Tony Barbee speaks

Hey everyone. I spent some time this morning with Tony Barbee, Auburn's relatively new basketball coach, who had some very interesting things to say.

He isn't coy when it comes to answering difficult questions. He comes correct. I respect that about him. I didn't lob him many softballs today and Barbee answered the tough stuff.

For blog purposes, though, I have to hold back. I have a few summer stories planned and I'd hate to transmit all my goodies here. If I did that, you'd have little interest in the summer stories because it's would be old, tired information!

With that in mind, here are a few snippets:
  • You seem at ease getting out in the community and getting to know people. When did that develop?

I've always been that way -- outgoing, easy to connect with. My philosophy with how this works has been shaped by Coach (Calipari). Watching him do it when I was a player at UMass when he had to build a consensus of people. It wasn't ready-made. Same thing at Memphis. They had success there, but it had fallen away. He had to bring people in. That's just as important as recruiting players and winning games. You can't do that from behind a desk.

  • Auburn isn't exactly well known as a basketball school right now. Has it been a tough sell on the recruiting trail?

Auburn should be a place that should recruit itself. That's what sold me. When I looked at leaving a top-20 team like UTEP, a place I had great affection for, it was hard. When I looked at everything Auburn stood for … from the city to the education and now the new arena … and you've got a top-50 player in NBA history that's part of the program's tradition in Charles Barkley. There's so many things that say: This place should be able to sell itself.

When you're a basketball coach, recruiting is about selling. What do you have to offer? A lot of coaches get into negative recruiting what other people don't have to offer. I don't think you have to do that. What we have to sell stands up against any program in the country. It's all about confidence. I tell them: ``We're going to get it done; it would be easier with you." That's the approach we've taken.

We're starting with the state of Alabama. That's our priority. Too many players from this state have gone to schools outside this state. If you can give kids an option at home where they can reach all their goals and their dreams -- then they'll never go anywhere else. If something is missing on that list, maybe they would look somewhere else. I'm going to make that place here. I'll make it so they can stay home and get everything they want and need.

  • What do you tell these recruits, guys like Josh Langford and Luke Cothron, when you don't have recent tradition? Everyone has good academics. How do you convince them in lieu of NCAA Tournament berths?

I'm looking for trailblazers. I want guys who want to step outside their comfort level and blaze their own trail. I want them to help us turn this around -- and it will turn quickly -- and have people wonder how we did it so fast. Look at the cornerstone. Look at Josh and Luke and the other guys we signed this year. They're the ones who changed it and they're the ones people here will remember forever. That was my vision with these first signees. We're going to get it turned, but I've got to have guys who don't want to walk in their someone else's path. I want guys who blaze their own path.

  3. I really like Barbee. He is exactly what Auburn needed. I hope he gets it done in a big way.

  4. So JGT gives us some "teaser" substance. Can't wait to read the rest of the story!

  5. Will Jay Jacobs end up being the greatest AD at Auburn?

I personally gave the man hell. Apparently he has shown so far, and it is way early to judge this question, I understand, but he has shown he does know whats best for Auburn.

  6. Tony Barbee...me likey.

  8. Hello everyone. I've been away for a couple of days. I noticed that something I already suspected finally came to light. PF like ding dongs.

I am very pleased with Barbee and I wish people would stop suggesting he is/will/may violate NCAA rules. I know the rumors are in place because of his long time association with Calapari and his relationship with WWW, but the man has never been found guilty of anything. There were not any rumors about violations at UTEP (that I have heard) during his 4 yrs there. I have seen a few comments on here and a few other places. I think we should all just get completely on the bus and not even mentions those things.

Ding Dongs are awesome. If you don't like them, you're dumb...and the ignorance is bliss bus sounds great. Sign me up.

  13. I don't know if this was mentioned before but Barbee just signed a PG. Chris Denson is out of Columbus, GA. Now the question is who isn't going to qualify or who is going to leave the team.

