First post: Wednesday of Week Two

Hey everyone. Sorry for not blogging more yesterday. Tuesdays have to be very productive for me in regard to newspaper stuff. Them's the facts. Once I get beyond Tuesday, though, I'm in a much better position to give the HOTTIES plenty of attention.

I was very excited last night when Madison Bumgarner made his major-league debut for the San Francisco Giants. Long story short: I'm a roto baseball geek, I drafted Bumgarner while he was attending a North Carolina high school, I have him now all these three years (three) later. I spent a lot of time worrying over his minor-league numbers, so I was very happy that he pitched fairly well last night.

Here is Madison, as Auburn would say, doing what we do:

As a side note, if you see those t-shirts Auburn players wear that say "DWWD" ... now you know what that means.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

TODAY'S SCHEDULE
A quick glance at the schedule below should give you a good idea of where I'll be today. Hint: It won't be at Auburn. That doesn't mean I won't have some goodies for j00. I have a lot of video footage (40 minutes) that need to be dissected and given to you as Distilled Video Goodness®. I'll have to set aside a little more time for uploading since I'll be at HABOTN Headquarters and not on Auburn's mesmerizingly fast network.

That's not a joke. Auburn has the best internet access I've ever seen.

Here's what the next few days look like. All times are CDT:

Wed., Sept. 9, 4:30 p.m. (Wifey's birthday; Beatles Rock Band is released)
Thu., Sept. 10, 4:30 p.m. (No interviews allowed; Tiger Talk at 7 p.m.)
Fri., Sept. 11, OFF
Sat., Sept. 12, vs. Mississippi State, 6:05 p.m. (Fox Sports South)
Sun., Sept. 13, 4:30 p.m.
Mon., Sept. 14, OFF
Tue., Sept. 15, 4:30 (Chizik presser at 11:30 a.m.; Players available at 11:50 a.m.)

Also, please pick up the Advertiser's print edition if you live around here! Our fine Auburn coverage is only one element of our award-winning product.

  5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WIFEY!

HAPPY BEATLES ROCKBAND RELEASE PARTY DAY!

  6. Scottie,

I'm taking tomorrow off from work to enjoy a day of Beatles Rockband.

    ReplyDelete
  7. i'm not really into rockband, but i would have no problem jamming to some Beatles for hours on end.

RK, that's a fantastic reason to take off work.

i was walking Tucker this morning and my wife leaves for work and locks me out of the house. ausome. i was over an hour late. oh, well.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I am seriously geeked about the game today.

We play games on this shady CRT. I'm going to buy a relatively inexpensive LCD today as an birthday-inspired upgrade. Wifey may or may not slap me. She doesn't like spending money.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Nice work from Mrs. Burns!

Don't you have a Key Rock® somewhere around the hizzle?

    ReplyDelete
  10. My wife works four 10 hour shifts and has Thursdays off, so it's Beatles Rock Band day here at the house tomorrow.

I'm going to Gamestop today at lunch and pick it up.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i would encourage you to make her gift much nicer than the tv you buy today. that should help ease the pain of the slappage.

i have only played maybe 5-6 songs total on RockBand and have yet to finish a complete a song w/o being booed off the stage. :) mad skills my friend. i have mad skills.

  12. p.s.: Five of the top 10 Advertiser "web elements" yesterday were Auburn-related. They were in positions 1, 3, 6, 7 and 9.

    Alabama was 4.

We also had top video by a 1,000% margin.

    Thanks for your steadfast support!

    ReplyDelete
  13. nope, no keyrock. it sounds like a good investment, though.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Or some other mutually agreeable place for a spare ...

    ReplyDelete
  15. It was interesting yesterday to see how incredibly relaxed the Auburn players are these days.

Some of them are like new people. Ben Tate and Chris Todd in particular.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Relaxed over last year, or relaxed over the past few years?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I've never played a guitar video game, but I'm pretty sure I would be awesome at it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous9:09 AM

Aren't both of those guys also done with school except maybe a class or two?

    Winning tends to ease tension.

