BLOGGIN FOR YOUR NOGGIN: Gene Chizik speaks

Hey everyone. Auburn head coach Gene Chizik is discussing the Tigers at his weekly press conference.

  • ``It's going to be a fun week for us, an exciting week for us."

  • ``This is a vert good Tennessee football team and we all know how tough it is to play at Tennessee."

  • On this being new: ``I don't think there's anyone on the football team who has played at Tennessee. We're not going to change anything. We're not going to change how we prepare. There's really not much that you do to change what you've done the previous four games. We feel like communication will be the issue -- whether its hand signals. Our guys are used to that. It'll be fun for them."

  • On Eric Berry: ``You're always cognizant of where he is. He can take a guy out of the game. You've got to make provisions for that. We'll always know where he is. He's that good of a player. He can dominate a game."

  • On Trooper Taylor (former UT assistant): ``He coaches them really, really well. I've known Trooper for a long time. I knew what kind of a person he was. He's been great for our football team. He's been great for our receivers. He's done a great job and he's a great person."

  • On him getting up for Tennessee: "You get to the level where you can't crank it up anymore. I don't know if he can get more excited."

  • He has a lot of respect for UT defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. "He brings a lot to the table."

  • On the possibility of changing things with the punt-return unit: ``We're open-minded with some thoughts of different guys. But we have to keep working the guys we've invested so much time in. We can't kick those guys to the curb and make wholesale changes."

  • On getting national relevance: ``We've got to win. The other stuff, it'll take care of itself."

  • On if he's getting more terse in special teams meetings: "We're coaching like we always coach. We're very demanding and precise. We've got to play better and coach better."

  • On similarities of how Auburn and Tennessee are built from a staff standpoint: ``Guys make a lot of money to be good coaches, to be good recruiters and treat these kids right. That's our deal. The guys I've got here, I want them to coach my 9-year-old son. They've got to contribute with the xs and os. When you make the whole cake and you leave out one ingredient, it doesn't taste very good."

  • On Monte Kiffin: (Chizik spoke with Kiffin during his days at UCF ... prior to being Auburn DC in 2002) ``Monte was very good to me. He was very kind, very good with me."

  • ``We've had kind of a whole different bunch of scenarios we've been through and we're 4-0. That's against some good teams. We're still feeling each other out, still learning them. There's still a lot of things we'll have to get through together. I'm proud of the way they've continued to play -- even when it wasn't good."

  • On Chris Todd: ``We felt like, with what we saw and knowing he didn't go through spring practce, Chris could be a very good player in this offense. He's done some things that we expected him to do. When you look at the touchdown passes and all that -- there was a lot of work done by a lot of guys. Some of them were two-yard passes. You still have to make the throw. The thing I like about Chris is that he hasn't made a lot of bad decisions."

  • On Burns and McCalebb: ``We don't know where they're at right now. It's day by day."

  • On what a win at UT would mean: ``Going to Tennessee, to play there, will be a huge indicator of what we are. That's not just for this week -- that's for the whole year. It's going to be an adventure. If you do well and win the game, it gets you over a hurdle. If you can go to a place like Tennessee and you can get a win there, it reveals more about your team. It would catapult us into October in a good way."

  • He said Byron Isom is practicing.

  • THAT'S A WRAP.

  1. The emails keep coming:

    "Mr Tate,

I wonder if you could answer a question for me, in this week’s AP Poll you have voted Penn State #11 and Iowa #22 after Iowa went in to Happy Valley and dominated the Nittany Lions.

What is your rationale for this?"

    ReplyDelete
  2. Fight the power!!! I had a feeling you may get a few over that one but its not like it's the last week of the season and Iowa could very well have multiple losses while Penn State has just one. It crazy for anyone to email about this, especially at this point in the season.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think it is good for fans to take notice of your voting and if they disagree why not spend a nickle and let you know.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I told him my reasoning: Because I think Penn State is better.

    That wasn't enough, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It's one thing to ask for the reasoning, it's another to attack. I'm sure you have probably gotten some emails that were not G rated if I had to guess.

