BLAWGIN' FER YER NOGGIN: Gene Chizik speaks again

Hey everyone. You know how this works.

  • He has arrived ... three minutes late.

  • "This is a great, great Georgia football team. Our kids ought to be into it and ready to play."

  • On if he'd buy stock in this team: ``I've seen them go through a lot of good and some bad -- and handle both. They just keep coming back, keep playing, keep fighting. They just keep hanging in there."

    (He won't answer the question.)

  • On A.J. Green: ``AJ is a great talent. He has a lot of range and a lot of speed. He's their go-to guy this year. They take a lot of shot down the field with him. It'll be a huge challenge for our secondary -- which should be fun for our secondary. He'll make you go to work all night long. We'll have to make sure we have the right matchups when he's on the field."

  • On Joe Cox: ``The more pressure you get on him, the better. He's a very, very good quarterback. He's very accurate. He's an extremely talented guy. He can put the ball right on the money."

  • On Georgia's underperforming defense: ``When I look at them on film, I see a very talented team that has been very productive."

  • On injuries: ``Our staff has done a really nice job of being able to plug other guys in. Onterio McCalebb has been out ... and we've had some young guys stuff in there. They'll have to continue doing that."

  • On the line between promoting assistant for other jobs and wanting to keep a good staff at Auburn: ``It's a fine line. I want to help our guys to be able to achieve every goal that they set out to do when they became a head coach. If that's being a head coach, I want to help them -- just the way people helped me. I don't want to lose any of them. At the same time, my job as a head coach is to help them achieve those goals. There's no reason I wouldn't help them -- and they know that."

  • On retaining offensive swerve: ``You'd like to think you could carry it week-to-week. Sometimes we start the game off slow and we pick up momentum as we go. It's a game-by-game issue, in my opinion."

  • Travante Stallworth is out this week. ``He won't be playing."

  • On Ben Tate getting national respect: ``I'm really proud of him and the achnowedlgements he's receiving now are certainly well-deserved. He's a guy who laid low at the beginning of the year and did what he needed to do to become a better football player. Twelve hundred yards later, it's showing up."

  • Ben Tate's effect on recruiting: ``If you have a guy hit 1,000 yards in nine games in this league, that's hard to do. The proof is there. If you want to rush for 1,000 in this offense, you have opportunities to do that. You know you're going to get the ball."

  • That's a wrap.

  1. Looks like the Auburn football team is headed for 9 wins and a decent bowl game. I guess I can live with that.

  2. ehyou... AU EXCEEDED all expectations for me this year..PLUS the O has been fun to watch every game for the first time since 2004.

Its great to be an AU tiger..

  9. Chizik isn't late until 11:31.

I didn't blog Jeff Lebo's remarks previewing the big Niagara game.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I hope you're not devastated.

    ReplyDelete
  11. MTD - my soon to be 3 y/o son and future 4* recently took a trip to Athens with some friends. He was not swayed and it's reported that he continuously replied "War Eagle Hey!" to every Go Dawgs taunt thrown his way.

  12. scottie b is DEVASTATED.

  13. Niagara is good. They made the tourney last year.

  14. Beware of snipers, JayG.

  15. No Lebo coverage...what is this, a football school?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm gonna clock this as a late arrival.....NOW.

  17. College basketball has begun. That's fine by me. Something to watch during the week. Watched North Carolina last night.

  19. I swear, I can't make this stuff up:

UGAly- "Eddie, pour eddie ! Everything you said is pure subjective,
I don't blame you for wishing uga in decline and all that, and like a true aub alum I understand your lack of ability for loyalty( ask tubbs)
But were fine in athens and we will make whatever changes that are needed at the end of the year! I am not worried at all by one bad season ! You seem to ignore that -16 turnover stat, yet we have still manage to be competitive ! We will be fine.
Judgeing by the way Az st, Ark, even lsu have played we are not that bad, but you will find out sat!
Oh yeah there are many sites if you google toughest schedule in 09 that does have Uga ranked much higher, and says there 08 was the toughest ! You just keep changing coaches and playing patsy's you are bound to luck up one year!"