Cartersville,Ga plays Columbus in a AAA playoff double header starting at 2pm EDT. Does anyone know the local Columbus station that is broadcasting the game?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Is it August yet?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Judging by the hot, sticky weather here, all signs point to yes. Jim Cantore is only slightly more reliable than a Magic 8 Ball, though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. To be a winner, you have to think like a winner, talk like a winner, and act like a winner. Barbee will be a winner.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Phil. I think you just got me officially excited about Tony Barbee.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That should be Phred. Don't know where Phil came from.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Opinions please. Here's the scenario: you may recall that in my life there exists a "beta-wife", with beta-wife, I have an 18 year old daughter. Beta and daughter live in P'ville, AL. Daughter has started seeing a boy and she's serious enough about him that she wants Hot Wife, F4* and I to meet him. That's all fine and good as far as things like that go. The conundrum is, this fellow just sent me a FB Friend Request. I've rejected a number of other requests (not from boyfriends of my daughter) from various people for various reasons. Do I reject or accept this most recent request?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Norm...
There is no 'reject', only 'ignore'. Much more palatable, yes?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Norm, you ignore it until you can pass judgment. Let it sit in the inbox and let him sweat it out.

    ReplyDelete
  36. A tip, if you add him, then you can keep tabs on him and his goings on, if you're into that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. hhhhmmmm, you may want to meet this fellow first. just to make sure he is 'friend-worthy'.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ignore ignore ignore, then reject. There is no reason you, the boyfriend, and beta daughter want to know that much about each other.

    ReplyDelete
  39. when is this supposed meeting Norm?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Take both pieces of Seanzie's advice.

Make him wait, then accept to keep an eye out on him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If the kid is stupid enough to ask you to keep an eye on him, do you really want him to date your daughter?

    ReplyDelete
  42. See, I knew I could count on you boys. You each confirm the way I was already leaning. As to when we'll meet, it won't happen before 5/28. That's when she graduates (as opposed to "gradulate") high school. We'd initially planned for Hot Wife and I to take daughter to dinner but that was before I'd even heard this dude existed. I think I'll ask her to invite him to join us.

    ReplyDelete
  43. mytommy - valid point, I hadn't thought of that angle.

I can confirm that he and his family are on the proper side of the state divide. They're even season ticket holders apparently.

    ReplyDelete
  44. +2 for the new guy.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sounds like you need to get his Dad to get with you on facebook. Agreed; season ticket holders make it a plus.

    ReplyDelete
  46. yup, cha-ching for the new guy.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Good interview, fot the iceburg tip
    enjoyed reading it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Norm, I would definitely hold off on accepting. Dealing with daughters and boyfriends involves a lot of listening and evil stares to make him squirm. It might be less effective if you are already on his friends list.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Norm, you could personally ignore it, and just pretend its not there for a while. That way they think you just forgot about it being there.

This strategy has successfully helped me avoid certain people.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I will hold off judgement on Barbee until he has actually accomplished something. There are plenty of peole that can talk a good game and I do wonder if he is raising the expectations too high too fast. I hope he can back up his talk.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Steve, really? You want him to make people question this hire and lower expectations? Just talk? He's gone out and signed 3 players in quick order...I think he's doing ok.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ehyou, Patak looks awesome. Thanks for the link. I will have to stop by there next time I'm in ATL.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm just happy Auburn basketball has expectations now. That's a step forward in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  54. whoa, whoa, whoa. There were expectations under Lebo until the final year, he just failed to meet them. Even the final year, there was some expectation after he turned out decent second half of 2008/2009. Those quickly evaporated when we realized it was the same old same.

Barbee still hasn't coached a game yet at AU, Seanzie, and those signeees haven't seen the court, so Steve's point has some validity. It looks good, but there is no banner being raised yet(or taken down 3 years later --for E-bro).

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't think anyone, at least has predicted an NCAA Tournament Champions banner being raised in Auburn Arena. I think it is ok to be excited about the future of the program. Signing three solid players is a step in the right direction and I think it's ok if the fans acknowledge it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. That should read: "..., at least here,..."

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sean...I've talked/joked about a prospective Final Four banner eventually being raised, then vacated a few years later due to violations, i.e., Calipari at UMass and Memphis.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Pete (can I call you Pete?)...Let me rephrase. Yes, maybe we've had expectations recently, but not coupled with the excitement that Barbee has generated.

So I think it's a different level of expectations. Even coming off the good year in 2008-2009, I'm not sure many Auburn fans expected much out of this year's team. I'm pretty sure the media didn't either, maybe picking them to finish fifth or sixth in the West.

If Lebo was still the coach, I'm not sure 30,000 would have shown up to check out the new arena on A-Day. Maybe that's excitement rather than raised expectations, but I think the two go hand in hand here, though they may be geared towards the future in general than this year specifically.