    ReplyDelete
  19. i'm not sure i really want C.Todd out wide catching passes, despite his double-move prowess. i really don't want that boy hurt!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous9:11 AM

ScottieB are you coming down this weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm sure any pass to Todd will be one where he can quickly get out of bounds... or a pass behind the line of scrimmage to set up a double pass.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Scottie,

I don't see how you do the drive from Knoxville...the Chattanooga to Auburn drive wears me out. You have to add an extra hour or so to it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i hope tate and todd don't graduate during the season. they may be suspended 4 games for academic reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "p.s.: Five of the top 10 Advertiser "web elements" yesterday were Auburn-related. They were in positions 1, 3, 6, 7 and 9."

Jay - Do decision makers take notice of those stats? Do they recognize the importance/potential of that information? Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anonymous9:15 AM

I love it when John and Barry call Mr. Tate a "great friend" with tongue squarely in cheek.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's hard to relax when you're on a ship without a rudder.

The communication and sense of direction are obviously much better this year.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sensi, i'll be there with cowbells on! it may just be a day trip. since the wife is planning on coming we have to juggle our kids/dogs arrangement. Tucker may be making his first appearance!

RK, actually from my house it's 2 hours to Chattanooga. we're on the NE side of Knox.

it's a whole lot better than the drive from Lexington, KY to AU for sure. that 8 hours was a loooooonnnnggg drive.

    ReplyDelete

These guys are inching towards Roger
    Schultz "quality" on radio.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Favorite quote from the notebook by Ben Tate,"(Malzhan)knew exactly what they were doing.IT was just us executing." Don't know if "they" is the coaches or the La.Tech defense. Either way it is encouraging.

Good deal, Scottie. It should be a fun day. SEC opener and all.

MR. United is wrong. Kirk Hammett is waaaay more talented than Dave Mustaine.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Kirk Hammett from Metallica?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous9:29 AM

I should never expect intelligence from Mr. United.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anybody seen the commericial with the two little girls and the guy asks if they want a pony. I think the one that did not get the real pony is Kirk Hammett's child - looks just like him, give her a guitar.

  39. JGT: Sir, these numbers speak volumes.
    Exec: They mean nothing.
JGT: You're being obtuse. Is it deliberate?
Exec: 30 days in the hole!!

  40. Sean is our winner!

Side note: I have never heard "Octopus' Garden" before ... and it's alarming. Did rehab exist in 1968?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Relf is a big dude.

He played at Carver. He's a bad man.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous9:36 AM

Didn't realize he played in the Gump.

Another player that escaped or was he a diamond in the rough?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think rehab exists now because of Octopus' Garden.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am having to work too much to contribute but I am more relaxed than I was last Saturday.
Happy Birthday to Wifey!! I am a birthday girl this month, too!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anonymous9:40 AM

Guys, their influence is great, but The Beatles didn't invent rehab too in spite of what VH1 has tried to convince you of in recent years.

    ReplyDelete
  46. We are tailgating this w/e at the field off Donahue and Lem Morrison. Anyone else out there in the boonies?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Relf played pretty well in the 2nd half of the MSU game. Lee got banged up and didn't play in the 2nd but should be back for this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  48. More of Lee and less of Relf will be to our advantage.

    ReplyDelete
  49. it took MSU a while to get going. they missed a couple FG's, had short field due to turnovers for a couple TD's, and returned an INT for a TD late in the game.

Brandon Heavens #3 played a good bit.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sensi - frontline was a poor choice of words; shoulda said first string. In other words I believe our first 22 are better than the first 22 of our first 7 opponents. Not sure about depth as compared to TN or ARK, and maybe even KY.

Basing a lot of that on what I saw last year and may be wrong, but I don't think I'm too far off. I thought we had better players than WV last year WITH Pat White. Only our dysfunctional coaching staff kept us from winning that game easily. We beat TN and should have beaten ARK.

