Coaching football at auburn is a lucrative endeavor

Hey everyone. So during my furlough, details were revealed surrounding salary revisions that (positively) affected the football staff.

Key theme: People gettin' rich

Most folks received a 10% bump. Here are the details.

GENE CHIZIK receives a raise of $200k per year ($1.9 million ---> $2.1 million)

GUS MALZAHN receives a raise of $150,000 per year ($350k ---> $500k)

TED ROOF RUSTED receives a raise of $37,000 per year ($370k ---> $407k)

TROOPER TAYLOR receives a raise of $32,000 per year ($320k ---> $352k)

TRACY ROCKER receives a raise of $30,000 per year ($300k ---> $330k)

JEFF GRIMES receives a raise of $29,000 per year ($290k ---> $319k)

CURTIS LUPER receives a raise of $26,000 per year ($260k ---> $286k)

TOMMY THIGPEN receives a raise of $25,000 per year ($250k ---> $275k)

JAY BOULWARE receives a raise of $21,000 per year ($210k ---> $231k)

PHILLIP LOLLEY receives a raise of $21,000 per year ($210k ---> $231k)

**My thoughts on this: Now, understand that I am someone who just ended my third one-week, mandatory, unpaid furlough during the past calendar calendar year. Many people in my tax bracket are feeling the sting of the country's economic depression recession in similar ways.

In that sense, throwing around 10 percent raises seems untoward.

There is justification. Surely this past football season stoked enthusiasm among the fan base. That leads to an increase in money raised, earned and gathered. So, in that sense, it's reasonable to give the football coaches a salary bump.

We all knew Malzahn was due. His alleged interest in jobs at Memphis and Louisiana Tech was far less serious than I expected, which led me to believe a lucrative financial package was being formulated behind the scenes. And that happened.

Still, a 42-percent raise? Seems unnecessarily steep to me.

Chizik now makes $2.1 million, which is reasonable given SEC context.

I always get skittish about re-upping contracts so soon. He signed the original deal a year ago, which provided him plenty of protection in the event Auburn elected to fire him before the contract's expiration. Had Auburn been awful last year, Jay Jacobs would not have approached Chizik to negotiate a lower buyout or salary.

Yet when Auburn plays (reasonably) well, Jacobs feels the need to sweeten Chizik's deal. It's reckless in a sense. Chizik isn't going anywhere. You know that. I know that. Jay Jacobs should know that.

Summary: Mostly reasonable. I don't think Malzahn deserves this kind of money yet.

As long as the profit is going back into the institution, I don't see a problem with it. Like so many other things, but increase in coaches salary versus their benifits/costs will be a bell curve. At some point you reach the point of dimensioning returns. For instance, if increase the salaries 10 fold, you wouldn't see a 10 fold increase in income.

During my recent trip to Oregon I was fortunate enough to get a chance to talk to an uber-rich individual. The discussion turned to the economy and how we would handle to deficit. I prodded him for a response by saying it was simple. We will just tax the heck out of rich folks to pay off the debt.

His response was what I expected. He said that you wouldn't get the money from him because most of his money is not in the U.S. and would not be because he couldn't afford the tax hit.

He also provided an example. He asked us what was the maximum tax rate that we have ever had in the U.S. I said 90 something percent. He said, correct. It was 96% in the 80s until Regan cut the taxes.

He then asked me how many people paid that rate. I didn't know. He responded that nobody paid it. Just like him, other uber-rich took their money elsewhere.

So, increasing taxes doesn't mean necessarily that you increase the amount of money you get. It is the same thing with coaches salaries, in a way, although the it isn't as much an increase as it is how much money the school would lose if the coaches left.

Excess monies are retained and can be expended by the directors and management team. As a public entity, it is tax exempt.

Non-profits can make a profit. Yes. They just can't spend it on anything. They can "disperse" it within and use it to improve/grow their organization and/or facilities.

So one of the managers just came by and said, "you sound sick." and I reply, "Do I really?" she says, "yes, you're getting a cold." and I say, "well I feel fine." She gives me a funny look and says, "we'll see tomorrow. just you wait, you'll have a cold." My question for the group is...does that count as a curse? and if so should I have to use sick time should I need it?

JGT, going back to your Lenten discipline...my mom always tells me when I give something up that Sunday is a feast day, so I don't have to give up whatever it is on that day. Technically, she's right, but I always tell her that I can easily give up anything for six days, so I don't see the point. When I give something up for Lent, I'm in for the whole time (which, with the Sundays, is actually 46 days).