    ReplyDelete
  59. There is really no way to resolve this argument...so I suggest a duel.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Pistols at dawn.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i suggest a couple packs of ding-dongs and 2 sling shots.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Wieners and water balloon launchers

    ReplyDelete
  63. PF, the difference this time is we have a coach that is working hard to push his product.... not sponsoring and pushing his product....

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm excited about Coach Barbee. Lebo never peaked my interest about attending basketball game my entire time at AU. I went to a few, but I'm a lot more interested now (How great is that? I'm interested now and no longer have access to $2 student tickets). Obviously, I want to see what he can do on the court, but recruiting big names is a step in the right direction.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Dawn, flagpole, Peter, Ding-Dongs, wieners...E-Bro, if I were you, I'd sleep in.

By the way, I'm just assuming the flagpole part, based on PF's usual preference.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Anonymous3:49 PM

Norm ...don't do Facebook and you won't have the dilemma.

Ms. Hoopie made me look at our 22 yr. old daughter's Facebook page the other day to see a few pics. I made the mistake of glancing past the intended pics and ran into some pics that a Dad shouldn't see and shouldn't be placed in a public forum. We had words.

My daughter is 22, has a 3.8 in Nursing and gladulates next December. She is very pleasant and seems to do everything the right way (when around us), so on the whole I'm very proud. I just really didn't need to see those pics.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Proof's in the pudding of Mobilz's and MiniWEG's comments. The excitement Barbee has undoubtedly garnered has raised expectations for the future of the program comparied to recent years.

As for the duel (we're not arguing are we?), how do Super Soakers sound?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anonymous3:53 PM

Dueling Ding Dongs and Wieners at Dawn??

    That's illegal in some states.

    ReplyDelete
  69. And E-Bro, isn't that what it's all about? Raising expectation? How is our program going to gain any respect if we can't get people talking about it. We may have not had a NC in a while (except in Equestrian or Swimming&Diving), but at least we've got everyone talking.

    ReplyDelete
  70. MiniWEG,

    I like your thinking.

    War Eagle, all--just checking in.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Steve, really? You want him to make people question this hire and lower expectations?

Seanzie, read my post again. I never said that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. As for managing expectations, I think a good example has been Chizik. He makes no qualms about where he intends to take Auburn, but has done a pretty good job of tempering expectations so that he is given the time to do it.

Maybe a counter example would help. There was a coach at our sister school that talked about competing for a national championship just before he coached his team to a 3-8 seaon. His talk didn't help his team and likely hurt it by drawing the attention of the teams he would face.

    ReplyDelete
  73. E-bro,

No, we're not arguing. I think people just assume that about me sometimes. You know what that does, though, right? It makes them an donkey that hits ding dongs at me.

Super soakers are fine...I'm filling mine with orange juice, though, so you'll be all sticky. You can drink it, though, and at dawn it'd be like breakfast. Ding Dongs and weiners aren't so good for breakfast, so I suggest Cincy's french toast caserole.

    Someone bring beer.

    ReplyDelete
  74. If you're not pushing your product, you're gonna get pushed around.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I suggest we hold a HABOTN Battle Royale ... SuperSoaker battle to the death for the prize of all prizes ... A Poop Cooler.

Then when it's over, Ehyou can stop by Wienerville, pick us up some tasty sausages and grill 'em for us.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Last baseball game in Auburn this year starts in an hour. Go give your Tigers a rousing sendoff as they embark on a 8+ game roadtrip.

    ReplyDelete
  77. French toast casserole and beer ... breakfast of champeens

    ReplyDelete
  78. I say Barbee is going to win big ... and leave.

    I could be wrong.

    So it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I say he stays, and so does...

    ReplyDelete
  80. I co-manage a girl's U-8 team.

First-round playoff game tonight. We laid an egg in the regular-season finale after earning the No. 2 seed.

I'm hoping we have the funk behind us.

    Let's go EAGLES!

    ReplyDelete
  81. The pink Eagles, nach.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Good luck tonight, JGT!!! Go Eeagles!!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. looks like I just wasted a vowel.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Jay G, I concur in re Barbee.

    ReplyDelete
  85. THT - please be more careful with your vowel usage. There are thousands of children in places like Iceland and various 'stan countries who would dearly love just a single vowel.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Even winning and leaving would be better that what we've had since....ummmm....well....

    ReplyDelete
  87. AU will make the tourney by year two. I would hope to make it next year, but Au is going to be awful young. We will just have to see how quickly they grow up, I think they have as good a season as last yeas team.

