Belated Tuesday night report

Hey everyone. I was in a hurry to get home Wednesday night, so I didn't provide a post-practice report. I'll denote that with a BONUS tag.
  • Gus Malzahn on Auburn's pace, which didn't satisfy him last week: ``we’re wanting to snap the football as fast as we can and keep the hammer down and not give them time to look up."

  • Malzahn on if he'll use TB Eric Smith this weekend: ``We’ll just have to see. It’s hard to say right now. We’re just kinda moving him around."

    BONUS
  • LB Craig Stevens on the beat-writer squabble he witnessed a few weeks back: ``I thought they were playing at first. I didn't know what to believe. I thought I was getting punked."

  • Stevens on his performance against Louisiana Tech: ``The first half, I'm not gonna lie. I was tired in the first half because I had to run down on the first kickoff and then they had a long drive right after that. It took me a while to get my breath back. Once I got my breath back and got my second wind, I was OK."

  • OL Andrew McCain on the task ahead: ``Our goal is to get to Atlanta and win in Atlanta. Mississippi State comes in with a really good defense. They play fast. They play physical. We've got a challenge ahead of us and we're in a situation where this is one practical step we can take toward our goal.

    BONUS
  • McCain on the team's approach heading into the Louisiana Tech game: ``Coach Chizik made a point before we left LaGrange to ride over here for the game … that people were going to watch us and people are going to her about us and how that game went. Based on that, they're going to make judgments on who we are. It's the same thing in life: People either see you do something or hear about something you did and they're making judgments on who you are.

  • McCain on why coaches seem almost grumpy this week: ``They don't want anybody to get ahead of themselves. It's one game and there's a whole lot more to come. It's one of those things where we said: We're going to enjoy this (on) Saturday night. That's the fruit of all the labor we've put in. Then the labor starts over again the next day."

  • Kodi Burns on the "Wildcat" formation: ``I definitely think it has a lot more potential for it to be better than it was. If you notice, the guys who were tackling either Onterio or me were in the secondary. I guess it’s a pretty good sign we can get on those guys. We just have to be able to make them miss and go all the way. With the Wildcat, I think we’re just scratching the surface."

  10. Ehyou,

Wouldn't it be incredible if a roving band of HABOTNistas secretly assembled on Saturday like a crack squad of commmados -- or maybe like a squad going commando on crack -- and wreaked havoc wherever they went?

    Would that be cool?

  16. Scottie B was at least nice enough to offer to help clean up the site. Somehow I think I will get no such civilities from the HABOTN Marauders.

  55. Let me guess Sensi is very low key and not as optimistic but Eddie is optimistic about the teams future?

    ReplyDelete

Not really, RK. We were both impressed and excited on Saturday.

We just have different thoughts about this week.

    Tune and enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  57. you can see said video.... "HERE"

    ReplyDelete
  58. Steve, that Fox programming note was provided by Auburn.

I hope you're right (for your sake) about the game being on Fox Sports Carolina. Auburn doesn't miss this programming stuff very often.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I haven't really liked the pregame video since about 2005 or so. 2004 was the best. I remember being like "Wow, that was awesome" when they showed it early in the season, before we even knwe we were good.

So basically, we are as good as our pregame warm up video, and this new one is just pretty good but not great, so I estimate 7 or 8 wins.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anonymous4:00 PM

My friend Kevin Strickland has a good read about Auburn's victory. Check it out if you get the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I am unbelievably jealous of those of who will be in Auburn on Sat. It's been too long.

At least I have the Lowcountry Auburn club kickoff party to look forward to - should be about 40 other folks there. I hope FAH continues to translate well through the TV.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The "In 2004 Auburn Will Rise" video will always be the best.

I remember getting chills watching that before the LaMonroe game. It was a perfect early statement when put with how we crashed and burned in 2003.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonymous4:08 PM

Surely folks aren't changing their predictions after only one encouraging game?

I'm gonna follow the lead of Todd and Tate.... and just breathe a little easier for now.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous4:09 PM

My predictions remain the same, Hoopie. But some questions were answered - partially and others remain open for review.

