So what did we miss?
- Auburn's baseball team continued its march toward Hoover (for the first time in six years) with a series win at Arkansas. The Tigers hit eight homers during the weekend and starter Grant Dayton was filthy on Sunday. He struck out 10 batters and allowed two runs in seven innings.
The team now is 30-15 overall and 12-9 in SEC play.
The team plays last-place Mississippi State and a disappointing Tennessee team at Plainsman Park during the next two weekends. Series wins there all but lock up a postseason bid. - Not directly Auburn-related, but the NCAA rules committee will meet in Indianapolis today. Among the items they'll review: Installing a charge/block arc near the basket (a la the NBA) that prevents players from camping under the basket in an effort to draw charges.
- The Tiger Trek caravan rolls into Montgomery tonight. It's run through the Montgomery Auburn Club and replaces the big summer b-b-q event we used to attend in July or August. Gene Chizik will be there. Two people emailed to say Tony Barbee would be there as well, but a check with basketball publicist Chuck Gallina revealed that Barbee is in Texas today.

It's only about 1/2 mile from the stadium, and less than a block off of Stadium Trace (the main road in). I promise that all the food will be free of crude oil.

ReplyDeleteWhere do you plan on getting the crawfish and shrimp? Surely you won't be using frozen ones from Asia, but I don't foresee any domestic ones being available at that time. Has any considered this and started freaking out yet?
Domestic (South Carolina) should be ready and available for your shrimp boilin' needs. And we need your dollars. I can't help with Crawfish.
ReplyDeletePF, I'm sure someone is already freaking out, but I know those in charge will do the right thing. As I mentioned previously, I'm confident that the food will be crude oil free. This is the 13th year for the event, so there is plenty of experience in dealing with challenges (admittedly, this year will probably be the most challenging of all).

ReplyDeleteA lot of the crawfish will still be fairly good. They live inland for the most part, all freshwater. As long as the oil stays away from getting into the rivers, LA crawfish are safe.

ReplyDeleteSome of my high school buddies came up one to to play golf. Losers had to buy dinner. So we went to sames a bought a slap of meet (fillet mignon) for $70. We made 13 nice sized steaks. One of the best cook outs ever.
The steaks came from Sam's. You can't beat 13 filet mignons for $70.

My steak will continue cooking on it's own, and does not need a sizzling plate that will cause the outside to maintain such temperatures that will burn my tongue. The meat is decent, though. Not decent enough to justify me spending that kind of money for an unoriginal chain restaurant, but decent nonetheless.

ReplyDeleteNo way we should be lower than Ark. I can maybe see LSU because they have tons of talent. I think our rankings is pretty fair though. Not bad considering where we were just two years ago. If some of these freshmen come in and play well and Cam does his thing then we will have a chance at the west.
ReplyDeleteNot quite, PF. Bama and UF definitely deserve the top two spots. 3rd, 4th, and 5th should be Ole Nutt, us, and USCe in no particular order. I would have UGA at 6th, although I can see them do better.

ReplyDeleteI have Richt in the top spot. I think Miles still has a couple of years to work things out at LSU. They are still in a pretty good position right now with the talent he has gathered.
Most likely to not be with the team after this year? I would vote Spurrier. How many more disappointing seasons can the guy take?
I'll go with Miles and Richt has co-favorites for hottest seat, though I think Miles is more likely to get fired while Richt may be more likely to just step down at the end of this season.

ReplyDeleteI have been asked several times if the oil spill in the gulf will affect availability of crawfish and shrimp. The answer is NO. Crawfish are raised in freshwater farms, inland from the coast.
Actually this year I most likely will be buying the crawfish from a farm in west Alabama. Shrimp are farm raised also and there is a big import market on shrimp so I don't foresee a problem there either.
So continue to tell everyone to come out and enjoy some crude oil free seafood!

ReplyDeleteusc under spurrier has just puzzled me. i would like for AU to emphatically state to mr. lattimore he chose incorrectly by stomping usce's head in the ground this year. AU has only played spurrier at usce twice, right? 2005 beatdown and 2006 thriller where AU had the ball for the entire Q3.
I agree mytommyd. I can't see ARK finishing ahead of us this year. The Iron Bowl has a chance to decide who represents the west this year. That is as long a injuries don't get us and we don't lose to someone we shouldn't (KU or MSU). That MSU game on a Thursday could be a tough one.