    ReplyDelete
  20. Eddie, I just your posts on the last thread of the emails you've gotten. His spelling is ATROCIOUS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. maybe he was busy flagging people down on I-85 trying to find someone who can play safety or linebacker...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Eddie, I honestly don't believe UGA is that bad either. Respect the Dawgs, don't fear the Dawgs, but don't underestimate them, either.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Where has the obsession with the stock metaphor come from this year?

    ReplyDelete
  24. E-Bro: Chizik brought it up maybe six weeks ago.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Not Gene's brightest move, especially in this economy.

I guess everybody else has just run with it since.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fortunately, I don't work with any die hard football fans, so I don't have to deal with jerks from the opposing teams. We work with the speech pahtologist a lot and she shares a space with the physical therapists. She's an Auburn grad and they are all bammers. They give are constantly giving her grief.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hey Jay has everyone just gaveup asking about injuries?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Is Lane Kiffin a football analyst on the side? Last week, he wore a ESPN hat to his presser. This week, it's a CBS College Sports hat.

    ReplyDelete
  29. UGA is inconsistent if anything. Their offense was crazy against Arkansas and South Carolina (back when USC was playing decent defense). Their defense was pretty darn decent looking against LSU and OK State. They just can't maintain either, or put them together in the same game (save Tennessee Tech- patsy anyone??).

The thing that makes me think Auburn will win handily is Auburn's ability to stay unified and keep battling. When UGA gets down, they're eerily similar to AU 2008. The coaches look confused, the players look angry, depressed, and unmotivated, and there is very little unity on those sideline.

Auburn is mentally stronger this year, and that should be the difference.

Just don't kick the dang ball to #2 (Brandon Boykin). He'll murder our shoddy kickoff team.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Norm, Scottie, it's good to know he still may end up normal. Truth be told I can't help but love that he's able to go to UGA free. So I just brush off these little remarks as stuff he's picking up from the leghumpers.

    ReplyDelete
  31. What is the point of these press conferences? The coaches never say anything anyone really wants to hear.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bro- I don't fear georgia and I don't think they suck. You did the show with me, I gave them their props, but I get tired of getting hounded by emails and phone calls so I will respond in terms he understands, whether he admits it or not. He has called me 3 times already this week and sent about 20 emails. I HATE GEORGIA!

    ReplyDelete
  33. WOW. a definitive statement:

Travante Stallworth is out this week. ``He won't be playing."

    ReplyDelete
  34. What about Onterio?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Eddie, does that guy actually claim to be an UGA grad? I'll bet he did great on essay tests.

    ReplyDelete
  36. WOW... An answer about a player

    ReplyDelete
  37. He said Onterio is DxD.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I too am socked by the stallworth revelation. What substance!

    ReplyDelete
  39. so, to be clear, DxD is NOT the same as DnD.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That's a wrap, people.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Scott C- Never set foot in a classroom at UGA. Look, I know every school has their share of fans that don't attend the college, but some have more than other. UGA and bama are two of those and I hate both of them almost equally.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Woudn't it be d squared?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Who do you hate the most Eddie?

    ReplyDelete
  44. The "Step by Step" theme song always pops into my head when the day by day statement is made.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Michael...love me some TGIF on ABC back in the day. Full House, followed by Family Matters. Or before that, Perfect Strangers.

Talk about an hour of power...

    ReplyDelete
  46. AU Mikey- Alabama has a slight lead there, but Georgia has been making up ground each year that i'm stuck in this stinking state. Sorry for those that live here, but I want out and will bail first chance I get in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  47. How did you feel about UGA before living in Georgia?

