Hey everyone. Birthday Sleepover 2010® is in the books. That was six 8-year-old girls, two cupcakes each, unlimited Disney Channel and enough plush animals to create a well-stocked zoo.My goal today? Get to Talladega Superspeedway and watch some racin'.
So I'll be around the HABOTN, but I'll be posting from the media center adjacent to Pit Road. If a few of you are planning to watch the race, I'll post occasional behind-the-scenes updates.
If you're not into racin', I understand.

Johnny Sauter was the first guy to lose it in the Lap 83 incident, but he was bumped by Kyle Busch. The Sauter people are trying to get that car back on the track. Good luck.

I am not a big fan of NASCAR racing and never watch any other kind.
ReplyDeleteI do follow it some and pull for Kasey Kahne. I did for years pull for Bill Elliott. I have been to 1 race in Atlanta and 2 at Talledega,
Usually check in on the race 2 or 3 times and try to catch the finish.

ReplyDeleteWent to Talladega once in my life. I saw the 'Busch" race, and the Auburn Car came in 7th. I did the race of champions after that. I had more fun watching drunk a guy stand on the first row and flip Bobby Labonte the bird EVERY LAP.
ReplyDeleteOf course the one big Dega race I go to, there was not one wreck. They just ran in circles all day long. Not what I expected. Glad I went, I won't go back.
Of course, everything I touch sporting wise turns to garbage. The NYC trip this week has been a bust. Maybe the Braves can help me salvage the trip tonight.

ReplyDeleteI'm trying to watch this race and it is just pointless. The winner of this race will be lucky, not because he is a better driver and that is the flaw with the sport. It has very little entertainment appeal until maybe the last few laps. Until then, if you are watching, you are hoping for a crash. I guess I'll never get this sport.

ReplyDeleteI'm on the fence about whether its a sport or not. But if you don't think there is a great amount of skill involved with these drivers you've got it all wrong.
ReplyDeleteThe restrictor plate races do have a little bit of luck involved. But being able to read the draft and get your car where it needs to be is definitely a skill.

ReplyDeleteThat's an individual decision, but I'll tell you this. I gained a helluva lot of respect for those guys after doing the Richard Petty Driving Experience in Atlanta.
Did nine laps in what was essentially an ARCA car. Got up to 149 miles an hour, and my heart was pounding out of my chest.
When I finished, it dawned on me that I was scared to death, going about 50 mph slower than the guys who do it on Sundays. There were about 5 other cars on the track, and we were all spread out. On Sundays, there are 42 other cars, often about a foot apart.
If golf's a sport, NASCAR definitely is.
Nascar require skill...yes, but so does video games. The difference is the video game won't kill you.

I agree that Nascar is a competition that requires great skill, but it is one of the only so call "sports" where the best that day actually may not win.
Nascar requires great skill, and if that is a sport than flying in the blue angels is just as "competitive". Anyways, I know there are several on the other side of this, but that's my feeling on it. Also, restrictor plate racing is retarded. Let's make sure that every car is completely equal and all go the same speed. How many lead changes today....exactly. Honk if you haven't lead a lap today at Dega should be the new slogan.

Like I said I don't have a particularly strong opinion one way or the other. But I think its hilarious that you think golf takes more athletic ability.
ReplyDeleteDriving fast in a circle for 5 laps, not too much athletic ability required. Doing it for 4 hours is another story.
They are both in the same category if you ask me. Right on the edge. They both take a great amount of skill, but don't require a great amount of conditioning or the like.
My favorite golfer is Craig Stadler and my favorite driver is Jimmy Spencer. Yeah, they're retired but still my faves. I'm an athlete and they remind me of myself so golfers and drivers are definitely athletes.

ReplyDeleteI can practice all day long at golf everyday and still have no chance at playing on the PGA Tour. If given the best equipment in Nascar, my odds are much better that I end up in a Nascar race.
ehyou- I don't know a ton of racing, but I know enough to be deadly. People at work are obsessed with it, so always get a lively debate. It is always funny that Golf is the #1 sport brought into play when talking about Nascar as a sport.

ReplyDeleteI agree there is a large amount of luck in restrictor plate races. But a considerably less in a normal track. Of course you have to get lucky to avoid a getting taken out, but beyond that there isn't much luck involved in most cases.
I still say golf and racing are in the same boat. If one is a sport they both are.