One game is one game. But at least we have a game to talk about now.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I remain unrealistically optimistic and we will crush MSU 45-6, causing MSU fans to rise up in protest and insist that the need Sylvester Croom back.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Anonymous4:15 PM

Pour me some of that, Steve. It sounds like it'd be fun to be on that side.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm with Steve. Must be something in the Carolina air.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anonymous4:22 PM

A little Ryan Adams for Lowcountry and Steve.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Sensi, thanks for the excellent Strickland article. It is amazing how similar the scores in the last two openers were, while the feeling we got from them is totally different.

It just goes to show you can't really judge a performance solely on the point spread. Against LaMo, we won, but without the sustained drives. Against LaTech, it was as if they were grasping at straws to try to stop us.

One of the ways I judge a performance is by the number of first downs. If I remember correctly, we had 29 versus LaTech's 19. That is a much better indicator of how the game went. When you dominate in terms of number of first downs you win, unless you are playing a Steve Spurrier team in the 90s.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Nice choice with the Ryan Adams.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anonymous4:38 PM

    Fan of the RA, RK?

    Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  72. A big difference in the openers from the past two years is how we scored.

Last year it was a punt return and a defensive TD, and really only two sustained drives the whole game and we looked confused trying to do anything.

This year it a long play, long drives and offensive TD's.

I do disagree with the article that the fumble to start the 2nd half would have been huge to the team last year in the opener, it was too early for that to kill us.

However if we had played this game with La Tech in October or November of last year and it was 13-10 and we fumbled, they win the game.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Sensi,

Yeah. Personally I think he's a DB (not defensive back either), however I do like his songwriting and his music.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I was a Ryan Adams fan back when Whiskeytown came out.

    ReplyDelete
  75. We're getting the Miss St game on Dish Network because we ordered Game Plan.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous4:47 PM

Same here on both counts, RK.

Crazy was a favorite Whiskeytown song.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Mon,

I have dish network and it's showing up as being on ch. 420 (Fox Sportssouth)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Sensi,

I've been trying to find the out of print Whiskeytown EP "Rural Free Delivery" for a long time now. Amazon has it used, but I'm not paying $35 for a CD. I have their other three albums.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Discovered Whiskeytown for the first time a couple of years back. "Everything I Do" appeared on an episode of Friday Night Lights during the first season and I was kind of hooked. I knew it sounded like RA, but didn't know he fronted a band before going solo.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Anonymous4:53 PM

RK, I may have a connection for that. I'll ask.

    ReplyDelete
  81. 420 is Fox Sports Ohio here

We're getting it on 441 an HD Alternate channel. At least it's in HD.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Cool, just let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Mon,

Sorry, didn't think about you being as north as you are.

    ReplyDelete
  84. There has to be an alarm that THT has that rings anytime we get near 88.

    ReplyDelete
  85. MSU's hope has to be that Anthony Dixon will make a serious contribution offensively. Against Jax State they did pretty much rely on the run, but Dixon is supposedly their most talented back.

Don't forget that Greg "Use to coach receivers" Knox has said that MSU has as good a set of runningbacks as he has been around. Apparently Ronnie, Caddy, Irons, and Rudy have some competition. Now we find out how big of an expert on runningbacks Knox really is.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I saw WhiskeyTown a couple of years ago here in Huntington. Once again our fantastic Public Radio production "Mountain Stage" brought them to town the same night we saw Brandi Carlile.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Ask, Q.Groves how talented Dixon is...He ran right by him while Groves was trying to get the QB sack record in the 2007 disaster vs Miss State.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Wow, if someone would just post player names for all the post numbers less than 100, we would really get rolling.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Actually, I follow Groves on twitter and that is probably the biggest mistake he made at Auburn. I don't have the testicles to bring it up.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Dixon is a good back. He and MSU are going down big time.

    ReplyDelete
  91. At least Groves was honest after the game that he had no idea what was being called from the sidelines because he just wanted the sack record.

It made sense since it was a 3rd and 15 that he should blitz.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Q tweets TOO much. I unfollowed him.

