All we have are the embers (Part II)

Thanks for doing your part in making our second Thursday Campfire a success.

We had a total of 257 participants, which up from the afternoon session.

We discussed AOL Chat Rooms circa 1998, LOLs, ROFLs, Kodi Burns, the Wildcat position, Lou Holtz, Troy's tank job, the hideous Oregon uniforms, Tommy Tuberville's post-Auburn attitude and, of course, Erin Andrews.

I'd say it was a hit.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: "Hatin' With Jay G" will resume tomorrow on Supersport 930 AM out of Jackson, Miss. I am supposed to hit the airwaves/internet at 9:30 in the a.m.

  57. Blue people on a blue rug is just too monochromo for me. Now all we need is for the Blue Man Group to play at halftime

  61. I am playing football with my dog... he has good ball skills...and is being recruited as a DB

    ReplyDelete
  62. Good call THT. I guess I should have qualified that as to offense anticipation. Gus=excitement I think. I know that everyone was anticipating what the dynamic duo could do in 1968 and they did it.

  63. T-MINUS ONE DAY TIL KICKOFF!!!!

    HAPPY PETRIE-CHIZIK DAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. George Petrie started it all. The following information, with very minor modifications, is from Wapedia. The primary reference for the Wikipedia entry was Mike Jernigan's book, Auburn Man: The Life and Times of George Petrie.
George Petrie (1866-1947), born in Montgomery, was an American scholar and educator who played a crucial role in the development of Auburn University. From 1887 until his retirement in 1942, Petrie held various positions at Auburn, including professor of history and Latin, head of the History Department, and dean of the Graduate School. Petrie also organized and coached Auburn's first football team in 1892.

Petrie was the first Alabamian to earn a Ph.D. degree. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Virginia in 1887 and a Ph.D. in "history, political economy, and jurisprudence" from Johns Hopkins University in 1890. At Auburn (known until 1892 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, and from 1892 to 1960 as Alabama Polytechnic Institute), Petrie is considered the founder of both the History Department and the Graduate School, as well as the school's athletic program.

His time at the University of Virginia inspired Petrie to choose burnt orange and navy blue as the official colors for Auburn's athletic teams. Upon organizing the first Auburn football team in 1892, Petrie arranged for the team to play the University of Georgia team at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Auburn won the game, 10-0, in front of 2,000 spectators. The game inaugurated what is known to college football fans as the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.

From AU Special Collections intro to the George Petrie papers:

Biographical Sketch: Alabama historian. Petrie was appointed professor of history at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, in 1887. He served as academic dean from 1908 to 1921 and as graduate dean from 1921 until his retirement in 1942. Petrie wrote extensively on Alabama and Southern history, focusing on secession and the Civil War. Petrie's father, George Laurens Petrie, was minister of the Charlottesville (Va.) Presbyterian Church from 1872 to 1928. His grandfather, George Hollinshead Whitefield Petrie, preached in several churches in South Carolina and Georgia before becoming minister of the Montgomery (Ala.) Presbyterian Church, 1857-1885.

too long, must make it in 2 posts

    ReplyDelete
  64. His greatest contribution to future Auburn generations may not have been the establishment of football at Auburn, but his authorship of the Auburn Creed in 1943. Let's all try to follow Dr. Petrie's example:

I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count
only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.

I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work
wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.

I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot
win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.

I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is
not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.

I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all.

I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my
fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all.

I believe in my country, because it is a land of freedom and
because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that
country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly
    with my God."

And because Auburn men and women believe in these things,
I believe in Auburn and love it.

by George Petrie, Auburn professor and first coach of Auburn’s Football team

Coach Gene Chizik needs no introduction, but if you'd like to read about him, I suggest Writer Tate's outstanding work in Coaches Confidential, published by the Montgomery Advertiser.

