Furlough Day Five: Thursday

I am on a mandated and unpaid furlough as required by the Advertiser's parent company, Gannett. As such, I am not permitted to participate in blog-related activities for one week.

So we have these pre-loaded entries. That's all.

It's up to you to keep the HABOTN fresh until I return on Sunday, Feb. 21.

Have a nice day.

ps: I'll be watching Gretchen Bleiler win the gold in women's half-pipe tonight if you want to enjoy vicariously.

Thanks Eddie for the salary link. Looks like Auburn is trying to do what it takes to keep these coaches, which I agree with(not that they care if I agree).
Kristina this is a big Howdy Mam to you!
Jet I was going on a tyrate about the BB team but decided it ain't worth it.

9:41 AM
Blogger Jet said...

I'm past tirades on the hoops team. It's all frustrating.

In my heart, I believe it's taking the easy way out to put it all on Lebo's feet. Having said that, he needs go because we need new energy.

Lebo has been bashed for not "promoting" the program. What does it say about us that we have to beg Auburn people to support the basketball program?

Kevin Scarbinsky's blog this a.m. is troubling. You can read it here: http://blog.al.com/kevin-scarbinsky/2010/02/scarbinsky_auburn_hoops_still.html

The margin of error for Auburn basketball is incredibly narrow. This sets the program up to fail -- no matter who the coach.

9:52 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Lets just can the program. When you put a crappy product on the floor on a consistent basis you get what we have gotten the last few years. I was there in '98 & '99 and if you put a good team on the floor that is competitive, people will show up and cheer loudly. I'm to the point that I don't even watch the games anymore because they are just a train wreck to watch. My roommate at the time was the head trainer during the above era and I had to pick him up at the airport several times after a game when the team flew in and after wins, you would find several fans there to cheer the team as they got off the plane at midnight or later. Auburn can be great in Basketball if it tries. The new arena does not set Auburn up to fail, I respectfully disagree. A new direction in leadership is needed. Don't blame the fans IMO.

10:02 AM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

I agree in part with Jet and Eddie. I agree that the program needs new energy. A new arena provides some new energy, but it's not enough. Most fans are not making >$500,000 a year plus bonuses and incentives. Why should they continue to spend money week in and week out and year in and year out on something that isn't improving?

10:09 AM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

Jet, shouldn't the margin of error be even narrower for the football program?

10:10 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

Very good statement by Tiger Woods.
He did seem sincere and took total blame as he should have.
In time this to will pass.

10:24 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Eddie ... let me see if I can explain it better. Auburn has never sent the message that it cared about basketball until the new arena. (Showing up when you're 15-0 doesn't meet my definition of "caring.") I've been for a new arena for years.

What sets Auburn up to fail is limiting recruiting through AAU contacts. I'm not laying the whole blame at the feet of the fans, or even half of it. It's amazing how much better a team -- any team -- plays when it's being supported than when it's not.

And I agree we need new leadership because Lebo's lost this program. If and when his successor arrives, we need to treat it the same way we treat football -- get behind it, rather than say "Impress me first, then I'll pay attention."

10:26 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Luv ... I don't think so. Football has a solid foundation. When we're down, we can get back up in a hurry. We all want football to take the ultimate step. Basketball doesn't have that foundation.

10:28 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I do not understand how the AAU is such a force in college basketball. I do not keep up with basketball very much. I have always watched some basketball, mainly during March Madness but never followed recruiting. Do all major basketball shools use the AAU coaches as their main recruiting. If so this is something the NCAA needs to look into and control if they are going to cherry pick a program to put sanctions against because of some tie back to a school.

10:34 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Thanks for all the bday wishes.

I think the coaches deserved a raise. They definitely have turned things around in a very short time. They recruited like we have never seen before and there is a buzz about Auburn that has been missing for a while.

10:47 AM
Blogger CHB said...

AAU has a lot of influence because of all the endorsements it has started to receive. The NCAA needs to step in asap before the game is completely ruined. I would also think that state athletic associations would do something. They step in for baseball and limit off season leagues that high school kids can play in.

10:50 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

Thanks CH=B. I do believe if the NCCA is going to stick their toe in the water in regards to AAU coaches they should take a dive in and keep it clean and not just select one team to punish. I am sure every AAU coach has some tie back to some college in basketball. I bet all of them played for some college team.

Hi hotties,

Blogging from the lobby of the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Nashville. Pretty swanky place and free internet (if you can handle the country music playing in the lobby) Waiting for hubby to get out of a meeting so we can meet our daughter for lunch :)

Sorry I missed hating this morning. Any bombshells?

And did wtc ever share his conversation with the former coach that he spoke of the other day? Just wondering if I missed it.

11:05 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is great to see the coaches get significant raises, particularly Malzahn. That salary won't keep him from a major job opportunity, but it will certainly make him think twice about heading to a lesser program.

11:53 AM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

Jet, I guess what I'm trying to say is that since the university puts so much money into the football program, shouldn't it be held to higher standard?

11:55 AM
Blogger Norm said...

He could've said any number of things and I doubt I'd have been surprised either way. He screwed up in a colossal way, got caught, everyone knows about it, and he's sorry. I think I believe him, I want to think he's sincere. The game is certainly more entertaining to me with him than without him, but I watched it long before he came onboard so I'll continue to watch without him whenever I have the opportunity.