    ReplyDelete
  6. They need to chance something on the special teams

    ReplyDelete
  7. Trooper getting much love by Chizik today!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Any truth to the rumor that Chizik spent a lot of time with Monte Kiffen learning the Tampa 2 defense while he was DC at UCF???

Jay G- You should step up and be the Punt Returner.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think Mr Ik is seeking attention. That's the only reason I can think of to say the same inane thing over and over again.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jay G springing the big vocab on Chizik, he needed a definition.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree with that coach better and play beter

    ReplyDelete
  12. If Trooper gets any higher they will have to tie an anvil to his butt to keep him in the stadium

    ReplyDelete
  13. I bring a lot to the table.

  16. A response to questions on poll rankings. How can a team ranked lower be the favorite in a game? It happens all the time.

It is pretty simple. Rankings don't indicate how good teams do in a head to head match up. Rankings are how good a team is relative to everyone else, not just each other.

And another little diddy that might just blow someone's brain. If two teams play more than once, the same team doesn't always win!!! Winning a game against another team doesn't necessarily mean you are better than they are. Incredible, yet true.

    ReplyDelete
  17. By the way, Lane Kiffin has said his daddy spent a lot of time over the summer studying the Gus offense.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Which do you think Monte spent more time on, stopping Auburn or stopping Florida? I know where I would bet. Sorry, I don't but that Monte felt that we were going to be the offensive threat that we are right now especially with the existing personnel that Daddy would have known us to have this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  19. should be buy instead of but.

Also, what QB did Monte think we were going to be going with this summer?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sorry, but I just don't fear Monte Kiffikin. As a rule, I don't fear any guy named Monte.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Do you fear a guy named after Lane Bryant?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Did I hear day by day nawww!

    ReplyDelete
  23. So does Chizik feel like this Tennessee game can be the same spring board that the 2004 Tennessee game was???? Sounds like he sort of believes that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thats good news on Ison

    ReplyDelete
  25. Practicing and playing are different, just wonder what that difference is.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'll take that question Eddie.

Chizik feels that UT is a great team and that we will have to play better than we have in the past to beat them.
Chizik feels we must take things one game at a time and Chizik doesn't look to the future.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lunch time on the banks of the Coosa River....no fish just meatloaf.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really do wonder how Trooper will feel being on the "other side" in Neyland Stadium having coached there before.

Will he get our guys "jacked up" to an emotional high that plays out in sound football??

I just hope this team can stay focused on the job at hand. I hope they will not be over come by the first out of town game experience, the big crowd, and the big noise.

    ReplyDelete
  29. missinit- Let me flip it to something more recent, wonder how Eddie Gran will feel?

    ReplyDelete
  30. From what I have seen from Trooper, he could get our team pumped up for a trip to the dentist.

    ReplyDelete
  31. large pic on the front of the knoxville sports page today of Trooper at Tiger Walk.

    NO DROPS!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I trust that Monte Kiffin will have a solid plan for us. It won't be easy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ah..... yes Eddie, I do wonder what is going on in his head? Is he telling all our little old secrets???

Wait a minute, we don't have any old secrets.....but I sure hope we have a few new ones!!

I just know that Trooper was well liked among the UT fans and he is such a eye catcher on the sidelines.

Good inspiration and good coaching....I'll take one of each please!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Knox wasn't a problem. I don't think Gran will be.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have no doubts RK. I just think it foolish to believe that he was concerned more by Auburn this summer than he was any other team. Monte is a pro, period. He will have them ready to play.

    ReplyDelete
  36. And Trooper won't be anymore jacked up this week than he normally is, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't think we were his main focus, but possibly we were a big focus.