If any of those teams are better than us, it can't be by much. It is a stretch to think we can win all 7, but I think there is a chance. And if we somehow do, our confidence level will be on the moon and give us a chance in every game left. Beat Furman, then split the other 4 and we are 10-2. I'd think we would win at least one of those 4 if we are good enough to make it to 7-0.

But the key is winning the first 4 at home, and that means that this week is a must-win for a really good season. Lose it, and we are again fighting to be bowl eligible.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It is so great to be able to come on the computer each morning and read substance about Auburn football.
I have never been in this postion before and I have been around the block a few times
Jay let me say it one more time

    THANKS!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I thought Kurt Cobain invinted rehab and everything else musical according to VH1.

For a period of time it seemed that Nirvana or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" topped every one of their lists.

    Best Hard rock band
    Best hard rock song
    Best song
Most outlandishly insane use of a janitor in a video
    Awesomely cool videos
    Best Country song
    Best soft rock song

I think it was on all of their countdowns like that.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I had a kids album in the late '70s that had children singing "Octopus' Garden" on it. Then again, That's not really any worse than the Kidz Bop trash they come out with these days.

    ReplyDelete
  54. "with the lights out it's less dangerous."

    ReplyDelete
  55. Brother Jet a very Happy Birthday to you wife. May her days be long, healthy and happy.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have horrible memories of Octopus' Garden.

New Years Eve 1995. Me and my mom were coming back from church and I was driving with that song playing and as we take a curve on the way back home the car in the opposite direction decides instead of taking the curve that they would try to run through us a guardrail and into a field. (Or they just forgot to brake into the curve)

As we sit there my mom says "get out and make sure they are ok" since they hit my side I tell my mom "If I could open my door, I'd be in their car right now."

I'm glad my mom didn't just beat me senseless right then.

However, that song is indestructable. I still have the CD and it never skips despite the impact of the wreck while it was playing.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sensi: Relf definitely was a diamond in the rough. I didn't think he could play quarterback in the SEC. No way.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Anonymous10:04 AM

Who recruited him, Jay G.? SCroom?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Has Neal McCready done anything off the wall today? The people on Tiderinsider are wearing him out this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  60. i thought that AU FB Everyday was going to be on CSS? is this correct? if so, when does it start?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Scottie, yes, Auburn: Every Day is on CSS. It debuted last Friday. I forget the time exactly, but it is either 3:00 or 3:30 central time. They also showed it inside the stadium before warm-ups on Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It will be on every Friday around taht time.

    ReplyDelete
  63. thanks EB, i found it on the CSS site. it's on at 4 ET on friday afternoons.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh yea. Relf signed three years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Show airs at midnight Friday on WCOV (Fox) here in the Gump.

    ReplyDelete
  66. D.Miller I understand about the picks being out of your control. And is now obvious that it will be top 25. I am new at this and I am just gropping around trying to find my way.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Relf is the better QB for running the ball and Lee is the better QB for passing. They love to rotate the QB's.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Luv - I'll fix the map when I get home tonight... if I remember

WEGirl - AUFan365 is tailgating there. Are you with hime? His EXACT location is shown on the map. And no, I don't have the link for it.

  70. google map finally loaded.

Here it is, War Eagle Girl. Where should your marker be?

    ReplyDelete
  71. THT, that's fantastic! thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ok Hotties, UGA -7 over USC. This is a must win for UGA. Spurrier will be looking for something to prove and he'll have film on how OSU put up 24. Intriuging(sp?) matchup. Who ya got?

    ReplyDelete
  73. i wouldn't touch it Sean. i find it hard to believe that UGA could start out 0-2 but i haven't seen their game yet. the loss of Sturdivant (sp?) has to hurt their OL. the Cocks have NO offense, though. i'd take UGA to win, but not to cover. they usually play close games.

    ReplyDelete
  74. THT...where am I on that map?

    lol.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I wouldn't touch it either to be honest.

Both looked bad to me in their opening games.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Carolina always plays UGA close, but they might not score at all. tough call on that spread

    ReplyDelete
  77. Anonymous11:39 AM

So much unknown with Georgia. What we do know is that SC's offense is bad, but the Dawgs defense is not hot either.