    ReplyDelete
  93. RK - There's a RFD on Ebay for $24.99 + $3 shipping.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  95. JGT - that's a lot of love for the keystone state.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Mon,

I look every now and then and that's just too much for a CD. I don't mind paying $15 or so, but I just can't justify a 8 song CD for $25+.

Some people are wanting $100 or more for it.

    ReplyDelete
  97. A couple of things from the last thread:

Jay, I can't believe you have never heard Octopus' Garden. I like it. Tell your wife Happy Birthday and thank her for sharing you with us.

For those in B'ham, The Auburn Tigers Everyday show is on Sat mornings at 10:30 am on Direct TV's ABC 33/40 (Direct Tv channel 33)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Well, Steelers are a good team, JayG. I think they are OK at 12.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  104. It's always something. Can't win.

12 is fair. The Big East is fairly underrepresented in the polls. Their teams aren't garnering a ton of respect.

It's all moot until midseason anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I true it says media cannot be played

    ReplyDelete
  107. MaYbe I should join the Habotn Mob. Sounfs like fun.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Cincy will end up being the best team in the Big East this year. That is my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I want to get my son-in-law an iPod for Christmas. Any advice between the new 16gb Nano with video or the 8gb Touch?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Cincy- definitely the touch. It has video also and a lot better screen than the nano.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Eddie,
Go with the touch even if I can only afford the 8 gb?

    ReplyDelete
  112. I would check out the Microsoft Zune's Cincy, I was given a Zune when my Ipod crapped out on me. I have had zero problems with it, and the interface is pretty easy to use. The biggest advantage of it for me over the ipod is the subscription service the Zune service offers. I pay $15/month for unlimited music, compared to a buck/song with Itunes. I don't know if he listens to alot of music but if he does it is a much cheaper option.

There is a Zune HD coming out before Christmas, it is supposed to be comparable to a Ipod touch.

    Definitely worth checking out.

I was having some fun on a message board today in a thread where we post goofy rumors and stuff. None of it is meant to be true; it's all very tongue and cheek.

I posted: Word on the skreets is Greg Knox was spotted on the MSU sideline actually coaching last week.

The Prowler responded with: Well, that'll just free up another LBer, because he won't have to worry about the RB catching the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  114. What the mother$*(^*&$^ O$&()*$# do you mean you can't win. You have a fan club, you singlehandedly carry your organization, and you have a wifey that plays rock band with you. You're living the life of a golden god. Chin up and fist down.

On the other hand, Nobody's ever heard of AllenD, and nobody ever will. Somoans are girl scout cookies, not famous people.

Re: The Poll: I'm just happy you dropped Iowa to 25 (though, I still think out is where they belong. A team that barely wins because a 1-AA team beats itself with chip shot field goals isn't better than 95 other teams). I'm okay with your poll. Plus, you have Bama lower than 86% of the voters. That's a win in my book! (I'd keep that stat to yourself, though, lest people start accusing you of being an Auburn fan again:-) ).

    ReplyDelete
  117. Cincy- That depends on how much Video you want on the ipod, if it will be loaded with mainly music, the 8gb would be fine, but if mainly video, then 16gb would be ideal, but the Nano is not ideal for watching video. I have the 8gb 3G Iphone which is very smiliar to the touch and it has all that I will ever need.

  133. RK - That's pretty crazy about the Whiskeytown CD. I read a little about it and it seems they are hard to find. Not sure if you're going to find one for $15 now that they've become a hot commodity, but I hope you do! I'll keep my eyes open. I only have one of their CD's and sadly it's not that one.

  134. Cincy: Though MonD apparently has the best mp3 player in the universe, my first-generation iPod nano has been with me every day since November 2005. Never had a problem. I work out with it, run with it, play basketball with it, I sledded with it, I blogged with it, walked along beaches on both coasts with it.

It's a question of what your recipient wants: Something to use at home or something to in with an active part of his/her life.

  135. So Goldberg said Eric Smith will play Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I'd trust Goldberg on that.

I'm not at Auburn to confirm.

