Hey everyone. I spent some time earlier today on the HABOTN Hotline® with Chad Simmons, who is Scout.com's Southeastern recruiting manager.
My people inside the Scout organization said he was the go-to guy.
And he was.
Here is some of what he had to say. You can read more in tomorrow's editions of the Advertiser, which will feature a story on quarterback Cam Newton.
My people inside the Scout organization said he was the go-to guy.
And he was.
Here is some of what he had to say. You can read more in tomorrow's editions of the Advertiser, which will feature a story on quarterback Cam Newton.
- On how Newton's signing affected Auburn's recruiting allure: ``It definitely didn't hurt. Everyone thought he was going to Mississippi State because he had such a long-standing relationship with Dan Mullen. So Auburn kind of stole him away and that was something of a surprise to everyone. It created momentum. All those kids, the recruits, they know Cam Newton. They know what kind of player he is. Signing him created a buzz. The offensive recruits think to themselves: Let's go to Auburn and play with a kid like that."
- On how Marcus Lattimore choosing Auburn would push the Tigers' reputation even higher: ``I'd say him committing to Auburn would push that class right up there near the top. Anybody who gets Lattimore, whether it's Auburn or South Carolina, will be better immediately. He's an awesome player, the total package of on-the-field ability and off-the-field presence. I say that, but I like Michael Dyer almost as much. They're both as good as it gets."
- On where Auburn would rank with Lattimore and Whitaker on board: ``That's hard to say because you never know what happens on Signing Day. There's always some surprises. If Auburn holds everyone they have right now and add those two, I'd say they're in the 2, 3, 4 range." (Auburn currently is No. 5 in the Scout.com rankings.)
- On the Tigers' class in general right now: ``It's a very good class. It's the best I've seen from Auburn. You know about the four- and five-star guys, but they have some great sleepers, too. Kenneth Carter is one. Dakota Mosley is a lot better than people think. I'm not sure he'll stay at tight end at Auburn, but he'll be good anywhere they put him. Considering it's their first full recruiting year, having to build a lot of relationships from scratch, they've done a really nice job. It's a huge success."
- ALSO OF NOTE:
- Simmons spoke last night with DT Jeffrey Whitaker and believes Auburn remains the leader despite Whitaker's trip to Georgia last week. ``I sense that he'll pick Auburn, though he hasn't told me that," he said.
- Simmons believes OL James Stone will sign with Tennessee.
- He made his final assessments and adjustments yesterday, which included bumping S Demetruce McNeal from the nation's No. 70 safety to No. 31: ``Teams are going to regret not going after him because he'll be an excellent college player. Auburn offered him as a sophomore and locked him up. He had an outstanding senior season," he said.

Does this sound familiar?
Au shoots well enough in the first help to lead a ranked only to fade like a bad pen in the second half.
And I'm talking about In and Out in California. I wasn't impressed.
Those are good burgers, walter.
Shut the f up, Donnie!
Soul Burger is my favorite in Huntsville.
Dang, I completely missed we were that close to a flip. I'm ashamed.
I fondly remember the greasy burgers at Smokehouse Billiards (at lunch, no kids allowed later) in Florence from my childhood. Sensi and Cincy, did you ever have one there?
Other good burger in the River Region (although I haven't been there in awhile) ... Smokin' S BBQ in Wetumpka. Chris' Hot Dog's has a good one, too. I recommend the hamburger/hot dog combo at Chris'. They do have fries ... crinkled cut fried crispy the way the Good Lord wanted them cooked.
Hey Sponge, sounds like you are of my vintage.
The bar at the Auburn Hotel was Waldo Pepper's. Darvo's was its competitor in the 'x-for-1' wars in the summer of '82. I think I once had an 8-for-1 at one of those places, although for some reason my recollection of those days is somewhat foggy.
And here's a little national pub for Bro Jed & Sister Cindy (not Sarah).
Jet-Smokin S is very good. Good Q also.
Jimmy,
They don't have In and Outs here in the south. I have only seen them in Arizona, Nevada and California.
Fatburger also originated out in CA, and they do have a location in Atlanta. (or they used to). I have never eaten there.
My wife cannot get over the star in Lucas Hargrove's head.
