So Memphis fired coach Tommy West today, effective at season's end, and ESPN.com has assembled an intriguing list of possible candidates.Welcome to the Coaching Carousel.
Sources told ESPN.com that Memphis is expected to attempt to hire a high-profile coach. Possible candidates include former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville; Division II North Alabama coach Terry Bowden, another former Auburn coach; Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn; and LSU assistant Larry Porter, the former Memphis running back.
Well, that would shorten Tuberville's commutes to Jimmy Sexton's office. On the other hand, Memphis is a weak program located in a (relatively) cold area of the Southeast.
Ummm, no. Not happening.
Malzahn? Maybe. I just don't think he's accomplished enough as a college coordinator to warrant a serious look, but I could be wrong. We'll all be keeping an eye on this as things progress.

ReplyDeleteJust watched Auburn Football Everyday. Chizik got a little emotional at his post game speech after the Ole MIss game. Also watched the Auburn Review. Had a nice segment on Gus. He kept talking about fast forward a couple of years when he has his recruits here on offense and how it will come together. Should be fun to watch.

Negativity-as-entertainment is losing its draw. Finebaum's ratings are down in the ONE market I TOTALLY KNOW (Montgomery) and I believe it's because people want more facts/educated speculation and less baloney.

Now Saban to Michigan might be an interesting thought, but I just don't see it happening. There are not many schools willing to sell their souls like Bama. Saban has a pretty sweet deal.

I think Petrino's a great offensive coach. Seems like a decent recruiter. We'll see where Arkansas is in four or five years (if Petrino stays that long), though.

ReplyDeleteWOW. What a discussion last night. Just read through the posts. Here is what I surmize:
ReplyDeleteDictators get results, good or bad they get results. In the long it seems all the results are bad.
Ida ... whew ... not one, but 2 landfalls in Alabama -- first at Dauphin Island, then over the bay to Fairhope.

I agree...if offered the Memphis job, Malzahn would take it. He knows his offense will tear through whatever teams Memphis plays. And history shows, the best way to become an HC is to be an HC.
ReplyDeleteWould suck for us though. I'm not sure anyone on our staff knows the O well enough yet to work out the kinks in the SEC.
That's the thing I'm most impressed about...under Tubs, we never seemed to be able to iron out offensive problems during the season. But Malzahn has been tweaking ever since our loss to Ark...and I think those losses will actually pay dividends in the next two games.

Cities were considered legitimate targets by both sides in WWII. The only difference the bomb made was that we went from 1000 planes to level a city to 1.
Does he (Trooper) look like a head coach to you?
ReplyDeleteNo. He doesn't even LOOK like an Assistant HC...but it is what it is...
Hopefully CGM will stay at AU long enough to build a resume that will land him a HC job at a top school.
ReplyDeleteBoom Boom Muschamp has modified his sideline personna to the point that he looks like a HC. Trooper could morph accordingly if desired.
ReplyDeleteNot that I know anything, but I don't think Malzahn has been a coordinator long enough to be a HC. Apparently, things are a mess at Memphis. Why would he want that?

ReplyDeleteSherman vs A bomb ...while there arre similarities in the 2, there are also many differences in thise situations.
ReplyDeleteThe A bomb killed/maimed 250k people, yet saved 1,000,000 American and 4,000,000 Japanese lives.
Sherman killed 50k people and shortened the war enough to save 100k people.
