Hey everyone. News is breaking this afternoon about Auburn's decade-long quest for a proper indoor practice facility.Short summary: It's happening.
The Board of Trustees on Friday approved plans to build a 100-yard, enclosed facility on the current practice grounds. Athletic director Jay Jacobs said the department needs to raise $16 million privately to cover construction costs.
He's hoping the facility, which also can provide training space for other sports, will be completed before the 2011 season begins.
``This is a huge step forward for our football facilities," coach Gene Chizik said.

ReplyDeleteTwice in my life I have woken up and not been able to get out of bed. I am talking about it hurting to get out of bed. I am saying that if the house was on fire I wouldn't have been able to get up.
Until you have dealt with sever back issues, it is very hard to understand.

ReplyDeleteHomer - I herniated discs in my neck about 10 years ago. Actually, on 7/2 will be 10 years ago when symptoms got bad enough to realize it was something fishy. I did what I was supposed to do for about 6 months before they finally ruptured. Long story short, I have titanium in my neck and false discs replacing C4 & C5. Do whatever they tell you to do. The pain of a rupture is unlike anything you can imagine. Coincidentally, I remember an interview on WSFA with a woman who also had ruptured those same discs and she said it was a pain way worse than childbirth.

ReplyDeleteOne of the interesting things about growing older is it is a learning process. You are always learning things you can't do no more, usually by trying to do them.
ReplyDeleteI had minor back issues that were helped enormously by getting a sleep number bed. It seems I was sleeping on much too hard a mattress and it was pushing my spine out of line.
ReplyDeleteStrengthening it helped as well.
40lbs ago, I could dunk. Now I can barely touch the bottom of the net. (With arms stretched out, I think that requires my feet to be almost 8 full inches off the ground)

My 33 year old son Daniel screwed his back up when he was in the minor leagues about ten years ago. About a year and a half ago he had a terrible bout and a MRI showed a L5 bulging herniated disc. I swear I think a sneeze finally did him in. He put off surgery until he had no choice. Anyway he has lived in some serious pain since then.
In March of this year he went to Pittsburgh to the Jho Institute at Allegheny General Hospital. Dr. Jho does a minimally invasive procedure with teeny tiny tools and Daniel's incision is about 1-1 1/2 inches wide.
He flew up on a Tuesday afternoon, met with Dr. Jho on Wednesday for pre-op, had surgery on Thursday and spent the night in the hospital, released on Friday at 8:00am, went back to the hotel for Friday night and flew home on Saturday night.
He is virtually pain free. He is a primary school physical education teacher so he just took it very slow for about 4 weeks.
He had to go to his primary physician after a week or two to let him check incision. Dr Jho glues his incisions. The only other thing he had to do is get a MRI and have it sent to Dr. Jho.
Truly amazing how minor this major surgery seemed

ReplyDeleteI'm going to echo some of the things missinit just said. My brother-in-law had a ruptured disc and tried to avoid surgery. Finally 4 weeks ago he had the same type surgery, 3/4 inch incision, immediate pain relief. He is back at work and doing great. Turned out a part of the disc that had ruptured was pressing against a nerve. When they removed it, viola! no more pain.

Also: It's great to hear some success stories. The interwebs are full of people who had surgery and turned into toads. Or the Keebler elf. Or something equally bad.
ReplyDeleteThat's why my bil was so opposed to surgery, he had heard all the horror stories. Then this doctor recommended this minimally invasive surgery. He could tell an immediate difference when he woke up in the recovery room. I'd get advice from several different doctors.
ReplyDeleteJayG-Just to let you knw I had back surgery about 24 years ago. I ruptured during a powerlifting meet. Was squatting something @ 625lbs and got a little twisted. cracked two ribs and ruptured a disc. Got a referral from a UAt grad (Preston Gothard) to see Larry Lemak in B'ham. Had surgery and no problems since. Never went back to competing in weightlifting meets agian, but did get my squats back up over 500lbs. so if you need help increasing your squat, call me. I will say it can bother me every once in a while if I do something dumb, but it only hurts for a day or so and then all is fine.

ReplyDeleteJay, Fellow back sufferer here. Just curious if the doc suggested ab work when the pain calms down?
ReplyDeleteI started doing p90x torture sessions and as I got stronger, there was some pain relief. (Supposedly stronger abs help help protect the back muscles).
Of course you'll have other injuries that pop up (mainly to your pride) from it, but the point is, your other muscles will hurt so much, it mutes the back pain.
Thankfully Damon Duval isn't on the team anymore, the top of the indoor practice field doesn't seem high enough for his fake punt passes.

Every obscenity I knew at the time immediately rushed forth trying to get to the front of the line for boisterous utterance. I lost consciousness shortly thereafter. I think he redeemed himself later in his career though, thankfully.

ReplyDeleteThis new practice facility is a huge step for Auburn and it's pursuit of being a true big dog.
On another note my neighbors had a party today and they had a huge slip and slide. I forgot how much fun that was. Once all the adults got involved things got dangerous. We ended up making a ramp and jumping from one yard to the other into an inflatable pool. I will feel it tomorrow.

If you traced my disdain for UAT to one source (of course, I watered and fertilized it into full grown hate), it would lead to Dad.
From the 1969 game vs. the Infidels (the first game he took me to) to the 2007 game vs. Florida (the last one we watched together on TV), whether in the stadium, huddled by a radio or in front of a TV, we shared scores of Auburn memories.
He believed in Auburn and loved it.