  137. I will be in AU again this weekend. I will be visiting the sites of those posted on the map. I will bring my on beverage, like any of us should, and just visit everyone to see what you guys are up to. I would like to put a face with several of you.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Thanks for all the advice on the iPod. I will get my daughter to do a little sleuthing and see what purposes he has in mind. I'm thinking he wants to be able to use it when he works out.

    ReplyDelete
  139. The most impressive thing about the first game had nothing to do with passing or running. The impressive thing about the first game was how few mistakes we made offensively. Last season we looked the opponent square in the eye and shot ourselves in the foot. The worst part was we did it over and over again. Barney Fyffe would be proud. The most impressive thing about the first game was that a team that looked like it didn't know what it was doing all of last season looked prepared. Regardless of our record this season, ChizCo is a success in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Taylor also said his receivers didn't miss an assignment on running routes or blocking.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Cincy- I have an ishuffle and itouch. The shuffle is the one I run, workout with. I have used the touch while working out and it just seemed too bulky. Touch also has contacts, calender and internet access, so it has that going for it.

  142. Is this weekend a sellout? I hear there are RVs rolling in now.

Evidently Coach Chizik feels the OMac hype is premature. According to Andrew Gribble coach CGC stated the following in his SEC Teleinterview today.

“People can jump to a lot of conclusions with one football game. We don’t know what he is yet. He had one good football game and there was a lot of other people responsible for his success other than him. That was one game out of the box. We’ve blinked and moved on. He’s got to continue to just be a better football player. As the season goes on, whether he has earned the right to handle the ball more remains to be seen. If he does earn that right, can he do it? Well, that remains to be seen, too.

“So we’re kind of in a feeling out process, too. We’re not going to put a whole lot of stock into a guy that rushes for 110-some odd yards one time. If you do it six or seven times in a row, now you’ve got our attention.“

  144. One game does not a season make.
But I was impresssed by the movement of the ball and the smooth way the team went about it's business. I also was very impressed with the adjustments made during half time. The continuation of the offense during the whole second half. No sitting or squating on the ball after we got the 23-13 lead.

Sounds like a challenge to me. Will FAH step up to it? 6 or 7 100+ games would be nice.

  146. Hoopie- Chiz himself is very high on McCaleb, I have it from good authority.

  147. you're an asshat

  148. I so hope that was directed at me.

Kathy ... don't know if it is a sell out but we carried the motorhome over today (can't go in until 4 PM on Wednesdays in the hay fields) We pulled in at about 4:05 and there were already several there ... but I don't believe there were as many as there was last Wednesday. When we left it was probably half full of RVs

    ReplyDelete
  150. which post, mon? I did something wrong again, didn't I?

    ReplyDelete
  151. i know you do -you're a bigger attention whore than I am and that's saying something

365 - Where do you live? I used to get such a kick and thrill out of it when the RV's started showing up on campus on Wed. when I was in school

No Peter you've been alarmingly well behaved and entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Jay G, you take a break from band practice to watch any of the footey match against the islands of Trinidad and Tobago?

Does that win guarantee the US a spot in the World Cup?

    ReplyDelete
  153. I used to walk down Biggio on my way to class and would love how the RVs would start lining the street on Wednesday. Same peeps every week. I really should have taken the time to meet some of them, but was always too "busy." I bet they had great stories.

  154. Mon,

I'll work on that. Don't want to stain my rep, you know.

Wait, I called Steve the illigitimate offspring of Paul Obnoxiousbaum and a Care Bare. That wasn't nice. Give me some credit here. ;-)

  155. I don't see anything wrong with that, Peter.

  156. fuji apples dipped in hummus is yummy

    ReplyDelete
  157. I think the apples are great, but hummus is boring. I've never had the two together, so maybe it balances out to something good.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Somehow, I feel like i have been wronged.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I love red pepper hummus. In fact I am having that at the tailgate this week.

    ReplyDelete
  160. mmmmm yummy Cincy - something else for me to be jealous about!

  161. Speaking of @$$hats, I was driving from Bham to the Gump this afternoon following a meeting at a company my agency regulates, there were aforementioned @$$chapeaus in Kia hatchback which was being operated in a reckless fashion.