The thing that has me worried is they are in a must win situation to save a decent season.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree RK. I imagine that in the off season the coaches evaluate every team they will play, although I am sure they spend more time on some than others. For instance, Furman was probably good for a 30 minute talk over lunch at Taco Bell.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Monte Kiffin fears Malzahn.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Monte would shoot someone for venturing into his yard with their lawnmower.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ikarl67, Jay gets paid to write. How much are you offering to pay him for this?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Looking for blog traffic is a hoot? Nobody cares about Penn State or Iowa here. This is SEC country. We are big time college football and are not into teams from a second rate conference.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ikarl67- Are you freakin kidding me??? Give it up dude. Your act is tiresome here. Don't come to an "AUBURN" Blog and start this crap about rankings. We don't want to hear it. Come talk to us if you go undefeated and don't get your shot, then maybe I'll have a little bit of sympathy, but at week 5 of the season, shut your pie hole.

    ReplyDelete
  44. this is UT week.

ikarl67/salsa/monica/some dick with too much time on your hands,

Please lay off the personal attacks of Jay G. This site is FREE! The content is appreciated! Do I agree with how he votes in the poll? Not always, but his vote is his opinion which is what all of the AP voters are doing.

    Give it a rest.

P.S. Does that corncob hurt when it's shoved that far up?

    ReplyDelete
  46. iKarl, please explain your bizaree reasoning and why you feel Jay would care about you, Penn State, or Iowa. Penn State appears to be the better team as they showed last season.

OOhh, how can I say that? That can't be true. Iowa beat Penn State last season? Ummm, who played in the Rose Bowl? Next idiot please. Serving #102,323,444. Please come forward.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous12:45 PM

P.S. Big 10/11 teams are SLOOOOW

    ReplyDelete
  48. Frankly, I don't get the Iowa/PSU ranking either, especially for the poll following Iowa's win. If you're not using the results on the field as an indicator of a team's quality, then what are you supposed to use? If later in the season Iowa loses out while Penn St. continues to win, then they would no doubt regain their ranking, but right now? It just doesn't make any sense.

I think we as Auburn fans should be a little more sensitive to this kind of thing, since we've been burned by it before. I think it also continues to expose the fallacy of polling, in general. There is no consistency on the method pollsters use to determine their rankings. I suppose that the aggregate score is supposed to mitigate some of it, but there are some wildly divergent methods out there.

The hate mail Jay's receiving also illustrates just how powerful online data warehousing has become. Don't like your ranking? It takes less than five minutes to hit Pollstalker, find a scapegoat, and fire off a strongly-worded email. Simply amazing what technology is capable of these days, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I bet people love having their vote made public so jackholes like this can contact them because they have nothing better to do.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just because Iowa beat Penn State in one game doesn't mean they deserve to be ranked higher than Penn State in a poll that is relative to all teams.

Iowa State beat Penn State last season. Does that mean they were the better team? Obviously not.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Anonymous12:52 PM

Technology will kill us all according to James Cameron's vision.

    ReplyDelete
  52. "Just because Iowa beat Penn State in one game doesn't mean they deserve to be ranked higher than Penn State in a poll that is relative to all teams."

Let's keep that in mind if later this year we beat a higher ranked LSU, Georgia, or Alabama team and still wind up with a lower ranking.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Steve- Iowa State did not beat Penn State, it was again Iowa.

    ReplyDelete
  54. From a post a little earlier....I agree with you Eddie, I don't think Trooper will be any higher than usual this week...he's always up there.

It does seem that UT may be using him as a poster child of sorts to help rev up the situation. I've noticed that his name has been prevalent in many of the UT articles this week and just today one of the hotties, WERK (maybe?), posted about a pic of Trooper at Tiger Walk on one of the sports pages in Vol land.

Guess they are just stirring the pot!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm starting to hate poll talk as much as I hate recruiting talk.

    ReplyDelete
  56. You mean there is a difference between Iowa and Iowa State?

    ReplyDelete
  57. "another victim of Southern education"

    Nice, thanks for dropping by.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Unless you are a serious contender for the BCS Championship, then rankings don't mean squat. Iowa beat Penn State but struggled and should have lost to Northern Iowa this season. Maybe both Iowa and Penn State are overranked? That would be my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ikarl67, please stop refusing to address the questions.

