AU-Ole Miss, 2-3

Hey everyone. I'm here at the game, and will be blogging at the timeouts.

*15:38, 1st (UM, 9-3): Auburn not flowing on offense. Already have three turnovers in nine possessions. Ole Miss center Dwayne Curtis just drew his second foul, though, which is a good sign for the Tigers. Curtis is Ole Miss' best (read: only) inside presence.

I think Auburn is going to surge during the next five minutes. Let's see if I'm right.

*11:59, 1st (UM, 19-8): OK, so the Tigers weren't ready to surge. They gave up three-point baskets on back-to-back possessions around the 13:00 mark. Ole Miss G Bam Doyne drove to the basket, then passed out to G Clarence Sanders. He hit both shots. Auburn's defense seems to thirsty for a block. They're not following assignments properly.

*7:48, 1st (UM, 28-15): Oh, boy. Since the last break, Ole Miss has hit a trio of three-point shots. Two were from Sanders. Isn't it time to put some thought into guarding him? Dude already has 12 points. Auburn's offense is a mess. No flow at all. Team looks totally lost ... though I don't think Ole Miss is all that good. The Rebels are super hot right now.

*3:32, 1st (UM, 38-26): Auburn's offense has regained its head. The plays are making sense. The problem for the Tigers is that Ole Miss keeps shooting well. The Rebels are 7 of 11 from three-point range right now, and are 15 of 23 overall. That's helping them overcome some significant turnover problems.

*Halftime (UM, 43-31): Stat that jumps out at me -- points off turnovers. Ole Miss is ahead there 22-3. Ole Miss is 8 of 13 from three-point range at thi point. Auburn's offense made sense during the final six minutes or so. I think the Tigers still can come back from this. To be down only 12 points after what has happened ... I'd say that's reason for Auburn optimism.

*19:01, 2nd (UM, 43-36): Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy called a timeout because his team is a mess. Auburn's first possession of the second half ended with a turnover, but a lay-up by Rasheem Barrett and a three-pointer from Josh Dollard has cut into the Ole Miss lead.

*15:43, 2nd (UM, 50-42): Auburn actually had the lead down to four points. Then Sanders hit another three-point shot. Duh. Dude has the ugliest shot this side of Clyde Drexler, but he's killing Auburn right now. I still think the Tigers will win this game, mainly because Ole Miss is playing so far over its head and still is only up eight points.

*10:55, 2nd (UM, 58-44): Now Auburn has devised a new way to hurt itself: Dumb turnovers. PG Tez Robertson had two uncontested turnovers -- seeing one was a shock because he's so steady -- and Barrett added a lovely lost dribble on a drive. I've changed my tune. Auburn won't win. There isn't any consistency. Too much spazzing out.

*6:49, 2nd (UM, 69-56): Auburn is really lost on defense. The offense is OK, they've scored on six of their seven possessions since my last update, but Ole Miss is doing the same thing. Barrett has been terrible today. Now that Auburn is down by a lot of points, he's suddenly awesome. If this game gets close again, book it, Barrett will start struggling again. I'm starting to figure him out.

*3:48, 2nd (UM, 71-59): Usual delights now. Auburn taking bad shots and not hitting them. Ole Miss is not playing very well right now, but the Tigers aren't taking advantage of that. It's funny to me that some people believe this is an NCAA tournament team. If you're going to play in the NCAAs, you have to be able to play harder when conditions merit. Auburn can't do that. Not today, anyway, and this is/was a pretty important game.

*Final (UM, 82-59): Yucky. There is no need for Ole Miss, a decent team but nothing special, to beat Auburn by 23 points in Beard-Eaves. It's just unreal.

Some stats:
SHOOTING: Auburn 38.9%, Ole Miss 52.4%.
3PT SHOOTING: Auburn 31.6%, Ole Miss 54.5%
REBOUNDS: Tied at 34.
TURNOVERS: Auburn 25, Ole Miss 17
POINTS OFF TURNOVERS: Auburn 10, Ole Miss 31

That's a wrap, both for me and for Auburn's chances to make the NCAAs. This team just doesn't have it.

Don't worry JayG, AU will be back in the NCAA tournament as soon as the field is expanded to 1024 teams.
