News of the day, 10/21

Hey everyone. That was a fun 6-hour drive back to Auburn. Nothing like that scintillating stretch of road from Ft. Deposit to Satsuma. Wonderful.

We (Josh Moon and I) had a pretty good time at LSU on Saturday. We arrived several hours before the game and bascially loitered around the area between Tiger Stadium and the Maravich Assembly Center. We were waiting to see angry confrontations between Auburn and LSU fans, which we then would chronicle in the Advertiser. Yet we saw nothing objectionable at all. There was a styrofoam cooler with "Auburn sucks" written on the side. I didn't think that was worth a story.

Pretty standard pre-game atmosphere. I saw two poodles with their hair sheared to read "Tigers," which was unexpected.

I also saw way more of Bobby Hebert, former (Northwestern State) and NFL quarterback, than I ever care to see again. He was sitting in the press box one level below me, demanding that LSU "hurt Brandon Cox" and having an absolute fit after the Dorsey chop block. You'd think Ziemba and Ramsey had cut blocked Hebert. The experience ruined my feelings for Hebert. I liked him when he played in the league.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to peep the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.

Tuberville, as you'd expect, was not happy with the phantom flag thrown during Jacob Hester's screen touchdown there in the fourth quarter. The call was correct. One official threw a flag because he though LSU had only six players on the line of scrimmage. Game footage shows that LSU's split end -- the seventh player -- was lined up approximately one yard off the line of scrimmage. Yet the official beside the split end did not have his arm out, which officials do when players are not aligned properly. A penalty wasn't warranted.

With that said, the officials did themselves (and the league) a disservice by not making the call before reviewing Hester's touchdown run. Illegal formation calls cannot be overturned. So what happened is that the replay-booth people confirmed that LSU had seven players on the line of scrimmage. Then the officials rescinded the flag. That's great from an enforcement perspective, but an obvious breach of protocol. Penalties need to be handled before the review process begins.

Tuberville said he spoke with OLs Lee Ziemba and Chaz Ramsey about the cut block applied to LSU DT Glenn Dorsey during the second half Saturday. Ramsey went low and Ziemba immediately hit Dorsey high, knocking the All-American into an awkward position that led to a knee injury. Dorsey didn't return. Tuberville concluded that there was no malice. He also said that Auburn doesn't teach illegal cut blocks and won't tolerate illegal cut blocks. Tuberville probably should have ended his rant with the malice stuff.

WR Rob Dunn, who did not travel to Baton Rouge because of a suspension, was at practice Sunday and remains with the team. Tuberville said he hasn't yet decided when Dunn will return to gameday duty. Dunn was suspended for a "practice problem," Tuberville said.

What I really enjoyed about the "Bobby Hebert Experience" -- that's what I'm calling it -- was the questioning of Les Miles and the coaching staff with every breath. And Hebert emphasized each point by slamming his fist down on the table and screaming out curse words that would make a mobster blush.

All I could think of the whole time this guy was going off was George Constanza. "You know what's interesting? The quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons is named Bobby Hebert. No "r," which I find fascinating. It's a fun name to pronounce."

One thing for sure is that I'm proud of Brandon Cox, he played lights out! However, does anyone feel like we got cheated out of that game? Their two touchdown drives in the second half both had controversial plays.

1) How many of you in all your days of watching football have seen a review done before announcing the penalty? I had never seen it and it happened twice. Video replay shows LSU didn't have 7 men on the line, and they picked the flag up. Now, they still could have scored but I'll take a 3rd and goal try from the 14 instead of touchdown LSU for the lead!

2) What was up with that bad spot by the ref in their last drive? Eric Brock made a great play to stop that guy short. It should have been 4th and 1 from the 38. At that point you have a big 4th down play to decide the game. If you guys payed close attention, you noticed that boy's whole body came down short of the first down line. Now, you may say why didn't Tub challenge. Hell, the commentators said he was short and it was a bad spot from the beginning. Why didn't they call for a review from the booth when every play is reviewed in college football?

3) This is stretching it a little bit but Powers got pushed by that WR just before the ball arrived. If you didn't see it just look everytime they show it as a Pontiac Game Changing Performance. Powers had that guy played perfectly, but look how the guy gets space. He shoved our guy while the ball was in the air.

We played well enough to win. I just hate that the game was taken out the hands of the players. Now, I see why it's so hard to win down there if they have refs in their pockets like that! These were three big plays which ultimately led to their six point win!

The problem I have with the phantom illegal procedure penalty is that the officials did the exact opposite thing for LSU earlier in the game. Rod Smith made a catch on the sideline on a play with an AU penalty. They called the penalty and then looked at the replay to see if was a catch. When the same exact thing happened on the LSU TD, they looked at the replay w/o calling the penalty and then changed their mind. That doesn't make any sense to me. PENALTIES ARE NOT REVIEWABLE. Did it change the outcome? Maybe. And that will not be forgotten about this game.

If that was indeed not a penalty (I don't know enough about the rules to say for sure) then they ultimately got it right. But I still find it disturbing that the officials did it one way for LSU and another way for AU.

LSU did have seven on the line. That's the deal. The seventh guy was a little off, I'll agree, but the official standing like three feet away didn't consider that a problem. Tuberville didn't, either.

Reviewing the penalty was not legal. That's obviously what happened. I'll bet the SEC gets this clarified (privately) in time for next week's game.

The bad spot on the third-down play late was not accurate, but didn't seem notably bad. I see a lot of spots -- meaningless spots -- go awry to some degree.

jay, if you don't think that spot was bad you might want to get your eyes checked. the worst spot i have seen in 25yrs of watching college football. this crew(same as ua/um) should be suspended for the rest of the season.the penalty cannot be reviewed and should have stood. you can't make the rules up as you go.

I agree with seleagle. That spot was horrible. It is one thing if it would have been where there were no markings on the field, but he fell right on the arrow and that should have given the official a reference point as to where he was tackled. Instead, the guy moved it up in front of the arrow.

It might not have changed the outcome, but that one spot did change everthing that happened after that play. If LSU had 4th and 1, the clock would not have stopped w/ the 1st down. Although they would have probably gotten the 1st down, anything could have happened (i.e. the last play of the UK-LSU game the week before, when the UK guy was not even blocked) Also, AU's defense would have been crowded on the line instead of more spread out when the 1st down run went for 10 yards. I know if we had played better it shouldn't have come down to one spot, but it did and the officials screwed up big time.

Jay, I'm sorry but I have to humbly disagree with you. We who watch on TV get different viewpoints. When they came back from commercial, they showed the review of the play in question. The commentator circled the guy and showed he was almost two yards off the ball with only six on the line of scrimmage. My question is how can you review and pick the flag up when it was the right call?

Also, I agree with seleagle and autr for the reasons stated. That was no 'meaningless spot.' This was huge! The guy's helment was a good foot short of the down line after his elbow came down almost a yard short. The guy gets up (whole body short of the first down) and places the ball at the marker. The ref runs in and doesn't move the ball from the spot where the RB placed it. Incredible!!!!!

I tape the games that's why I pay so much attention to detail. But anyway thanks for letting me be a part of the Hottest Auburn Blog on the Net!