Thanks to all your kind comments during the past 3 months of the Kickoff Kountdown. It's been a blast. A special thanks to Writer Tate for cleaning up my sloppy writing and making it presentable for front page.

btw, Mike Jernigan inteviewed in 2007 about his book on Dr. Petrie by a local ABC affiliate. You can order the book here.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Alright here comes my story...

    ReplyDelete
  72. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Scottie!!!

    Awwww IV, you sweet talker.

This boring night of football is a poor substitute for coming attractions.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Is there grease on that football?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Seriously...look at those all blue unis. They suck. I am so glad we don't wear all blue.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Thanks THT, you da man and I truly mean it. I know that took alot of work. We appreciate it. Take a rest. Good job.

    ReplyDelete

  80. Anonymous9:40 PM

ok, whew. on another topic - anyone know or can guess/speculate if wes byrum has his head screwed on straight this year?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I asked Jay on the campfire if he knew who will be handling kickoffs and he never answered. Anyone got an idea?

    ReplyDelete
  82. I withdraw the question.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Anonymous9:45 PM

Will he be Wes Byrum the ice man who stuck it to the Gators - twice?

    Or

Will he be Wes Byrum the slush man who couldn't connect on an extra point at Vanderbilt?

    ReplyDelete
  84. I have no idea, IV.

    ReplyDelete
  85. By handling kickoffs do you mean kicking them or receiving them?

Not that I know either way, but I didn't want you to think we were ignoring you.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I also think it is time to withdraw my butt to bed. To one and all a very goodnight. And a special goodnight to my new found Angel Abbie. This old man loves you.

    ReplyDelete
  87. George Petrie , a good man who chose our colors over a hundred years ago, hello....BURNT ORANGE AND NAVY BLUE, you'd think somebody would get it right by now!

    ReplyDelete
  88. THT, I'm going to miss your countdowns. But I am ready for kickoff.

    ReplyDelete
  89. when only the chicks are answering your football questions you might as well go to bed HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  97. Jet, how is the wife?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Boise sure looks like the better team right now

    ReplyDelete
  99. Kathy, did I miss it? Did your daughter have Swine Flu? I know she must have had a hellva headache with that high temp.

    ReplyDelete
  101. HABOTN ladies are right smart indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  102. This game is soooo boooring. Or is it just me? This is not getting me pumped for football. Does that ref sound a little weird?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Miller - I sure hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Great, now I can no longer mock bammers by describing their school as a poor imitation of UVA (since they based their campus on TJ's design). We stole their colors and UAT stole their campus layout. Knowing we share something like that makes me want to hurl.

Oh well, what they don't know won't hurt us I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Wow! He missed again!

    ReplyDelete
  106. missinit, we go back to the doctor in the morning for another blood test and hopefully to get the results from the H1N1 test. Whatever she has, it is definitely viral (be it the swine flu or some other virus). The Tamiflu will keep the virus from mulitplying. She was so sick last night. Her fever is down to 101 now and she is actually able to keep liquids down and has eaten a little bit tonight. This is definitely the sickest she has been in her 20 years. They do not want her on campus until her fever has broken and her white blood count is back up.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I love the Word Jet!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Gosh I'm going to miss the WVU pep rally tomorrow night.

    ReplyDelete
  109. There is nothing that worries you more than a sick child, whether they are 1 or 31 (in my case.)

I hope she will feel better soon.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Gosh Mon, so am I.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Coach Calapari was here tonight and it was a mullet fest!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Kathy ...

Wife is doing very well. Will go to AU on Sat. to hang out at ElTurbo's apt. while we go to game.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Thanks missinit. She hates being quarantined, but she understands she is very susceptible to everything right now as long as her WBC is low, plus she is very contagious.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Good news Jet. I know the visit will make her feel better.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Speaking of your wife Jet, will she have tissue damage from the bite? Necrosis or did they get it treated in time?

  118. Missinit ...

We're hopeful ... the wound looks OK thus far.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I'm hearing that Auburn has painted the field Orange for the game Saturday....