I used to live in the neighborhood behind Smokin' S and would often walk there on Saturday's and bring back some of their good bbq. I can't remember if I ever had a burger there.
I love In N Out and hit it a couple times of month,
but if you like restaurant type burgers you have to try an Umami burger, they are out of this world.
http://www.umamiburger.com/
Anyone had the Ghetto Burger from Ann's Snack Bar in Atlanta?
NOrm ...
We actually call it Smokin' @$$ BBQ as a reminder of the country girl that answered the phone there. The BBQ is pretty good, but the burgers were the usual choice in the 13 years we were Wetumpkans.
The Ghetto has potential.
Fatburger is boring, but okay.
Pup - the most memorable thing about In n Out (in L.A.) for me was that it was fully staffed by Mexican folks. Every one of their name tags reflected Anglo names. I saw two Suzy's, a Richard, Bill, and a Janet. That seemed odd to me.
I've never had Hamburger King, but I always think of Ann's when you mention it.
Now OM shows why they are ranked and Au is not.
Peter,
Definitely a compliment! You are under 30, so according to my son, still young enough to be cool. Most of the people in Flip's today were young professionals and then a few old ladies like my group!
Norm, that sounds like an Indian call center.
I didn't make the game tonight because of a family scheduling issue.
The game isn't on here.
Links? Anyone?
I only have a year of coolness left? Bummer.
The chili burgers at The Dew Drop Inn in Mobile were pretty amazing - or they were 15 years ago.
Be glad you don't have ESPNU, Jay G.
Count your blessings, JGT.
It's on the U.
Oops. Thought it was SECN.
Cincy ... I prefer the dogs and the onion rings with a bottled Coke.
I think 99% of the population of Auburn had a similar family scheduling issue.
PF - yes it does. That's not just an Indian thing either. One of our hardware vendors has a support center based in Costa Rica, it's the same thing there.
I don't know Peter, some people can still be cool after 30. I consider myself cool in spite of what my little twit of a son thinks :)
ESPNU must need revenue, because they show some advertisements for the cheapest junk known to man.
I sincerely hope Shon Coleman is not watching the game tonight. He would decommit in a heartbeat.
Great story on the Dance Dance Revolution.
Freep, I saw two Pikes beat up a one legged guy at Darvos. They had the mechanical bull late 79 or 80. Also, Mothers was a good bar. It was on the corner by the bank downtown. Remember, it changed names about three times in the early 80's.
Rusty's was an old bar on Opelika hwy where we used to shoot pool.
Also, at the hungry hunter, I saw a huge fight up close and personal. Looked like one of those old western bar fights w/ people breaking chairs and all, complete with the paddy wagon showing up and hauling a bunch of guys off to jail.
you think it would be on espn360 since it is broadcasting on espnU,
weird
I'm a Pike.
Danica in a stock car Feb 6!!!
The Pikes at Auburn used to be an aggressive bunch. Don't know anymore.
Points in the paint
OM 36
AU 10
Jet,
When I was teaching the kids, for some weird reason we studied how hotdogs were made. Ever since then it is difficult for me to eat a hotdog.
I participated in the firing of a cannon, Civil War style, into a rival fraternity house. Very exciting.
Transy Chapter?
Digger dances better than the AU students ... particularly the one that doesn't have to drive home to his local mall to play the Dance Dance Revolution Extreme game.
Jimmy,
ESPNU is never part of the Gameplan packages. Only the Gameplan events go to ESPN360.
Too many passes, Rebels.
That was the worst example of a cheer I ever heard! And she didn't even have the words right.
I was a Sigma Chi Jay. We had a fight w/ the Pikes in our front yard one time. I rushed outside to find one of my Bro's on the ground on all fours, with a Pike on top of him pulling his head backwards and two fingers dug in his eyes. Needless to say, my guy was calling uncle.
Yep, the Pikes at AU at the time were recruited to play intramural football, and were indeed an agressive group.
Heck, I even forgot about this one. A pike broke into the house of my next door neighbor and was kicking his butt till we broke it up. Neighbor was dating his ex.
Darvos remains my favorite burger of all time.
I can't remember which frat it was, but a friend of mine drove his truck through the living room of a frat house. (It was either the Pike house, or one of the Sig houses).