That's what the US Open is ... a brutal obstacle course ... a high risk/very little reward event.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it, but it's not near as enjoyable as the Masters where birdies and eagles are available as are bogeys and double bogeys.
Par 3s with dried greens stretched to more than 220 aren't reasonable. If only 10 percent of the players hit the green, that's just punishment.
The winner finished at even par ... a dream scenario for the USGA ... McDowell seems like a cool guy, so I'm OK with it. But Pebble Beach is too beautiful to trick up into a horror house.
Jet ...Pebble Beach and Spyglass aren't outrageously tough if on a normal setup and the wind is calm. Of course looking at the scenery too much will make definitely raise the score. I played Pebble Beach first and got lost in the scenery. Did much better on Spyglass. This was in September and the wind was calm. If you hit into the Iceplant ..take a drop. It is impossible to hit out of.

ReplyDeleteDo the greens there normally look like that? i guess I'm just accustomed to the plush greens you see week to week on the tour, but those greens were discolored and looked patchy to me. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact they cut them so low to make them fast.
ReplyDeleteThe greens are poa anna [a weed in the east] and bent grass. Thus the different shades of color. I am told they much better in person and that tv makes them look bad.

Baldy - I would be too distracted by the poverty state I'd find myself in after paying the green fees. They are close to 500/round at Pebble Beach, though I'm sure there are deals available where it would be "only" about $300.

$500??! I'll take the $40-50 green fees at Marietta City Club. Yeah, it ain't paradise, but heck, I won't have to mortgage the house for a game of golf. Plus, the kids would even be able to eat, which would make them happy too.

ReplyDeleteI played there way back in 1989 and it was around $150 to play Spyglass and $250 to play PB. The Japanese owned the place at the time.
ReplyDeleteThe greens nearer the water are almost entirely Poa Anna. The folks out there said that the salt prohibited much else from growing. The discoloration is deceiving. The greens are fast and almost feel slimy to the touch. It is solid grass with weird colorations.
Down at Torrey Pines (another seaside course near San Diego), the greens are bent. I guess the wind doesn't blow salt spray as much there.
The U.S. Open sucked, no one played well on sunday, no good story lines, just boring to watch.

I talked to my dad about it, he played SpyGlass and walked around PB for a while (wanted to save the $300 greens fee) back in '03.
ReplyDeleteHe said the grass is great in the salty air and that it grows so fast, that the course rating changes from a 14 in the morning tee times to barely a 12 by the 3:00 pm starters.

I concur about the relative ease of the "normal" setup of Pebble Beach. Those I know who have played the course have played well.
ReplyDeleteAs a frame of reference for setup ... McDowell wins the Open at even for 72 holes. Dustin Johnson won the AT&T Pebble Beach at 16-under.
Of the 69 players who finished the tournament, 63 broke par. Only two finished over par.
Watching a 16 under is OK I guess.

JG ...Surgery should be the last option. Look into a combination of deep tissue massages (from a registered NMT), core strength training, yoga, inversion tables and chiropractic. Some combination of those will work for most anyone as long as your discs aren't too far gone.

For a hole in the wall little Italian place with decent Italian and really good pizza (the best in town in my opinion), consider Mom's Italian Villa.

Looking for more good Italian? Try Tony's. It's located along the Bluff View Art District as are some other good dining options.
Looking for the best BBQ in town? Well, that would be my Dad's, but I'm not sure we're open for business yet.
By the way, for all you heat sufferers, I was in snow 3 times last week. Of course, that makes it feel that much hotter now that I'm back.

212 Market Street is another good place to eat in the Noog.

Since it's slow, and since my part of this concall doesn't come up for a few minutes, I'll tell you a story. Some neighbors have a 5 y/o boy and they gave us his old bike last Thursday. Their future dancer is a bit on the small side and my 3 y/o F4* is on the large side so it looked like it would be a sweet deal. It's probably the smallest bike (not used by clowns) made and the seat's not adjustable so I figured F4* couldn't use it for too long but he'd have some fun with it. And fun he did have. I've been parking the family truckster outside of the garage so we can play different stuff but that's another story. Hot Wife parked outside the garage over the weekend too doubling our play area and F4* had been enjoying his new bike in the garage.

Entering the garage from the house this morning I notice that Hot Wife parked inside the garage last night when she came home and I noticed the bike laying on the garage floor beside her car. I said to myself, I said "self, that looks like a near miss." Upon further inspection, there was no near miss. She nailed it rendering it no longer able to be ridden. Sure, I could replace the training wheels and the rear wheel and the seat but once I do all that and spend the time being aggravated while doing it, I could just as easily and more quickly replace it with a new one from Wally World.
As soon as I get to the office, I email her with a few generic items since they're still asleep when I leave the house. My last generic item emailed was to inform her of her mishap. It's puzzled me ever since how she was able to do this supposedly without knowing it since she didn't mention it last night and since judging by the looks of my garage floor, I'd guess she drug the bike across the floor about a foot. Strangely, she's avoided my calls today.
So, it looks like we'll be making a family trip to Wally World this evening. Women...can't live with 'em, can't trust 'em with cars or bikes. Hot Wife, yeah I guess I'll still keep her around. But you'd better believe she'll be hearing about this one for some time to come.