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sounds good...she will be in my prayers.

    ReplyDelete
  121. DMiller...what are you smokin?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Ball State helps our strength of sked tonight, losing at home to North Texas.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Apparently they are taking this All Auburn, All Orange thing seriously...

First they remove the Tiger Eyes from the stadium, now they paint the field Orange... now word yet on jersey colors.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Thanks FSJ, she is on the road to recovery. She's just inpatient.

    ReplyDelete
  125. This thing with J Harris at UAT has ties to the fisherman that Jones & Ingram went out on a boat with. Several UAT fans I knwo are saying that guy has close ties to AU (business partner is an AU grad or something) and that their is something called 'operation red dog' by a group of AU supporters trying to get UAT players in trouble by setting traps for them. They say the Jones/Ingram case was moved along because the NCAA thinks Others were trying to set a trap for them. What the crap are they talking about? Who can make this crap up? The guy telling me this is a REC memeber and firmly believes AU would do it because UAT is so far ahead of us and we can only win if we bring them down. What do you guys think about this?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Oregon is really struggling. Looks familiar.

    ReplyDelete
  127. wtc - I think I would rather concentrate on Auburn than on bama.

    ReplyDelete
  128. HOLY THUGGERY! Oregon's Blount needs to go smoke one and calm down. Hahahaha, stupid Duck.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Oregon's Blount is an idiot! The end.

  130. This comment has been removed by the author.

  131. I think those Boise fans that he decided to jaw with were lucky that enough people got involved. I think there were some broken facial bones in his fists if he wasn't restrained.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Speaking of Thunderdome beat downs, did FatDrunkandStupid show up at the campfire to ask Jay G the question that he said AB ducked? I tried to get it in at the end, just in case, but wasn't able to.

    ReplyDelete
  133. anyone notice that people we haven't seen in a while are popping back up? football.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Would this concept satisfy the all-orange haters? I think it looked pretty neat.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Anonymous2:30 AM

    Happy Brad Lester day!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Good morning, Hotties!!!!

Don't ya hate waking up in the morning and having to reset your router and modem before you can surf to HABOTN?

    I blame UA-T.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Speakng of Al Gore's web, this was the headline which greeted me at the end of the driveway this morning:

    Help is here for oversurfers

    ReplyDelete
  138. Ah yes, glorious Demontray Carter day has arrived.

    1 day to go.

Anybody been cold cocked by a passer by this morning?

    What a loser!

    ReplyDelete
  144. At least after last night Bob Davie is at mid season form. I watched the 3 quarters of that game an how he has a job I'll never know.

"Does the blue turf cause insomnia, because there are a lot of people sleepwalking out there."

    What?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Anonymous6:38 AM

Bob Davie could have been in The Paper Chase - he minds me of Hart.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Anybody see the Oregon RB hit the Boise state player after the game?

    ReplyDelete
  147. That's what I get for posting a few minutes after I refreshed the page.

That Oregon Back should be suspended for several games.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I'm looking forward to welcoming Jimmy Brumbaugh back to Auburn tomorrow. He is a great AU man. Nothing personal, but I hope he leaves town disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I just got offered two Bama / Tech tickets. I respectfully DECLINED.

    HATE BAMA

THT- Jimmy is a great guy. I really enjoyed knowing him while I was there.

    ReplyDelete
  150. That guy seemed to handle the loss well.

    ReplyDelete
  151. In honor of the thugaDuck, let's all punch someone at work today!

    Happy Petrie-Chizik Day!

    ReplyDelete
  152. I'm just glad this is national shake the other team's hand weekend. Way to get this weekend started off right. Heck, even Ok State won't participate.

Does anyone know what Memphis station Tubs was running his trap on yesterday?

    ReplyDelete
  156. I can't imagine getting to know all my Auburn heroes, Eddie. I think you are my new HABOTN hero.

p.s. Don't tell Michael and Harrison.