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's good to know that Georgia continues the trend of playing a great team every week.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love that last statement about Tate. I agree his showing this year in this offfense will help recruiting.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I will let it be known that the Georgia fans in my office (which equate to about 5 of the 15) are much more quiet this year than in years past. I think they're pretty unsure which team of theirs is going to show up Saturday, as am I. I'm hoping that ours is the team that WHUPPED up on UT. Yeah that team from the first 3 quarters.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I hope the Georgia team that played UT shows up.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Georgia has been consistently average ever since the LSU game. That seemed to be the game that marked the end of their inconsistencies. Since then, they have been steamrolled by Tennessee and Florida with big wins (as expected) against Vandy and Tennessee Tech.

The only real surprise in that stretch is the blowout win by Tennessee, but more the manner of the loss than the loss itself. But that result becomes less surprising with every game that UT plays since.

    ReplyDelete
  53. college football is so unpredictable and as parity has swooped down on us it is getting more so. Can only hope that the auburn of the first 5 games or last 2 will show up and not the three in the middle, Go Tigers beat those leghumping butt licking Dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I didn't really think he was a Jawja grad, Eddie. It was just that he said something somewhat derogatory about you being an AU alum, so I did wonder if he was claiming to have actually gone to school at UGA.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anonymous12:18 PM

Eddie ...I feel the UGA hate, but differently than you.

I just spent 3 days fishing on Lay Lake between Clanton and Wilsonville. I saw 60-80 Bama-attired fans and 1 AU-attired fan that would qualify as never-have-attended their school. That is probably an appropriate ratio for the Bama-AU relationship. If in Ga. there may have been 15-20 folks in that catagory.

My problem is with the UGA grads. These folks whine, moan and desert their team at the first sign of trouble. Unlike the UT, UF or AU fans I know here ....the UGA fans I meet/know are "football ignorant".

    ReplyDelete
  56. Anonymous12:30 PM

"A Bammer Story" ...We fished and drank beer until dark on Friday, then decided to go out to eat at a BBQ house on Hwy 145 (not recommended btw). I was gonna shower, change clothes, etc. and my buddy curiously said that it would be better to go as dressed. We walked in the restaurant and I courteously removed my fishing hat, which drew stares from the patrons, of which 10-15 were proudly donning Bama hats. Realizing that manners were not appreciated, I promptly replaced my HABOTN hat on my head just to fit in. I then drew stares as the only blue-orange hat in the place.

Wow have they ran out of ideas or what?

    ReplyDelete
  62. The fact that Stallworth isn't day-by-day is conerning. I think he might be out for a while.

Just once I would like to hear a coach say "we should really beat the crap out of them. Their defense isn't that good and their offense is eratic".

    ReplyDelete
  63. Nope, you're mistaken, Hoopie. That's Denny Chimes, alright. Haven't you heard about Bama's new tradition where the team captain sits in the top and Bammer fans pay $50 each to sit in the bottom?

    ReplyDelete
  64. It's $100 each if Saban is sitting up top.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I have fished Lay Lake a few time Hoopie (many a year ago though) - How did it go for ya?

    ReplyDelete
  66. WERK, who comes up with this stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  67. I see the line is floating @ 4.5 GA's way - I Just Don't Get It! I would place it at a pick'em at worst, AU 1 or so favorite at best.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  69. What up hotties?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hating on UGA, which is one of my favorite passtimes.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Home team usually gets at least 3 points.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I do think Georgia should be favored. Yes, they lost to Tennessee, but they beat Arkansas. If I remember correctly, 3 of their 4 losses were to top 10 teams. Don't underestimate the dogs.

  76. Chiz says Norm is "thread to thread."

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm just happy to be mentioned in the conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  78. does Norm's eye issues correspond to the downward turn of our offense, and his resurgence correspond to the resurgence of it?

    coincidence? i think not.

glad to have you back Norm. bout freakin' time.

LT ..Nice fall colors and weather. The bluebird sky and cold mornings ran the spots into deep water. We had poor electronics and my buddy likes to beat the banks anyway, so we went old school ....caught a bunch of dinks, drank beer and listened to football on the radio.