How did Penn State go to the Rose Bowl last season when Iowa was obviously better because they beat them?

How can a team ranked lower be favored to beat a team that is ranked higher?

Please show some sign of intelligent life.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sorry about those messages, peeps. I was at lunch.

I like how my feelings about Penn State are a function of my "Southern education."

    Huh?

    ReplyDelete
  61. "You mean there is a difference between Iowa and Iowa State?"

    Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Jay, it has been a hoot. Don't worry about it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. missinit- Trooper was a beloved figure at UT just like he is here at Auburn. Many thought he should have been named the OC a couple of years ago and that things might have been different if he had been. I think that is where all the pub is coming from.

    ReplyDelete
  64. It is nice to see the Tennessee folks still love Troop, even after he left.

    ReplyDelete
  65. It might be simpler to simply remove Iowa from your ballot from now on. That way there is no way you could put them in the wrong place.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Eddie,
They're still skeeved that he left for Okie St., aren't they?

    ReplyDelete
  67. yup, they still like Troop up here. no diggity, no doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  68. "REMAIN CALM! ALL IS WELL!"

    ReplyDelete
  69. glad Norm's here. we need to good old fashioned hate injected bro.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Personally, I don't get too upset about coaches leaving. They are just like the rest of us and trying to advance their careers. Yea, I thought Willis going to the evil empire was wrong, but in general I have no problem with coaching moves.

    ReplyDelete
  71. weagle- I think just the opposite, they all blamed Fulmer for allowing him to leave without promoting him.

    ReplyDelete
  72. weagle251, you obviously didn't get the sarcasm in comparing Iowa with Iowa State.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Steve: I hope the rest of the pollsters don't follow your logic about using last season's performance and results to justify this season's rankings. Me no likey ... Auburn no likey.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hahahaha, the poll is purely speculative.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's OK for them to email me. I answer them and talk with them. All of them.

But to come here and cause a spectacle is silly. You all aren't the ones voting. You don't need to hear this stuff. It's not your fight.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Comm'r of Flesh Wounds, your post is a bit bizarre. I never said that this years poll should be based upon last years poll. I illustrated how the team that wins one game is not necessarily the better team. That appears to have gone over your head.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think Chizik should start answering questions in the third person as "The Chiz," e.g.,

Coach Chizik, how will you plan for S Eric Berry this week?"

A: "The Chiz respects Eric Berry. The Chiz will will account for Eric Berry in all phases of the game. The Chiz overlooks no one. Next question for the Chiz?"

    ReplyDelete
  78. The polls as run today are no more than beauty contest. So some think Penn State is prettier than Iowa. And like the voting in polls, where most of the voters haven't even seen half the teams, maybe those who think Penn State is prettier have never been to Iowa.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It is pretty off topic, although the polls in general are on topic.

Here is a purely non-speculative poll.

The ignorant belief that polls indicate which team would beat another team is a common misconception. Teams match up differently.

By the way, it is pure irony the team that is ranked number one in that link:)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Comm'r, I love the Chiz speak. It reminds me of a Seinfeld episode.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Steve:

Easy on the ad hominem attacks. And if you're going to go on the offensive, at least get some new material. You've used the same word ("bizarre") in at least two separate (angry) diatribes.

Let's be careful (and creative) out there, posters.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Steve,
Doh! My Sarcasm Filter(TM) fails again!

Oh well... back to the drawing board.

    ReplyDelete
  83. where's Harrison?

    STAY CLASSY SAN DIEGO.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I am not sure why bizarre bothers you. Try weird.

As for angry, I am not sure what you are talking about. I have been laughing my butt off.

    ReplyDelete
  85. crap, we missed the Beasley post.

    ReplyDelete
  86. And to think that someone from Iowa would use corn in an attack is another thing that tickles me. That is some true ironic irony there.

    ReplyDelete
  87. SteveFC - in my mind, I imagine that as an evil, mad scientist, maniacal type of laughter you have going on there.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Now that poll would really cause a stir if widely published, but ike would love it.

