Chizik LIVE BLOG

Hey everyone. Welcome to the Athletic Complex, where coach Gene Chizik will be holding his weekly press conference.

  • He has arrived. Let's BLOG.

  • Opening statement: "We learned a lot out our football team last week. We have room for improvement in so many ways. We did some really good things everywhere. So much room for improvement. We've gone back to work, as of yesterday, preparing for a Mississippi State team with a lot of energy ... new energy. It's a team that plays with extremely high energy."

  • More advanced that expected: "I don't think so. There's just so many question marks we didn't know. We were hoping we be in this kind of area. We feel like we got a great starting point."

  • Similarities between Malzahn and Mullen: ``There are some similarities. They use two quarterbacks -- two different kinds of body types. There are a lot of similarities with what they did at Florida. Defensively, that's a little bit of an advantage for us because we see that every day."

  • ``We have to do what we do and do it better than we did the week before."

  • On if Auburn needs more than two tailbacks: "We're always in the market for more. The more, the merrier. You need two or three tailbacks, guys who can carry the ball, to get you through the year."

  • On the McCalebb/Tate combo: ``When you have two bakcs who are that different on one team ... the physicality of one back versus the guy with great speed ... the defense runs all over the place and they get tired. It puts pressure on them."

  • On Eric Smith: ``You're going to see him in a uniform this week. We're going to move on."

  • On McCalebb: ``Anytime you bring a guy in January, it's night and day. He needs to stay humble because he certainly hasn't arrived. He played like we expected him to play. He absolutely loves the game of football. He practices like that."

  • "We're not anywhere near satisfied with the rhythm and the tempo of our offense. It's got to be faster."

  • On the coaches: ``In your first game, you worry about substitutions. You worry about adjustments. That didn't happen Saturday night. Communication was almost seamless. It's as good as we could have expected for Game One."

  • On Eltoro Freeman: "We're hoping there will be a couple more guys back. We're playing that by ear. We can't play a guy who's 40 or 50 percent."

(I spoke briefly with Freeman last night and he said he's feeling a lot better. He hopes to play this weekend.)

  • Is McCalebb durable?: ``The bigger guys can run outside and inside. The litter guys can run inside and outside, too. They can both doth both. They both will. I don't know if they'll be durable enough. We're going to try to be a very physical offense and run the football."

  • On Antoine Carter: "We're playing that by ear, too."

  • THAT'S A WRAP.

Oh well, we just finished the old folks chat a few minutes ago. We had to cut it short tonight, some had to go to the bathroom. It was good to hear from the class of 1957, Albert G. Parrish High School, Selma, Alabama. There are a couple not doing so well. You just never know how fortunate you are until you hear someone else tell their side of the story. 1957, a very good year.

Steve and any one else that watched, if you're here, talk to me about the MSU spread offense and what they looked like on D. I understand it was Jackson State, but do you think they used their full playbook, or did they just pull away in the 2nd half because of JSU depth issues.

9:04 PM

I watched some of the first half, beginning of the second half. Jackson state is pretty bad, no real athletes. MSU didn't look good at all during the parts I watched. JSU was overmatched and finally tired out in second half, but I didn't see a lot of it. I don't see MSU as being any better than La Tech to be honest. They were missing their big tailback who will be back this week.

missinit, we think she caught it during their UAH sorority recruitment. I think a couple of the girls have also tested positive, but they tested positive for Influenzae A when they went to the doctor. My daughter tested negative to the short test, but her white blood count was 2.3 and she was very sick. The doctor went ahead and sent out the swab to test for swine flu. Those results take days to get back. In the meantime, he decided to test her blood for other abnormalities, so we've made 3 trips back to the doctor. Her swine flu results came back today and her WBC count is back up to 3.4. He wants her home until it gets back up to at least 4.0. She goes back to the doctor again Monday. The doctor and Google had me thinking the worse. I am definitely relieved.