Obviously hillarity ensued.
Pikes had a certain reputation when I was at Auburn, sadly it had nothing to do with cannonballs.
Cincy. I've been in a hotdog factory. That will certainly ruin your appetite. But the same can be said of chicken processing plants, etc.
What was the name of the restaurant out on Opelika Hwy, on the right. Nice place. It was in an old house. Think it was two words.
Sponge, please don't tell me anymore about chicken processing. Now that I am eating low cholesterol, chicken and I must be good friends.
My bro-in-law was a KA in the early 1970 when their house was on College Street ... two of the brothers had a water balloon firing contraption ... they were getting a big laugh firing shots at people stopped at the traffic light adjacent to the house. Unfortunately, they hit Terry Henley and date in his car.
Terry entered the house, found the offenders in their room and rendered one unconscious and bloodied the other until he excused himself.
Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible.
At least so the story goes.
That is NOT my Tylerson running the camera. Just in case you were wondering.
Reed 3-12 on the night so far. Keep shootin' until you get hot.
Another funny story. One of my Bro's was very intoxicated, ran from the police across the old Drill Fields. Ran into one of the softball backstops. then tried to hide in the tall grass around the backstop, like a tiger. Only, the grass was only about four inches tall. hilarious if you were there. And yes, he was naked.
The AU Pikes were VERY agressive in the early 80s. IIRC they were the ones who used to mix it up with the AU wrestling team.
The band with which I was affiliated played at Mothers in late June of '81. We were not entirely well-received, but we had fun anyway.
HATE is ALIVE ON THE BROADCAST.
For those who are watching on the U, does Joe sound like the color guy in 'Major League' with Bob Ueker?
Fearless. Mothers had the upside down marguaritas in the barbers chair. I partook early and often.
As in, "he'll need a rocket up his @$$ to catch that one"?
Wait, that was a Eucker line. Please excuse me.
AU basketball team needs LIFE ALERT.
You got it Norm
The color guy never said anything and the Euker would go "that's why he is the best in the business"
"Where have you been?" A classic comment given this guy.
Another blondie, NIIIICE
Cincy,
here?
Come on, those of you in Auburn in the late 70s early 80s, what was the name of the restaurant out on Opelika Hwy? Nice place, steaks their specialty I think. I hate it when I can't remember the name of something.
Yes, Peter, that was it. I didn't think the building was even still there. Got a name?
Auburn really sucks at basketball, and basketball production.
It was something like CC Torbetts, I don't think that is is exactly.
I'm really craving some Auburn food after tonight. I should just drive up there for the weekend, I think I would gain 10 pounds, 2 of it from the food and 8 from the beer.
Ole Miss: 72 percent from the field in th 2nd half, Auburn: 35 percent.
That's ABHORRENT!!!!!!
C L Torbett's maybe? Anyway, if a date took you there, it was something special.
2nd Half Double Digit Disaster Redux
Another stinker.
Cincy. I don't recall.
I only remember it as the place to pick up freshmen girls during happy hour. The rest is fuzzy. Definitely never had a steak there.
Google says its known as The Tavern now. I think there was a place next door, too???
Wake,
I ate at Mama Gs in B'ham on Friday last week. Food was great, but the place was way too clean. And it had some bama stuff on the walls! Lots more Auburn than bama, but I told the manager bama stuff had no business being in a Mama Gs!!
Auburn's final SEC record ... Take your guess.
I'm ready to start a petition to get Lebo fired. This has to end. It has to. We need to flood Jay Jacobs w/ letters/e-mails demanding a change.
No, when I was there it was a pretty nice restaurant, about the nicest in Auburn. Don't remember it being much of a happy hour place. It hasn't been Torbett's for years.
4-12
Jet, we beat LSU at home, that's it.
Don't worry, Sponge ... don't think it will be necessary.
Jet-do we play LSU again? if so, we get 2 SEC wins. Lebo keeps his job.
Stu,
You think we can win 4 SEC games? Who are we going to beat? LSU again, maybe. Who else?
we were 30 years apart, though.
Three SEC wins, 3-13.
I agree with Jay G ... 3-13.
Lebo ... adios.
Cincy, there was a catfish place on the right. It was there for a long long time.
wait, that's chocolate math.
