Your Friday Thread

Hey everyone. I am in Kentucky handling some family business, which means my ability to blog is essentially zero.

I'm on dial-up. Forgive the blog's rough appearance.

I'll soon begin writing a story for Sunday about the Tigers' 2010 signing class. Should I deem it an overall success? Yeah, probably.

For the guy who emailed and ripped me for covering the "negative" news associated Marcus Lattimore, let me break some news: The sun doesn't shine every day. Look out the window.

Feel free to comment about whatever strikes your fancy.

Have a nice day.

  1. Sorry about that email Jay G, you know how I get all upset over recruiting.

    JG's keeping the interwebs confused.

They can't figger out whether he's a homer or a hater.

Some folks can't handle objective observations and reporting.

  3. JGT

I gotta know, are the guys from supersport 930 as they seem when they do the segment? Also you have got to campfire with Ben Ingram when the Braves go through Montgomery, since he such a 'legend' at on the vent.

I get a kick out of those segments.

  4. I know you've said this before Jay, but what part of Kentucky is "home".

Hoopie, I'm still hanging on to my belief that JGT is little by little becoming a homer. How can you NOT love Auburn?

  5. Anonymous9:28 AM

    RK calling JG a hater?

    That's funny righd 'dere.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I was born in Louisville, I met Wifey in Lexington. Lots of good stuff all around Kentucky ...

    ReplyDelete
  7. How was covering the story on Lattimore negative??

    ReplyDelete
  8. If only it were me who sent that email...

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sunshine and rain ... Harvest of grain ... He's my friend.

    ReplyDelete
  10. From Louisville but a UK fan? Must have made you unpopular.

I hope you enjoy your time at home.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh Hoopie, you'd miss me if I weren't here.

    ReplyDelete
  12. My wife was born in Louisville so during basketball season we watch a lot of Cards games...this year hasn't been as fun.

Wake ...JG hasn't slipped up and admitted it even once in the 3 years I've been around here.

We may have to give up and believe him.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Wake, I agree! As long as Jay G has been around Auburn athletics, how can he NOT have acquired a love for it?

He does an EXCELLENT job of being objective. I don't understand the criticism. Well, I guess I should - it comes from bammers.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Luv,

The only negative I see is Stephen Davis being involved in the show.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Luv -- I'll just post the email.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Great title to article (sarcasm)….Auburn has best recruiting class in 25 years and you hit the negative. Fine job.

With biased media coverage in Alabama always trying to create perception, Auburn always has the much higher “hill to climb” than UA on the national scale.

Although you’re fairly objective with AU, many times you come across negatively; as if you would prefer not being AU’s beat writer.

    Just an observation.

RK , I suspect you've been real busy because you haven't had the time for that cynicism we love.

No worries tho' PF is taking up the slack.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Why does it always have to be us vs them for some Auburn fans?

There was no need to even drop the evil name in the email to Jay G.

    That stuff drives me crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Certainly not the most aggressive email ever -- or even in the top 20% -- but to rip me after I just wrote 135 column inches about Auburn in one day seems odd.

    ReplyDelete
  21. WTH????? What a jerk. I can't speak for all the Hotties, but I don't get where that person is coming from at all. You are sportswriter. You cover sports news. Lattimore's story was news.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jay, maybe the sun doesn't shine in your world every day, but some of us prefer to live in our own special happy happy joy joy world. Don't destroy my delusions.

Jet ....pay cash money to the gate agent for a seat up front. You are in for some bumpy rides today.

I'm glad I don't fly anymore. Air travel ceased being glamourous in the late 90's.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hoopie,

You and Aero seemed to be the only ones it got to, maybe you were just more sensitive to my "cynicism" during football season?

It's not Haiti, it's just college football.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Kentucky basketball fan is almost as bad as Bammer football guy.

I got one at my church and is a deacon with me He wears his UK stuff and calls every ticky tack thing in pickup games. On top of that, after every game he preaches about how he never fouls, but get hacked all day, all the while I have bruises from hacks I didn't call from him.

I was like "dude, John Wall is not your teammate and coach Cal is not calling your for rules help, shut up.

Not everything from Kentucky is all that great.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hoopie, I fly to Oregon Sunday. Should I be scared?

    ReplyDelete
  27. "Oh the sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home...."

    sing with me JG!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm not a big fan of travel by air or land. It stopped being fun after about age 25 or so.