ReplyDeleteMSU concerns me because, while topping the list as the SEC coach most likely to play the John Goodman roll in a remake of the Babe, Mullen is a dang good offensive mind. MSU is the team I worry about early this season.
South Carolina has a very good defense. If Spurrier gets the offense rolling, they could end up second in the east.
i can't see arky finishing ahead of AU this year, but i can see them beating AU this year because they score 50 or something.
ReplyDeleteAU just brings out the best in whoever we play. we got uga's only game without multiple turnovers (they had 0) and no penalties. arky probably played its best game of the year against AU. mallet looked like a god against us and couldn't throw it out of bounds against other teams.
Yeah chip, I don't know what this thing is that we have about playing Arkansas. It seems they wait until it's too late to get motivated to play and beat up a team that they should be able to handle. Maybe there's something in that Fayetteville water that slows the boys down.
ReplyDeleteI tend to think we usually don't match up well with Arkansas. They have traditionally been a power running team and our defense has been more of a small and fast team that deals better with the more pass happy offenses or people that run the ball outside.

Last season we just hit that middle stretch of schedule very beat up.
ReplyDeleteMSU is a team that has traditionally been a thorn in our side too, although they don't usually win. They usually always give us a closer game than anticipated. I attribute that mainly due to MSU's solid defenses and they typically have pretty good linemen.
the worst losses to arky have been at AU. we tend to beat them or put up a better fight over there.
ReplyDeleteNot to diminish our superior view of Arkansas, but while they are something of a bogey team, they've also more or less been at a similar trajectory to our program. Obviously, our 2004 season and overall SEC history trumps much of what they have stood for, but since 1992, they've been to Atlanta, what, three times (1995, 2002, and 2006) that I can think of.
ReplyDeleteHow many times have we been to ATL? Three times. Yeah, I think we opearte on a slightly higher plane that do the Hogs, but it's not like it's so high we can't see them. And besides that, as much as they've given us problems, we've done the same to them. Last year was the first time we had lost in Fayettenam since 2001.
the only time i can remember AU housing arky was 2004. it was sweet that year having so many games decided at halftime.

ReplyDeleteWe're excited, and we have a right to be. But we won three league games last year, and we're breaking in a new QB. Arkansas returns potentially the No. 1 QB in next year's NFL draft.
Teams with solid line play and solid QB play win in this league.
I think Cam can turn a question mark into an exclamation point, but that doesn't mean we deserved to be ranked ahead of Ark and LSU in the preseason.

ReplyDelete1) Do I expect coverage of summer practices, complete with topless photos? Yes, absolutely! But, not of the football team, I want topless summer practice photos of the cheerleaders and Tigerpaws.
2) One of the largest industries in the state of Alabama is aquaculture. There is a huge market for farm-raised crawfish, shrimp, catfish, tilapia, and other fish. That's the only good thing about the western half of the state.

ReplyDeleteStill believe Mallett is going to be one to the top QBs drafted? Well, Snead was suppose to be one of the top two QBs drafted, along with Sam Bradford. It just didn't turn out that way. Hows the dumb side sound as the title of a movie? It can chronicle the success of prognosticators.
ReplyDeleteIf wouldn't blame the Snead thing on prognosticators If Snead had made any progress at all from the 2008 season, he would have been a first round pick. All the draft gurus said as much, and they were right. Instead, Snead took an enormous step backward. No one had Snead going high after the season.

Steve- Snead isn't even in the same class as Mallett. Mallett will be a high draft pick next year. I was always leary of Snead. Mallett scares me. He has all the tools and the head is on a lot tighter than Snead.

ReplyDeleteFootball players are like a box of chocolates. It is hard to tell which ones are fruits or nuts at the core.
There are many other examples, such as Kodi and Rollison. And then there are those that surprise like Mr. Bates. Yes, his nickname has been updated for general audiences.
ReplyDeleteAnother good comparison is Ray Cotton and Tyrik Rollison. Some thought Rollison would be much better. Both have potential. Neither has actually done anything yet. Who is the best? So far we just don't know. Rankings are only a rough indicator and they can change drastically, like they did with Snead.

ReplyDeleteI've always "heard," but don't know, that T-Mobile and AT&T have a sharing agreement on towers, and that they are the same. Translated, not that great.
Verizon and Alltel seem to have better coverage in Alabama, in my opinion.
I have an AT&T for work, and my fam has Verizon.
If I recall correctly, Verizon purchased Alltel last year which would explain the sharing agreement. Our personal cells are Verizon and my work is Sprint. I'm not pleased with Sprint at all. I've had very little issues with Verizon. The only exception there is whenever we go to Seagrove, FL (which may not be for awhile now), we have absolutely zero coverage on either cell. It's constantly searching for a tower so that drains the battery completely.