I absolutely agree 100% that Ellin and the kids should be left alone.

11:58 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Luv ... absolutely.

My point about hoops is that if we are handcuffed in any in basketball, it's disastrous. In football, we have ways to work around it.

12:01 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

What Tiger did is between him, his family and God. They are the ones he truly has to answer to. In the grand scheme of things, golf and multi-million dollar sponsorships don't really matter. I just hope he is truly remorseful.

12:01 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

Jet, gotcha. Thanks.

12:02 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Norm ... I'm sorta at the same place. He said all the things he was supposed to say.

Going back to rehab indicates to me that he's serious. He could have said he will continue to seek outpatient treatment as begins to resume his life. He's not doing that.

If he wanted to rid me of all my skepticism -- he could skip the 2010 season and continue treatment, then play in the Ryder Cup this fall as a goodwill gesture toward the game and his peers.

Ultimately, he apologized to the folks he needed to today -- he used the "cheated" word, which I presume is a big one and acknowledged he has a long way to go.

12:08 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

From this point, I will boycott watching matches Tiger is in and make it a point to watch those he isn't in.

After I single-handedly manipulate golf TV ratings, I will sit back and revel in the destruction I have wrought.

Get some Tiger!

12:12 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

I agree, Jet. He should take this season off and continue with rehab. No way is he ready to go back on tour.

12:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't think we know enough about Woods to speculate about what is best. If I ever see someone come out and admit they have been cheating before they get caught, I will believe they are remorseful. Until then, it seems more likely that they are sorry they got caught.

Jet- Back on basketball. I've heard several different things regarding AAU recruiting. I heard that the ban is up and that we can recruit these guys, but we just aren't. I've heard it said that Lebo is fueling this AAU rumor thing to save his job. Does anyone have real knowledge on this issue? I've heard it played both ways and it would be nice to have it cleared up.

As for Tiger, he said things that needed to be said according to his rehab. Is he sorry, yes, is he sorrier that he got caught? Only time will tell. Hopefully the guy is dead serious in setting things right in his own family. Children make this whole thing so much more severe than Tiger just being a cheater on his marriage vows. I am a huge Tiger fan and I will continue to pull for him. Very few so called "Role Models" are ever the way they are perceived to be. Most all have flaws. Growing up, Dale Murphy was my hero and I probably would have been upset to learn he had done something like this, but to be honest, my true role model and the two people I admired most growing up and wanted to be like were and are my Mom and Dad. That is the way it should be IMO. Tiger doesn't owe anyone but his family an apology, but just make right by what you say since you are going public with.

Sorry for the rant.

Steve...
The pronoun 'his' was used, denoting it was a male. Why would anyone want to spy on a dude?

1:20 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Eddie ... apparently we can't have any recruiting through Komara teams, period. NCAA ban or not. Reporter for another site posted the other day that says he's seen the letter that limits the program beyond that. I'm for changing coaches, but we've got to get this figured out, or it's like playing football with 9 guys or baseball three infielders and two outfielders.

1:26 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

There's a black hole in my heart where basketball used to be.

Blogger digger4au said...

Again I was a big Lebo supporter and last year I thought he had reached a point where we would see Auburn going to the NCAA starting this year. This years team is basically a senior team with his recruits. It just didn't happen and I see no reason to think it will happen with him in charge. Another year would be a big waste leaving him in charge. It is time to move on without Lebo.

I honestly don't care about Tiger's private life. He isn't a religious figure or and elected official so what does it matter? I care about Tiger the golfer. I watch tiger because he is a golfer. What he does in his time away from golf is not my business. As someone said earlier that is between him, his family and God. What he is accused of doing only affects him and his family. Therefore it's none my or anyone else's business. When he comes back to golf I will still be a Tiger Woods fan, but only because of his golf skills. I wouldn't choose to have a personal relationship with him.

Just one man's opinion.

2:03 PM

Personally, I don't watch people such as Woods because I believe it basically condones his behavior. People like that are responsible for the deterioration of the American family, which affects all of us.

SteveFc, I agree in a way, but we can't blame another person for our actions. It's just like the movement in the past 10+ years to blame ones violent actions on TV or video games. I've watched all kinds of tv with violence and such ever since I was 4-5 yrs old. I've never committed a crime like that. The reason is because my parents taught me right from wrong. So we can't blame Tiger or people like him for the down fall of the American family. It's the American family's responsibility to do what is right.

2:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't necessarily believe examples cause the behavior, but I do believe in not condoning it. I do believe in forgiveness, but I do also believe in judging in terms of whom I choose to associate with.

I also believe we affect others with our actions. We can choose to contribute to society or take from it. Personally, I find that contributing to society ends up being better for all in the long run.

He has never claimed to be a role model. He is just someone who is pretty damn good at a particular sport.

I have heard that even though he has been a life long AU fan, as are his parents, he was going to commit to UAt. He and Regions have become close friends over the past year and want to play together. When Reegions changed his mind to AU, Dismukes called his presser off. I would not expect a commit form him this weekend, but it would be nice to get one. AU wil then have two of the top in state linemen in the state.
