Other practice notes, 12/19

Hey everyone. I'm going to hustle through these. I'm still here at Auburn and I need to get home!

  • Ben Tate and Antonio Coleman were selected to participate in the Senior Bowl. That means they're considered two of the better NFL prospects out there and this will give them exposure to NFL scouts.

Asked what he wants to accomplish in Mobile, Tate said: ``Just me as a person, you know, I think I have pretty good character. And also to show them that I'm the No. 1 senior running back in the country."

  • A total of eight football players (six current, two former) earned degrees at winter graduation Friday afternoon.

Current players: LB Craig Stevens, S Zac Etheridge, WR John Cubelic, OL Darrell Roseman, WR Tim Hawthorne and holder Clayton Crofoot.

Former players: OL Jeno James, DB Montae Pitts.

Chizik on Pitts: ``I called Montae last summer when I got here and told him, ‘No excuses, no anything, get back into school and graduate.’ And I’m just really, really excited to hear that he did that today. Just proud of him and he wasn’t the only one."

  • Chizik said Eric Smith is the only player who ran into academic problems. ``Everyone else is on good academic standing."

  • Coleman said he was skeptical about Hot Carter's revelation Wednesday that he plans to remove the "HOT BOY" tattoo from his face. ``I've heard that one before," Coleman said with a laugh. ``I'll believe it when I see it."

  • OL Andrew McCain on the players' schedule now that school is out: ``That's kind of a Catch-22 because it's nice not to have to worry about classes, but when we're not in classes they get to keep us up here all day long. So it's good because you get to focus on football and we are up here a lot, so you tend to be worn out at the end of the day."

  • LB Joshua Bynes on playing (almost) every snap this season: ``I did it for a season and a half ... so far. I've done it for 20 games straight. I just love being out there. Players are very dependent on me. When I'm on the field, they look for me. When I'm in high spirits and think things are going well, they're going to be in the same situation. They'll look at me. A lot of players look for me to handle that role."

  1. Practice makes perfect! GO TIGERS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  2. unwitnessed substance, apparently

    ReplyDelete
  3. who are the other sr RBs? Most of the really good RBs are underclassmen

    ReplyDelete
  4. I've invited the others to come play.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I guess they didn't heed your invitation.

    ReplyDelete
  6. RB Tate seems to be getting a bit too cocky. I wish him well, but he needs to stay humble. I am sure the NFL is a completely different environment. Many college stars turn into spectators when they head to the NFL.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Andre Ware "Rutgers only gives up 82 yards rushing on the ground."

I guess they give up most of their rushing yards through the air.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Mark, Eric Smith is still on the team. He just apparently didn't make the grades to play. That won't get you booted off the team. Hopefully the kid is getting his head straight. Bad grades cost you playing time, but they don't get you kicked off the team. Punch one more guy in a parking lot and he might as well just pack his bags.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I like Ben Tate, but my uneducated opinion is that he won't be lighting up the NFL and may be lucky to make a roster. I hope I'm very very wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Congrats to all the grad, but especially to Jeno and Montae!!! Well done, gentlemen!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. "I guess they give up most of their rushing yards through the air."

THT, I don't know which of us it is, but I believe one of us may be intoxicated.

    ReplyDelete
  12. THT, in today's game, RBs can make the roster in a number of capacities. If he can prove he can catch out of the backfield and runs a good 40, he will get drafted on the first day and make a roster.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That first sentence is complete whack, but I've had a few so forgive me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. best catches of year on the deuce now

    ReplyDelete
  15. My guess is that Tate makes a roster but isn't a star runningback in the NFL. I think his versatility and durability will take him a ways, but he isn't a Ronnie, Caddy, or Rudy.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I just saw a tweet where Lil Wayne has been detained in texas when they found pot on his bus. Just one question. What is a Lil Wayne? Is he like a Minnie Duke or something?

    ReplyDelete
  17. SteveFC - I was poking fun at the unnecessary redundancy of Andre's comment. Something we all do occasionally. (the redundant comment, that is, not the poking fun at Andre)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks THT. I had to look at that sentence a few times and question my sobriety:)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hooray for Jeno.

    ReplyDelete
  20. From LA Times (and just reported on the deuce):

Junior tailback McKnight, the Trojans' leading rusher, has been driving an SUV owned by a Santa Monica businessman, a possible violation of NCAA rules.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Somehow it seems that USC wouldn't get in trouble with the NCAA if they turned the recruiting violations into a reality TV show. Nothing seems to stick to them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. the only reason that's a "possible" violation and not an obvious violation?

    USC

    ReplyDelete
  23. So, did Lane Kiffikin leave USC because they didn't live up to his standards, or was it that his training was finished?

    ReplyDelete
  24. JayGT - thanks so much for this report. Please drive and arrive safely.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Good game going on in the Noog.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It is great to see so many players graduating. I do hope Etheridge hangs around for another season, but I would understand him moving on. I am just glad these players have apparently been prepared for life.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Noog always brings it.

    Always.