Well things are slow here tonight, so it might be a good time for an Auburn memory. I was fortunate to have met Coach Jordan twice in my lifetime. I am going to tell about the first encounter. The night in 1957 that it was announced that Auburn was the AP National Champion, there was quite a celebration at Toomer's Corner as I am sure you can imagine. This was before I-85 was built and all of the through traffic such as New Orleans to Atlanta came right up College Street and Toomer's Corner. A large crowd gathered but no toilet paper. This was before the tradition of rolling the trees. I would bet that there was about as many folks there that night as a present day Toomer's Corner gathering, the only thing was Auburn had an enrollment of about 9,000 in those days. For awhile, 18 wheelers were unable to get through until the Auburn Police got bright and re-routed traffic off of College Street. It was interesting for a period of time as no 18 wheeler got by without the driver blowing his horn loud and strong and learning how to yell WAR EAGLE. There was even a Volkswagen that got picked up, occupants still inside and lifted over a post in the center of the walkway leading to the campus from Toomer's Corner. I don't know if that post is still there and I don't remember how the driver of the Volkswagen got out as he had been put down on the sidewalk that goes past the lathe and Samford Hall.

After celebrating for a good while, someone in the crowd got the idea of going to Coach Jordan's house to get him to speak to the crowd. So off we went. Some drove, but most went down the street singing and shouting WAR EAGLE. We got to Coach Jordan's house and his wife came to the door to see what all the commotion was about. Of course, we started to yell "we want Coach Jordan, we want Coach Jordan". He finally came to the door and I along with a guy I had no idea who was, lifted Coach Jordan up on our shoulders and carried him out to where most of the crowd was. We then put him down and he was very gracious in what he had to say, giving his players, assistant coaches and others all of the credit. That was the kind of man he was. When he got through speaking, I introduced myself and told him that I was from his hometown of Selma. This brought a big smile to his face and he was so glad that a fellow Selmian had been there to share in the celebration with him. He thanked me and asked how were things in our hometown. I told him alot better after Selma's favorite son had just coached Auburn to a National Championship. That is the kind of memory that I can never forget. Thanks Coach, I will never forget you. WAR EAGLE

Jet, let's meet up Saturday and crash a few sites. You can FB with a time and stuff. And print the map.

Last week i posted we score 40 and win by 28. Close but no cigar. This week we score 35 and win by 21 with over 500 total yards. After 1 week, Au is ranked 10th in the nation in total offense. Au will not fall far form that number and will probably climb to top 5 by game 5-6.

On the replay I heard the announcers say that Malzahn said when he got his players in the system, he would not substitute much. He wanted 11 players to play the majority of the game so they could pick the tempo up and when the defense had a package that he could exploit, he did not want to let the other coach to be able to swap out players.

10:06 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I heard that as well... I also heard Malzahn say after the game that he wasn't close to being pleased with the tempo.

Coosa,

No, I left Selma in 1961. Moved to Montgomery and when I got married in 1968, my wife and I moved to Prattville. Been here ever since. Not long ago, on one of our earlier posts, I mentioned that I grew up with a guy whose nickname was Coosa, an Auburn grad by the way, and he actually got his nickname from his father, the first to have the nickname Coosa. His father was the Assistant Dallas County Engineer and my classmate later became the County Engineer and may still be in that position because he told me at one of our high school reunions that he wasn't near ready to retire. If you tell me that you are related to him, I am going to declare this a small world after all. We graduated from Parrish High in 1957. We both worked for the Highway Dept. in Selma together for a couple of years. I moved to Montgomery, he went into a consultant partnership for a period of time, then the County Engineer's position.

tommy, I think MSU kept things pretty simple. Also Anthony Dixon wasn't playing, although he will be against us.

From what I saw, their spread wasn't operating nearly as smoothly as ours was, but they improved as the game went on.

It is really hard to tell how good MSU was because of who they were playing. They will certainly be better than that team we tied, I mean beat sort of, last season.

IV - Thanks for the reply; I'm back in the land of the awake now. You've got a several years on me, but seem to need a lot less sleep.

I doubt I'm any kin to your Coosa friend; I created coosa sometime back in the 90s for selling on eBay and still use it there and a couple of other places. I grew up in Suttle and went to school there. We always wanted to play Parrish in basketball, but they were afraid of us. Kinda like the uat-uab thing, probably figured they had nothing to gain and everything to lose.

My prediction for the season: somewhere between 4-8 and 10-2.

We gotta win this week for the 10-2 scenario to still be alive. In fact, we gotta win the first 7 for it to stay alive.

Perhaps this is crazy, but I think we have better frontline players than the first 7 teams we play. Anybody agree?
