristina showed up at the same time only. Now I am part of a Kristina conspiracy? My how the tables have turned.
Good thing I can contest the arbitrator's ruling.
No meat, but a little cheese.
Does anywhere but Prattville have a bbq joint that makes a barbecue salad?
So tomorrow is Dan Marino day?
It's all a conspiracy Micheal
JZ = sore loser
Coach Gus and I await your apology.
They had a wreck tech parade a couple of years ago... but no one really cared. Sad when you lose a rival. Doh well, I guess we already have more rivals than we know what to do with.
michael - that was my confusion. but now it apparently has morphed into fact.
Either Kristina's disdain for bammers or her pre op transsexual fetish won out. Either way, you're the man now Michael.
perhaps just on the other side of Mason's and Dixon's line, mytommyd
Or not the man...however that works.
anybody up for Antoine Nolan Day?
didn't think so.
Having dealt with a myriad of issues today, I am heading to bed to get some sleep.
Good night to all the HOT ONES.
sweet Auburn dreams to you, too, Mr Jet
Dang. I thought I had it THT I mean he was a 13, although he really had nothing to do with Auburn ... at all. Glad I got the correct side of the US though
i'm logging off in hopes I get to go home soon.
Night Jet - Beat Bama
HATE UAT. Buenos noches.
War Eagle THT -G' Night hot ones!!
Don't know if I can make it 22 more minutes THT. Any chance of bringing in the new day early?
Anyone watching "We Are Marshall"? Not sure why I am so drawn to sad football movies.
Where's THT when we need him?
who will be lucky 13?
i just noticed the AU sticker i put on my new car is missing. while there is no evidence to support my theory, i suspect some cousin humper mischief. the exact same sticker that is on my wife’s car is still in place after a baking summer and numerous car washes so i don’t think it just fell off. i think someone tried to peel off the one on my old car as well but did not have the opposable thumbs to finish the job which does indeed point to cousin humper activity. i’d like to get a hold of whoever did it and dish out some sharia justice and cut their hand off. i’ll just have to wait two weeks and get a new one at the bookstore. i could go to tiger pride in the mall but i will not go that close to the store next door to it. that other store makes me want to start fires and i must take other mall-goers safety into consideration.
The Latest News on Eric Smith
The plot thickens... No wonder CGC was so vague.
Do we need to put out an APB on THT? I hope 2.0 didn't carry out on her threats. That might have been enough to push him over the edge.
I suspect we've seen the last of Mr. Smith.
If you're in the Gump ... get out of bed and walk outside like I just did to gather my morning Advertiser ... a glorious day.
We're less than two weeks away!
I'm full of joy ... and hate!
J-Z
I think CGC is vague because he just is - Eric Smith's situation notwithstanding.
Hotties, I suspect an evil conspiracy is at play here. This doesn't relate to football, but I feel is vitally important for our future. Some of you with small children may have seen this and not really noticed it, but since I am the most observant person in the world, little gets past me. The conspiracy of which I speak involves shows geared towards small children (my soon to be 3 y/o son for one) and force feeds some foreign language on them. I already knew about the multitude of shows forcing Spanish into my home (I change the channel immediately if at all possible) but now apparently the Chinese are exerting their world dominance and trying to teach my son their language.
I don't like this. Not one bit.
Keep Hate Alive. It's for the children.
Norm is also vague.
Go read, The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman.
sorry, folks. I just crashed when I got home from work. Usually I'm up for hours after I get home. It must be the old age. I'll have us a Kickoff Kountdown in just a few minutes
Take your time, THT. Your efforts are legendary already.
I thirst for knowledge.
T-minus 13 days til kickoff!!!
HAPPY JAMES MCKINNEY DAY!!!
James McKinney was a two-time ALL-SEC Free Safety for the Auburn Tigers in the late '70s. James led the Tigers with 5 INTs in 1977 and again with 4 INTs in 1979.
James McKinney high schooled in Sulligent, AL, where he played QB on a team which featured a more high profile player, James's cousin Joe Cribbs. They both arrived in Auburn in the fall of 1976.
WARRRRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!
La mia sete di conoscenza è stato spento.
molto buono
Mi chiedo se Eric Smith sarà dato il via alla squadra, o gravata da una sospensione di sei partita.
is anyone else as disgusted with the new AU football "media guide" as I am? Granted, I can't read, but I've got people who can read to me. I don't need a glorified picture book.
j-z, you're tempting me to wake up THT2.0.
good question, though. I'd say the latter.
Vorrei ringraziare il Tar Heel famiglia Tiger per dedicare tanto tempo alla mia educazione.
Ora, io parto per la Chiesa.
Bless you, j-z.
Well dangit. I am NOT learning that language.
Uh, J-Z, can I see your green card?
Otherwise, speak English, or return to your rightful home.
Howdy Aero! What's for supper?
Brother Jet, have you seen the Scarbinsky article from the B'ham News on Jones and Ingram's fishing trip? It is an interesting read.
It's supposed to be Grilled chicken and pasta of some sort, THT.
Not ready yet so I'm not sure what kind. I'll ask the cook.
would interested to know if this is sour grapes from someone who picked a fight with a guy bigger than him (not knowing ES was a fball player) and deservedly got the knuckle sandwich he was asking for. it has been known to happen for invincible college kids to play with fire and get burned. having lost the battle, our fearless victim moves on to misdemeanor assault charges in an attempt to win the war and exact his revenge for his lost masculinity.
i'm not defending cold-cocking some drunk @rse, but at least ES did not pull a gun or knife on the guy or something. too many times today that is the solution the young 'uns use to resolve petty squabbles. ES handled it rightly or wrongly "the olde fashion way".
chiz will surely find the facts and act accordingly.
Chicken + spinach + pasta of some sorts. Dessert is fresh tropical fruits.
Fresh squeezed lemonade.
30 minutes from now.
That scarbinsky article was one of the biggest load of crap I've ever seen.
Depressed,
Didn't something similar happen with one of Auburn's quarterbacks, maybe Jeff Burger? Seems like I remember a hunting trip provided by an Alabama booster, but it was also a family friend. Kind of sketchy on the details.
buon giorno tutti!
I'm awfully hungry!!!
We're about to have cheese grits for breakfast. Well, all of us but THTJr who doesn't like grits at all. Yes, I saw him being born in Georgia with my very own eyes. Not really sure what happpened.
GOAL!!! West Ham scores!!!
How do I know this? I hear THTJr celebrating upstairs.
cincy, I had forgotten about that incident with Burger. All I can remember is that he and an O-Lineman(whose name escapes me) were taken on a hunting trip by a booster. Burger was not allowed to start the UF game, but he came in after Reggie Slack took one snap. I believe they were required to pay back the cost of the trip, but I am not sure. Burger was in so many "situations", it is hard to keep track of them all, you have a good memory!
Jet,
I come to the front row today to say that I no longer have hate for UAT. I no longer care about them. I have turned my attentions to the concerns we have on the Plains. They are many. I hope to one day return to the hate, but I do not know when that will be. Perhaps a couple of bowl games and steady progress will allow me to free the resources needed for the hate. Then again, I may not feel the need to hate UAT because I still do not care about them.
I await your excommunication decree.
- Sensi
I remember Burger was suspended.
I always thought it was for the plagiarism charge though. Forgot about the hunting thing.
New thread up.
What's up with the old geezer's trying (trying?) to seduce Monica?