    ReplyDelete
  28. wow, what a throw by the Nova QB on 2nd and 24. 25 yard bullet to 4 yard line

    ReplyDelete
  29. TD Villanova, they lead 16-14.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am watching the Division I championshhip game between Montana and Villanova. It kind of makes me wonder if there is any talk in Division I of switching from a playoff system to a bowl system. I mean, that is how the big boys do it, right?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think Mount Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater should be bumped up to Division II.

They are meeting in the Division III championship game for the FIFTH consecutive year.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I confess, I have never seen Rock City, Ruby Falls, or Lookout Mtn. I've been to Chattanooga 3 times, each very briefly. Once for job interview, once to buy a car (saved a few thousand vs buying in jawja), and once as Santa Claus to pick up a 5 week old Molly pup.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Random tidbit....

Lookout Mountain actually ends in Gadsden. You can drive all the way to Chattanooga from Gadsden and never leave Lookout Mountain.

Useless information you didn't need to know...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm biased as a Noogan, but I think Lookout Mountain and its attractions hold their own distinctive charm. Point Park (the Civil War Park for the Battle of Lookout Mountain) is cool as well.

We also have the Tennessee Aquarium, the Walnut Street Bridge, other Tennessee River locale attractions.

Live it! Love it! It's Chattanooga!

    ReplyDelete
  35. map freaks know that. I've admired it several times on google maps satellite view. Yes, I'm that nerdy.

Reminds me , just yesterday I was looking at the Anniston Ammo depot on the satellite view. That looks really weird, all those little "earth huts" out in the woods.

    ReplyDelete
  36. FSJ...I've done that drive. Eaten at the Lookout, etc. Fun times. Need to go back and do that drive again sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Video will debut tomorrow morning.

    Please check back then!

    xoxoxo

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have been to Point Park..

    And the Aquarium too.

I've also sat in the attraction that is known as the inevitable wreck on the interstate in Chattanooga that ties up traffic for hours.

    ReplyDelete
  39. JGT, over and out from the Plains.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Have a safe trip and thanks for the updates JGT.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks for all the great work JayG. Much appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  42. my kids went to the aquarium in '92. I was at work.

    ReplyDelete
  43. "I've also sat in the attraction that is known as the inevitable wreck on the interstate in Chattanooga that ties up traffic for hours."

I've been in that attraction many times. Get frustrated, but then I spend a little time in Atlanta and realize things could be way worse

    ReplyDelete
  44. anyone here pulling for Montana?

I don't have anything against them, but II usually pull for the underdog if I don't have any other reason to pick sides. Plus Villanova is in blue. I like blue.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I marched in the opening parade for the aquarium in 91 or 92 as a fourth grader.

My entire class dressed up as red salmon. Fun was had by all.

    ReplyDelete
  46. That's a not-for-profit attraction just like the aquarium, right?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm kind of impartial to Montana myself. They always bring good numbers to Chattanooga given the distance they have to travel. Enjoy the setup they have out there.

Nova's taking control of this game, though.

    ReplyDelete
  48. There is no such profit associated with that attraction...at all.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Josh Bynes is a credit to AU. Great year in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 1. I am an admirer of the 'Noog. Have an aunt that lives there.

    2. The drive between Fakerville and the 'Noog is a beautiful one.

    3. Perfect practice makes perfect.

    4. I'm sure you want to know: at the anniversary plus one day dinner, Mrs. Jet had the lobster bisque and the swordfish with sun dried tomatoes, capers and olive oil. I had the fried oyster salad and the surf and turf (small filet and lobster). We were quite pleased.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Been a fan of Nova since Aldo Nova cranked out "Fantasy" in 1982.

My doppelganger Rollie Massimino won a national title with Nova in 1985.

Ex-Nova DL and Chevy pitchman Howie Long played in the Blue-Gray Game in the Gump after his collegiate playing days.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Mark, thanks for that comment.

Btw, seeing your admiration of Bynes, I'll trade him for McClain, just for the bowl games. It's the least I could do for another Hottie.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Villanova won their regional in the Ham vs my Tar Heels, 2 days after my Tar Heels had squeaked by my Tigers.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Banner year for Nova. A Final Four appearance in basketball and a FCS National Championship it appears.

    ReplyDelete
  55. OK ... the Montana coach is an idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Montana coach apparently wants to take a timeout back and put it in their trophy case. They need to scores and he just let 40 seconds run off the clock.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Jet says it much more succinctly than I.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I liked the way you turned the phrase, THT.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous9:52 PM

We're taking the inlaws to the Noog Aquarium next week. I like it much better than the commercialized Atl Aquarium.

One of our partner's family owns Ruby Falls on Lookout Mtn. I've had passes to go for years but have yet to go.

Did sign a good score card and win some cash playing at that golf course up on Lookout Mtn several years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh, I get it. The Montana coach is Amish. They're morally opposed to timeouts.

    ReplyDelete
  61. well, now I know why App State lost in the blizzard last week in Missoula... they didn't wear all blue unis. Never mind that their colors are black & gold.

Richmond wearing all blue beat MT last year

Villanova wearing all blue about to beat MT tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I thought he was Mormon and wanted to stay married to all those timeouts.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Villanova got caught playing the 4-4-4 defense.

