I'm just saying they're subjective.

Too often we take subjective information, put a number on it and think it's objective. I'm not sure what standard deviation and dispersion (variance) of the star ranking system would really mean. Comparing subjective recruit rankings to subjective NFL draft choices only exacerbates the problem. (Most high round picks are great, but some are busts.)

I'm sure, however, that when I break the code my answer will be 97.34% accurate. :-)astatguyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01139243267367744281noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23235343.post-12397645225869136322009-01-20T11:21:00.001-06:002009-01-20T11:21:00.001-06:00I'm sure USC's recruits were good despite their ir...I'm sure USC's recruits were good despite their irrelevant high stars ;-)Tar Heel Tigerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01167435325748590035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23235343.post-72704803489968275912009-01-20T11:21:00.000-06:002009-01-20T11:21:00.000-06:00Yeah, that's what I thought!Yeah, that's what I thought!michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08211866181943348106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23235343.post-67101193762005112002009-01-20T11:11:00.000-06:002009-01-20T11:11:00.000-06:00As a statistician, you understand variability. Like all rankings, they are done by people, so certainly are full of errors. I read an article on NFL draft picks, and the star ranking system was actually pretty good at predicting where they would go in the draft, but of course there are exceptions.

I do think Auburn fans take the easy way out and say stars don't matter, look at player x. Am I really supposed to buy that the Auburn coaches the past few years would not have wanted Pete Carroll's recruiting classes?michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08211866181943348106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23235343.post-57695255193916289512009-01-20T10:45:00.000-06:002009-01-20T10:45:00.000-06:00Stat- that's too funnyStat- that's too funnyTar Heel Tigerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01167435325748590035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23235343.post-51562273851217074182009-01-20T10:43:00.000-06:002009-01-20T10:43:00.000-06:00I'm a statistician, and I've tried to figure out a...I'm a statistician, and I've tried to figure out a way to quantitatively measure how good recruiting rankings are based on real results. I don't think it's a solvable problem though, because the rankings are subjective. I agree, however, that the rankings are actually pretty good.

Some measures that count are size, intelligence, toughness, character, and meanness. Now how do you put a number around that? We didn't know what we had. I'm watching a very poised and calm Brandon Cox shred the Gator secondary and change plays at the line to get us in a good one. I'm listening to announcers talk about how under-appreciated he is, and I realize now how right they were. They simply look at how many schools are recruiting a kid and who they are - and they change the rankings. How can a kid sitting on his couch go from *** to **? And then people get on the recruiting site's message board and complain about the number of stars changing because it affects their teams ranking (like there's some prize to be won).