I think SC can win it, but I also find it hard to think about Georgia starting 0-2.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Even with Stafford and Moreno last year, UGA only managed a 14-7 win in Columbia. Hard to see it being much different. I'd take UGA in something like a 10-7 game. As bad as they were on Saturday, I was still impressed with UGA's defense considering the oposition. Much better than anything they've put out the past few seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  79. A very happy birthday wish goes to Wifey.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Most people don't realize how well UGA's defense played last week. I don't see them losing this game either

    ReplyDelete
  81. methinks gamecocks pull the upset.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I must say that I am very impressed that this team came together as a team out of the blocks. I am so use to Auburn's offense taking 4 or 5 games to get it together that I thought it was inevitable. This team will be limited by depth. If it weren't for that, I would say we contend for the west title.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Dan Mullen has not twitted once since Sept 04.

    Dan it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Aaand I'm going to just set it up for THT's #88 post.

    ReplyDelete
  85. THT can't be denied!

Rivals has ranked the kickers. Cody Parkey is #1.

    Kickers rankings

    ReplyDelete
  86. Joel Bonomolo also finally gets ranked by rivals, as 4*.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Certainly, Rivals must be unaware that Cody is an AU commit?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Aero, I know you will be coming home a long time ago. Any idea how long ago it will be?

    ReplyDelete
  89. I finally finished my Mississippi State Preview. Hope you enjoy.

    Miss State Preview

    ReplyDelete
  90. Well per the pick em rules, I have to pick one or the other. I think USC covers.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Steve, what are your thoughts on our season and do you think our depth will be an issue?

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think UGA wins the game, but SC covers.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Anonymous12:49 PM

    Jay G. et al,

If Chris Todd goes down, who would be the QB? Caudle or Kodi?

Guys on WMSP's Roundtable asked this today

    ReplyDelete
  94. They say that Caudle is the backup, not sure why they would say that and then send Burns out there.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think Sensi was pointing out those guys only pretend to have brains.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Caudle is #2 on the depth chart

    ReplyDelete
  97. The morning show is OK, it only has one idiot. The afternoon show is unlistenable IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  98. THT.

I'll take my break around Christmas time, and spend a couple of weeks in Europe. That would energize me till next Summer. Can't make myself quit what I believe is good.

( Yes, I know what De Gaulle said, the graveyards are full of indispensable men. I don't like winters in Ontario ).

    ReplyDelete
  99. It would be Caudle with Burns still running the Wildcat.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Aero, sounds like you won't be coming home for the Iron Bowl. Snowy Europe or Mediterranean Europe?

    ReplyDelete
  101. You're so judgmental, ehyou.

    ReplyDelete
  102. ULL Band video, tribute to Michael Jackson, fun stuff...

    Here

    ReplyDelete
  103. Sean, I think depth will be the only reason we don't contend for the West title. We could probably get through the season at every position except linebacker. There just isn't enough depth there. When Freeman and Pybus get back, it will be better, but I think this defense ends up getting worn down as the season progresses. At the moment any scholarship linebacker we have healthy will play.

Hopefully a walk on will step up, such as Wade Christopher, but it is hard to see us making it through the second half of our schedule without more depth at linebacker.

Against LaTech Etheridge was very aggressive because of their confidence in Bates. He could help out the linebackers if we are in a nickle package.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I just call 'em like I see 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  105. As for who the number 2 QB is, I thought the coaches made it very clear that it is Caudle. Burns is on the field a lot, but not as a QB. Even when he is in the wildcat, he is behaving like a runningback.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Thanks, Steve, I was not aware of the situation at linebacker.

It's also good news that the staff trust a true freshman to start, I was worried about that.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Turkey, Italy, Spain, and meet up some relatives and friends in Germany.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I thought it pretty amazing the Bates started as a freshman. That coupled with Adam Herring starting with only a little over a weeks practice is pretty scary.