    ReplyDelete
  89. "The Chiz is always classy. The Chiz is not bizzare (or weird)."
    - The Chiz

    ReplyDelete
  90. Scottie- THT and myself hold you accountable for this lack for respect regarding the Beasley post. This action will have future consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  91. ah I missed it, I wasn't here to give that dude heck

    ReplyDelete
  92. Eddie, i hang my head in utter shame as i type. :(

Jhag, did you go to FSU last weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Jay has obviously shown he is a biased voter by where he has ranked Auburn. I am sure he will have Transylvania in his top 10 by the end of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I see the "new material" admonition is applicable to others, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Nope it fell thru...I am going next weekend Oct 9th for the Ga Tech game weekend festivities

    ReplyDelete
  96. FYI: I HAVE SEVERAL HABOTN CAPS STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. ADJUSTABLE & TRUCKER.

    ReplyDelete
  97. jhag, it was prety funny. It was basically just a kid with nothing to say and a lot of time to say it. We did get some good corn info.

    ReplyDelete
  98. good. i thought about you during that game Jhag. yikes! my sister was able to avoid it too.

    ReplyDelete
  99. A corn cob even placed in a strategic openning will not shut an Iowa fan up.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Ah, Explosions In The Sky's "First Breath After Coma" playing on my Pandora right now. I'm ready for Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  101. In my opinion, people in Iowa get way to emotionally involved with corn.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Coming from someone who has one: HABOTN caps are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I second that emotion. My HABOTN hat is also pretty comfortable compared to my many other hats.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yeah, the mystery of why FSU is so inconsistent is probaly a direct corrolation to Bowden

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  110. Scottieb - you have quite a few jerseys don't you.

    ReplyDelete
  111. To me it was fun, reminds me of the 50's some would say I love Ike and others I hate Ike.

    ReplyDelete
  112. No it was I LIKE IKE WOW I am getting senile

    ReplyDelete
  113. I have my HABOTN cap as well and it is top notch.

It increased my level of coolness by about 125%. I'm pretty low on the scale without it.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  124. Eddie,

Nice write up, but I believe you meant Gerald Jones and not Greg Jones.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Just L-I-V-I-N.

    Ok, I'll stop now.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Unless provoked.

    ReplyDelete
  127. In a high school english class, we had a poetry writing contest one time. Whoever won became the poet laureate of the class. I clearly had the best poem, yet when it came time to vote, I lost because of a bunch of moron pollsters (classmates) who didn't understand how awesome my poem was. I refused to recognize the crowned poet laureate (who was a nice girl, but not the poet I was) and crowned myself The People's Laureate.

Anyway, if Iowa started referring to themselves as The People's #11 instead of acknowledging they are Jay G's #22, they would feel a lot better about themselves. But deep down, they would still hurt and feel so cold. And alone.

    ReplyDelete
  128. So even though your vote ballot is public, your defense of it is not?
BTW, I am not alleging BIAS, I am alleging either :
    A) Ignorance
    or
    B) Ulterior motives (i.e. driving traffic to your blog)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Michael, how had your previous poems matched up? Did you come into the season unranked, or were you a top ten poet?

    ReplyDelete
  130. Steve, I think what cost me was the style of play I had with my poetry. There was a lot of rhyming and humor, and that is not what the pollsters go for. They want the sexy poem with ambiguous metaphors.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I would be the New Mexico State of poets in that cae

    ReplyDelete
  132. better than being the Western Kentucky Harrison.

    ReplyDelete
  133. ikarl67, this is an Auburn blog. The idea of drafting traffic to this blog seems terribly silly.

As for ignorance, I must admit you appear familiar with the subject, but get real. Buy a clue. Iowa didn't dominate Penn State and Iowa will do their typical flop and end up playing in a nobody has heard of bowl against a team which will likely be better in basketball.

Move on. Get over it. Isn't there some corn you should be picking about now?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Traffic to my blog?

That's laughable. Like I care about that?