  87. I kinda Ziemba'd that one, didn't I, Scottie B?

    ReplyDelete
  88. It was that Bammer and his bread pudding comment.

    ReplyDelete
  89. yup. i blame it on FSJ and the SEC officiating crew.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Jamoga is a cool name. my cat is named Prechae. ha.

    ReplyDelete

  107. Yeah Michael, you are right, shocking...he had an INT this weekend

    ReplyDelete
  108. Speaking of Powers, puppets have many of them. We must be aware of these as Puppet Hour begins.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Alright guys we are 10 minutes into puppet hour and nothing. I'd hate to think the puppets are winning the war.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I've been hanging around the HABOTN for over a year, but I have a confession to make - I don't understand Puppet Hour. Why do puppets have special powers? Why do some of you fear them? Why is 4-5 puppet hour? I see references to it, but never an explanation.

Hoopie, next time you are around Lay Lake on Fri or Sat nite, go to Lessie's outside of Clanton and eat their seafood buffet. Its one of the few places around that puts raw oysters on a buffet.

The atmosphere isn't much, but the food is good. Both the staff and customers are mostly sidewalk bammers, so be prepared for all that goes along with that.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I'm going to be a better person one day.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Raw Oyster Buffet? It's either really awesome, or a stomach ache waiting to happen. There is no in between.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Oops, now the whole world knows that my wife is named Diane.

I wish she would stay off my computer; though she would say its our computer.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Michael and Harrison are afraid of puppets. The rest of us are scared of Michael and Harrison, so we agreed to hate puppets. 4-5 is the last hour of the work day. Instead of working, the Hotties come here. It's great fun. Try it.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Peter, the only way to mess up raw oysters is to let them get hot.

Not seeing Lessie's would never do that, but I'm still alive.

    ReplyDelete
  116. nobody knew anything until you just told us. now we know you pose as a woman sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Just seems like a lot of ice to maintain. Hats off to them if they do it.

    ReplyDelete
  118. seeing = saying. Guess I can blame the typo on puppets?

Thanks for the explanation; now I understand one of the great mysteries of life.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Peter, I couldn't dare let anyone think that my wife was recommending Lessie's. She hates it, and would kill me if she found out I had posted something good about it under her name. I'm more afraid of her than the puppets.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I love places that wives hate. That means they have character.

Fear Diane. Maybe she's a puppet.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I thought A. J. Greene was out with bruised lungs?

  139. Norm love the AU on the patch.
You need to stand a little closer to the razor next time.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Digger, I'm a very manly man. It's nigh on 9p here and I shaved before 6a this morning. For a few hours or so, I look relatively clean shaven.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Norm...that AU eye patch is totally bad a$$. Maybe we should have a HABOTN eye patch day just so we can show our support.

Who am I kidding? I just want to walk around in an AU eye patch.

    AUrrrrrrgh!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Norm you are right no MAN shaves two times in a 24 hour period

    ReplyDelete
  143. Think all the roids bleached Sosa out? That's just bizarre.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I always knew Sosa was a freak.

    ReplyDelete
  145. From $tuff my Dad says:

"You look just like Stephen Hawking...Relax, I meant like a non-paralyzed version of him. Feel better?... Fine. Forget I said it."

    ReplyDelete
  146. digger,

Gotta say I agree with you...

Not going to shave twice in a 24 hour period.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Norm, in the small pic at first glance you look like the Terminator. :)

    glad you're back friend.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Sosa looks like a vampire for halloween in that pic. yup, that's scary.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Norm,
So glad you are back. Love the AU eye patch! Prayers for fully restored vision soon.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn spoke to Evan Woodbery about head coaching openings and gave a quote that will bring a smile to Auburn fans' faces.
"I'm flattered if my name gets thrown around, I guess, but I'm extremely happy here...we've got big goals, big dreams here. I'm committed to that. That's the only thing on my mind."

    ReplyDelete
  151. Oh crap... He's gone.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Wait, that was the last coaching staff's MO.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Hey peeps.