What makes an athlete? To me, it's three things.
ReplyDelete1. Physical skill (strength, agility, endurance).
2. Mental Acumen (decision making, will)
3. Competition (venue, sanctioning)
Race Car drivers, NASCAR included, and Jockeys, possess all three. Luck is involved in any sport. Don't discount the entire sport because luck is a factor. If a soccer game can be won 1-0 off of a crazy deflection that had little to do with the player's skill or ability, a race can be won by someone who avoided a wreck or chose the right line.
One thing to me about an athlete is that they are typically well rounded in regards to other sports. What I mean by that is a good portion of say football players are usually pretty good at other sporting events. Maybe not great at them but still competitive. Not saying that NASCAR drivers can't do other thing, but I would be willing to be that not many are good at say basketball or baseball. Just my opinion and I could be totally wrong. I may not have completely articulated what I wanted to say but I think most of you get what I am trying to say.
ReplyDeleteOn that note I played basketball with Lorenzo Diamond one time. He is a an athlete. He could dribble, shoot and do just about anything else he wanted. He was the biggest guy out there. Unfortunately for me I was the best player on my team so I had to guard him. I'm 5'll" 190 and he was something like 6'4-6" 250+. You can probably figure out how that went.

ReplyDeleteI am hard pressed to call race car drivers athletes in the normal sense of overall sports, team or individual. They are skilled at what they do and can make split second mental decisions and have to me in pretty good shape.

Proof that race car drivers are athletes
While I think the whole debate over if something deserves to be called a sport or somebody an athlete is pointless (why does it really matter), I'll give mad props to guys who showcase an incredible amount of endurance in anything they do.
ReplyDeleteLance Armstrong (and cyclists in general) is one of those guys. To race across a country for three straight weeks, 100-110 miles a day, eight or so of those days up steep mountains. Well...those guys have my respect.
Besides that...I think what they do is definitely a sport and requires some athleticism or freakish physical capabilities.
I don't like Kyle only because I don't like Kurt only because he disrespected Jimmy Spencer. If you disagree I don't really want to hear it.

ReplyDeleteNASCAR racing takes more luck than most any other sport and today is proof. The best drover got knocked put of the race. It is a sport for sure, just one that is tough to follow. Drag racers get much more props from me. I acknowledge that in any sports the best team disentangle always win, but it probably happens way more in this sport than any other.

ReplyDeleteI was at the Braves game tonight. I had such high hopes for the Braves when I booked this trip. I can unequivically say this weekend was an abosulute nightmare.
ReplyDeleteRoger McDowell tossed my wife and I a ball while Hanson warmed up. After that, I am having a hard time figuring out anything else good that happened. She and I argued half of the time. The braves went 0 fer the weekend. Lines were long everywhere we went. The Metropolitian Muesum of
Art was a bore, but wifey wanted to go.
The braves are awful. I have been to 4 games this year and I believer they have committed 10-12 errors combined in those 4. They had 10 baserunners tonight and 0 runs. Chipper is too old to carry the team, Heyward is too young to to that kind of lifting. It was awful.
Oh and it was raining.
Short of the plane coliding with
a mountain tomorrow, I do not believe this trip could get worse.

The number of mental mistakes that the Braves are making the last few games is amazing.

Anticipating Auburn being in the SEC BB tourney, I just checked the Hoover schedule. It is exactly the same time we are in Colorado for our friend's graduation from the Air Force Academy! We get back on Saturday, so if Auburn is in the final game, we can go on Sunday.

ReplyDeleteBeen to 1 NASCAR race. I went to the Talladega ARCA (Sat?)race with My-Brother-the-Bammer a few years back. We each wore hats to support our favorite CFB teams. Near the end of the race some guy makes a comment that we were a "disfunkshinull famly", folks 30' feet around us in all directions got involved in the discussion and a Bama-AU fite almost broke out. Good thing because as you can imagine, the AU folks were heavily outnumbered at that event.
Errybody got back to watching the race just in time for the ubiquitous mega-wreck in the final laps. Ima one-and-done on the NASCAR thing.
The Braves can't score runs so they make up for it by committing errors both ghysical and mental.

ReplyDeleteOn according to Jim, Jim and his wife wrote letters to themselves on their wedding night with 15 year goals. On their 15th anniversary, they opened the letters. Jim's only goal was "do it in every state of the big 10 conference."

Hard to believe Snead didn't get drafted but Crompton did.
ReplyDeleteNot so much based on last year's play. Crompton seemed head and shoulders above. I started to refer to Snead as the new Crompton a few games into last season.
ReplyDeleteI'm not scout. But it seemed to me that Snead has potential if he can get back on the right path after a horrific 2009. but I see nothing in Crompton that would make me think he could be an NFL quarterback.

I will say, however, that I AM surprised Crompton went period, even though he has a pretty good arm.