    ReplyDelete
  88. From what I have read, we will have no seniors on next years team. With 4 starters graduating, being as good as last season is a reasonable goal, but I think we can actually be better. Once Barbee lets the players know they are able to move around on offense when they don't have the ball, a lot more options should appear offensively.

    ReplyDelete
  89. If Barbee does win big and leave... I'm fine with that. 1) It means we won BIG! 2) It would make it a more attractive job for the next guy to know we can win big here...

    ReplyDelete
  90. By the way...
Mummey starts off the game with another HR!
His bat has been so hot lately, I bet he has to wear oven mitts to pick it up.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Jay G, which sport does she play?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Speaking of bats; in the backyard playing with F4* this evening, I brought his T, bat and some balls. Just to check it out, I had him switch to the other side of the plate to hit. He did right well. Though, he couldn't throw very well lefty so I'm somewhat disappointed with that. I'm telling you, you'll be hearing/reading things about this kid in the future and it won't be whatever I have to say. Hear me now and believe me later.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Sure thing Earl Woods...I mean Norm :)!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Norm,

This is the kid that was sick today.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Ok HABOTNites... what's for dinner?
I am being indecisive... Do I want, Momma G's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chappy's??? You pick... anything on Vaughn or Taylor Rd area...

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'm with Miller on Barbee. If he wins big, great. If he leaves, it'll be a more palatable job for the next guy and maybe the fan interest in Auburn basketball will be here to stay.

JayG...in this scenario where he wins big, what is the timeline of his reign here and how long before we beat the fruit of his success (i.e., winning big)?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Miller ... Five Guys.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Also... what is your definition of winning big?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Look into my eyes and listen to me.

    NCAA Tournament -- Year One.
    NCAA Tournament -- Year Two.
    NCAA Tournament -- Year Three
    Coaching Search.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I think I would feel almost gluttonous going to 5 Guys by myself...

    ReplyDelete
  101. Just making the tourney, in my mind, isn't winning big...
Winning the tourney is winning big. back-to-back final 4 appearances is winning big. I want Banners dang it... and not the ones that say NIT or 1st round on them... I want words, and substance on my banners!

Give me banners or give me death!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Jet...Sweet Sixteen? Elite Eight? Final Four?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Momma G's is opening a third Auburn location....where's the second one???

    ReplyDelete
  104. Probation in year four?

    ReplyDelete
  105. PF - yes, I'm referring to the same kid. If I didn't know better, I'd say he was an alien or something.

    ReplyDelete
  106. A fourth, PF, just opened.

    1) The Orig.
    2) Thach Ave. across from Armstrong St.
    3) Glenn Ave. just before Tiger Town
    4) Longleaf Rd. (side across from Wal-Mart) just past the bank.

These, are the Mamma G's. In chronological order.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Miller ...

Considering how few times we've made the tournament (5 under Sonny, 3 under Ellis), I'd say making the tournament three years in a row would be winning big.

Having a coach hired away by a "bigger program" would be big.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Sure, we all want Final Fours ... but those require a measure of luck.

Sweet 16s are the benchmark in my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Should Barbee win big, it may be that Auburn would pay the bucks to keep him around. Changing coaches is always a crap shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Thanks Wells. I guess I don't do enough venturing when I'm in town nowadays...and Facebook apparently is not for countes. They said 4 was the third.

    ReplyDelete
  111. No prob. They might not count that one down Dean as inside Auburn. Its pretty close to Opelika territory, perhaps in the DMZ.

Here's to Barbee earning $53 Million a year for contract year 2053.

    ReplyDelete
  112. We will also have 18 Championship banners hanging in Auburn Arena, as it is the final season of both it and Coach Barbee's careers. Barbee-Chizik Memorial Coliseum to open in the fall of 2054.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I know it may be unrealistic... but, I have lofty goals.
    I'm a dreamer.

    ReplyDelete
  114. You're not the only one.

Time to head back to Europe.

    ReplyDelete
  119. AU was up 4-0 after 2 innings and they changed pitchers. brought in a kid that has thrown just 4 innings. There is a reason for that. He gives up 3 hits, 2 walks, 3 wild pitches, 4 runs.
Bottom 5 now. Au up 6-4.
    Gamache now hitting over .400.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Pink Eagles win, 4-0.

On to the semifinals against the hated hot pink team. Ugh.