Seanzie, you are typing as if you are coming down with a cold. You will have a cold tomorrow.

It never occurred to me before, but the term non-profit is misleading. They do make a profit. It is what they are allowed to do with the profit that gives them the non-profit status. Never really considered that.

Alls I know, ChocoScott, is that I'm going to make this vegetarian thing work through Easter.

Beyond that? Maybe or maybe not.

I guess this is Catholic Vegetarianism, as I see fish is considered a no-no with proper vegetarians.

I still eat mudbugs and tilapia.

Blogger michael said...

My cousin is a full-time "vegetarian", but she eats fish. I guess she considers fish dumb enough to devour without feeling bad?

12:14 PM
Blogger michael said...

And lets face it, fish are pretty dumb. They are closer to a potato on the intelligence scale than a dog I would think.

12:18 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

Are fish sticks on that diet? those are the best part of a fish...the sticks

12:19 PM
Blogger michael said...

I am pretty sure the main ingredient in fish sticks is human flesh. I guess it is more of a cannibalism issue than a vegetarian one.

12:24 PM
Blogger michael said...

Here is my question, and I may have mentioned it before here: why can't a vegetarian eat something like a cow tongue? After all, removing the cow tongue isn't fatal, right? What if there was a whole farm of tongueless cows that were allowed to keep on living?

Same goes for maybe just removing one leg of the cow or something like that. If it isn't fatal, then I say you don't have to feel bad.

12:26 PM
Blogger michael said...

Also, one day I plan on starting a farm called "Natural Endings Farm" I will buy a bunch of old animals and only harvest their meat after they die of natural causes. I am sure vegetarians will be really into it. The meat will be pretty gross though.

Seanzie,
If you are getting a cold, put a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ears. I swear this keeps you from getting a cold.

Don't ask me how I know this.

If you are getting a cold, I have the answer for you:
The solution to pollution is dilution.
That is ABSOLUTELY the best free advice a doctor ever gave me.
It means this; go to the drugstore and buy a bottle of saline nasal rinse. When you start to feel stuffy or sick, use it constantly. It cleans out all the yuck from your nasal passages and prevents it from growing. You'll feel better in no time.

12:48 PM

ChocoScott...
No way. Us Southern Baptists are a somber, brooding lot. No merriment allowed (aside from eating meat).

12:49 PM
Blogger Norm said...

ScoCho - I wasn't raised Southern Baptist but gradually arrived there. So, I'm not a teetotaler. I have a separate fridge in the garage with a very specific purpose. However, as a mid-40's white guy, I do not dance. It has nothing to do with my denomination, it's just the way it is.

12:49 PM
Blogger michael said...

cincy - how do you know that?

12:49 PM
Blogger michael said...

I used to take zicam to decrease the amount of time a cold lasted. I think it worked. But one time I took it, and then I couldn't taste anything for a couple of weeks. That really freaked me out. I checked up on the internets and found that some people permanently lost taste from zicam. Mine came back, but just be warned and all that stuff.

12:51 PM
Blogger Norm said...

MJT - you have no taste, that's all there is to it.

12:56 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

I have used the Zicam nasal swabs which doesn't have the same effect on your taste, but I have found the hydrogen peroxide works much better and has no side effects. Unless of course you get some in your hair and then you become a blonde.

12:56 PM
Blogger michael said...

I normally wipe my hair with my snot rags cincy, so that will be a hard habit to break. I better steer clear of the hydrogen peroxide in the nose.

Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Norm, even though I only know you from the HABOTN, the product-specific fridge and the dancing policy do not come as a surprise to me. As I'm sure you know, I was just kidding with you.

By the way, for Lent, you don't necessarily have to give something up. You can also choose to take on some sort of discipline (actually, it's not mandatory to participate at all). Obviously, this year I have taken on messing with Baptists.

1:07 PM
Blogger Norm said...

ScoCho - I knew that and take nothing personally here so no worries. As much as I dish it out in the virtual and the real world, I have to be able to take it too.

I think you are right about Chizik's raise...if he was smart he would have forgone the 200 k raise and spread it out amongst his assistants. Malzahn can easily get a head coaching job and they should have offered him the 200k-400k increase to promise to stay 3 years. I think he is worth it.