    ReplyDelete
  135. So Harrison, you are saying you are incapable of making really successful poems, but you do have the ability to ruin someone else's poem every once in awhile? That is a nice skill to have.

    ReplyDelete
  136. His visual acuity is based on movement. If we don't move, he can't see us.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Karl - your theory of trying to promote traffic isn't holding up. You seem to be the only new idiot here. The rest of us are regulars. I'm pretty sure JGT isn't so insecure that he gets validation from hits on his blog.

    You're a tool. Give it a rest.

    Keep Hate Alive.

    ReplyDelete
  138. i sure would like to see ikarl's top 25. I'm sure every ranking would be logical and reasonable and in no way could be nit-picked

    ReplyDelete
  139. I get validation from hits on my blog. That is why I feel so inadequate.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Jay, don't you get some kind of commission on the number of Iowa comments you get on your blog?

    ReplyDelete
  141. correct Michael, I am nothing but a spoiler

    ReplyDelete
  142. Boxhead - I read your blog regularly. You'll find evidence of that in a reference I made in an earlier post today.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Can you give an example of a spoiler poem, Harrison? Would it be like this:

"Roses in the summertime, snow in the winter.
Cats lick the dew of morning's love.
An invasion of hearts occurs in the mist,
Cindy, your husband Jeff is cheating on you. Sorry you had to hear it this way."

    The End

    ReplyDelete
  144. What do we know, we're just a bunch of Southern educated people, right?

    ReplyDelete
  145. That's pretty good michael. I usuually physically ruin a poem, like knock the person's hand as they write or something

    ReplyDelete
  146. Michael, you have a knack for poetry. I must follow your blog more closely. Yes, I have been there before. I don't think I commented. I was only there to steal material for poems.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Norm, I appreciate your traffic. It puts food on the table. You and the 10 other hotties who frequent the blog are awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  148. We may all want to cut back our posting so that the flood of Iowa fans will get there say. Heck, nobody will ever come here anyways. It is too crowded.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Anonymous2:16 PM

Traffic was a pretty good band.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I am impressed michael. My blog on blogger has one follower and has had two posters. I have been thinking of making it a pay site, but I am waiting for that second follower.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Crosstown Traffic

    ReplyDelete
  152. I think trying to draw Steve Winwood, Dave Mason & Jim Capaldi to your blog is a good idea.

Traffic is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

If Jay G. could draw them in, they could do testimonials. Steve Winwood says "The HABOTN always brings me the Higher Love".

    ReplyDelete
  153. So since the traffic increased by one iKarlJung.

Jay G, drawing people to his blog one AP poll at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Did anyone ever ask, well who really gives a rip about Iowa?

Penn State had a bad game, it just so happens against Iowa. Penn State will most likely be in the Rose Bowl or Cap 1 Bowl at worst. Iowa will be trying to block field goals so they don't lose to N. Iowa.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Or, he might say "I'm a Man" thanks to HABOTN, Jay G. Tate and Norm.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Those vert good teams scare me.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Anonymous2:27 PM

Who has Iowa beat? I have no idea....cause I don't care.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Did anyone see Lane's press conference? He spent enough time saying how good we are? Is that coach-speak or do you think he really believes that?

    ReplyDelete
  159. What team will Jay go after this week. How about ranking Oregon ahead of Boise State. I have been itching to find out where Boise State is anyhow. I suspect it is one of those square states out west.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Anonymous2:29 PM

Coach speak....he did the same for FL remember?

    ReplyDelete
  161. How does one get their profile with a hotlink on the front page?

    ReplyDelete
  162. Got to be coach speak Sean because I'm not sure I believe it

    ReplyDelete
  163. Anonymous2:30 PM

    It is a conspiracy Steve.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Yeah they were beat by UF...even though the score was close, the game was not. UT never had a chance to win that game.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I still want to see ikarl's top 25.

    ReplyDelete
  166. iKarl, I am trying to care, but it just ain't happening. By any chance are all Iowa fans such whiners?