I finally figured out why. The @$$fez in the back seat was mooning everyone, and his @$$beret buddies were so tickled by it that the auto was swerving as they yukked it up.

  162. CIncy-my daughter got me hooked on hummus. I use the crusty bread with it. Can't eat much though, while trying to get to my orginal weight.

    7.4 lbs.

  164. Red pepper hummas and corn hole? Wow, I had better get a copy of THT's map and head to Auburn

Eddie...so according to your source, CGC is very high on Omac. Why then do you think CGC made that statement?

BTW, I never said that CGC wasn't high on Omac...I didn't refer to the coaches opinion on Omac at all.

I read his statement as: Omac has a lot of work to do before the FANS should expect something special. I think that CGC is trying to calm down the fans.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Hoopie ...

CGC is trying to prevent invalid positive speculation.

    ReplyDelete
  167. don't forget the declarative statements

Jet....you'll need to take that up with the coach.

  169. The Miss State game, I didnt exactly see the AU game in entirety Saturday

  170. I got a notice that my cornhole bags would be delivered tomorrow. I am a little concerned though because the email said my RED and navy blue bags would be delivered Thursday. In response to my panicked email the sender assured me he sent ORANGE. I am going to be one mad woman if they sent red.

  171. Anonymous9:31 PM

Fox Sports So is featuring AU right now.

  172. I read where Hugh Hefner filed for divorce from his estranged wife....

My question: Why would Hefer EVER get married in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
  173. But Cincy, the red bags will go well with the red pepper hummas.

  176. ESPN article on TOP 25 Recruiters

    Trooper Taylor, Auburn
The top recruiter on what is a very good recruiting staff, Taylor first started gaining notoriety during the Class of 2005, when he helped Phillip Fulmer and Tennessee assemble an outstanding recruiting class. Thus far at Auburn, Taylor has helped to introduce several outside-of-the-box ideas like the "Big Cat Recruiting Weekend" that took place in the spring. Atlanta is a very important area for Auburn (parts of the metro area are less than an hour from the campus) and Taylor landed his first major commitment from the area in Under Armour All-American Antonio Goodwin (Booker T. Washington). Give Taylor credit with making a strong evaluation on Goodwin, who didn't have the buzz of other players, but is a four-star-rated prospect and the No. 23 overall prospect in the country.

    It's always something. Can't win

Aw shucks JGT, thicker skin than that on picks that are public. You could have come back with Pitt beat a tough Youngstown State team that was coming off a 4 win 2008 (uh, nevermind), or how about Pitt freshman was the leading rusher with 129 yards, the most for a frosh in an opener since Dorsett did it in 1975...sounds like our frosh...

All is good, I simply noticed you ranked both Pitt and PSU above the majority of your peers.

PS - Is ESPN/ABC disproportionately represented among the AP voters? I guess they do watch the games...

  178. IV,
    Red will never do!

    ReplyDelete
  179. Got ya Hoopie. Coosa=nice guy, not like me. We go back a long way. Started Auburn together, worked with the Highway Department together. We kind of split paths in 1961 when I moved to the Gump. I saw him at our 40th HS reunion in 1997 but missed him at our 50th in 2007. You know that you are old when you start talking about having a 50th reunion.

  180. Cincy,
Is that avatar picture you? If it is, what frightened you?

    ReplyDelete
  181. That is a picture someone snapped as I walked into my surprise 50th birthday party last week. I was truly and thoroughly surprised, as evidenced by that terrible picture!

    ReplyDelete
  182. I am going to be a little cautious on this game and pick it AU 21, MSU 13. I think that we should be aware of over optimism.

    ReplyDelete
  183. But over optimism is so much fun. I am picking 35-10.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Cincy, Catching people in a picture when they are just being themselves is never a horrible picture. I think that you like very nice. I thought maybe you had been frightened by a missed CH toss.

IV and I are in the same camp.

    Auburn 24, MSU 21.

    ReplyDelete
  186. After all, you thought enough of the picture to share it with us.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Sensi, that's far too close for my liking.