I just want to get there, I hate the actual trip.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Video from recruitmas morning from the AU football offices:

    ReplyDelete
  31. i haven't been on an airplane since i flew from Lexington the Houston, then from Baton Rouge back to Lexington for the 2001 AU-LSU game. fun trip. crappy game.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Business travel got old after my first business trip. It keeps getting older. It sounds neat and occasionally you get to see a bit of the area you travel to, but most of the time you spend the entire time working or spending quality time with other employees. It is stressful.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Flying probably safer than driving a toyota.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Haha "135 inches" about Auburn, I love it.

There are always going to be haters. You do a great job and all of us appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ah, my old Kentucky home.... I lived in Paducah for several years.

One of two places I've lived that I would move back to in an instant (Auburn being the other)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I haven't flown in about a year and a half. Before that, I usually traveled to Oregon about 5 or 6 times a year for about 10 days per trip. It got extremely old.

    ReplyDelete
  37. At least the email wasn't of the "OMGWTF CUT US SUM SLACK BAMMAR HOMER!!!11" variety.

Best thing about Jay is that he's been on the Auburn beat all these years, and I have yet to detect a trace of bitterness in his columns or his articles. That hasn't always been the case for his Mobile brethren.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I hate flying. I am tall with bad knees and can't afford first class. Sitting in those tiny seats is pretty painful. I always seem to fly last minute so I can't get exit row seats.

I love driving. I had alot of great trips between here and Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'd rather have Jay G write the way he does than have some of the homeriffic stuff I've seen in articles out of B-ham.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I used to travel at least twice a month or more.

I have the fortune of having a job where I got to see fun things. I have been to 16 or 17 ballparks, etc. Those types of trips are still fun, but since I got married it got old.

It is hard to juggle travel and home stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous9:48 AM

Take it from a converted Bammer. They hate it when AU folks ignore them. Therefore ignore them except to ridicule and hate them. It's insulting to even compare AU to them. Never compare.

Fans like the guy in that email that worry about the perception of "climbing hills" just feed the Bammer's demented psyche.

When we just worry about us ..we are better than them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am less bitter now than ever. I enjoy my job more than ever. Them's the facts.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Here is what I don't get, people like Cecil Hurt are unbiased, but JGT is a homer, then he is a hater?

    WTH.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anonymous9:50 AM

IV ...and she's been gone too long.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Big Bird, I watched that video last night and enjoyed it. You all will like it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. For those of you who perused the Lemonier announcement fark over on TigerDroppings, I've recently added a contribution.

    Ahem.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Glad your liking your job.

Thats awesome stupup, I have 3 things I want to accomplish in my life, one of them is seeing a game in every teams ballpark. My list is pretty short right now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I know, I know, I know....

    ReplyDelete
  50. JGT, I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your job. I would imagine that means there is far less negative energy flowing around the AU Athletics Dept (and especially the football offices) than in recent years. While I'm sure it made for good newsgathering opportunities, I don't know if I could deal with that kind of bad vibe day in and day out.

Get some, my friend. You've earned it!

Freep .. I spewed my coffee! LMAO.

    ReplyDelete
  52. freep, that is excellent.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Derp, I meant to say JGT maintains his objectivity without a trace of bitterness.

@Freep We gotta stop that Inside Trout! I love Joe Kines.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks Hoop. When I first saw that fark thread, that's the image that immediately popped into my mind.

Hard to believe that was just three years ago. Seems more like 30.

    ReplyDelete
  55. That video of signing day was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Freep that was excellent.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hotties,
I heard the Crap Cecil Hurt spwed out about trying to compare CGC to Saban not (his) first year but Saban now to CGC's first year and it was pathetic! That's like appels to oranges...

I have a Stat for you and this is FACTS:
Saban 4-4 in the SEC his first year
Chizik- 3-5 in the SEC his first year....WOW what a big difference!!!!!

I just wish they would stop trying to say Alabama's Beat Writers are not Homers but Auburn's are...PLEZZZZZZZ!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. JGT - That makes me so happy to hear that you are enjoying covering our AU Tigers. (Our being the Hotties, not yours personally).

    ReplyDelete
  59. "Can't we all just get along"?
Rodney King- after the Beat down!!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Thanks again, guys. I have my fun from time to time.

BTW, when that interview took place, I just happened to be sitting with my best AU friend, sipping single malt scotch, watching Kines endear himself to the ESPN viewing public on the widescreen TV above the fireplace near the bar at the Hotel at Auburn University.

    Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Freep's "Fark" was so good they took it down already....or am I the only one who can't see it?

    ReplyDelete
  62. rats, that video requires Silverlight which I can't install on the work PC. And I apparently can't install it on my U3

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just enjoy writing. It's what I like doing.

    ReplyDelete
  64. That probably a good thing Jay G, you might have picked a poor profession if you didn't like writing.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I like old maps. Unfortunately, I don't get paid for it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Scotto Choco, you workin' today? I may be dropping by shortly.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Great shop. Freep.

And writer Tate is a cynical Homer. That's the conclusion we have come to, right?

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think we should rename Jay "Hater Tater" or has someone already done that? I still can't figure out how that was negative reporting. I feel like I get great, very unbiased reporting from Jay. Guess everyone has to have something to complain about.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Just a quick check in before we head out to the Grand Hotel. I don't think we have internet capabilities out there (without having to pay for it anyway) so I am probably out of touch for a couple of days.

Hope everyone has an awesome weekend and you get to do just what you want.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Jay G (don't Hate just Appreciate) Tate.... that's the ticket!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Cincy are you in my neck of the Woods?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Cincy - have a blast. Just remember, my part of the omelet has no vegetative matter, so that bite is for me.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm at my sister's in Fairhope right now. We are heading out to the Grand in a few hours and will stay until Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  74. THT,
What do you want in your part of the omelet - just meat and cheese?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Cincy very nice... I'm in Mobile stuck at work..... BTW my wifey graduated from USA in Nursing BSN and MSN and now works in the Mother Baby Unit at USA Children's and Women's Hospital

    ReplyDelete
  76. Good Friday Morning Hotties! My busy week accumulated so many extra hours that I got to take today off. Unfortunately I missed the Signing Day excitement. Happy to see Auburn do so well.

I was looking at next year's schedule trying to decide which away games to attend. I'm thinking Kentucky might be a nice trip. JGT do you have any recommendations for hotels to reserve? Also think a trip to Ole Miss might be in order too.

I don't have any problem with JG's coverage. I humorously questioned JG for saying that he is interviewing coaches that played against Newton. It was a joke that didn't go very well. I apologized, he didn't care. BFD.

I moved on, he moved on. Yours are still in a wad.

In fact yours are in a wad for being criticized for hurling BS accusations. Would you move on, unwad them sometime soon and quit with your BS?

    Thank you.

  79. AUn,
I graduated from USA in 1981 and worked in the Emergency Admit Unit at USA. I loved it! But, I haven't worked in over 20 years. I have several friends who keep wanting me to get back into nursing. Don't think that is going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Jay G Tate work, at it's best, is some times drudgery but I always believed it was made better by doing something you enjoyed. I enjoyed my many different jobs in Engineering. It would be really sad to be stuck in a job you really didn't like. I have met some people of that nature. Many wouldn't be happy doing any kind of work and were very sad people.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I watched some of that ustream last night with Mario, Cam Newton, Stevens, Isom, TZac, Zac, Savage, et al. Seems like Newton has made some friends on the team. They were playing Madden. It's amazing what can be done in this computer era.

  82. Hoopie hates young people.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I was wondering about @KY, too, Kathy. I was thinking I'd try one SEC away game each year until I've been to each stadium. Octobers are awful busy, though.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Michael,
Why are you yelling? All you have to do is ask nicely. :)

    ReplyDelete
  85. We haven't been to an away game since the AU-FSU game in 1984. I don;t think we could top that game, but I would like to see some of the other stadiums.

    ReplyDelete
  86. What am I doing wrong!
I set up a link in HTML in Word and matched it asgainst the HTML formular all looked right. I pasted it in this box and it showed up with all the gobalygook formular and not as a link.

    ReplyDelete
  87. For me I'm going to try and get to the Clemson or USCe games. I had other reasons prior to signing day, but now want to see 1. D.J. Howard patrol the sidelines and 2. Marcus Lattimore either a. Get mowed down repeatedly or b. witness Lattimore catch 20 passes out of the backfield for minimal yardage.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Hotel I'd want

The Radisson Suites on Richmond Road.

If you're approaching Commonwealth Stadium, you want to approach via Alumni Dr. That means you want hotels on Richmond Rd., which is easily accessible from Alumni.

That's your travel tip for today!