    ReplyDelete
  167. Hmmm, there has to be an FAH analogy here. That post deletion was faster than FAH.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Feel free to delete any of my posts referring to you know who, Jay. It would not offend me.

    ReplyDelete
  169. ikarl, with all due respect, it's fine that you have a beef with Jay G., but keep it between you and him. This isn't the place. This is an Auburn blog, not an AP Poll blog. Your doing yourself no favors by alienating yourself from not just Jay G. himself, but the rest of us Southern educated people. What did you mean by that anyway (rhetorical question, don't answer)?

    ReplyDelete
  170. Let's have a quick recap of who the AP polls directly effect:

    - Chooses the National Champion at the END of the season
    - Affects coaches with escalators in their contract influenced by ranking at the END of the season
(maybe there are other effects, but these are the only ones I can think of at the moment)

Indirect effects (assuming the Harris Poll and to a lesser extent the coaches poll look at the AP poll for guidance at times):

    - At the END of the regular season, picks the two teams playing for the national championship (worst case scenario: 5 or so teams have a legitimate claim to play the game)
    - At the END of the regular season, influences the "last teams in" to make the BCS (maybe there is one spot that 3 teams legitimately want)

So: Jay G's vote really only directly screws your college football team if he doesn't vote them as the national champion at the end of the season and you think they deserve it. His voting may indirectly keep your team out of the BCS or national championship game. Maybe there is one team a year that really feels they get screwed hard in one of those situations by the pollsters.

So as a a pro-Iowa person, here after week 4, how much sense does it make to be freaking out about being ranked below Penn State? Is the likelihood of you being screwed by this week 4 poll so great that you want to personally contact pollsters and demand an explanation for how they voted the way they did? That is ridiculous. Chill out, enjoy football, and let the polls take care of themselves. They will almost certainly have no influence on your team. I agree that Iowa should be ranked above Penn St. Jay G doesn't. Who cares?

    That was long.

    ReplyDelete
  171. yep, keep winning games and i GUARANTEE you will move ahead of PSU and many others.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Anonymous2:38 PM

    Deep thoughts....by Michael

    ReplyDelete
  173. ^my last post also goes for Auburn fans freaking out about being unranked when so and so team is ranked high. If so and so team is as bad as you think they are, they will lose and the poll will take care of itself. Except for that one year...

    ReplyDelete
  174. especially in the rough and tumble (giggling) Big 10 (11)

    ReplyDelete
  175. And if Penn State is not that good, well then they will lose more and continue their way on down the rankings...it's only week 4 (5 depending on your perspective)!

    ReplyDelete
  176. Harrison...The Small 11? Is that what you meant to say?

    ReplyDelete
  177. I would encourage anyone that has an off topic subject that they would want to discuss to create their own blog and request anyone interested in the topic to go to that blog. Heck, Jay might even point anyone interested in the discussion of Penn State and that other team to go there. It seems silly to continue it here.

    ReplyDelete
  178. i could care less about Auburn not being ranked yet. keep winning, that's all that matters

    Good news for JGT

Gannett, the large McLean-based media company, saw its stock price jump 18% in mid-day trading on Tuesday after releasing better-than-expected earnings projections for the third quarter

    ReplyDelete
  180. Anonymous2:40 PM

And I guess ultimately the HABOTN

    ReplyDelete
  181. What's all this I hear about sax and violins on tv?

    ReplyDelete
  182. Hopefully that development doesn't make Gannett say "See! The furloughs are working!!! More furloughs, stat!"

    ReplyDelete
  183. In other news the Braves are only 2 games back, the Vol fans think they have the best defense this side of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens and it's getting dangerously close to quitting time in the EDT.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I heard about the GCI jump. Very exciting.

Furloughs are supposed to be back en vogue come January.

    ReplyDelete
  185. so who's goin to flip it? Norm, where you is?

    ReplyDelete
  186. Biding my time Sean. Biding my time.

    ReplyDelete
  187. I'd say it's bout that time...