    ReplyDelete
  157. THT- If most of your hero's played from 1996-1999, i'm your man. My Brother had it just a little bit better, from 2000-2003 and working with the Running Backs. Let's see, his last year had Brown, Caddy, Jacobs & Tre Smith.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I have still yet to see/hear Tub say anything bad about this team, his time at Auburn or the current coaching staff at all...and that includes saying Gus is the wildcard because he doesn't have a track record at the SEC level other than a cup of coffee at Arkansas.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Anonymous7:29 AM

    Here's one instance, RK.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Sensi - I don't know, but my guess would be chris vernon on Fox Sports 730 am.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Anonymous7:35 AM

    Thanks, THT.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Sensi,

I heard that one the other day, he said Nutt wasn't a fan of Gus and that he is unproven at the SEC level.

Had any other analist said that, nobody would care. I saw nothing wrong with his comment.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Anonymous7:36 AM

I'm going to let this go because that's what I'm telling him to do.

I did read in the Memphis Commercial Appeal that he is taking his oldest boy to watch the Nicktator in ATL this weekend.

Guess we won't get to test Josh Moon's theory this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  164. He also complimented the staff, said while they lost some of the guys he was recruiting they had picked up others and said the he expected them to be improved and better than a lot of people think.

The funny comment he made was the he thought the SEC was down last year...which means we would have been a lot worse had the SEC been up. I don't think he realized how bad that made his coaching last year look.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Anonymous7:38 AM

Just the usual shotgun comments from Tubs.

    The end.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Sensi...

    ReplyDelete
  167. Anonymous7:40 AM

    Thanks, ehyou.

    ReplyDelete
  168. THT,

    Excellent job on the countdown.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Had anyone else made the comment, nobody would care.

He probably got the slight dig in because he's freinds with Nutt.

It was just a passing comment while answering a question that was asked of him and people seem to think it's bad.

I'm among the most patriotic stand up for Auburn people around, and I saw nothing bad in what he said.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Anonymous7:47 AM

RK, I have listened to it all again.

    Much ado about nothing.

    The end.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Sensi,

Why so abrupt with the "The end" stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  172. Good Morning, Hotties!!

It is a beautiful day on the plains! Got the kids to school decked out in their orange and blue with all the other kids. Got a "War Eagle" from Mr. Penny (the push-up guy), took Mr. Zookeeper to work and saw the tailgaters sitting out marking their spots, passed the stadium and played Nirvana on Guitar Hero 5. It's gonna be a good weekend!

Because it's pointless. I'm splitting hairs over him doing the same and I realized the hypocrisy.

Also, I'm getting in game day mode and Tubs won't be there - Chizik will.

How about that punk from Oregon?

  174. That punk from Oregon had talked trash for two weeks about how they didn't like Boise and they were going to pay them back from last year.

I guess paying them back was punching one of their players and trying to attack their fans.

  175. What up Hotties? Anyone else feel like the first game of the year was anticlimatic? I did.

1 day and counting. THT, I know it's been said, but thanks for doin all the great research for the KK.

  176. Kristina,

Have you seen the video they did on Guitar hero 5 where once you unlock the Kurt Cobain character they have video out there of him singing Bon Jovi and other stuff?

It just looks funny and badly out of place.

  177. Sean,

I think it's because the SC/NC State game was so boring.

Imagine had we kicked off last year with the Auburn/Miss State 3-2 game. That's the only way it would have been worse.

    RK,

Losing to Vandy 14-13 will always be worse than the 3-2 win over MSU in my book.

Losing to Vandy is always hard to take.

That being said, we are 20-20-1 with them.

  179. That's the best way to sum it THT. I thought NC State was going to give us a bit of drama there at the end to make up for the first 55 minutes of boring. Turns out I was wrong.

I am dying to know what the Boise St. player said to Blount. Who seemed to be getting stopped by HC Peterson.

Do you think Blount turned and yelled "DUCK!!"?