(p.s. The Holiday Express on Virginia Ave. is good, too.)

    ReplyDelete
  89. You want a negative spin on missing Lattimore then read this: Tigers Lose Crown Jewel

This ran in Wednesday's paper here in Florence.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I'm not too smart I didn't stay at the Holiday Express. Maybe I should have.

    ReplyDelete
  91. UPDATE: The "Radisson Suites" are now the Doubletree Suites.

    Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Thanks for the tip, Travel Agent Tate. I've sent it to my email for future reference.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Thanks JGT!

Sorry if this has already been posted, but this is a youtube of the Dyer signing. His coach has some really nice things to say about him and Dyer's speech was very heartfelt. Great kid!

  94. Kathy, "if the good Lord is willing and the creek don't rise," we are planning on going to the UK game and Clemson. If your away game buddies can't make it, you can hitch a ride with us! I'm sure we'll find a way to make the Ole Miss game too. MSU will probably be a same day trip.

    ReplyDelete
  95. LUV - I thought you had season tickets? Won't you be at all the home games?

    ReplyDelete
  96. SC, your link doesn't work!

    ReplyDelete
  97. We'll be at all the home games, yes. The ones I was talking about in my previous post are away games.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Thanks Luv! Don't we play Clemson at home? The MSU game is Thursday night. I haven't decided yet about that one yet.

    ReplyDelete

Cincy, I will get to the Grand probably about when you are departing. I should be there around 9:00 or 9:30 on Sunday morning. Family except for my son and I will be there starting Saturday evening. Hope you enjoy your time there (and your omelet). Maybe we'll cross paths.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Anyway,

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY 2.0!!!!!!!

  106. SC, We are leaving about 11 or so Sunday morning. Hope you enjoy your night on the Battleship with the Cub Scouts. My husband and son did that also. Fun times.

I am going to give you a quick call soon about Thursday. Anytime better than another?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Call anytime, Cincy. I've got a couple of people coming in to look at stuff today, but I don't know exactly when they're coming.

Regarding the battleship, the main thing I can't forget to pack is a pair of ear plugs. That many dads in one place will be a major snore-fest.

    ReplyDelete
  108. nope, IV. She's all growed up so I'll leave that to her discretion.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Btw, thanks for the link to the vid, Kathy. I am becoming more of a Dyer fan all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  110. That is exactly the thing my husband complained about! He doesn't snore, but he said all those dads' snoring in a tin can was deafening!

    ReplyDelete
  111. I don't understand the "negative" side of the Latt situation. We didn't get the guy, so what. We had a great class (some would say the best in our history). We got another 5* RB that many consider to be a better back. As for that other article posted about us losing our crown jewel...what a joke of an article.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Everyone is already talking about away games!! Who is going to A-Day?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Scotto Chocco

I found the place, and had just got pulled into a parking spot, but got a call and had to go. I know where it is now, and will schedule another visit.

    ReplyDelete
  114. THT,
April 17 and we will be there!

    ReplyDelete
  115. thanks, Cincy/Coffee. Hmmm, I'll be in NYC the prior weekend and have to work the following weekend. That could be tiring for an old geezer like me. But the gravitational pull towards Samford Hall may be too much to resist.

    ReplyDelete
  116. 2.0 will be home by then. She may want to go, though it won't be for the football.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

Unlike those trailer people, AU fans have a life outside of football.

    Is that blasphemous?

    ReplyDelete
  125. OK, I finally got to finish the article SC linked. Regardless of whether he writes for Auburn sports, he's a bammer. He should have just waited until the end of the day to write that article then maybe it might have sounded a tad more objective.

  136. THT, I think your prediction is off a little. We had that many last year.

Would anyone like to designate an official "HABOTN" tail-gate spot for A-Day? If anyone is familiar with the parking lot beside the business building there are several grassy areas where tents can be set up for A-Day. We did it last year and it was very easy to get in and out of.

  143. Luv,
Yes, the writer of that article is very bammeresque. I was fuming when I read that Wednesday. My wife learned more about recruiting than she ever cared to know during my rant.

The Times Daily/Decatur Daily (same beat writers) are not known for objective coverage of AU & UAT. Here was their Bama headline from the same issue: Allen’s letter notably missing.

Arguably a much bigger loss for Bama (especially since, unlike Lattimore he was actually committed) but not nearly the negativity of "Auburn loses crown jewel"

    ReplyDelete