    ReplyDelete
  109. We got pretty lucky this first game. We didn't get any injuries that I am aware of. For a while there it seemed LaTech had someone hurt on every other play.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Aero...
The comments after the video are the best. They are quite serious about their marching band.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Jax State completed several long passes against this MSU defense. It could make for an interesting day for us.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Baylor lifts ban on dancing. Now you know why a dancer like me crossed them off my list early in the selection process.

    ReplyDelete
  113. ehyou, i just wanted to post something with my new avatar

    ReplyDelete
  114. a temp who, thankfully, will be leaving Friday heard that i was an AU fan. She called her father, UA-T class of '60 and had him come to the office with his ugly cap on.

If my feelings for UA-T constitute a hate crime, then lock me up and throw away the key. I'm hatin and i ain't gonna stop.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Haha, now we understand why she's just a temp.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Wow, I can't believe Baylor allows dancing. Now all the students will burn in hell for eternity.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Esther in the house!!

Fred Sanford why is it every time I come over to your house you call me ugly?
Because I'm not the type to lie.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I forgot Knox was now a coach at Miss State. Anyone worried that he is coming back to Auburn this weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Anonymous1:38 PM

    Bad form, Steve.

    ReplyDelete
  120. UT seems to have cornered the market on goofy promotions.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Anonymous1:38 PM

Why worry, Kathy? Unless you are concerned about how well MSU's running backs are coached.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Greg Knox admits Saturday's Mississippi State-Auburn game will be a different experience, and it's easy to see why: He spent the past 10 seasons there as the Tigers' wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

Knox was part of the staff that departed Auburn in the wake of Tommy Tuberville's resignation last December. He soon landed at Mississippi State, where he's the running backs coach. As the Auburn recruiting coordinator for every class signed on the Plains except the most recent one, he has an intimate knowledge of the Tiger roster.

"A lot of good talent on that team," Knox said. "That's still a team that — most of those seniors have always been to bowl games, most of those seniors have always been winners. Matter of fact, that senior class has only had one losing season, so there's a lot of winners left there. A lot of kids who know how to win."

Knox shared an office building with current Auburn head coach Gene Chizik when Chizik coordinated the Tiger defenses from 2002 to 2004. "I just remember him being a technique, sound, fundamental coach," Knox said. "He really paid attention to all the little details. He really coached his kids -- he was kind of a player's coach. The kids really liked being around him. I would imagine he's doing the same thing."

    ReplyDelete
  123. It was definitely sarcasm Sensi. This first game definitely showed us how inept Knox was, but we all knew that.

    ReplyDelete
  124. A guy came all the way to your office just to wear his UAT hat in front of you?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Wanna see some of the mistakes Auburn made? Missed tackles, fumbles, etc?

    ReplyDelete
  133. Kathy: The current wideouts might be scared that Knox is returning. They've seemed to progress so far since Knox left ...

    ReplyDelete
  134. Hoopie you do know that's one of Aunt Ester's favorite phrases, right???

    ReplyDelete
  135. yeah, we need to keep Knox as far away from our WR's as possible!

Mon...Yes....that was my attempt at self-deprecating humor.

I need to work on that.

    ReplyDelete

And this Louisville slugger will knock you out.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Anonymous2:24 PM

Scottie..I'm withya. Just the prescense of Knox could set our veteran WRs back to pre-spring status.

Steve would then have to re-evaluate his season predictions...again.

    ReplyDelete
  142. if the WR's go down, we'll just keep C.Todd out wide in the Wildcat so he can use his supreme athletic ability and put double-moves on all those DB's. no fears Hoopie.

  147. Didn't Knox give the WRs bubblegum before the game? I think he said it made them faster. They'll have to miss that.

Sensi.....I get the feeling that with Coach Troop's encouragement....the WRs are mostly worried about route-running, getting off jams, downfield blocking and ...NO DROPS.

  150. our WR's will see Knox, cringe in fear at the thought of ever being coached by him again, then catch every freakin' pass thrown in their direction!

    NO DROPS!

i wonder how many up-downs D.Adams & Tate had to do after their drops on saturday nite. hmmm....
