News of the day, 9/10
Hey everyone. Auburn is off today, but that doesn't mean you won't be getting fresh information here. Tommy Tuberville will be in Montgomery speaking to the quarterback club this afternoon. I was there. Not much new to report, though I will do so down below.
Thanks for accepting another satisfying pull off the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.
Tuberville reiterated his faith in Brandon Cox today. He said Cox's problems are a result of particularly bad things happening when he makes a bad decision. So the inference is that Cox isn't making more mistakes than before ... it's just that each one is more detrimental. It's an interesting approach.
Tuberville spoke on Sunday (and again today in front of TV cameras) of possibly taking the redshirt off some players. He's speaking specifically about LB Joshua Bynes and CB Ryan Williams. I pressed him on this issue after the cameras left, and he presented this more as an emergency measure. If Tray Blackmon (ankle) can't play against Mississippi State, that leaves Chris Evans as the only available MLB. Bynes is the No. 3 MLB. Auburn will practice Bynes more rigorously to prepare for that unlikely scenario. The hope is to preserve Bynes' redshirt. Same for Williams, who is playing behind Jae Wilhite (hamstring) at CB.
I made a point yesterday that several emailers didn't seem to understand. Losing to South Florida does not put Auburn in exclusive company. That's a top-25 team with some real players. That team will cause problems for Louisville, Rutgers and West Virginia this season. I can't believe that I'm telling rabid Auburn fans to ease up because I generally enjoy misguided anger, but it's a little out of hand. I don't think Auburn is in free fall. They just need to play another quarterback. If Cox had zero turnovers during the first two games instead of FIVE, the team would be 2-0. Cox is the main problem right now. I'm not sure there are other major problems in progress right now. Well, I won't argue against people who say the play-calling isn't good.
Here is my AP football poll for this week. I added Georgia Tech and Arkansas this week. I dropped Auburn and Michigan. I really like the top six teams. There's a pretty wide chasm after that. Penn State and Florida are wild cards. I can't tell with them just yet.
Note that I bumped LSU ahead of Southern Cal. LSU has accomplished more to this point.
'
Also note that I dropped Hawaii from 8 to 15. I had them too high. Struggles at La. Tech cast major doubt in Hawaii's legitimacy, and I dropped the Warriors accordingly.
The AP publishes my ballot and those of other voters each week. They haven't updated the list since last week. I'm sure they will soon.

Am I the only one that thinks we don't have a great running game right now due to Cox's lack of ability to throw the ball downfield? If we had a quarterback that was a legitimate deep threat, maybe every team wouldn't put 8 or 9 men in the box against us. The offensive line isn't the problem. In my opinion, all the offensive problems are due to Cox. How little of the offense does Kodi Burns know? I don't understand why people are saying it could ruin his career if he starts now, and gets eaten up by the SEC defenses. What is that supposed mean? It's still just football, and clearly Burns is athletic enough to be a great quarterback. It's a mystery to me why he isn't being given a shot, unless he just absolutely doesn't know any of the playbook. War Eagle
I think Cox is the primary issue as well. I don't think it's useful to play Kodi Burns right now. He's been playing college ball for two months now -- some of it on the scout team -- and he's not in a situation where he can help the team very much.
It's not a confidence issue in my mind. It's a Kodi-isn't-good-right-now issue.
Arguing for the use of Blake Field makes more sense. He's been here three years.
One thing is for sure, if he struugles again and the MSU game is real close, how do you leave him in and not give Field a chance. At this point it's hard to imagine Field being any worse!!
I agree. If Cox plays poorly against MSU, Auburn needs to insert Blake Field and see what he can accomplish.
One of my favorite fellow beat guys, Phillip Marshall, wrote today that it's wrong to say mean stuff about Cox. I disagree. He's 23, almost 24. And it's not like people are throwing eggs at his car. Fans are voicing their displeasure and I think that's fine. If Cox is eligible for adulation after great performances (he's certainly received plenty of that during his career) then he must also be eligible for criticism.
I don't think Brandon really cares one way or the other. The outside criticism doesn't seem to affect him very much.
Got a question for you. How has Cox practiced latley? Is he sharp there?
The press isn't allowed to watch practice.
I disagree on Burns. If the coaches believe he is the guy next year he needs to play. Not every series, but at least as a change of pace.
I don't buy the "wasted redshirt" argument either, if he starts for 3 years then you got your scholarship's worth plus some. If he plays at least sparingly (a la Tebow) and is even somewhat impressive this could easily be a pre-season Top 10 team next year.
VaTech has an eerily similar situation right now. Their Freshman was named starter today. I thought that was interesting. I would give Cox one more week, if its more of the same then a rotation has to begin.
One thing on Tebow is that he enrolled in January before his first season. Burns arrived in mid June. Big difference.
I don't think it's time for Auburn to start playing for next season. It's one loss to a pretty good team. If AU loses to Mississippi State, well, then everything changes.
I really don't think Kodi Burns can run this offense right now.
But really, the question is, how can Greg Knox help out the situation?
Knox describing Slaughter, three weeks ago: "He's LAWST. LAWST."
There is no coach that has done a poorer job of developing talent on the Auburn roster than Greg Knox. It's frustrating to watch freshmen at other schools contribute at WR but hear our coaches say year after year that they either a)don't block well enough or b)don't know the plays.
I don't have an easy way to defend Greg Knox on that count. Aside from Courtney Taylor, the Tuberville Tigers haven't produced a really good wideout.
Some will argue that Devin and Ben and Mix were really good. None of them reached their max potential, though I'm not sure it's Knox's fault. I don't get the sense that wideout is a recruiting emphasis.
Auburn puts a lot of emphasis on linemen. I've seen a lot of those guys excel since 1999.
I'll defend Knox. He's good in a social setting. Jay knows that.
He's happy. Jovial?
Jay -After Kansas State, Cox said he was dizzy, fuzzy-thinking, etc. I thought at the USF game that he lacked alot of his usually good judgement. I'm wondering if he had a concussion he's not telling anyone about & trying to be the "tough guy" & play through it. What do you think?
Cox said he was fine during the fourth quarter of the KSU game -- that his mental clarity had returned.
I don't think a concussion is part of the equation. I really don't know what's going on.
Jay,
I heard on the radio that Auburn's 2nd string QB has been demoted and a certain true Freshman got the majority of first team snaps at practice Sunday. Any truth to that? Please say yes.
I'll address this on the Sept. 11 blog.

Alot of people were worried about this game before it was played.
Auburn was ranked 17th in one poll.
The worries were obviously justified.
Auburn lost. So for that they drop more than 8 spots?
Yeah, if they had lost like Michigan did to Oregon, I could see Auburn dropping out.
BTW, I totally agree with you about LSU, but I'm biased to the SEC.