Here
'Scuse me little whipper snapper, PF, if I am 21 years older than you, how were we 30 years apart!?
G'night y'all.
i go
I swear I can find five guys to play this team and hot more 3's than they do. I haven't played since college.
Watch out .. here comes Sassy Cincy!
Auburn will beat Arkansas and LSU, and should win the home game vs. Bama.
Thus the 4-12 prediction.
Stu,
I'd take it. I hope you are right.
it was a typo...I said it was chocolate math.
I might puke if I saw anything bama related in a Mama G's.
I'm going to bed, I have to get up at 6 tomorrow like a grown up, I'm not excited.
WTC ...I think the late shift at 5 Guys could play better than this.
Kidding you, P. I typed that while you were doing your chocolate math.
...and you don't look a day over 32.
I don't think we beat bama at all this year. We are uninspired. They are gaining confidence, we are losing what little we had.
Great job Lebo. You've fielded a team that
can't shoot the three
Has no big man
can't block out and rebound
can't play defense
Has no true point guard
The little train that couldn't.
Cincy, I was going to say 22.
On those positive notes, I think I will take my sassy self to bed.
Jay, looking forward to the article on Cam tomorrow.
Night, hotties!
Cincy - I remember the place, but I don't think you've got the name right yet.
I'm still thinking.
I found the game much more enjoyable with the students doing some of the broadcast. They were genuine. Our team is pitiful.
I'm out, too.
Gotta get to mass in the morn. I'm out as well.
Piece!
And this is why I'm glad we're a football school.
It was CL Torbett's. Same peeps as The Warehouse.
Nite all. Sorry I wasted a couple hours watching that game. I'm sick to my stomach, it was so ugly.
I think I'll go home now. I think that's enough work for one day.
Hungry Hunter was a great place in the late 70s and early 30s.
I don't know about you, but I am really tired of sucking.
it's pretty quiet in HABOTNville. I think I'll try to get some sleep.
Sweet dreams, Hotties!
THT- E-Bro is driving and we will be back in Chattanooga by 3am EST. Fun night of traveling from WV.
Good Morning Hotties all over the world (I'm lookin at you Aero and 2.0). Getting up at a "normal" time is no fun. I'll try not to make it a habit.
Good morning, Hotties! TGIF!!!
Conversation in ER already with a male nurse (bammer):
Nurse: Auburn has a great recruiting class this year.
Me: Yes, it's AUsome! The best they've had since I've lived here.
Nurse: It will be nice to have some competition other than UF.
Me: Competition? You had competition SIX years in a row!
Nurse: (sly grin) Six years? I don't know what you're talking about.
Me: It's funny how UAT beat AU two years in a row and the SIX years before that are completely forgotten. And, btw, UAT had PLENTY of competition this year.
Nurse: Yeah, AU played pretty hard, but UAT was just getting ready for UF.
How many other Hotties have had the same conversation? Stupid bammers.
Its easier to avoid the conversation all together. Every time a bammer talks to me I just look at them like a 2 year old you can't quite understand and say "aww, he's trying so hard" Then pat him on the head and say "bless his heart" Then I walk away.
I usually do avoid football conversations with bammers. He started it and he is a really nice guy (usually!).
I don't usually watch basketball until tourney time, but this season, I've been watching it a lot more. I still don't know a whole lot about it, but I do know that Auburn sucks. Of all the games I've watched this season, none of them play like Auburn. I just don't get it! How is that acceptable?
Sponge, your story around 9:39 last night was hysterical!!
good morning all, just though I would give you all a "lebo must go" before heading off to work.
Five days 'til Recruitmas!
Morning Hotties.
Luv - what I tend to do lately when approached by a Bammer that I even remotely think is going to try to talk to me, is I walk up to them and say "I breaka with thee, I breaka with thee, I breaka with thee". Then I throw dog poop on their shoes. That makes it official.
Good morning hotties!
Jay, great article on Cam Newton. I think Auburn will be just the place for him to develop both as a football player and as a man. I like that he and his family didn't try to blame his troubles on someone else. His dad said he learned from it, the whole family did, and he would grow from there. Very refreshing.
I love Recruitmas!!!
me too, Cincy!