    ReplyDelete
  64. We shoulda tried this on the last drive against UAT ... 12 on defense. Rush more than they can block works most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Sure, i-AA can expand their playoffs and run it into January, but I-AA doesn't want to miss class?

    PUHHHHLEEEEEEEEEEEEZ

    ReplyDelete
  66. That was Neikoesque.

    ReplyDelete
  67. If they get the onsides kick, this guy's a freakin' genius.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Montana should have run that play at least 5 times in this game.

    ReplyDelete
  69. That's why they kept the timeouts. T

Montana's coach apparently can see the future. What kind of defense was Nova playing there, though?

You can't, CAN'T give up a long touchdown in that situation.

    ReplyDelete
  70. even if they don't, he can still stop the clock 3 times.

Hmmm... maybe we were a bit quick with our coach critique?

    ReplyDelete
  71. chalk up Montae Pitts graduating as the most surprising thing I've heard today.

Well done, Montae. Way to take advantage of your situation.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'll stick with our assessment ... you can't assume an easy bomb.

    ReplyDelete
  73. maybe he can use one after 'Nova gets their first down

    ReplyDelete
  74. that was a pretty darn fun game to watch

    ReplyDelete
  75. In Div 1, 'Nova wouldn't be there. Travesty.

    ReplyDelete
  76. 2.0 has a pretty uncertain trip starting in 2 hours. It's snowing in Florence. Her first flight goes to Munich where it's in the teens and snowing. Her next flight is theoretically into the blizzard that will be engulfing Philadelphia tomorrow afternoon. And then to RDU.

I don't anticipate restful sleep tonight. Who am I kidding. With my snoring, I don't ever get restful sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Best of luck and safe travels for 2.0.

    ReplyDelete
  78. thanks, Sean. 2.0 just caught a taxi to the airport. I love google talk.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I need a big bowl of ice cream.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Molly dog was surprised she got ice cream this late. We're thoroughly enjoying our bowls.

    ReplyDelete
  81. good morning, Hotties!

    ReplyDelete
  82. No flights have left Florence today, at all. :-(
Poor 2.0. I wish I could contact her but I must have written her cell number wrong. It looks like she's going to have an epic travel story to share whenever she gets home.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Good to see some AU players invited to the Sr Bowl. Mid-season, I thought Todd had a chance at an invite; he let that slip away after the TN game.

Lots of ink around about Adams getting left off the all-sec teams, and lots more about all the All-Americans uat has this year. Congrats to them, they all deserved it, except one. Looks to me like kickers ought to be very easy to evaluate. You have their stats right in front of you, and what else matters on a kicker? The kick is good or its not good. Do they give them style points, or is there something else I'm missing?

    Tiffin - 29-33 on fg for 88%; 38-41 on xp for 93%; total - 92%.

    Byrum - 14-15 on fg for 93%; 49-49 on xp for 100%; total - 98%.

    Rewards - Tiffin - All-American.
    Byrum - nothing.

Maybe Tiffin boomed a bunch of long fg? Nope, long of 50, Byrum had a long of 49.

Could someone explain the logic used in selecting the all-sec and all-american kicker? If Byrum had made the one kick that he missed and been perfect on the year, would it have mattered?

    A good day to all.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Anonymous7:04 AM

Good luck to 2.0. It's just as well if she didn't get out of Florence. Nothing flying in the Mid Atlantic before midday tomorrow at the earliest. 6-7 inches down in DC with the heaviest snow expected this afternoon. 12-24 total expected.

I need to get some packages in the mail today. Fortunately, the post office is walking distance.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Good Saturday morning, Hotties! War Eagle!

I sure am excited about AU having the opportunity to play in a New Year's Day bowl AND all the commits Chiz and Co. have so far for next season!!! Let's hope they sign and qualify!

Tar Heel, safe travels to 2.0 whenever she gets to leave. Please keep us updated.

Coosa, I have an answer... Leigh Ann Tiffin plays for The Tahd and AU always get the shaft.

    ReplyDelete
  86. NOVA, I'm sure you're not happy about it, but I am so jealous. I miss the snow. I've lived in Bham for 11 years and it's only snowed 4 times and each of those times was only a dusting and was gone by noon.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yeah, Luv, this is one of the times I miss living in Cincinnati. I grew up in AL where snow was very infrequent.

The first time it snowed in Cincinnati we ran outside, looking up in the sky, yelling "it's snowing, it's snowing!" Our neighbors thought we were crazy. We had to rush off and buy boots, gloves, hats, snow shovels and sleds. Fun times! But too far from Auburn!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Anonymous7:21 AM

We call that polite snow. It visits for a few hours, makes things pretty and is gone by dinner.

I'm snug in a warm apartment watching the storm. Shoveling is someone else's problem. If the buses are running tomorrow, I'll probably head over to the National Mall and take some storm pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I hear ya, Cincy! Priorities, right? Hmmm...what's more important? Auburn or snow? I think the trade-off is MORE than fair!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Luv, next season is going to be waaaaaaay better than the one we just finished. I feel it in my bones.

    ReplyDelete