I'm totally out of (mental) gas right now. I kinda stiffed you today in terms of content.

Tomorrow will be a better day.

    We'll do a stock report.

    Have a swell evening.

  158. That whole deal annoys me. How does saying the south will rise again promote segregation? A bunch of people making a big hoopla where there is no need for it.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I don't have the perspective to have an opinion here.

    ReplyDelete
  160. The south has already risen. Take a look at Atlanta. Are people migrating north? Too late. It has already happened. Next topic.

  161. Good morning Hotties. Traffic sucks. That's all for now until I get to work.

  162. Some interesting tidbits form Scarbinsky:

According to Rivals.com, Auburn has signed five five-star recruits in the last eight years. Alabama has signed seven five-stars in the last two years and has two more already committed for the class of 2010.

  163. Dyer committed Friday to become the first five-star recruit to sign with Auburn since injury-plagued defensive end Raven Gray in 2008.

Dyer committed to become the first five-star recruit on offense to sign with Auburn since juco running back Brandon Jacobs in 2003.

Dyer committed to become the first five-star recruit on offense to sign with Auburn out of high school since wide receiver Ben Obomanu in 2002.

  164. From 2002 through 2007, Alabama signed exactly three five-star prospects of its own.

  165. Good morning, Hotties.

What happened to Norm's eye? LOVE the eye patch, BTW!

RE: jhag's quote from Malzahn: As much as I'd like to see him stay for awhile, all coaches say the same thing. If the right HC offer came along, he's gone. Perfect example (not a direct quote, but close): "I guess I'm just going to have to say it. I am not going to be the next coach at the University of Alabama."

  166. AU fans should feel good about the recruiting process. It will take some time, but if you look at what has happened so far, the picture looks a lot better now than 1 year ago. Remember where we were 1 year ago? In the midst of a huge meltdown.
No one has signed yet and it could change by NSD, but right now, these guys have the attention of a lot young kids that are looking to play for a team that is improving and will give them a chance to shine.

  167. Hey Hotties! Y'all have a great day.
    I survived prison yesterday.

  168. LUV-I agree. I jsut don't think this is the right job. Even with an ego, many coaches have to lok at Memphis and say, I'll pass.

  169. WTC- I did see that Reed was still on for Friday after the game which is good news for us given the late push Oregon has made. I also see where the odds are shifting from Seastrunk to Lattimore as the most likely 2nd back we get. That concerns me a llittle especially with Dixon who seems to be high on UT now. I always thought Seastrunk, Reed and Dixon would be a package deal but not so much lately.

  170. To Gus' comments.

    I concur.

  171. I also agree wholeheartedly with WTC about the way this staff is recruiting. It is actually fun and exciting to follow how and who this staff is recruiting. They are not affraid to go after the best players instead of conceding that they have no chance like the previous staff.

On a side note, they just added another Auburn billboard in Stone Mountain where I work. Timing of it isawesome and they are also recruiting a kid from here.

  172. Eddie-Keep the faith for now. I am sticking with my original statements until proven incorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  173. wtc, your original statements as in your 6:12 post or something you said awhile back?

  174. WTC- I'm keeping the faith and preaching it. Not as elequant as Brother Jet but I give it my best.

  175. Speaking of Brother Jet...

  176. Luv-From earlier this season, if not before the 1st game.

    To summarize:
AU lands LOwens, MDyer, LSeastrunk, ADixon, TReed.

    ReplyDelete
  177. I would also be surprised if they do not land:
    Eric Mack
    Mike Thorton
    VBeasley
    Dakota Moseley

  178. I have no idea who any of those people are, but I hope they all come to Auburn and are very successful.

  180. WTC- I think we land Whitaker also.

  181. Now not being a big recruiting person, I can't guarantee that all of those guys are the ones wtc was talking about

  185. Jet- You must be going to National Band Competition. E-Bro knows all about that, he went to Indy like 4 times while at Ooltewah. I bet you even see Ooltewah there this year as well.
